I am buying a 2020 outback which on their website in a Q&A said should be plug and play but then i saw the cost of the battery requirement and nixed the idea. I don't care if it is efficient at 25 volts, i care about the weight for 2 agm batteries or the cost of a 25volt 100 amp hour lipo battery. It's like trying to sell me European 220volt electronics on a house wired for 110, crazy.
@@richardp.228 english comprehension my friend, the unit is $800 bucks but the weight of 2 agm battery or cost of a 25volt lipo vs 12,5 volt lipo is drastically different. there is not much applications for a 25 volt battery.
@@tamalpias 24 or 36v for marine applications is normal. Just pair a 30 or 60AH lithium on and it should give you a 6-13 miles range(est). This is cheap!!!

Happy to see you guys dappling with the electrified kayaks. Your TH-cam presence bring info to the masses and get them thinking of the possibilities. And there’s a wealth of knowledge on the internet too. I often see Newport mirroring the offering from Haswing, who has brushless motors. I wish they would marry their gps trolling motor with their brushless motor, then we can finally have something that is up to date. I bet Haswing is the OEM and Newport likely combining a kayak mount with a brushless motor and bringing it to the market. If you use lithium, do use the LIFEPO4 chemistry. That’s safest and still have all the advantages in lightweight, power density and longevity. It usually has 3000+ lifecycle versus about 500 or less for the heavy lead acid battery. Also, the capacity of lead acid is usually less because if you draw the voltage down and use 50% of the power, you shorten its life. You should showcase a 50-60 mah 24v lifepo4 should give the same runtime as the two 100mah 12v lead acid but at much lessor weight and size. There’s so much content you can make on all this topic during the fishing season downtime.

I've considered this because pedal drives cost about $1500. The reason I won't is because I can't mount enough solar on my kayak to power the motor. I tend to spend long days on the water and carrying more than one battery on a kayak is just not an option.
Thanks for the video. You made some really misleading comments. This unit still needs a 24 volt battery to work correct? When compared apples to apples this unit with a lifepo4 24 volt battery will be in the 1800 range which is roughly $300 more than a Bixpy with the same adapter plate. Not to mention a lot heavier with a 24 volt lifepo4 battery (or 2-12 volts). I'm glad to see more competition in the market. I don't like misleading videos/comments. Keep it real sir.
thx for the feedback. i mentioned you could have a motor setup with 2 35ah 12v deep cycle lead acid batteries plus the NK-180S for half the cost of a competing model, that happen to require proprietary lipo packs. of course if you want a 1:1 comparison, you'd be spending similar money to add a true 24v lipo or LiFePO4 to the NK. no intent to mislead at all, rather illustrate how this system isn't a closed system and let's you have considerable power with basic power options to start👍🏼

There are 746 watts in one Horse Power. The 417 Watts you were drawing at 5 mph is a bit over 1/2 HP. Did you ever notice the wattage draw on full throttle from a dead stop? I would venture to guess it doesn't peak over 746 watts or 1 HP.
Facts, however with electric motors, current draw is directly related to load. I'd imagine if it were on a very heavy kayak it would draw more. Lastly I'm pretty sure they call it a 1.8hp equivalent, not actually 1.8hp

Rounded off, 1 hp = 746 watts. They are both units of power, different system. If you motor is producing 1 horsepower, then it is producing 746 watts of power by definition - same measurement, different units. Plus accounting for efficiency, if this is a brushless motor then you may be running in the 85% or so range, so you would be drawing about 875 watts or so from the battery or 36.5A of current per horsepower, or about 66A at 1.8hp. Wait a minute. Is your display reading amps not watts? The indicator says "W" though.

