I remember when I worked at a VW dealer as a service porter and one of the techs took me under his wing and supervised me when I did my DSG service. It’s moments like this because it seemed daunting to me as someone who had little no experience with a job like this. Your teaching and methods heavily remind me of that moment lol. Good job Charles!

    Hello Charles
How important is it to keep your car perfectly level when changing the DSG fluid?
I ask this because I checked the oil level in my DQ381 DSG. I watched the ramp lifting my car and I noticed the car dipped a bit at the front, as it’s heavier than the rear of the car I suppose?
Should I set the lifting pads higher at the front to what they are at the rear to counteract the nose heaviness?
    Thank you for your advice.

The only likeness between this DSG and the one in my 2017 Audi A4 is the fact they both have 7 speeds. On the A4 the filters are built into the mechatronics unit and are not serviceable. There is a specific drain plug just like the one towards the front but the one at the rear the standpipe that sets the level is built in and can’t be removed. Also the mechatronic DSG fluid only takes 4 liters as the gear section of the transmission is separate from the mechatronic and takes a different fluid. Oh and the DSG side has a pressure accumulator that has to be depressurized to get the max fluid out.

  • @GoWailord

Did the DSG service on my '19 Rabbit at 40k miles and the fluid looked about like yours did. I work at my family's independent shop and I had to tell my local VW dealership's parts department what fluid and filter go in the DQ381, he didn't even realize the DQ250 was dropped that model year 😅
Also, what is your opinion on the 80k interval? Think it's still safer to follow the 40k interval of the previous DSGs or do you genuinely think these wear less to warrant an 80k change due to the longer gearing?

Hey! Excellent video. I want to ask to you something weird about DSG transmission. I have a VW CC TDI, DSG 6. And it took long (25min in winter) to get the right service temperature, so i changed the thermostat... it improved the time it takes to heat up into the service temperature but still it takes too long(17 minutes), and when going down a mountain/cliff for a couple of minutes the temperature needle goes down easily. So, it is not only the typical thermostat and by checking and sacanning it seems everything to be OK.
Reading in forums i found out that there is a "DSG thermostat" failure that causes this to happen, retarding the normal temperature. Do you know where is that "DSG Thermostat" installed?

Nice video Charles. It's worth noting that the DQ380 and DQ381 use a different type of DSG oil and that the standard oil isn't suitable as the 38x boxes are new "high efficiency" gearboxes. The standard DSG oil is G052182A2, and the DQ38x is G055529A2 which you're using :)

It is pretty tricky, actually a large portion(around 30%) of all DQ381 use the old G 052 182 A2 fluid instead of the new one, but you would most probably not see any of them in your entire career. These special DQ381 have a different codename as 0DW.
      The G 052 182 A2 is actually fuchs FFL-2, and the G 055 529 A2 is fuchs FFL-52529

If your only option is to do this on you back. The filter can be accessed from above to avoid getting a shower of DCT fluid. The battery box needs to come out to gain access to the filter housing. I also removed the 2, 13MM bolts from the gear selector cable so it could be moved out of the way. Then a 24MM wrench can get in to loosen the filter housing.

    Hello
I changed the oil in the transfer box (bevel box) in the VW instructions for doing this oil change it says to change the oil then put the fill plug back in and run the engine in gear with the wheels off the ground for 2 minutes can you tell me what the reason for doing this is? I couldn’t do this, I was able to rotate the wheels by hand a few times but that is all, and then I rechecked the oil level will this have been ok or do I need to check the oil level again after driving the car for some time now?
    Thank you.

I'm honestly really curious to know if the 6 speed or 7 speed dsg is better

I think 7sp is way better

@HumbleMechanic Can you elaborate why? I'm going to probably get a Mk7 GTI. As much as if love a Golf R, I can't spend the extra $10k. And I've driven a manual since I was 18. So I'm not really well versed in anything else. But, the wife doesn't want to drive a manual 😂

Charles, if you ever get your hands on a Golf mk6 2.5l 5-cyl manual, please do a fluid change if possible. There isn't a single vid (to my knowledge) anywhere that shows how to do it *properly*. And there are no Haynes repair manuals for the 6-gen Golfs.
Just hit 252,000 miles on mine (year 2012) and I need to change the manual tran fluid. It's super straightforward on my 2003 Civic, but man is it weird on my Golf.
    Thank you🖐

I wonder how long the DSG will last with consistent oil changes.

I have a 2020 audi a3, would the filter housing be the same as this one on you mk7.5?

Is my audi a3 with 7 speed has to be done at 80 then? not 40k?

If I was the engineering manager responsible for this transmission, I would have told the design team that they should consider that I intended to make them demonstrate changing the fluid and filter with the transmission at full operating temperature, while laying buck naked under the car. Perhaps then they would think about the location and orientation of the filter to ensure it's not a messy job like this.

Great guide. Is there a guide on doing the mechatronics/gearbox adaption reset for the 7.5 models? I believe it isnt the same as the normal 7.

@@HumbleMechanic thanks … you mean the bottom oil cap or the one on the filter ? And, can it be caused by changing the front wheels brake pads ? I feel like it has something to do with the brakes as it’s rough only when let the brake pedal and the 1st gear engages…

I put a plastic bag (without holes) around the filter first, catches 99% of that oil.

Why is there a heat shield on the filter housing? To help keep the plastic housing from deteriorating? I noted the newer cars have a gold colored shield. Do you think a metal filter housing would need a heat shield?
