Happy New Year everyone! This video took a while to put together, but it's always interesting to see what other people are up to with Mega Drive development. I tried my best to make sure that all new games were included and that all info was accurate, but I'm sure I made some mistakes! Please feel free to mention any games I left out. All the best!
all the work is apparent in your video, I believe you, it must have been a very long video to prepare but in the end it has so much quality to it, it is incredible. I hope your dedication will turn more eyes on your project and on the project of the homebrew world. Thanks for your work and we can almost already say happy new year where I am so all the best for 2023 :)
It's amazing to see the level of arcade conversions that are possible on the Genesis with modern dev tools and all the accumulated knowledge and information that's available! Just goes to show you how much more power was under the hood still left to be fully realized for that generation of consoles. I'm as excited for these projects as I ever was back in the day. Would love to see a company like Sega get back on board with this community and release official cartridges again. I think there's enough of a niche market to support new titles and updated re-releases/special editions of the classics!
I think Sega should release a retro console capable of emulating all their consoles and arcade boards, complete with an optical drive and cartridge port. They could then start selling physical games again. Probably just a dream at this point though...
This is also a great demonstration as to why new upgraded consoles doesn't need to happen yet. The power that is under the hood of both the PS5 and Xbox Series X is absolutely ridiculous, so the some developers need to learn how to max out what they have instead of waiting for the next updated machine to get what they want. It's what made the 8-bit and 16-bit so special as it separated the talented, the hard workers and the lazy as we knew who were the real stars and what games truly delivered instead of being blinded by smokes and mirrors.
Funny how the fighting games work it's just missing levels of color, some animations.Ive even seen a trial that it's hard to support big power moves, but I see they've managed. The dark stalkers lining seems like eternal champions,so if eternal champion had a run say on the playstation one it would of had an edge to it.
Man, still so much love for the Sega MD! Never would have thought when I was a kid this would happen. Thanks for great vid Pigsy, and wishing everyone the best (and lots of gaming) for 2023! Stay well!
Nice list. I'm definitely looking forward to Castlevania, Robocop, Final Fight, and Zabu. If someone had told me in the 90s that new Mega Drive games would be getting released in the 2020s I would have thought they were crazy. SGDK is a big part of this. I encourage people to support the Patreon.

Thank you for including my project or projects. I was surprised you mentioned my Willow and Metroid Project. About 20% of the Art Assets have been created for Metroid. Most of the music is done as well. Metroid is on Pause until you come out with more tutorials. LOL! I do a little bit of work on Willow each month still.
You go by so many different names that I didn't know which one to use, so I just went with your youtube channel name! I thought people might find the Metroid game interesting, so I thought I would give them a taste. I plan on getting the level collision/large maps tutorials up later this year, but in the meantime you have plenty to sink your teeth into with Darkstalkers. Getting the controls right will be a big challenge, but I'm sure you'll have fun figuring it all out. Looking forward to seeing more from your projects in 2023!

Some amazing projects coming! I'm really happy about Ninja Baseball Bat Man, WindJammers, R-Type, RoboCop, The Simpsons, Cadillacs and Dinosaurs, Final Fight, Ghouls 'n Ghosts and Strider. I really love your videos mate, they are so wholesome and fully of enthusiasm. These videos you do on upcoming games are great and it's wonderful to see so much amazing work from passionate developers. Is there a website where all these new games for retro consoles are listed by chance? I find the information hard to come by.
Thanks. I think there were even more games than last year. Hopefully we will start to see some MCD/32X projects in the future, but of course the barrier to entry is currently much higher than doing some stuff on SGDK
So much promising stuff to look forward to. Something that I would love to se is if someone coul do a romhack of Mega Bomberman and make it look and play like Master Blaster (Amiga) with support for 4 players. Also, happy new year everyone!
Great selection! I'm really looking forward to playing "Life on Mars", as it looks and sounds so amazing! That, of course, after playing a physical version of the mighty Castlevania port that you're so masterfully working on! Another thing: was that sick Simpsons' logo scaling on the MD??? Holy cow!!
These look so cool, glad so many developers are looking back at Genesis/Megadrive hardware. I've dreamed of a new Shinobi 3 since the mid-90s, hope someone takes on that challenge some day. Can you imagine a Shinobi 3 Metroidvania? Could be the best game ever!