Put the Newprt 160 on my Titan 10.5 last week, and even with all the gear, me, and the 60 amp 24 volt battery, was going over 4.7 miles per hour (my Titan and gear weighs about 175 to 180 pounds, and I weigh right around 200 pounds. The 20 amp battery and 9" Garmin weigh another 25 pounds). The 'Yak is only rated for 500 pounds, so I guess I'm alright. Couldn't be Happier with any other 'Yak motor! (Can't wait 'til my Titan X 12.5 gets here, along with the Newport 300 Drive!...!). Lol

I will likely go this route. I currently have a 24 lb thrust Water Snake with a PWM speed controller box on my 2020 Outback in the drive well. I am 6'-2" 240 lbs and it works fine in lakes, with up to 3.5 mph. If the NK180S gets me another mph, I'll be happy with it. Basically, I want to keep my 180 Mirage Drive in place with the motor at the back.
Just to clarify, LiFePo4, lithium iron phosphate, is not the same as LiPo, which is lithium-polymer. Two different lithium chemistries, voltages, and different charging profiles.
Different voltage too: 4,2V or 4,35V (HV) per cell for LiPo, 3,2V for LiFePo4... As already mentioned, more importantly LiFePo4 is chemically stable, LiPo will burn (rather explode) easily...
Recently got the NK 180 (There is no "S" model anymore) The speed control seems to be analog not digital, meaning it goes in steps, not in variable increments of 1%. Mines is flat out at 60% on the controller, rpm does not increase moving beyond this level. Also, it does not start as soon as you move the throttle from zero, it moves almost 20% before the motor even engages and it is very hard to set it for an exact % of your choice. Still better than a ridiculously overpriced Torqeedo, but I am thinking I would have saved a lot of money going with a 24v trolling motor and moding it to mount in the rear myself. Hopefully this motor has enough for me to fish upriver in my local rivers, but I see Newport just launched a new 3hp kayak motor that will kick ass, but unfortunately, its 36v which is not ideal. We will see what 2023 brings.
I wonder why they would not make it more controllable.. btw if you ever need lithium batteries for 12/24/36v I build them at half the price of a Dakota lithium. My main work is building electric mx bike conversions. Batteries are my deal!
Liked. Bixpy is not twice the cost as it includes a Lithium battery in the package. Take the battery out and the motor is actually lower cost - albeit not as powerful. It is also lighter.

Technically you can pull that motor all the way to the shaft, not by the string but with your hand, tie it to something to hold it during transport so it doesn't stick out.
true. if i drive far, i just unmount the motor and secure it under the yak seat. the motor mount just locks in place with a bike wheel skewer, very easy to take off.
@@ishwithfish Unlocking the entire motor with the black plastic mount portion yes, but if you take your hand, and move the motor shaft itself forward until the motor hits the black mounting piece then it'll be tucked in without removing the entire unit. Hard to describe but I'm able to do that on my outback, and clip it to one of the tie down loops.

Nice, would be better if they had various options for the depth. I would want mine about 3" below the surface. That would depend on the load in the kayak too. I would be good with 3" unloaded, and whatever that is full load, maybe 4". Just not 1.5'.
If you put a motor on a kayak, you will have to register it and pay a fee. In California a new kayak at $879 will cost you about $80. Then you will need to paint the number they give you on the kayak.
How do you mount your radio, is it some radio harness in addition to the fishing vest? Could you please share a link to the radio mount harness? Thanks.
I run a 30 pound thrust Minn Kota Enduro with a 20Ah Duracell dry cell. Installed a $20 in line PWM speed controller and I get about 4 hours of battery life. $80 for the Minnkota sure beats $1,000 for the NK-180S. Way too expensive. Be well, fish on.
There is a guy Kevin Dismuke on Facebook who has been making mounts . Like these for trolling motors and whatever else these look just like his mounts. Cool idea
Not even close to his mounts. This is a Torqeedo replica. Almost an exact copy with different colors. About the only difference is this motor is direct drive and Torqeedo is geared with proprietary battery.
@@johnparker8259 hi, in case anyone's wondering, this isn't a torqueedo. there are no interchangeable parts between the NK-180S and Torq 403, they run at different voltages, use a different motor design, different controller design (wired vs wireless), non-proprietary batteries (you can run whatever aftermarket/compatible battery best fits your needs), different everything. kind of like trying to compare a civic to a corolla, might seem similar but different products e2e.
correct. if it's locked it won't move, same as traditional trolling motors or outboards. its to keep it from popping up when you hit reverse hard, which it does!

