JUST got done doing this on my 2013 B8.5 S4... like 10 minutes ago lol. Many many thanks for making this video.
The only thing I did differently after reading through the audi forums, was to fill it cold until it started to leak out and put the fill plug back on, finger tight.
Then, instead of turning the car on and filling once it reached temperature, I turned the car on, shifted it into each gear to load the new filters, then shut it off quickly.
Next I filled it again until it was leaking and then took the fill tube out completely and put the fill plug back in, finger tight.
Then I turn the car back on for the final time, wait until it reached temp, and then opened the fill plug and let the excess pour out.
Once it stopped leaking it should be at the right level, so I put the plug back in and torqued it down.

Thanks Paul for your awesome line-up of parts, great prices & taking the time for making this & all your videos..... I would like to offer up some advice when removing the trans pan(also applies to oil pans), always leave 1 bolt loosely screwed in on the opposite side of where you want the residual DSG fluid to drain towards, that way once most of the fluid has drained, you can then hold the pan with 1 hand while you unscrew the last bolt with the other hand or if the pan is stuck to the trans & you need to do a little prying, you can pry the pan loose without it falling to the ground, possibly causing damage to the pan & once the pan is loose, now hold the pan with 1 hand while you unscrew the last bolt with the other hand. Thanks again for everything you do for the community.

The DL501 (0B5) has two separate oil systems and I'm changing both when I have to do the DSG oil change:
    1. ATF oil aystem:
The first oil system accommodates the dual clutch, the mechatronic system and the oil supply (around 7 liters - this is what you changed).
This ATF provides rapid response of the shift and clutch control mechanisms even at low temperatures, and serves to lubricate and cool the dual clutch.
    2. Gear oil system
The second oil system incorporates the manual gearbox, the transfer case (centre differential) and the front axle drive (4.35 liters of a different oil type).
Lubrication is by means of a hypoid gear oil with a special oil additive for the centre differential. By separating these oil chambers, it has been
possible to design the individual component parts of the gearbox optimally. Thus, it was not necessary to make any compromises due to conflicting demands on the lubricant.

To anyone who will be attempting this. The bolts he removed are to be replaced. All of them (trans pan and brace) are mandatory replacement parts. There is a tightening sequence and specific torque to all the bolts he removed. The way he filled it is wrong. Don’t ever run your vehicle without fluid in the transmission. Fill the transmission with fluid before you start the car. When the trans temperature gets to 35 Celsius open the fill plug while it is running. Let fluid run out until you get a steady drip and reinstall the plug. You must do all this before the temp gets to 45 c or the transmission will have less oil then required.

Great how-to, thank you! Did my DSG service over the weekend.
One thing I learned that you didn't mention: If you are using tubing to gravity feed in the new fluid, make sure to keep the tube as far away from the cats as possible. I tucked mine in between the bell housing and the hard lines. It took a while for the trans fluid to get up to temp and so the exhaust was fully up to temp and prone to melt my tubing if I routed any other way.

Great DYI, however when you install the new internal filter do not lube it up with oil. Instead clean it with alcohol this will help you hold the filter in place so that you can install the pan easier, otherwise the filter will droop and prevent you from installing the pan nice and flush. It’s almost impossible to get it installed by yourself.

Thank you your effort to make this video, helping te DIY guys. Reading the comments I decided to share a material found on the web. Sorry for the long text. Consist of three parts: draining, filling and checking-topping up ATF level.
    Other notes:
    A) concerning the fittment of the internal filter. I do not recommend to clean the O ring width alcohol in order to make it tight enough fitment. Professionals using an O ring on the "+" positioner to make tight fitment.
    B) I do not believe the "30-50 degree the right level" explanation. DO a simple test: fill in a glass bottle width scaling on the side width ATF. Measure the level at 30 degree celsius. Note the level. Heat up to 50 degree celsius. Note the level. Compute the difference between the levels. My first guess is that the result is not measureable, ie. less than 1mm. The correct reason behind this explanation could be simple: over 50 degree celsius the ATF is burning the (gloved) hand when the fill plug is fitted.
Good reading and use it on your risk.
    Draining ATF
    1. Engine not running.
    2. Vehicle must be absolutely horizontal (drive it onto a four-pillar lifting platform or over an inspection pit).
    3. Selector lever at position “P”.
    4. Parking brake button must be pulled up to apply the electromechanical parking brake.
    5. Remove rear noise insulation
    6. Place used oil collection and extraction unit below gearbox.

    WARNING
Risk of eye injury, wear safety goggles.

