@@lourdf0xcomment above is not entirely true. Shell damage takes a penalty at yellow and red sharpness. So definitely stop the situational infinite combo for normal gl once you hit yellow sharpness.

Naturally the fatalis GL is the best for full burst/normal shelling, the vaal hazak GL is the best long shell (sans safi) and raging brachydios is best wide shell. Wide shelling is best for either nothing but shelling, or a constant barrage of poke shell poke combos
If you're fighting something with a glaring dragon weakness, like the raths for instance, the Alatreon GL is an absolute beast for wide shelling too. The sheer amount of element on Alatreon weapons is just mind boggling
@@RIP_ZYZZ1738 You just have to do the math, and you understand fully, on a damage basis, every single type of shelling outside of charged shelling, long shelling does more damage, every single form, just loses out versus the wyvern fire, but even then, your shelling makes up for the fact that it does like 100 less damage by doing that almost 100 more damage on just shooting normally.

Thing to note for wide, it naturally has better charge shelling flinch damage than long... and theoretically lower damage, but as we have level 7 wide and we do not have level 7 long, wide ends up doing best damage on charge shelling as well. What long has over wide is longer hitbox.

you forgot one move and its the lunge into shelling move idk what its call but from a lunging thrust if you press shell before it finishes it will do a shell instead of thrusting, great for closing the distance while avoiding bouncing on armored parts but rarely used elsewhere because the normal lunge combos better
Back before Iceborne, one of the most fun and simplest ways to play was with Poke Shell. The animations for the attack pattern were quick, both parts naturally canceled out their end lag, kept you in place, and allowed you to react. I stuck with Wide Shell because of this and wrecked face.

Funnily enough, in Monster Hunter Frontier there was a Tonfa weapon, it had a unique gauge that worked somewhat like the Long Sword's and it was even better than the Glaive for aerial combat since the air dodges expended a small amount of the gauge but it was possible to gain more than what you used, also it had no limit on how many air dodges it could do so long as you had something in the gauge, it'd be fun if they ever came back but with a Shelling system like GunLance as the resource

It's fun when it happens but gunlance isn't a very popular weapon so this won't happen often.
it's unfortunately an annoying input where all buttons have to be pressed at the same time, if one is pressed too late it doesn't work. ive played the weapon for hundreds of hours and still mess it up on my ps5 controller once in a while usually if my hands get tired or something is when it starts happening, you'll eventually find a way to do it with your hand that works for you, i probably should have figured out a better hand position that makes it more consistent 😂