@@PigsysRetroGameDevTutorials , I do hope that, after you give the more linear version of Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, that you make a version of the game that is a combination of the PS1 and Sega Saturn ports of the game, as well as port that to the SNES/NSFC as well.
This is a very cool compilation of indie/fan works in development, and I'm very glad to learn about all of them. I look forward to looking into some of these, especially Cursed Knight! Happy New Years!
esta increible la cantidad de nuevos juegos para la sega gensis , pero sigo esperando con ansias el castlevania que estas porteando para la consola . saludos desde colombia
Sega won't be able to officially release that new Ancient Corp / Yuzo Koshiro Mega Drive game, unfortunately, not as a cartridge designed to run on original consoles. GG Aleste III received an official Game Gear catalogue number, but didn't receive a GG cartridge release. This is ultimately due to Sega not being able to provide consumer support for legacy consoles, I believe.
While not entirely true, i get your point. The REAL situation is that the Sega that exists today does not have the balls that Sega of America had in the 90s (the kind of BRASS balls that allow them to say "Fuggit, let's TRY something different") . There is an easier path for Sega to take to achieve something similar and the most of the infrastructure is already in place. Sega and RetroBit already have a licensing deal in place and RetroBit already publishes games on the #MegaGen. Ancient would need to partner with RetroBit for the release of their shooter then All Sega would need to do is bless RetroBit with the legal approval to use the seal of quality and the logos for publishing a FULLY LICENSED OFFICIAL release (oh, and give it a proper T-Code).
There are so many new projects it's getting hard to follow everything. I'm not complaining though, I feel like we're living through a second Mega Drive golden age. Just wanted to mention that TiagoSC and Pyron are working on a Sunset Riders remake. There was an update a few months back.
I for one would LOVE to see ports of 1st & 3rd party games that never came to SEGA Genesis / Mega Drive for whatever the reason. Much like that port of arcade 'Shinobi', a SEGA arcade ports like 'Alien Syndrome' or a 4-,player 'Quartet', as well as games that were SNES 3rd party exclusives, such as 'Ninja Warriors' would be amazing to see ported!
See, when I say that the Mega Drive is on FIRE, I don't mean it! Yuzo Koshiro is back in the game, the creator of SGDK himself is developing a game with the team that produced the legendary Paprium and more: Darkstalkers, Final Fight, Real Bout Fatal Fury Special and a classic Fatal Fury REMAKE being released for console. Not only that, but we need to stop to ADMIRE the beautiful graphics of ZPF and Life on Mars, of course, I'm optimistic about the port of Windjamers and R-Type (which are also wonderful), but I believe that these two games will be the new technical pearls of the Mega Drive! That said, I want to thank you Pigsy, for promoting these Mega Drive projects, I loved your video from last year and I hope it becomes a new feature here on the channel! Congratulations 😁👍
a small addition: the same creator of the Mega Drive Fighting Game Engine (Hamoopig), is currently developing a game called Brazookas, I think you might have missed that
Final fight takes place in New York City in the borough of Manhattan.; Another giveaway is the subway stage ; New York is known for its iconic subways.
Man people need to go out purchase a sega genesis/ mega drive from anywhere they can get one..!! In 2023 Send it out have it recapped & have the triple bypass installed. And support all the indie devs ! Let’s bring the good ole 16bit back. Because you can tell the potential is infinite.! Saw some time ago someown was working on cracking the svp chip for development . I’m salvating at the thought. 🤤 Actually putting 16 bit version of games on the svp chip Like virtua cop , virtua tennis Power stone.! And guys that are making proper editing . Like sonic 3d blast developer edition and mk1 arcade edition
Kunio is the name of the series that River City Ransom, Renegade, Crash n The Boys Street Challenge, and several other import games came from. All of those games were developed by Technos Japan. This looks like a port of an existing game, but I'm not entirely sure.
God, I love the Genesis/Mega Drive. I finally loaded the ROMs for your SotN demake onto my Analogue Pocket and holy Hell, does it look amazing! Feels like it's coming along rather nicely! All these others are looking fantastic, too! I'm especially stoked for Black Jewel Reborn. You should probably check out "Coloco DX" coming in 2023 from Tuxedo Games for the Genesis/MD.
This is brilliant. Your other videos look very informative too! We're currently looking for someone to either put the TMNT Hyperstone Heist music in Streets of Rage 2 or the Shredders Revenge sprites in Hyperstone Heist.