    7. Remove ATF drain plug -arrow- and allow ATF to drain off.
    8. Renew seal for ATF drain plug.
    9. Tighten ATF drain plug - 45nm.
    Note
The exchangeable ATF filter must always be renewed if the ATF is changed

    Filling gearbox with ATF
    Caution
    Risk of damage to gearbox
= Use only the ATF supplied as a replacement part for dual clutch gearbox 0B5.
    = Select correct type
= Other types of ATF or other oils cause malfunctions and/or failure of the gearbox.
= The ATF filling unit must be clean and the ATF must not be mixed with other types of oil!
= The engine must not be started if only a little or no ATF remains in gearbox after repair work or after excessive ATF leakage.

    10. Fill reservoir of ATF filling unit
    11. Secure reservoir for ATF filling unit as high as possible on vehicle.

    12. Remove ATF inspection plug
    13. Insert filler nozzle of ATF filling unit into ATF inspection hole.
    14. Fill with ATF using ATF filling unit until ATF comes out of inspection hole.
    15. Shift selector lever into position “P”.
    16. Start engine and turn off after 20 seconds.
    17. Continue filling with ATF using ATF filling unit until ATF comes out of inspection hole.
    18. Start engine and allow to run at idling speed.
    19. Continue filling with ATF using ATF filling unit until ATF comes out of inspection hole again.
    20. Fit ATF inspection plug = 45nm.
    21. Stop the engine.
    Check ATF level

    Note:
= The ATF level will vary according to the ATF temperature.
= If the ATF level is checked when the ATF temperature is too low, this will result in overfilling.
= If the ATF level is checked when the ATF temperature is too high, this will result in underfilling.
= Both overfilling and underfilling will impair the function of the gearbox.
    Test conditions
= Gearbox must not be in emergency running (backup) mode.
= Vehicle must be absolutely horizontal (drive it onto a four-pillar lifting platform or over an inspection pit).
= Selector lever at position “P”.
= Parking brake button must be pulled up to apply the electromechanical parking brake.
= Extractor hose(s) of an exhaust gas extractor must be connected. Extractor switched on.
= Air conditioner and heating system switched off.
= Vehicle diagnostic tester is connected.
= The ATF temperature should not be higher than 30°C at the beginning of the test (the temperature will rise during the test).
    Checking ATF level
    22. Read off ATF temperature.
    Caution
    Risk of damage to gearbox
= The engine must not be started if only a little or no ATF remains in gearbox after repair work or after excessive ATF leakage.
= In this case the gearbox must be filled with ATF before proceeding further

    23. Start engine with selector lever in position “P”.
    24. With brake pedal still depressed, select all gear positions (“P”, “R”, “N”, “D”, “S”) one after the other at idling speed, maintaining each position for at least 10 seconds.
    25. Shift selector lever into position “N”.
    26. Shift selector lever into position “P”.
    27. Allow engine to continue running at idling speed.

    28. Place used oil collection and extraction unit -VAS 6622A- below gearbox.

    WARNING
Risk of eye injury, wear safety goggles.

    29. When ATF reaches temperature of 30 ℃, unscrew ATF inspection plug.
    30. The ATF level is correct if a small amount of fluid comes out at the ATF inspection plug when the ATF temperature is between 30 and 50 °C.
If this is not the case, top up ATF

    Note
The ATF inspection plug must be screwed in again before the ATF reaches a temperature of 50 °C.
    31. Tighten ATF inspection plug

My understanding of this procedure is not to turn the car off after the proper fluid level have been reached. The proper fluid level is maintained at temperature while the vehicle is running. Once you turn the vehicle off the fluid is draining back to the pan.

Hi! I might have missed it, but I don’t think you mentioned when or how to check the level of the fluid once you have completed the change.
What I mean by that is that it’s unclear from the video whether or not to leave the gearbox in Neutral, Park or Drive and if the check (the slow continuous dripping of fluid) should be preformed with the engine off or not.
Some gearboxes need to be checked in the specific temperature interval, with the engine on and the gearbox in Parking. I was unsure if that applies to this model too.
Thanks again for the informative video!

