    Wish big companies kept making these kind of retro games. It's so cool to see these pushing the console to it's limit.

    • @PigsysRetroGameDevTutorials
      @PigsysRetroGameDevTutorials  3 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      Me too. I think there is a decent market for it, adn the games are still fun to play. I would love to see an official all-in-one Sega retro console (including Master System to the Dreamcast), but that's just a dream :)

    • @BIastProcX

      Problem is that they wouldn't make it due to low sales and the console itself not being sold anymore

    • @AlexvrbX

      @@PigsysRetroGameDevTutorials The only company focused on low-level hardware-accurate FPGA replicas is probably Analogue, and they're EXPENSIVE and not multi-system. If Sega or someone else released an all-in-one, it would likely just be a mix of emulators strapped together with duct-tape (or worse, just an external front-end). Not terrible, but not as good as original hardware, and nothing special. Might as well get an Xbox Series S and install RetroArch! Maybe get a Sega console themed skin for the outside, lol.
      I could accept that IF they included special functionality not easily found in an mITX PC mod for an old console. For example, install a functional toploader drive capable of reading CD- and GD-ROMs directly, plus a Genesis/MD slot and some custom code to allow the included emulators to directly access the carts rather than requiring ROMs. Give users the choice of different shells and UIs with the same internals, for example you could have one that looks and boots like a Saturn, another that is modeled after a Dreamcast, maybe a CDX. Support for the native controllers in addition to USB and BT would be a massive boon. THAT would be something I could really get behind.
      But uh, yeah. That's REALLY just a Dream.

      I would love that SEGA make FPGA device like:
      1.) CD-32x as ADD ON with HDMI output for users who already have old Gen/MegaDrive. With faster cd drive inside.
      2.) For new users: MegaDrive CD32X hdmi console (with cartridge input and CD drive).
      Nothing more😁. That would be great. 🥰

    Nice shout out to Stef! Literally, he's the reason why homebrew has exploded on the MD. I'm an assembly programmer and very comfortable with it, but I realize most people just don't have the time (or even energy) to ramp up in Assembly and direct hardware. SGDK has given some impressive capabilities with a low entry to barrier on the MD.

    • @PigsysRetroGameDevTutorials
      @PigsysRetroGameDevTutorials  3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I probably would never have gotten into Megadrive dev if it weren't for SGDK. Modern C compilers seem to be very efficient and coding in assembly is something of an acquired taste nowadays (although stillI like to watch some ChibiAkumas assembly videos from time to time). Even the Saturn is getting some good C-based dev kits now.

    These projects are amazing; pushing older hardware impresses me more than most indie games I see coming out for Steam, Switch or PS4. How about the port of Shinobi arcade for the Mega Drive? That’s looking, sounding and playing great so far and I was hoping it to get finalized in 2022.

    Great compilation of information, the Mega Man 4,5, and 6 game looks really good. Metal Slug looks crazy, just wow. And that Sunset Riders definitely looks better than the SNES version, I own the original Genesis version.
    You know what game would be an amazing 2D platformer de-make that I'm surprised Insomniac hasn't done yet? Ratchet and Clank, so many ideas could be reworked and translated to a 2D plane, not to mention all the amazing weapons and gadgets. I think it would benefit best from being pixel based on modern consoles, but a 32-bit version, or even someone talented at 16-bit hardware pushing could pull it off.

    Second Dimension also has several genesis titles in the works around 2021-2022. They make an actively developed BASIC compiler called SecondBASIC. The previous BASIC compiler on the scene BasiegaXorz has SegaCD and 32x support though it's been unmaintaned for many years.

    • @PigsysRetroGameDevTutorials
      @PigsysRetroGameDevTutorials  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That's interesting. The C compiler used by SGDK is very efficient, but BASIC compilers have a reputation for being slow (although the code is easier for most people to write). I remember a MVG video about a BASIC development kit for the Saturn a while back.

    • @GconduitYTubeAccount
      @GconduitYTubeAccount 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@PigsysRetroGameDevTutorials Some assume since interpreted BASIC is slow that compiled BASIC is as well. There's even a compiler for the Atari 2600 that has performance enough to produce side scrolling Super Mario clones called batari BASIC. To add to your in development list Second Dimension has an early demo of Eyra the Crow Maiden available. Plus, a long delayed RPG called Affinity Sorrow getting back into active dev in 2021-2022.

    Boy, would've been nice to have this "SGDK" back in the day, instead of pouring blood sweat and tears into the machine. As much as I love accessibility and modern tools, I feel in some ways it helps further the lack of respect for what we had to go through back in the days. I don't think modern homebrew enthusiasts can even come to grips with the fact that we didn't have Google and the internet, let alone how completely archaic and crippled our tools were. Cool looking homebrews in this video though... Subbed.