Good to see md games still being made ! Might try it myself . And that simpsons game could be good ! In arcades in the 90s that game was popular and had to que to get on it . Alot of fun
The cursed knight has been forgotten last year and the cursed legacy almost forgotten this year. Maybe this is the curse :O Thank you for the highlight :)
@@Ehal256 Not really. Most people play these games on emulator anyway. Anyone who is a collector with real hardware probably has a 32x anyway, plus a Genesis can be modded pretty easily to support 32x games as well.
@@thuggeegaming659 I'm not aware of a way to mod a genesis to play 32x games other than by just plugging in a 32x? Yes there are emulators, but making effective use of the 32x is still likely quite a bit trickier than the base genesis.
@@Ehal256 As for your second point, it's not trickier. An SDK was developed for the Genesis, but it's not impossible to develop one for the 32x. If anyone ever develops one, it would facilitate 32x development.
Wow, thank you for this. I had no idea so many great protects are being worked on. I'm ready excited for the Simpsons arcade port! Better 30 years late than never.
Starting at ground zero (I knew html many years ago, and started learning Java a few years ago but stopped), how do I get from where I am now, to being able to develop Genesis games? I've designed a wrestling game in terms of what it should feature, how it should work, workarounds for the Genesis' color limitations, but as far as actually coding it, I don't truly know any languages.
Awesome stuff being shown off right here,Im surprised to see Metroid among these, can't wait to try them out & also here's what Im looking forward to. Mega Final Fight Cadiliac & Dinosaurs Ninja Baseball Batman Real Bout Fatal Fury R Type Darkstalkers Metroid The Simpsons Arcade I hope the Genesis gets more attention with more Castlevania & Mega Man titles
The version I played is already playing quite well (just the jumping and some other stuff that needs fixing). I'm confident that they will produce a great port in the end.
It's not the first time I see the picture of that bridge in Final Fight CD. I saw it on a magazine ad from the 90's. Then, years later watching emulator gameplays I was like, "where's the new bridge stage??". I have no more insight of where it comes from.
It's wonderful to see the love for the retro scene is getting stronger still (although I don't want it to become too popular, as there's a risk of spoiling things). I really can't take to the modern machines next to the consoles I grew up with. I know other people obviously can, but they're not for me (bar perhaps the Switch), sorry!
I'm Brazilian, and no, here we don't drive on the left side of the road. That was a small oversight on the part of developers. But let me take this opportunity to marvel at such a great looking version of Final Fight for the Mega Drive, and coming from fellow Brazilians at that! Really goes to show how much love that console got in our (not so) little corner of the world. ❤️
I think that Pigsy had mentioned the whole left hand drive thing, as he is from a country, or, rather, a part of a country, where they drive on the left hand side of the road. I am guessing that he lives in Hong Kong, but, as far as I know, both China and Taiwan drive on the right side of the road.
Having The Simpsons Arcade for the Mega/Gen would fulfill a lot of our childhood dreams even 30 or so years later lol That game alone was the reason we even went to Chuck E Cheese etc.
Pigsy: "I'm just a beginner" Also Pigsy: Makes one of the single best looking 16-bit era games on original hardware ever made then or now. That effect you do with the castle walls is just.....omg. I'm currently making an Action RPG Platformer (Take a good beat em up with light fighting game mechanics, then send the characters through platforming levels that can range from anything like Final Fight to Strider to more) that I'm hoping to port to both NeoGeo and Genesis/MD due to all their similarities (with cut-down palettes and sprite budgets for the Sega, obviously). I'm learning the 68000 and Z80 assembly languages and building my engine the old-fashioned way. For me, the art portion is easy, it's the coding portion that's hard, but I'll get there! ChibiAkumas is awesome.
Has anyone tried any 32X game development? It would be nice to see Capcom's Aliens vs Predator for it. It was considered releasing this game for the platform, but probably was canceled when the 32X's sales disappointed.
The question I have is, is this part of emulation/released for all hardware? I know that might be a stupid question but am genuinely curious how the games release.
Hey Pigsy, not to bother you or anything but will you ever make a tutorial on how to save data on the Genesis/MD using SGDK? I haven't been able to find any resources on it.

Happy new year! Its nice to have a video reference for all the new mega drive games. Ill definitely be revisiting this one in the future, thanks!
Happy new year!
