Nice job Anna! I did it on my Nomad and you featured it on the tech show. Carbon is more difficult than aluminum. After the primer you can start painting after 15_30 minutes waiting longer wont make any difference but after the painting is done be sure to wait as long as possible minimum 24 hours before spraying your clear coat that is important. Also between color coats just wait an till is tuch dry that is enough. The best point to correct any mistakes drips etc is before the color is cure. Before you spray the clearcoat wash the frame with warm walter and and a soft soap the one that is used for dish washing is good the wipe the frame with lint free cloth and let it dry completely dry before clearcoating. If it is posible try to protect the frame from the outdoor condition between layers (when you are not spraying the frame), that's is a few tips from my experience i have done this a few times it was not easy but it was rewarding and fun for me.
Go for a sealed filter mask not a dust mask as paints give off highly irritable vapours, you might also add some clear protection tape on the hard wearing areas around the front and rear wheels but ensure to leave it a few days in a warm area to really vapour off and fully dry before applying. Itll be good to see it once you have the bike built back up 👍
You definitely wear the wrong mask for sanding & painting that one doesn't protect you at all. Not a bit. Your bike still came out really cool. Great job 👍
Great content as usual. One thing I have to add is DO NOT SAND BLAST ALUMINUM FRAMES, if you're going to machine ready an aluminum frame you would want to media blast it. Sand blasting will reduce the integrity of the material.
Flash time is important to the painting process. Follow all instructions of the manufacturer. Generally the dry time before 2k clear is 30 mins. Any more than that and the clear May not bond to the base colour. You really want the base to still be soft but not wet. That way they become one layer.
I flip road bikes after I turn them into fixies. they sell well living in a university city. I love doing custom paint jobs. My favorite is the Trans/candy chrome car paints over raw steel frames.
Transparent colors over other colors is a great way to get depth. Currently rocking a transparent red over gold/metallic brown for a two-tone candy apple red. I've used red over red, and that comes out pretty bitch'n too.
I like to see all gmbn and gcn presenters doing a bike frame painting competition and showing their design creativity painting skills after that go to the street to the audiences for judgment their paintings frame design results would be interesting 😂🖌️🎨🚲
very interesting, specially because you left all the little problems and showed them on camera so we can learn from it. definitely seems easier than i though overall. Seems quite fun and the result really isn't bad, I'm assuming if you were to do it again it'd be perfect.
Glad you enjoyed it! There are a few small things that Anna addressed in her conclusion that she would've changed for next time. It's quite a fun project to take on! 👍
nowadays professional mediablasting workshops even can blast your carbonframe without damaging it. they use a special medium for that and it might cost a bit more but spares you from hours of sanding or f*ing it up completly
Regarding the clear....usually the clear coat and the paint are not the same formulation so they dry at different speeds. Always wait for the paint to cure (not just dry) before applying clear. This usually takes about a week or two. Oh, and don't wax it for a month. The paint has to de-gass and wax doesn't allow it.
This is so low quality. GMBN should do better. Sand down all of the paint if you wanna paint ur own bike. The old paint can crack under. Wear a mask when sanding aswell as when you paint. You are inhaling paint during both stages. Sand down the bike between all the stages if you dont want an uneven paintjob.
I'm inspired but F won't be ruining my £2k yeti frame myself... Lol. Good to hear that a company in Bristol was mentioned as I'm in Bristol.. So would go to them 💪💪💪great video
Check out ETOE on youtube for a more in-depth on how to spray your bike with rattlecans. I like the way fade works with the torn tape effect, but the clearcoat should be done better. Maybe a few more coats would be the solution.
I'm a bit annoyed by my frame colors by now (grey greenish mat and bright neon orange) and this is so inspiring, knowing that I can do this myself (the internet said you should never do it yourself because carbon is oh soo fragile and you will need to buy a whole knew bike if you try it yourself, I'm obviously exaggerating a bit but that sums it up pretty well). I'm so inspired, will definitely paint my bike frame someday. Thanks a lot for this !!
I got board in lockdown and was board of the colour of my hardtail dartmoor hornet 2017 with home made decals for the frame so I did what you have done which I have tryed to get it up on tryed three times loving GMBN channels
That's really cool that you've had a go at doing a custom spray job! It's so fun to experiment to see what awesome designs you can create! Thanks for the support! 👍
I've been eying my Scott Scale (2013 model) all through out the video... And I think I really want to do it my self!!! But I think I will get an old or broken frame on eBay to practice on first... I love my Hardtail and I don't want to mess it up!!!!
Poor frame. If you're thinking about respraying a bike, please search for ETOE here in TH-cam and learn the PROPER way to do this job. He has detailed tutorials for either spray cans or compressor + paint gun.
I enjoyed your spraycanyon vid very much. From what i can see it looks great. I probably wont try all the masking fades but wood do a two tone with stickers. Its a ten year old frame but the bike still rides nice and id like it to look good to. Thx for your nice vid. Also I’ll check out Spray Bikes on your tip!
Very nice job! Yes, patience is key here! I let my bike's paint cure for a week inside my shed, before throwing the clear coat on it. All in all, it took me around 2½ weeks to get the bike, rims, & bars painted, but the end result came out amazing.
I'd love to see it as a single speed XC/touring bike. I've seen adapters around to use 6-bolt disc brake hubs as flip-flop track hubs, so if you keep one of those on hand you could switch between single speed and tracklocross!
Nice where do you get the stickers? I did a paint job in 2020 with automotive coatings as my gravel bike on a china carbon…the only thing years later is I wish I had extra touch up paint, nomatter how strong you think the paint will hold up if the bike is ridden chips will happen!
Looks great I wasn't sure about the masking tape but the effect works. I have done a few bike resprays never done a fade recently a Matt black bike for my son that was a nightmare to get right. I think a commute bike show off the finish
Easy peasy when you have sponsors buying you bikes, but respraying a relatively new frame when you just even the surface and not actually strip the old paint off feels bodgy
We got two of these for our daughters th-cam.com/users/postUgkxHL1v1R3NE5x4KiYfyt8dnQmyNYz7qi5L the same size for age 6 and 9. It works very well for both girls. Gears were very easy for them to learn. Changing gears up takes some hand strength and is a bit hard, but they are learning. They did not come with water bottle holders- we actually got confused and thought the Derailler Guard was the bottle holder!! Regardless of these details, the bikes are fantastic- even our six year old who only just learned to ride bikes caught on within an hour of practice and loves it. Lightweight and easy for them to handle. All the parts are in excellent condition and the bikes are easy to assemble and very well packaged. Great choice for kids!
I do all the maintenance on my bikes myself, but repainting is where I draw the line. I’d be way too scared of mucking it up. Yours does look really good though!
Whats that old saying? Pink&Green should never be seen. And then you added Silver. Sorry Anna, thats Horride, but I think you can save it with more Chunky Bold Black Decals.
Thank you for the tips. I wanted to give my hardtail a new look. Thanks to you am just going to give it a go, after I gave it some thought about what colour and style 👍🏻😊
I would not paint outdoors like this. I use plastic drop clothes to create a paint booth in my garage. i also use cheap house fans with paper filters to ventilate the booth. Use the proper respirator and good lighting. now you can control your temperature, humidity and you wont have bugs and dirt in your new paint.

