According to the novel Bleach: Spirits Are Forever With You Szayelaporro used to be a human alchemist who experimented on prisoners and his brother Ylfordt was a general who provided him with victims. However both were eventually killed by their victims who turned into Hollows. As a Hollow, Szayelaporro consumed his brother and became at first member of Barragarn's court and later 0th Espada. But because of his violent instincts he couldn't concentrate on science so he got rid of them by focusing them on Ylfordt's soul which he separated from himself.

You would think that during the Pernida fight he would have revealed the true power of his zanpakuto was the creation of any counter agent or contingency. Kind of like the shinigami version of reactive evolution.
One of my favorite things about Mayuri's perfection speech is that he was actually speaking partially from experience. I didn't read the Manga so this might be an anime only concept but I doubt it but when Mayuri and Uryu meet for the first time Mayuri keeps going on and on about his complete knowledge of the Quincies and how he wouldn't be able to learn anything new from studying Uryu. Effectively saying that his knowledge of Quincies was perfect. Only to be completely caught off guard by Letzt Stil and was almost killed by it. A big reason he knew he had the fight in the bag was because last time he spouted perfection rhetoric it ended with a hole in his chest.
If Szayel had just said, 'I'm the pinacle of evolution' or any other way of saying 'perfect' Mayuri would have gone easier on him.. It's a real hot button with him Went on a full rant and taught a massive, irony laden, lesson at the Soul Society Annual Grill'nChill one year after one of the 7th seaters declared they had entered the 'perfect' spicy-hot hibachi ribs... Only those above the fifth seat in the squads survived and he is no longer allowed in food competitions
20:17- yes the shot where he eats his own subordinate is creepy on its own, but also because his normally bishonen face is distorted into a weird exaggeration that is a human with Hollow mannerisms. It really sells the monster within.
Kaname Tosen analysis next please! He’s my favorite Bleach character. And like Granz I think Kubo quite liked that character more than the general fanbase
Another aspect of Szayel is the weird sexual morbid aspect. I don’t know how to phrase it. But his aspect, the mannerism he has, as well as his brother’s, both being effeminate, his disregard to his subordinates (which he has a lot of, and they all seem mentally slow), his zanpakuto’s name being sexual, and his theme song being called “R*pe me”. There’s something fishy about him, how he came to be, his demotion from rank 0 and all Also forcingly impregnating someone to rebirth himself. It’s all wtf I think he actually scared me as much as As Nodt
He's the quintessential mad scientist and his willingness to do nightmarish experiments on even those from his own side makes him quite the horror. His cheery facade makes him all the more unnerving. It's karma that he met his end at the hands of another monstrous scientist who commits the exact same atrocities.
Mayuri vs Szayelaporro was my favorite bleach fight because I thought that Syal's power to come back to life by robbing an enemy's life force was so broken, but Mayuri countered it in the most brutal way possible.
Szayel, Starrk, Hallibel, and Grimmjow are my favorite espada's. I'm so glad he's back! He's so entertaining and I love his madness. Him and Mayuri are my favorites.
I'm so glad one of my favourite Espadas is finally getting the respect he deserves. I swear back in the day I kept thinking that Szayel was MAD underrated. Yes, he did perhaps spend more time than he should have on screen, but I felt like overall he did a good usage of that time. Everyone keeps talking about Mayuri's speech of perfection but to me Szayel's speech about the phoenix and how he had not tried to eliminate death from his cycle, but incorporated it, was just as good.