I was blown away that so many Genesis games that are in development showed up in one video!
I would love to see some of these get the MSU-MD treatment for CD quality sound.
in brazil we drive on the right side of the road.
(and i love your work)
I thought so. It's strange that they put the traffic on the left (not that I'm complaining as a Brit)
Some amazing projects coming! I'm really happy about Ninja Baseball Bat Man, WindJammers, R-Type, RoboCop, The Simpsons, Cadillacs and Dinosaurs, Final Fight, Ghouls 'n Ghosts and Strider. Do you have any news on the Sunset Riders: Mega Drive Arcade Edition? That was looking very promising so I hope it gets finished.
Unfortunately, Sunset Riders is on hold for now. Hopefully they will get back to it one day as it was looking great
@@PigsysRetroGameDevTutorials , I hope that Mystic Warriors, Wild West C.O.W. Boys of Moo Mesa, and Bucky O'Hare get home conversions as well, and maybe even that Asterix game as well.
SGDK it's a wonderful development tool and it's creating many of these miracles on MEGA
A great look at a thriving homebrew community for the Megadrive. Love to see so many varied games coming out for the system.
Makes me tempted to take a look at Megadrive development myself.
Man, I really need some free time to get into SGDK and port my game to the Mega Drive, it should fit without much problems.
Do it!
Zabu makes me think of the NES Mighty Final Fight :)
Happy new year a great 2023 God bless you.
You too!
I really love your videos mate, they are so wholesome and fully of enthusiasm. These videos you do on upcoming games are great and it's wonderful to see so much amazing work from passionate developers.
Is there a website where all these new games for retro consoles are listed by chance? I find the information hard to come by.
The Simpsons arcade is definitely the one I'm excited about. That game is one of the best coin eaters ever made.
Great coverage dude! 👍
Thanks. I think there were even more games than last year. Hopefully we will start to see some MCD/32X projects in the future, but of course the barrier to entry is currently much higher than doing some stuff on SGDK
@@PigsysRetroGameDevTutorials They'll be some more CD stuff and more 32x ROM hacks like MK2.
Holy cow!!
No other retro console gets as much love as the genesis recently.
Oh my God these are a lot of good games. I cannot wait to see them finished.
*Happy new year Pigsy.*
Happy new year!
@@PigsysRetroGameDevTutorials , I do hope that, after you give the more linear version of Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, that you make a version of the game that is a combination of the PS1 and Sega Saturn ports of the game, as well as port that to the SNES/NSFC as well.
Kunio got that Renegade theme in that track. Banging stuff 👌
Some amazing projects here, I am shocked to see how far alone that Dark Stalkers is. R-type is the one I want the most.
Unfortunately, Sunset is on hold for now (although I did feature it in last year's video)
I for one would LOVE to see ports of 1st & 3rd party games that never came to SEGA Genesis / Mega Drive for whatever the reason.
Much like that port of arcade 'Shinobi',
a SEGA arcade ports like 'Alien Syndrome' or a 4-,player 'Quartet', as well as games that were SNES 3rd party exclusives, such as 'Ninja Warriors' would be amazing to see ported!
Congratulations 😁👍
a small addition: the same creator of the Mega Drive Fighting Game Engine (Hamoopig), is currently developing a game called Brazookas, I think you might have missed that
Man I am SUPER pumped for your SotN demake. Can't wait.
To have an official port they could add it to the nintendo switch genesis catalog. That would be a very cool addition.
Hopefully it'll happen
Final fight takes place in New York City in the borough of Manhattan.; Another giveaway is the subway stage ; New York is known for its iconic subways.
Yeeeeeahhh!!!!....i just got back into my genesis and my mind is blown to find out they still make games for it!!!!
Man people need to go out purchase a sega genesis/ mega drive from anywhere they can get one..!! In 2023
Send it out have it recapped & have the triple bypass installed.
And support all the indie devs !
Let’s bring the good ole 16bit back.
Because you can tell the potential is infinite.!
Saw some time ago someown was working on cracking the svp chip for development .
I’m salvating at the thought. 🤤
Actually putting 16 bit version of games on the svp chip
Like virtua cop , virtua tennis
Power stone.!
And guys that are making proper editing .
Like sonic 3d blast developer edition and mk1 arcade edition
I still have my original sega Genesis since 1988. Still works. Great to see its still kicking lol
1:05 Is anyone working on a software development kit for the Sega Saturn?