I would totally buy it but then I have to register my kayak with the DMV...and I think they now make you purchase insurance if you motorize your vessel...
Registered my Outback last October and no insurance required. You will need to have a sales receipt (don't want the DMV to charge you sales tax again!) or a bill of sale. I called my dealer and they sent me a copy - I only had the faded cash register receipt. Also, you will need a manufactures statement of origin, which Hobie supplied me. Lastly, you will need to fill out the DMV Boat Form 101, which you can download and complete online and print out. Now, here is the tricky part if your DMV office has not dealt with a kayak registration: There is a section on the form that you check regarding how the vessel is powered, which includes an alternative fuel box. Leave it blank. My DMV tried to charge $298 (wtf!!!!), but I politely said HELL NO, that the fees should be less than $60. They said they would contact Sacramento the next morning and get back to me. Next morning they called and said come in that the fee was only 50ish dollars. I think I paid $47 which included the two year $20 fee. So, my boat is good to go until 12/31/21. My Certificate of Registration arrived in a week. If your local DMV is confused, ask them to call Sacramento. Hope this helps. PS - Go to Newport Vessels website as they have a section that basically tells you what the fees should be.
Where'd you find a deck for a canoe? How big is it? Was it a custom order, or something someone made? I'm currently doing the same, but am experimenting with cardboard and or foam. Something that's removable so I can still enjoy whitewater fun when I wish.

you'd need a 24v battery, or be willing to run 2 12v in parallel. Newport Vessels is coming out with their own 25.9v lifepo4 battery in the summer, should be a perfect match👍🏼
I run a 45 lb. thrust minkota. With a 12 volt car battery and roll up solar panel for under $400 on my jon boat. That’s for brand new. If I do a little Craig’s list surfing, I can get the cost down to $150 dollars used motor and car battery out of my pickup. Instead of turning battery in for core charge refund. I just replace the battery in my truck long before it goes bad. I get 2-3 years out of a used battery. And forget about a charge controller. Everything is just a manual toggle switch to run and an electricians tool to check the charge rate and capacity. A tool I already own for fixing my house and car electronics.

Cool motor Ish, but the biggest question I have is did you just added a Jackson kayak to your fleet 😳😅. If so, you are going to need a bigger storage space or get rid of the herrings in your freezer 😂

sure can! according to their website "Steering cables can be setup to turn the motor like a rudder using your kayaks OEM mounted foot braces, or a pin can lock the motor in a forward drive position for use on SUPs and inflatable kayaks."
At 400 watt , you are drawing 32 Ampere You gonna need a 8 gauge wire It is not efficient to run like that If you want 12V system just get a regular minnkota 12V trolling motor At 24Volt , 400 watt . This thing is drawing 16A about the highest you want the wire to run I’ll venture to say a 36V system would be more efficient

Already have a lifepo4 (nominal) 12v battery? Buy another and run in series (if your batteries support it; most do).

Bummer it's not 39 volts, plenty of available e bike and scooter batteries available in the used market.

Critically, lipo burns when wet... lifepo4 doesn't.
Different voltage too: 4,2V or 4,35V (HV) per cell for LiPo, 3,2V for LiFePo4...
As already mentioned, more importantly LiFePo4 is chemically stable, LiPo will burn (rather explode) easily...

Recently got the NK 180 (There is no "S" model anymore)
The speed control seems to be analog not digital, meaning it goes in steps, not in variable increments of 1%.
Mines is flat out at 60% on the controller, rpm does not increase moving beyond this level.
Also, it does not start as soon as you move the throttle from zero, it moves almost 20% before the motor even engages and it is very hard to set it for an exact % of your choice.
Still better than a ridiculously overpriced Torqeedo, but I am thinking I would have saved a lot of money going with a 24v trolling motor and moding it to mount in the rear myself.
Hopefully this motor has enough for me to fish upriver in my local rivers, but I see Newport just launched a new 3hp kayak motor that will kick ass, but unfortunately, its 36v which is not ideal.
We will see what 2023 brings.
I wonder why they would not make it more controllable.. btw if you ever need lithium batteries for 12/24/36v I build them at half the price of a Dakota lithium. My main work is building electric mx bike conversions. Batteries are my deal!

Liked. Bixpy is not twice the cost as it includes a Lithium battery in the package. Take the battery out and the motor is actually lower cost - albeit not as powerful. It is also lighter.