He also creates technology to assist him, which multiplies his power further, like Kisuke Urahara and Aizen tended to do. *For Example:* The device that Nnoitra uses to beat Neliel Tu Odelschwanck seems to be an imitation of Aizen's Kyokasuigetsu. *TLDR:* Szayelaporro Granz is ridiculously powerful, he just happened to get paired against the one Captain that is capable of killing everyone in Gotei 13, through ridiculous means.
The novel cfyow says Him and his brother when humans killed people and experiment on them eventually a hallow killed them. they became hallows separate already they ate each other and everyone around them and fused he later hated his brothers bloodlust and forced him out depowering him he wanted to experiment and become a perfect being without flaws, the bloodlust was the flaw but he loved the high power boost
@IN REGENERATIONE Vasto Lorde have a huge difference in scaling. For Example, Barragan has never had to compete for dominance in Hueco Mundo, over 1000 years. The sole exception was in his fight with Ikomikidomoe, which he fought to a draw with, making the creature retreat. Later, Ikomikidomoe would try to enter the Royal Palace and consume the Soul King. I believe that he was used by Oetsu Nimaiya to create the first Zanpakuto, unless I am a little off on the Lore.
Ive been madly in love with this character since I was a teenager, hes been my favorite anime character of all time for YEARS now and this new chapter made me so happy in ways you cant even begin to understand
Szayelaporro is the symbol of madness, according to Barragan when he tells the 10 reasons why a person dies. It shows that Szayel is basically the madman scientist who likes to play supreme being because of his intelligence but he succumbs to his madness many times. It really is awesome how Mayuri literally lectures and teaches Szayel a lesson on what it truly means to be a scientist
On the topic of Hollow Identity and brotherhood, people always bring up Szayelapporo and Illforte as some enigma but it always struck me as a non-mystery. Even without just handwaving it as 'found-family', we've got plenty of evidence in the manga : 1. Basic Hollows have a clear 1 to 1 human identity, as made clear with Acidwire and Shrieker. 2. Becoming an Arrancar allows a hollow to still retain their identity if they had one as a Hollow, as seen with Grand Fisher. 3. Even though becoming a Hollow means gaining a mask and detaching from one's identity, there is still a 'dominant' identity present, especially in Adjuchas-class and higher Menos, as Grimmjow's flashback makes clear. So all of this culminates to basically making it pretty easy to conclude that a pair of brothers could die and retain their identity when they become Hollows, and then go on to become Arrancar with that same retained identity. I'd always just assumed that Szayel and his brother died at the same time as a part of some sort of tragedy that left them unable to move on, causing them both to go hollow at the same time.
To clear up the issue with Szayelaporro and Yylfordt being "brothers", in Spirits Are Forever With You II, it is stated that Szayel used to be Espada 0 but as he hated a part of himself he split apart and thus came Yylfordt...there is also more to it from when they were human
Ok I never know he was Espada 0. but I did though he was more like 5-2, but now I know better. But on that topic he and his brother in that story they are horrible being wend they were alive
I think Tommo knows this, but he said at the beginning of the vid he was only going to refer to canon material, SAFWY has not been declared cannon... or at least it wasn't when I last checked. It is some neat backstory if it turns out to be canon :D

Szayelaporro was honestly probably my personal favorite Espada, with only Grimmjow and perhaps Ulquiorra being near him. But this probably comes down to my love of the scientist/smart/prep-based characters with Mayuri being my favorite Bleach character in general and Urahara being another one of my top ten favorites. Szayelaporro's Res is actually really cool and poweful too and I actually really like his understated, base form with the glasses as his Hollow mask. I loved seeing him appear as a hallucination to Mayuri in the TYBW Arc and the new chapter (and hopefully new upcoming arc) showing him again was also really cool!
Szayelapporo is definitely one of my favorite characters among many. He is definitely one of my favorite espada. Unless I’m just wrong, and this may be in just the anime, I haven’t checked, but I think Mayuri made copies of his organs and for that fight had two sets of everything (which also doesn’t particularly make sense). Szayelaporro, much like Kabuto in Naturo, is such an interesting and underutilized character trope of somewhat effeminate mad scientist. They are both my favorites of their respective series and I was so excited to see Szayel come back in both the TYBW and Hell arcs!

