Custom MTB Helmet Paint Job // HOW TO - USING SPRAY PAINT !!

  • Want to know how to use spray paint to customize your mountain bike helmet?? Check out this video to see the steps I used to create this sweet custom paint job on my MTB Fox ProFrame helmet. After some mistakes along the way, the biggest thing I learned is to have patience but also to use a stencil specific vinyl if you want to create custom color variations. I ended up ruining the project and had to sand it all back to the finish because my vinyl pulled up all the paint. In the end, I used a white vinyl as stickers and I still love how it turned out.

    Another awesome project vid. Oh and congratulations on 4k subscribers. Soon be 10ik lol. As I said I would drop a message about the meeting. I was there but had to leave after an allergic reaction. But one of the Sorba guys kept me in the loop. The downhill park is still working its way through the couple of issues but in the meantime the NCCC who is also involved in the downhill park is working with another developer to secure the flatter ground bellow where the downhill park will be. They have plans to put in several different things, Frisbee golf etc. But one thing they mentioned was a Mountain Bike Skills park would be added to a section of the land. So fingers crossed on that.

      Gamedestroyers - nice! Thanks for the update! I was actually thinking about our conversation yesterday and wanted to track you down and see what happen. Hopefully the allergic reaction wasn’t too bad!! I’m happy to hear the downhill park is making progress and cool to hear about a potential skills park. They probably didn’t mention any timeline around the project did they?

    Adhesion problems suck - I've been there!! I don't know what type of vinyl you were using for your masking but you can get low tack vinyls that will help. Also any time you're painting plastic you want to make sure you degrease it well as there's often release agents on the surface, and you can use plastic primer / adhesion promoter to help your paint stick. Just in case you have another bash in future!

    • @MTBTrailRider
      @MTBTrailRider  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks! I just used a generic vinyl - definitely not promoter as a low tack vinyl. I sanded the plastic down lightly and used a basic cleaner but it wasn’t a specific degreaser. The paint has held up great since I painted this. It’s been hit and banged a couple times and holding well. But definitely will need to be more aware of the supplies and procedure if I get to do multiple colors where I need to use a vinyl for masking areas

  • @BombatGeneral
    @BombatGeneral 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Some questions - or - considerations. After sanding did you clean the surface? I find iso alcohol removes all grease from fingers and wiping with a cloth removes the residue from sanding. This will help with paint adhesion.
    Another thought, perhaps the initial base layer didn’t have time to dry or cure resulting in it binding to the next layer. Leave in the sun or a warm place for a few hours.
    Lastly, I’ve had better results from spraying the same brand paint when layering.
    I know some vinyls have different adhesives but if the initial coat layer isn’t dry or surface not clean then the paint was always descended to pull away.
    Just re painted my 2007 Enduro frame in a labour of love project. Great fun to personalise something and give it a new lease of life! Final helmet looked great 👍🏼

    • @MTBTrailRider
      @MTBTrailRider  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nice. Yes i did clean with alcohol after sanding. And I definitely rushed the additional layers the first time. Thinking it was cured and it was not. Once I sanded down my mistake I reapplied and let the layers fully dry this time. The paint has remained the same since I painted it. No chips or fading or anything since...

    How has it held up? Can you clean mud off without scratching the paint? Are you being extra careful where you lay it down or are you treating it normally?

    • @MTBTrailRider
      @MTBTrailRider  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      With the clear coat, its much more durable and i am less careful with it then if I just had the paint layer. Just do a lot of very light dustings when you apply the paint layers. The clear coat, I would add an extra coat or two over what I did. I am treating the helmet normally as if it wasnt painted though. I have one chip in the in paint on the forehead of the helmet but that was from an actual crash. It has not chipped more or gotten worse since the crash. No problem wiping off dirt or mud.
      Just take your time masking the helmet and priming the helmet. Making sure the paint heals/cures between coats and especially before applying the clear coat. I would wait a day or two before adding the clear coat.

    ive never done the stencil thing..but it seems that would happen all the time. Spraying paint over the stickers and then trying to peel them off..just seems like its gonna all peel off..BUT i know it works as ive seen it done before.."scratches head" go figure..Still turned out ok..It will scratch up easily though but it will have that "worn out' look which is ok too..Nice project man..

    • @MTBTrailRider
      @MTBTrailRider  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yea, if I let the base color cure longer and used a different sticker that wasn’t so sticky it would have been fine I think. Oh well... also, I did apply many coats of the clear coat which dries harder and will work as a protection to scratches and such. Obviously big hits or crashes will still cut it open. I like how it turned out.

    • @Theo-mb2dd
      @Theo-mb2dd 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MTBTrailRider hi great info, im thinking about doing this to my helmet in this quarantine. I only have one question, how much time did you let the paint rest between applying the different layers? Is it shorter or longer when you have to remove the stencils?

    • @MTBTrailRider
      @MTBTrailRider  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      daniele teodorosi - so if you want to use stencils you’ll need to remove them before the paint fully dries or else the paint could pull up. It won’t be clean lines. Also, my mistake was not using stencil vinyl. My sticker vinyl was super sticky and pulled up paint underneath. So what I ended up doing was creating the color I liked then added stickers to the top.

    • @MTBTrailRider
      @MTBTrailRider  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I waited multiple days to let the color heal and dry fully before applying a different color. When I applied the clear coat I started with very light coats and waited almost 3 days to make sure the paint was dry underneath.

    • @Theo-mb2dd
      @Theo-mb2dd 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MTBTrailRider understood, thanks a lot! ETOE said that not using a polystyrene specific primer will make the paint not to stick well to the plastic and as a result the paintjob will peel off after a few months. Are you having his problem?

  • @ryanschabert2515
    @ryanschabert2515 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Do you know what spray paint is safe to use for the shell? I'm also painting a proframe and i was wondering if just any spray paint will work or if you need a specific kind that won't damaged the shell

    • @MTBTrailRider
      @MTBTrailRider  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I used just basic spray paint from Home Depot. The plastic shell should be fine with any spray paint - however, it’s the foam that you need to be careful with. The aerosol is what eats at the foam and you will ruin your helmet and the integrity of it. That’s why I have the helmet masked. Again, the shell covering the foam is just a type of plastic and will be fine. I would get as high quality spray paint as you can / are willing to spend.

    • @MTBTrailRider
      @MTBTrailRider  3 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @MTBTrailRider
      @MTBTrailRider  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hamzza_K - clear coat spray paint. But if you watched the video, make sure you hold the can far away making your light initial coats. If you use spray paint too close to the helmet, the aerosol could eat the foam.

    • @MTBTrailRider
      @MTBTrailRider  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The clear coat is used to protect the paint. If you bang it up, it scuffs you the clear coat vs the color. Depending on the brand of clear coat, sometimes they dry “harder” - again, to protect the color from scratching/peeling.