Technically you can pull that motor all the way to the shaft, not by the string but with your hand, tie it to something to hold it during transport so it doesn't stick out.
true. if i drive far, i just unmount the motor and secure it under the yak seat. the motor mount just locks in place with a bike wheel skewer, very easy to take off.
@@ishwithfish Unlocking the entire motor with the black plastic mount portion yes, but if you take your hand, and move the motor shaft itself forward until the motor hits the black mounting piece then it'll be tucked in without removing the entire unit. Hard to describe but I'm able to do that on my outback, and clip it to one of the tie down loops.

Nice, would be better if they had various options for the depth. I would want mine about 3" below the surface. That would depend on the load in the kayak too. I would be good with 3" unloaded, and whatever that is full load, maybe 4". Just not 1.5'.
you can adjust depth, there's a collar you tighten to set shaft height👍🏼

If you put a motor on a kayak, you will have to register it and pay a fee. In California a new kayak at $879 will cost you about $80. Then you will need to paint the number they give you on the kayak.

What’s the overall weight
I run a 30 pound thrust Minn Kota Enduro with a 20Ah Duracell dry cell. Installed a $20 in line PWM speed controller and I get about 4 hours of battery life. $80 for the Minnkota sure beats $1,000 for the NK-180S. Way too expensive. Be well, fish on.
Does it allowed steering to a fix position if I choose to use my rudder to steer instead?
yes, there's a collar tab that fixes the motor in a locked position if you want to steer with a rudder/paddle.
I'm guessing in reverse the turning radius is much tighter?
There is a guy Kevin Dismuke on Facebook who has been making mounts . Like these for trolling motors and whatever else these look just like his mounts. Cool idea

Not even close to his mounts. This is a Torqeedo replica. Almost an exact copy with different colors. About the only difference is this motor is direct drive and Torqeedo is geared with proprietary battery.
@@johnparker8259 hi, in case anyone's wondering, this isn't a torqueedo. there are no interchangeable parts between the NK-180S and Torq 403, they run at different voltages, use a different motor design, different controller design (wired vs wireless), non-proprietary batteries (you can run whatever aftermarket/compatible battery best fits your needs), different everything. kind of like trying to compare a civic to a corolla, might seem similar but different products e2e.
If you keep the reverse lock engaged the motor won't kick up if you strike an object?
correct. if it's locked it won't move, same as traditional trolling motors or outboards. its to keep it from popping up when you hit reverse hard, which it does!

Registered my Outback last October and no insurance required. You will need to have a sales receipt (don't want the DMV to charge you sales tax again!) or a bill of sale. I called my dealer and they sent me a copy - I only had the faded cash register receipt. Also, you will need a manufactures statement of origin, which Hobie supplied me. Lastly, you will need to fill out the DMV Boat Form 101, which you can download and complete online and print out. Now, here is the tricky part if your DMV office has not dealt with a kayak registration: There is a section on the form that you check regarding how the vessel is powered, which includes an alternative fuel box. Leave it blank. My DMV tried to charge $298 (wtf!!!!), but I politely said HELL NO, that the fees should be less than $60. They said they would contact Sacramento the next morning and get back to me. Next morning they called and said come in that the fee was only 50ish dollars. I think I paid $47 which included the two year $20 fee. So, my boat is good to go until 12/31/21. My Certificate of Registration arrived in a week. If your local DMV is confused, ask them to call Sacramento. Hope this helps. PS - Go to Newport Vessels website as they have a section that basically tells you what the fees should be.

you'd need a 24v battery, or be willing to run 2 12v in parallel. Newport Vessels is coming out with their own 25.9v lifepo4 battery in the summer, should be a perfect match👍🏼
I run a 45 lb. thrust minkota. With a 12 volt car battery and roll up solar panel for under $400 on my jon boat. That’s for brand new. If I do a little Craig’s list surfing, I can get the cost down to $150 dollars used motor and car battery out of my pickup. Instead of turning battery in for core charge refund. I just replace the battery in my truck long before it goes bad. I get 2-3 years out of a used battery. And forget about a charge controller. Everything is just a manual toggle switch to run and an electricians tool to check the charge rate and capacity. A tool I already own for fixing my house and car electronics.

sure can! according to their website "Steering cables can be setup to turn the motor like a rudder using your kayaks OEM mounted foot braces, or a pin can lock the motor in a forward drive position for use on SUPs and inflatable kayaks."