The fact that Kubo used him 2 different times to promote HELL and that he was the original CERO makes him such a fascinating character. I just really wish Kubo would gain full creative control over his work.
The first time i watched Szayel death i got horrified to how cruel that was. His death made me feel sorry for him and i think that's pretty well done from kubo, you have this crazy fcker who you thought you wouldn't feel sorry for. That truly made me horrified
Watching the Espada stuff, I really did find myself wondering about the textiles industry of Hueco Mundo. Everyone had these amazingly cool designs for their costumes so clearly there were some unsung heroes behind the scenes that kept all these guys and gals looking fantastic.
Szayelaporro is definitely my favorite Espada and even makes my top 5 for favorite Bleach characters. An absolutely wonderful character in all aspects of his design. I popped when I saw him come back during the TYBW and the Hell chapter.

Szayelaporro and Ilfort were one being once upon a time they were known as Cien Granz he was the original espada #0 but then they separated and became Szayelaporro and Ilfort Granz Cien appears in SAFWY
He is my favourite Espada. I think you should have mentioned safwy because the novels explain how Szayelaporro and Illfort became hollow brothers, why he was kicked out of Espada and why he helped Nnoitora with getting rid of Neliel.
Szayelaporro is one of my favourite characters, the dude is down right insane but a freaking genius at the same time, his main fight, it's a very creative fight, if mayuri hadn't of shown up, renji and uriyu.... And nels fraccion would all be gone. But yea, awesome character.
Never was a big Szayelaporro fan, but it is very cool to see him return in this new final arc. I think I would've rather chosen Nnoitra to return instead though......he has always been way more intimidating to me than Szayel.
Since you posed the question I gave it some quick thought. They were brothers in life. They each became hollows. Szayelaporro at some point consumed Yylfordt before he became a Gillian. I say this because in Grimjow's flashbacks you see that at Gillian and beyond, even when you're consumed, you still exist. You don't seem to become a part of the hollow that consumed you from that point onward. Szayelaporro (with Yylfordt) then became an Adjuchas and eventually a Vasto Lorde. Later he became an Arrancar, specifically Espada 0. We know that Aaroniero was an Espada in the previous iteration. I would imagine that he was an Espada when Szayelaporro was Espada 0. Since Aaroniero has the powers of Metastacia, they can alter their appearance and powers with those abilities to some extent. I could see Szayelaporro working with Aaroniero. Or rather, forced them into experiments to help him separate Yylfordt in his pursuit of perfection. Szayelaporro wanted to separate a certain aspect of himself, specifically his older brother Yylfordt who he had consumed at some point. The reason for this is that it seems as though Yylfordt had a strong enough will of his own to most likely become a Menos had he not been consumed by Szayelaporro. This was affecting him in a way he thought of as negatively. Focusing on a single aspect of one's powers and manifesting it is very much something we know Aaroniero can do with Metastacia's powers as they turned themself into Kaien Shiba and used his powers. They were most likely Espada together also at this point in time. This is the best I could think of while watching this video the first time. Motive, means and timing. Everything seems to line up.

So yeah, szayel and Illfort being brothers when they were human makes the most sense. They both hollofied upon their death and both had strong will so they both eventually became Minos Grande. Szayel was found by Aizen at some point and recruited while Ilfort wondered around until he met Grimmjow which led to him eventually meeting Aizen and reuniting with his brother. I heard his backstory was revealed in one of the lightnovels. I wonder if that's officially Canon now as it explains why he was originally an Espada, left then became one again. As well as the deal with his brother and, most importantly, why he would end up in hell.

I think the scene between Aizen and Szayel is meant to emphasize how most of the Arrancar are only serving Aizen out of fear of his power, yet you still have characters like Szayel (and Barragan) who are acting of their own volition despite knowing it could summon Aizen's wrath. Yet Aizen can see through Szayel's facade and calls him out on it, causing Szayel to almost panic. Up until point, we only witness Grimmjow acting insubordinate towards Aizen. I think it was a great scene to introduce a sense of distrust and disloyalty between some of the Arrancar and Aizen.
An extension on your point about the Granz brothers and hollows as a whole that I've been wondering about. Considering that hollows are an amalgam of souls, if a hollow is sent to Hell does that mean that all the merged souls are condemned along with the primary personality that caused the hollow to be condemned in the first place?