It is strange that it is first time I heard about Audi uses DSG on Audi Sport Series product like this B8.5 S4, Chinese ver B8.5 S4 won't offer optional gearbox which is only AT gearbox because of that DSG China scandal. VW deal with different solutioin of Chinese people in different ways, Taiwan offers recall while Continent only offer lengthen quality guaranteeing. B9 and B9.5 S4 has AT gearbox for Chinese customers, no DSG. DSG (DCT) used to screw up the Chinese automobile market in 2012, especially the VW model of have DQ200 7 speed and DQ250 6 speed . The DSG malfunction model include Magotan, Golf, CC, Skoda, Satigar and Scirocco. Mostly, these phenomenon of DSG are low gear palsing noise, lost speed for no reason, and clutch pack overheat. Can you tell me the model code of this DSG used on B8.5 S4?

Imagine Audi putting a fill hose for the tranny on in the engine bay. My gosh, it makes my head hurt that this isn't standard on any/all vehicles.
Interestingly, I have two Audis, a '12 S4, that's stage 2+ APR, it's a garage princess. The other is a '13 Q5. When I was having panoramic sun shade repaired/replaced they asked if I wanted them to service the trans. I said, why not, it had 60K miles on it, it was probably time. A month or so later, started having trans problems, even shifting into drive but it being in reverse really. Took it to my guy that is about an hour away, who is the only one I'll let touch my S4. He tore it down, tested the trans fluid and measured what came out. Said the trans was nearly 3 quarts low in fluid, with no leaks. I phoned the other shop and explained that they likely screwed me because the trans was blown. They said, "we'll need the car back to so we can see it for ourselves". 3.5K later in a new trans tells me they never did what was done in this video; i.e. they never went through the proper procedures to assure the trans was full of fluid.
    Live and learn.

Quick question, does it not need to be cycled while you are filling it? 🤔🤔
It seems you only cycled it AFTER tightening the plug from being filled at recommended oil temp....

Great video thanks, lifesaver after Audi never did it at the correct mileage yet still marked the car as having a full service history.
I only did the outer filter on this occasion because I have had to do so many other service items (again thanks to Audi not doing it) and I could only get around 5.5 litres in. Would this seem correct taking into account I didn't drop the pan or do the internal filter?
    Thanks again, love your videos!

  • @luciferghost

8:38 it feels like the internal filter is barely holding on...shouldn't it clip on nicely and be firm? Also you didnt mention how much to fill up prior to turning the car back on and waiting for 40 degree temperature before putting in the rest

@@Deutscheautoparts Car has 52k miles, DSG service hasn't been completed yet. Should I change both filters, or just the canister filter. Should I pay the extra for the OEM fluid or is the LiquiMoly just as good?
The fluid question just plain was not answered, and the filter question was answered like a politician, with no real answer. "Replace the recommended filters" was the answer given.

I like doing my own because that way you know for certain it was changed. too many errors have happened with shops not familiar with VAG. Why no shifting through gears ? the $80 for a presssurized fill system makes it so much faster - not less messy, just faster. got mine on amazon and it does 3 quarts at a time. obviously one issue is cleaning pressurized unit out to do multiple fluids or having one per fluid - like we have audi tiptronic and a VW TDI DSG and those are different fluids - both of those fill through the bottom. Ive used a $49 IR handheld scan tool and I check trans body and fluid leaving - here in florida its easy tranny to get 40c

Delighted I watched this. Also delighted you showed any / all fuck ups. It makes the viewer wiser before starting. Is the half fill, warm up, top off fill due to the fluid not being taken in till it's running? Also, I don't have obdeleven but I do have vcds. Just a bit more clumpy with the laptop. Also, see when the door is open and you start and get those annoying beeps? On the wiper stick, on the outside of the stock there should be a top/bottom button. Hit the top button. It stops the beeping 😘

I had a question that I think you might be able to answer. I was wondering, on the 2015 VW Passat, how does the fuel door actuator work because mine doesn’t lock the door. I can hear it work, but it doesn’t lock because the part doesn’t turn. Is it something the actuator is supposed to do? Or is it some kind of plastic on the door that’s supposed to turn it as it closes it? Thanks in advanced.

so how many quarts? was actually used? actually, then the required
    ZF8 requires 8-9 quarts.
using the 40-50c time frame, and running through gears, and went back and toped off..
all done and said. all comes down to. What you took out, must go back in, quantity wise.
I used only 5quarts of OEM fluid. When all said and done
    B9 S5
we are essentially buy extra quarts for the next maint. cycle

So i’m confused. why do you use 6.8 liters. looks like you have about 2 or more liters in the pan on the ground. when i did mine it only took 4.5 liters and it spilled out the fill plug super fast. ran it and tried to add more but it was still spilling out the drain plug. i didn’t change the internal filter but i couldn’t imagine that internal filter having 2 liters of fluid in it.