I remember I used to do this back in the day to my DH and BMX's was a new paint job every fortnight never happy with a colour and never stops one's it's resprayed and then it started feeling like a horrible bike like it was stolen or something just had enough of them because we're resprayed from original paint I ended up swapping a Resprayed GT for a cheaper dyno chrome bmx was just sick of it being resprayed! Wouldn't advise it to a new bike even if your a professional the bikes never the same after that! So beware, also deprecates in value alot! I wouldn't buy a second hand bike that's been resprayed just with the experiences I have personally had in my time! I am was a professional body specialist when I was doing mine even at that was never happy!
You may wanna check Martin at ETOE on here Guys a genius, and likes to watch other people spray I do all my own, but it's ALOT of work which is why it's expensive Buy an old frame and play, you want filter mask with P3 inserts

And wear a mask when sanding paint aswell, its some nasty stuff for the lungs too.
3M makes a P95 mask specifically for painting. They come with a one way valve that makes it easier to exhale. WELL DONE

I liked the look pre the silver bit. Well done though

Well done,Anna!
I definitely want to try painting my own bike. This was very good inspiration
Superb Video looks great !

Cure out of sun too otherwise you get UV damage. Paint is a real Karen...

Cool paint! I vote for a conversion to a flat bar gravel/cross type bike. Have fun with it.

Wear gloves so oils from the skin don't transfer to surface

Soft foam sanding blocks make for a nice blended finish.
Also, nitrile gloves to make sure oils from your hands don’t get onto the frame and make dimples.
Fill bigger cavities with newspaper. Makes it easier to apply the tape as there is more to stick to.
That's awesome Anna!
Thanks! 👍
I loved it, amazing custom paint
Thank you, Dan! We're glad you enjoyed!

You did a pretty good job actually.
Looks like it needs a fine grade wet sand and clear coat. Not finished yet.
it looked better without the silver paint on top! but nice work and intresting insights. thanx!!!

Hello. I am an avid follower of yours. i am from germany I have a powder coated mtb. do I have to consider something when painting with cans? Thanks
What colour turquoise is that? I’ve found the brands website but can’t find that exact colour?

That's great that you can do all your bike maintenance yourself! Repainting can seem quite intimidating, though!
I would be tempted to paint my bike but its a cube stereo 160 would it void the warranty if painted
You should make it into a flat bar gravel bike!
would you follow the same/or similar procedure for a non carbon frame?

what about the frame warrenty?
is it still valid?

I could rattle a couple of cans
Please never do this to a bike frame over 50quid
