Quick shifting would have dropped that into the high 10s

Its an old bike not sure if the transmission could handle that…

It definitely can. And will do "no lift shifts" also. Most bikes will, some require more care doing that than others. GL1500s and 1800's even will take that, very well in fact.
Former mechanic who used to verify this on most test rides....borrowed used gl1500 would wheelie when you bang second with gf on the back, no problem. Easy and consistent.

    Nice launch 👌

I was kind of expecting it to be just under 11 seconds. Its quicker than my 75’ Kawasaki Z1, but slower than my 600 Ninja. Don’t get me wrong I got a soft spot for this classic bike.

Launch is huge on these bikes, experienced riders will get under 11 easy.

Hi Shane! I see and hear a 4-1 exhaust. Looks like the kerker (like mine) but with a different slip on? Sounds good and not as harsh as the kerker (also 2,5 comp baffle) What slip on or what baffle do you use?

It's actually a Hindle and that is the muffler that comes with it. I think it is a smaller pipe than the Kerker setup.

Going easy on the shift points.

It shifts like a tractor. My dad had an '85, new. Second gear was toast in 2500 miles.

It's not a yz125, but if shifting it makes you think "tractor", maybe the shifter pivots and rod ends (two of them) haven't been lubed since 1989. Former yamaha/ honda tech....I know you can usually go 1st through 5th without closing the throttle at all. This does require clutch usage, the shift "dogs" are undercut, and won't pull out of gear without a momentary lapse in power, but just a tap on the clutch. Most Japanese bikes will do this no problem. Even Gold Wings do it very well. 1500 and 1800 will wheelie a bit after a quick no lift 1-2 shift. Your bike is more likely to spin.
Those were pretty easy, slow shifts in the video.

@@firstielasty1162 V-Max is known for 2nd gear problems with hard use. They shift fine, it's just a matter of how often you want to split the cases. This one shifts without the clutch, no issues at all. The shifter has been lubricated at the joints, and it has a Barnett coil spring conversion. They just don't shift like a modern sportbike. Which is to be expected, as their engine is based on one that made its debut in a touring bike. I don't see much reason to beat the hell out of it, they aren't very fast no matter who is riding one, these days. :D

earlier trans did have issues but all of them can get bad gears from banging especially 2nd gear .

So why are you clutching and killing throttle while shifting gears? It's a Yamaha V-max......it`s build to get kicked. Now try again but now only full throttle from green to the end without clutching. You will see the V-Max can do it in 8 sec. Little advice....Don't be scared but show respect. Good luck! Yamaha rules!

These bikes shift like tractors. I don't want to hurt the trans....notoriously easy to do with one of these. I have plenty of much faster motorcycles.

First to second without clutch is how to create trans issues with 2nd AND 5th gear. Clutch to second gear at least
