    It's good to see NBA players like Kenny Smith and Shaq show there love and respect for Darryl Dawkins (The Dunkologist) this kid was well before his time. No one was ready for him so they wrote him out of the NBA history. Keep in mind this kid was only like 19 or 20 doing what he did best, talkin trash and Ballen. I would like to see Daryl represented in a more positive light although he's no longer with us I think the NBA family owes it to him and his family to keep this brothers memory alive 💪💯.

    Dr. J once said "Darryl doesn't dare to be great". Erving, like many, felt Dawkins could/should have been a better player. However, Dawkins goal was to destroy backboards. Mission accomplished. At least from Darryl's side.

  • @DaddySinister
    @DaddySinister 9 ปีที่แล้ว +32

    Difference between Darryl's dunks and Shaq's dunks is that Darryl didn't have to hang on the rim to do what he did. Of course if you weigh 300 hundred lbs you can pull the whole support system down by hanging on it.

    • @gunneddown
      @gunneddown 5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Correct, he shatters backboards mid air using tremendous force hammering the rim. Shaq hangs on it pulling everything by his weight.

    • @fashizzle78

      Breakaway rims when Shaq came into the league. However there is a clip of him playing on an old-style rim like the ones Dawkins broke when he was joking around with Ahmad Rashad, he was barely trying and just destroy that rim and ended up flat on his back. The break-away rims that Shaq broke were made with improvements so Dawkins could not break them and he brought the whole bastard down. Shaq was raw power, even more so the Dawkins.

    RIP Darryl - You left us way too soon! You were the first backboard breaking, slam dunking, straight out of high school signing pro! You'll always be remembered here in Orlando at your Alma Mater, Evans High School. You took us to the State Championship in our Senior Year ('75) and you were the nicest guy around. Your popularity never went to your head and I enjoyed every time I interviewed you for the Trojan Tribune - you were the real deal!! You will be missed more than you know.

    1977 Indianapolis, Indiana. Market Square Arena was the first time I ever saw the Philadelphia 76ers in person, it seemed like an All Star Team. I was 12 years old and made my way down to the baseline of the court at halftime where Philadelphia was warming up...a ball rolled over to me.... Darryl walked over, palmed the ball out of both my hands and said "How ya Doin Lil Man?" ....I was a 76ers fan because of The Doctor, but Darryl put the biggest smile on this kids face at that game. RIP Mr.Dawkins, I'll never forget that great moment.

    NBA players have definitely changed. Notice that when commissioner calls Dawkins up and tells him he wants to see him, Daryl reacts the way a little kid would react when he's been called to the principal's office: "Oh, NO! I'm in TROUBLE!"
    NOW when a player gets called by the commisioner, they're like: "So? Let 'em fine me. I don't give a DAMN! I got ENDORSEMENTS! The commissioner can kiss my a**!!!"
    My how times have changed!

    yea so wat happened after he broke tha rim?

  • @Ariamaluum
    @Ariamaluum 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    @Nickcat5. That was due to his drug use coke and marijuana. Against superstars, he would stay clean but against lesser players, he would party and snort. In his book, he said he drank, smoked weed, and had sex but I really think it was the coke. In college, I think he would have ended up with a drinking and sex addiction because he had such superior talent. It wouldn't have mattered. I think the NBA actually helped him.

  • @Nickcat5
    @Nickcat5 13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @bushhhhhh11 A College career would have helped him. There was definitely some talent ,but he was entirely too inconsistant. He often played well against the better centers but would disappear aginst the lesser ones. I grew tired of defending him to his detractors & I found myself agreeing with them after a few years.

    Love this "Chocalate Thundah" dunk. As Dawkins walks away from the shattered remains...one of the guys on the other team's bench jumps up quickly and hides behind his team-mates as if he thinks Dawkins is gonna break him next. Classic coward.