I encourage people to support the Patreon ♥
PLEASE DO THE GG SHINOBI. I would like to help and support you in art if you like
Thanks. I already had someone volunteer some art, but I may need more help too. It's on hold for now though, but I will pick it up again in future.
Happy new year MegaDrive/Genesis...
Looking forward to the Gg shinobi port , that was an awesome game !
Man this was so great to watch. I can't wait for the full version of Robocop and Final Fight!!!
Kunio is the name of the series that River City Ransom, Renegade, Crash n The Boys Street Challenge, and several other import games came from. All of those games were developed by Technos Japan. This looks like a port of an existing game, but I'm not entirely sure.
Wow great job covering all the important games :)
What I want to play the most is Castlevania SOTN! ☺
Thanks, hopefully I can make some good progress on it in 2023
especially with the new touch he might program into the game, I mean 2 players? how crazy is that!! plus the new suits are quite tastefully done
Glad to hear it's working well on the Analogue Pocket. Thanks, I missed Coloco DX. It's looking very promising
Boy. The future sega Genesis video game titles are going radical, this year. Happy new year indeed! Let’s go!
Simply in awe !
Alot of fun
Give it a go, it's not as hard as you think!
oh wow, Ancient is back!? holy moly, that's absolutely incredible news, i bet they are going to set a new standard for Homebrew games.
The cursed knight has been forgotten last year and the cursed legacy almost forgotten this year.
Maybe this is the curse :O
Thank you for the highlight :)
You're welcome (glad I didn't forget this year!). Good luck with the game!
@@PigsysRetroGameDevTutorials thanks and good luck with yours !
I wish someone would make new 32x games. It gets so much hate, but it had potential, and really improved the color palette of the Genesis.
It would be cool, but it is tricky to make effective use of, and limits the audience, so I don't think we'll ever see too many 32x games.
@@Ehal256 Google Neptune modded Genesis.
@@Ehal256 As for your second point, it's not trickier. An SDK was developed for the Genesis, but it's not impossible to develop one for the 32x. If anyone ever develops one, it would facilitate 32x development.
Ty for whatever your doing this is how we will take gaming back
Cad & Dino won’t have further updates, it’s the final version and was only shown because the developer abandoned the project
The immortal Sega Genesis\Mega Drive
In Ghostbusters I thought Winston wasn't included was because it was in the movie between when they started and just before they hired him.
Mega Final Fight
Cadiliac & Dinosaurs
Ninja Baseball Batman
Real Bout Fatal Fury
R Type
Darkstalkers
Metroid
The Simpsons Arcade
I hope the Genesis gets more attention with more Castlevania & Mega Man titles
Can't wait to play the best Simpsons videogame on my Nomad! Kudos to the devs
8:11 Is this a cover of a song from dead cells?
Thank you
When is TBC by Erik Haliewiks coming out?
I think TBC means to be confirmed here. I'm not sure when it'll be finished :)
@@Ehal256 lol i was wondering what it stood for
@@jc_dogen haha! He still needs to add shooting and enemy AI in. Hopefully we'll see some progress on that in 2023
@@PigsysRetroGameDevTutorials expect progress when I get back from vacation (^:
Good stuff
...and the video
A cow from heaven
... awesome
Bacana! Parabéns Yuri !!
Hopefully a third of these PROJECTS actually completes its development by the end of the year 🙏
Having The Simpsons Arcade for the Mega/Gen would fulfill a lot of our childhood dreams even 30 or so years later lol That game alone was the reason we even went to Chuck E Cheese etc.
I downloaded demons asteborg on switch but how do I save as every time I die I've to start from the beginning
Pigsy: "I'm just a beginner"
Also Pigsy: Makes one of the single best looking 16-bit era games on original hardware ever made then or now.
ChibiAkumas is awesome.
the content we need. thank you
Has anyone tried any 32X game development?
It would be nice to see Capcom's Aliens vs Predator for it.
It was considered releasing this game for the platform, but probably was canceled when the 32X's sales disappointed.
The question I have is, is this part of emulation/released for all hardware? I know that might be a stupid question but am genuinely curious how the games release.
Hey Pigsy, not to bother you or anything but will you ever make a tutorial on how to save data on the Genesis/MD using SGDK? I haven't been able to find any resources on it.
GG Shinobi Will make you a legend among Sega fans… keep going
