  • Tennessee Ernie Ford sings the classic folk song, "Shenandoah" on The Ford Show, March, 9, 1961.
Many artists have covered the song, but Tennessee Ernie Ford released the most notable and popular version on his 1959 album, "Shenandoah". This live version from The Ford Show is heartfelt and inspiring.
This live recording appeared prominently in the popular video game "Fallout 76." The game also included the Ford's renditions of the miner's anthem "Dark as a Dungeon" and "Sixteen Tons." All three songs play on the game's Appalachia Radio
Ford's original recording also appeared prominently on "American Dad," Season 11, Episode 10, "The Two Hundred."
    About Tennessee Ernie Ford
Born Ernest Jennings Ford on February 13th, 1919 in Bristol, Tennessee, Tennessee Ernie Ford has made an indelible impact on America and the world through his unparalleled accomplishments in radio, records and television.
Throughout his legendary career spanning over 50 years, Ernie Ford's early successes as a radio personality led to his signing with Capitol Records in 1949. Through 1976, he released a total of eighty-three albums on the label--and literally scores of single records, including his classic version of Merle Travis' timeless anthem to the working man, "Sixteen Tons"...at the time of its release, the fastest selling single in Capitol's history.
    About The Ford Show
On Thursday night, October 4th, 1956, NBC premiered The Ford Show Starring Tennessee Ernie Ford.
As prime-time's # 1 half-hour variety show for five years, The Ford Show featured all the ingredients of the top variety shows of the day; Hollywood's greatest guest stars, top-of-the-line production, and terrific music. But one simple element separated it from all others...Ernie closed virtually every show with a hymn, a spiritual or a song of faith. For the time, it was a bold and powerful statement for a popular entertainer of Ford's stature to be making on live television, especially in the face of the initial objections from Madison Avenue and the network. But it was a statement that would become the trademark of his career, and in many ways, the mark of his life. It would earn him the distinction of almost single-handedly bringing inspirational music into the mainstream of American entertainment...an enduring legacy of the lasting impact that one man's expression of faith can have on millions of people.

The song originally is about a mountain man who falls in love with a Native American princess. Shenandoah is the name of her father the tribal leader. The mountain asks the princess to meet him on the bank of a river to run away together. Instead Shenandoah moves his entire tribe. The song is the mountain man calling to Shenandoah to please come back. The song evolved into a sailing song......."the topsails shiver"....it relates to every sailor who feels the loneliness and leaving at sea.

Finally someone who know the story of "The Wide Missouri"and correctly has Shenando as an Indian chief and not river in Virginia.

      @libbyclark1360 4 ปีที่แล้ว +35

Thank you, George, you are very correct. Shenando is an Indian Chief and not a river. The river is "The Wide Missouri," The piano music of 50 years ago has a bass sound that reminds me of the roll of a river. Yes, I know the sound, I grew up on the banks of the Mississippi River and lived for 6 years on the banks of the Missouri. If you don't believe the Missouri can be wide, ask some of the Farmers who were flooded by it this year when the River flooded and found its own path, the one before man tried to control it.

Well, yes and no. I certainly agree that Ernie Ford was an impressive singer. I enjoyed all of his artistry. But there were many impressive singers in that era. Some, like Ford, had their own TV shows. Some stuck to singing for records. We were lucky to have had them. We’re also lucky to have their recordings available to us today.

My wife loved this song. She died of Breast Cancer in 2019. It's very sad and I can hardly hold back the tears when I listen to it. The song reminds me of the Civil War; I could picture some soldiers singing this around a campfire.

If you never watched the movie "Shenandoah" with Jimmy Stewart you may enjoy it as the theme is played throughout the the movie which takes place during the Civil War. It's not so sad if you look at all sides, and what the tune represents. Am sure your wife saw much beauty in this tune, musical or with lyrics.

I will not tell you that the pain gets better but I will tell you that you will get used to it.

I guess anyone who grew up by a river can identify with this. I did. My river was my playground for many many years. A Tom Sawyer and a Huck Finn I was and never wanted to grow up and probably never have. I still go back and look at those places from more than a half a century ago and still feel I'm there again. Hey... This is a beautiful song and is sung magnificently. Pardon me reminiscing to begin with. But isn't that one of the most wonderful qualities of great music and of beautiful song? That it can take you back and put joy in your heart and it can do it over an entire lifetime.

Jennie Lind was a famous Swedish opera singer with a legendary voice during the 19th century. Sadly, sound recording was unavailable at the time, so no one can hear her today. Well into the 20th century, there were people who had heard her, and they swore that none could sound like her. She undertook an extraordinarily popular concert tour of the USA in 1850.

The Real Deal, Ernest Jennings Ford was an American Original, whose likes we might never see again. Possessed of a phenomenal bass-baritone voice, he became an American icon with the release of his famous "Sixteen Tons" in 1955, which I played on the juke box as a young sailor. In the year 1965 Ii had the pleasure of seeing the live telecasts of his daily San Francisco production on local television station KGO-TV. In one particularly delightful presentation, he performed several arias with his old voice teacher from the Cincinnati Conservatory of Opera, and ---- MYGOD! ---- what a powerful voice this man projected! He will never be replaced, either on the music scene or in the hearts of those who were privileged to hear him sing.

There are a number of songs that no matter how talented you are, you will not covey the message and delivery that the song deserves unless you truly feel the lyrics. You may be the best singer in the world, but you will never capture the emotion of a song. You may hit every note perfectly, but someone singing a song such as this imperfectly will put anyone to shame that is pitch perfect if they feel the words and emotions that the song conveys. Very few songs such as this nowadays that can be applicable.

Love Paul Robeson. One of the greatest figures of the twentieth century. And a phenomenal singer. But a question! Isn't THIS performances by Tennessee Ernie Ford one of the greatest bass vocals you have ever heard? This performance is thrilling to me. Why then is Ford not recognized as a great talent also? Cause he was a Country Music star, and an entertainer? Because he did comedy? I think this performance needs to be recognized and that Ford is a greatly underappreciated singer! Love this!!

People who appreciated outstanding voices knew how good Ford's serious singing voice was. That's why opera divas such as Lily Pons and Marilyn Horne were more than pleased to sing with him. By the way, as good as this is, I think Ford's rendition of Wayfaring Stranger on You-tube is even more impressive.

The Shanandoah and the song have spell bound this northerner and world traveler for decades. To me this is the most heartfelt and soulful of any rendition

I grew up with the Shenandoah family's on the Onondaga Tribal Nation. I remember singing this in grade school music class. Many of that family still alive today.

I wish we had truly great singers today like Tennessee Ernie Ford, singing songs so beautifully done as he, as well others great singers that have passed on.

+franglen1 I think there may well be some good ones out there, but they're drowned out by the pop idol sh*t that swamps the airwaves. more likely to find a good artist playing at the local bar or hall.

I think you are right about that. My Dad had many 8 track tapes and some would play at a higher pitch than others.

Today I played a bit of Fallout 76 for the first time in maybe a year and the song came on the in-game radio while I was going through a field of dead grass... Me and my girlfriend used to play the game together, we broke up about half a year ago, never thought a game would make me tear up... 😥