*For Example:* The device that Nnoitra uses to beat Neliel Tu Odelschwanck seems to be an imitation of Aizen's Kyokasuigetsu.
*TLDR:* Szayelaporro Granz is ridiculously powerful, he just happened to get paired against the one Captain that is capable of killing everyone in Gotei 13, through ridiculous means.
The novel cfyow says Him and his brother when humans killed people and experiment on them eventually a hallow killed them. they became hallows separate already they ate each other and everyone around them and fused he later hated his brothers bloodlust and forced him out depowering him he wanted to experiment and become a perfect being without flaws, the bloodlust was the flaw but he loved the high power boost
@IN REGENERATIONE Vasto Lorde have a huge difference in scaling. For Example, Barragan has never had to compete for dominance in Hueco Mundo, over 1000 years. The sole exception was in his fight with Ikomikidomoe, which he fought to a draw with, making the creature retreat.
Later, Ikomikidomoe would try to enter the Royal Palace and consume the Soul King. I believe that he was used by Oetsu Nimaiya to create the first Zanpakuto, unless I am a little off on the Lore.

Ive been madly in love with this character since I was a teenager, hes been my favorite anime character of all time for YEARS now and this new chapter made me so happy in ways you cant even begin to understand
Szayelaporro is the symbol of madness, according to Barragan when he tells the 10 reasons why a person dies. It shows that Szayel is basically the madman scientist who likes to play supreme being because of his intelligence but he succumbs to his madness many times. It really is awesome how Mayuri literally lectures and teaches Szayel a lesson on what it truly means to be a scientist
Honestly, Szayelaporro was my favorite of the Espada. I loved his character design and personality. Plus his trolling of Uryu and Renji.
On the topic of Hollow Identity and brotherhood, people always bring up Szayelapporo and Illforte as some enigma but it always struck me as a non-mystery. Even without just handwaving it as 'found-family', we've got plenty of evidence in the manga :
1. Basic Hollows have a clear 1 to 1 human identity, as made clear with Acidwire and Shrieker.
2. Becoming an Arrancar allows a hollow to still retain their identity if they had one as a Hollow, as seen with Grand Fisher.
3. Even though becoming a Hollow means gaining a mask and detaching from one's identity, there is still a 'dominant' identity present, especially in Adjuchas-class and higher Menos, as Grimmjow's flashback makes clear.
So all of this culminates to basically making it pretty easy to conclude that a pair of brothers could die and retain their identity when they become Hollows, and then go on to become Arrancar with that same retained identity.
I'd always just assumed that Szayel and his brother died at the same time as a part of some sort of tragedy that left them unable to move on, causing them both to go hollow at the same time.

To clear up the issue with Szayelaporro and Yylfordt being "brothers", in Spirits Are Forever With You II, it is stated that Szayel used to be Espada 0 but as he hated a part of himself he split apart and thus came Yylfordt...there is also more to it from when they were human

Szayelaporro was honestly probably my personal favorite Espada, with only Grimmjow and perhaps Ulquiorra being near him. But this probably comes down to my love of the scientist/smart/prep-based characters with Mayuri being my favorite Bleach character in general and Urahara being another one of my top ten favorites. Szayelaporro's Res is actually really cool and poweful too and I actually really like his understated, base form with the glasses as his Hollow mask. I loved seeing him appear as a hallucination to Mayuri in the TYBW Arc and the new chapter (and hopefully new upcoming arc) showing him again was also really cool!
Szayelapporo is definitely one of my favorite characters among many. He is definitely one of my favorite espada. Unless I’m just wrong, and this may be in just the anime, I haven’t checked, but I think Mayuri made copies of his organs and for that fight had two sets of everything (which also doesn’t particularly make sense). Szayelaporro, much like Kabuto in Naturo, is such an interesting and underutilized character trope of somewhat effeminate mad scientist. They are both my favorites of their respective series and I was so excited to see Szayel come back in both the TYBW and Hell arcs!

