I'd call that *the* most humiliating poster ever and it wasn't even in the NBA. I mean the man got cleared like a hurdle, bodied, and to add insult to injury, it was so powerful, it *broke the hoop*
Imagine if this happened in the NBA in front of million viewers worldwide. This would be one of the most legendary moments in Basketball History.
When Shaq pulled down the backboard in New Jersey as a rookie with Orlando, Bill Raftery announced that game too so he saw one backboard get shattered and another one pulled to the floor through sheer strength.

Hoya fan, but that Pitt team was a HELLUVA squad that year. Loved Sean Millers game in college. And Lane and my man that played for the knicks was a great frontcourt

Has to be one of the most raw breaks ever and a perfect 10 on the soundtrack too.
In terms of backboard breaking dunks it is in the all-time Top 10. Add in the call at the end and it is now moved up to the Top 3 of all-time.

I was watching that game when it happened
I know Jerome Lane is very strong and was going at a good clip, but it doesn't seem like this dunk was any more powerful than a lot of other dunks that I have seen that did not result in a shattered backboard.
It probably wasn't. Laminated safety glass gets it's strength from being formed a certain way. Hit it a certain way, and that tension is released - which is why it exploded.
The other part you have to remember - every backboard that is broken causes manufacturing methods to change. Honestly, Shaq should have destroyed a backboard every time he dunks. But modern boards are engineered to take a beating.
That rim from the side is likely it’s weak point.

Jumped from the baseline…cocked it back parallel to his head…had the legs back….throws it down with ONE hand…yells out “UNNNNNG!!”….has crotch on defenders face……backboard explodes with resounding shatter….defender goes flying down…..and for the cherry on the sundae……gets the AND-1!!!! The filthiest dunk in history IMO.
They were just talking about this against Wake Forest. It looks like something that Shaquille O’Neal did.

I was born in Seattle in 1973, where I grew up. Sonics and Blazers fan. I did NOT know that Jerome Lane could dunk!
Jerome Lane was the precursor to LeBron James at Akron St. Vincent St. Mary High School. He was big, powerful and could play all five positions. He also led the NCAA in rebounding twice. Unfortunately, he lost his shooting touch when he entered the NBA, and was just a journeyman player. He is also one of the few people who can name LeBron James' biological father, whom Lane play street ball with.
My dad's friend was a Pitt student at the time. While he didn't go to the game, he was able to obtain a piece of the broken glass which he still owns today.
That is one of best poster dunks of all time it is up there with Vince Carter Olympic dunk.
My dad went to high school with this guy and always told me about this dunk as a kid. Didn’t believe it until he showed this video lmao
I remember watching that game in the Philadelphia area, the sight of the broken backboard a foot off the ground looking all pathetic with the shattered glass all over the floor is what triggered the memory.. ‘88, wow, pushing a quarter century.. unreal.

Loved that era of Pitt hoops. Born & raised Pittsburgh but was a lifelong Syracuse fan but still showed some love for my city college basketball. Thanks y'all and Lane for that record event. That Big East in that era was of dominance, simply put.