      It was a nice surprise to see you pop up in the comments section! I loved your work on Desert Strike (among other games). I will be starting an SGDK tutorial series within the next few weeks, and it would be nice to get the occasional perspective from someone like yourself about how much the modern way of doing things differs from the old (I imagine that what takes just a few lines of C in SGDK to achieve would have taken a few dozen of lines of assembly back in the 90s).
      What I like most about the new tools we have at our disposal today is the ability to quickly change something and then be able to test the result within seconds, something which I guess wasn't possible back then. Some people are still doing it largely the old way though, for example Matt Phillips (Tanglewood) and Sik (Arkagis Escape).

    @108Stars 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    Great video, I wasn't aware SF Alpha was being ported. I always thought that would be cool. Some of the sprites of the 32-bit Capcom fighting games have already been used 20 years ago in Taiwanese pirate games, so I knew they could work. Problem was that those games were rubbish. Top Fighter 2000 MKVII had Ryu from SF Alpha I believe, and Cyclops from the X-Men: Children of the Atom. Was cool to see those detailed sprites on MD, will be even better to have it play well.
    There was even a pirate King of Fighters 98. I had a cart once. It was basically an SNK vs Street Fighter game, using ripped and badly converted sprites. Looking forward to see a version with more effort put into it.
    As for the Mega-CD. SGDK is one factor, but I think the audience is another. There were just fewer MCD systems sold in the first place, and today with the old disc drives having become unreliable I would always get a cart if I had the choice. This will be improved somewhat with the flashcarts offering MCD support, but I don't think those have been widely adopted yet since they aren't cheap. But over time more people will have MCD compatibility that way.

    • @PigsysRetroGameDevTutorials
      @PigsysRetroGameDevTutorials  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Some of those Taiwanese pirate games weren't too bad.
      Regarding the Mega CD, I like the approach that Sik took with Arkagis Escape - a game that works on the regular Megadrive, but offers extra power for those with a Mega CD attached. It would be interesting to see an accurate survey of how many of the originally sold Megardives, Mega CDs, SNESs ect are still in active use.

    Awesome!! I hope to see Shinobi Arcade finished soon too. Shadow Dancer Arcade would be another great port for Sega Genesis. What impressed me more is the fact that most of these game looks and plays like a AAA game from big companies that were released between 1993 and 1996. Sometimes even better!! I hope that one day the Homebrew Dev Kits for the Master System/Sega CD/32X/Saturn and Dreamcast can achieve this same level of performance: new or original Homebrew, ports or hacked games that looks and plays as good as those made in the golden days of these consoles.
    I Know that KOS for the Dreamcast is really improving but still there's a great gap of performance between games using it and the old games that used the official Sega Katana kits. KOS seems perfect for 2D or Indie 3D games for now, but still a long way for making some thing like Sonic Adventures, RE Code Veronica or Shenmues. Maybe one day...
    And Thanks for the greats Castlevania and GG Shinobi Projects. Love both games!

    Back in 1996, I remember wanting SFA so much on the Mega Drive and one of the kids at school trolled me, saying he had it at home and all that, I believed him, at the time, many things existed and we didn't know, but one thing I was certain is that there was no reason the Mega Drive couldn't run SFA, they only had to make it happen, a bit later I also knew that a KOF game was possible on the SNES, now, seeing these fan efforts bringing such legendary games to the console proves that could have happened, while most of the issue was the cartridge storage limitation and how much that would cost, technically, it was possible and I'm eager to sit one day and finally play these games as I envisioned them as a kid.

    The Shinobi game for GG... The one where you had different colored (outfits?) Ninjas that each had their own special abilities. I credit that game for my idea of a Sonic game where different Chaos Emeralds would transform Sonic and give him different abilities. Like being able to swim (Mer-Sonic, lol), a fiery Sonic, an armored/knight Sonic, and a super bouncy Sonic. This one was inspired a bit by Sonic Spinball in how he'd ricochet inside some of the bosses/machines, but a lot faster. There were probably more ability types I had thought of, but that was well over 20 years ago.

  • @reppy
    @reppy 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    I love seeing new games on old hardware. For some reason, I've encountered many new retro-inspired games developed for powerful hardware have a sort of uncanny valley thing going on. I'll often find a sprite that looks a little too high res compared to the other sprites. Or you'll see a graphical effect being used that would have been impossible on 16-bit hardware. It can take me out of the experience a little bit.
    In my opinion, having limitations can spur creativity.

    Is SGDK the reason why the Genesis has so many more new games then the SNES?

    • @PigsysRetroGameDevTutorials
      @PigsysRetroGameDevTutorials  3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I would say that it is probably the main reason. The SNES doesn't seem to have any kind if user-friendly developers kit right now. The Game Boy and GBA both have good fan development support, so maybe there's something about the SNES hardware that makes it particularly difficult to create a dev kit for? Even the Sega Saturn is getting good development tool these days, so it's a shame the SNES is being left behind.