The first time i watched Szayel death i got horrified to how cruel that was. His death made me feel sorry for him and i think that's pretty well done from kubo, you have this crazy fcker who you thought you wouldn't feel sorry for. That truly made me horrified
Watching the Espada stuff, I really did find myself wondering about the textiles industry of Hueco Mundo. Everyone had these amazingly cool designs for their costumes so clearly there were some unsung heroes behind the scenes that kept all these guys and gals looking fantastic.
Szayelaporro is definitely my favorite Espada and even makes my top 5 for favorite Bleach characters. An absolutely wonderful character in all aspects of his design. I popped when I saw him come back during the TYBW and the Hell chapter.

Never was a big Szayelaporro fan, but it is very cool to see him return in this new final arc. I think I would've rather chosen Nnoitra to return instead though......he has always been way more intimidating to me than Szayel.
Since you posed the question I gave it some quick thought.
They were brothers in life. They each became hollows. Szayelaporro at some point consumed Yylfordt before he became a Gillian. I say this because in Grimjow's flashbacks you see that at Gillian and beyond, even when you're consumed, you still exist. You don't seem to become a part of the hollow that consumed you from that point onward. Szayelaporro (with Yylfordt) then became an Adjuchas and eventually a Vasto Lorde. Later he became an Arrancar, specifically Espada 0.
We know that Aaroniero was an Espada in the previous iteration. I would imagine that he was an Espada when Szayelaporro was Espada 0. Since Aaroniero has the powers of Metastacia, they can alter their appearance and powers with those abilities to some extent. I could see Szayelaporro working with Aaroniero. Or rather, forced them into experiments to help him separate Yylfordt in his pursuit of perfection.
Szayelaporro wanted to separate a certain aspect of himself, specifically his older brother Yylfordt who he had consumed at some point. The reason for this is that it seems as though Yylfordt had a strong enough will of his own to most likely become a Menos had he not been consumed by Szayelaporro. This was affecting him in a way he thought of as negatively. Focusing on a single aspect of one's powers and manifesting it is very much something we know Aaroniero can do with Metastacia's powers as they turned themself into Kaien Shiba and used his powers. They were most likely Espada together also at this point in time.
This is the best I could think of while watching this video the first time. Motive, means and timing. Everything seems to line up.

So yeah, szayel and Illfort being brothers when they were human makes the most sense. They both hollofied upon their death and both had strong will so they both eventually became Minos Grande. Szayel was found by Aizen at some point and recruited while Ilfort wondered around until he met Grimmjow which led to him eventually meeting Aizen and reuniting with his brother.
I heard his backstory was revealed in one of the lightnovels. I wonder if that's officially Canon now as it explains why he was originally an Espada, left then became one again. As well as the deal with his brother and, most importantly, why he would end up in hell.

I think the scene between Aizen and Szayel is meant to emphasize how most of the Arrancar are only serving Aizen out of fear of his power, yet you still have characters like Szayel (and Barragan) who are acting of their own volition despite knowing it could summon Aizen's wrath. Yet Aizen can see through Szayel's facade and calls him out on it, causing Szayel to almost panic.
Up until point, we only witness Grimmjow acting insubordinate towards Aizen. I think it was a great scene to introduce a sense of distrust and disloyalty between some of the Arrancar and Aizen.
Mayuri is basically just the Batman of Bleach. With enough prep he could pretty much beat anyone lol.
An extension on your point about the Granz brothers and hollows as a whole that I've been wondering about.
Considering that hollows are an amalgam of souls, if a hollow is sent to Hell does that mean that all the merged souls are condemned along with the primary personality that caused the hollow to be condemned in the first place?

One of the coolest moments from the Hell chapter movie is the fact that he fires off his Gran-Rey Cero. Much to the same effect as Grimmjoww's.
This is one of those scenes that just makes you feel awful for poor Nemu.
