I'm not sure that any game could deliver the fun of 13th century Germany.
Yes, of the three centuries that the Hanseatic League existed, the 13th was definitely the most fun. Even the Second Danish-Hansiatic war of 1361 to 1370 was a laugh riot. I mean who wouldn't relish sacking Copenhagen and Helsingborg and then getting a virtual monopoly on Scandanavian trade for the next 60 years!

2021 Quinns: Catches a box before it falls with the deadly precision of a mantis and carries on like a fucking pro.
I loved that. Smoooooth...
Those ending minutes will just be a documentation of Quinn's slow descent into madness over the next couple years

This review sold me on this game, and I'm so grateful for it. Hansa is now one of my all-time favorite titles. Quinns doesn't even mention the dinner plate action tokens, which add a whole extra layer to it. I used to disregard them until I saw that it could be a winning strategy to run around collecting those.

RIGHT?! I'm a very visual person and this game is almost everything I dislike about games: it's bland, brown, busy, based on historic events, the box art is boring (though well done), and uses basic cubes. +1 point for the awesome desk player boards, I actually like those. But this review was so good I added this to my wish list!
Dear Mr Quins and team (and “camera assistant”- journalists and games professional in her own right) please please please stop.... I really can’t afford to expand my collection .... however this looks like it might be able to miss a couple of weeks of food and bills to pay for this one .... keep up the good work love it and am starting to get into the podcast 🤘🏿

Props to you for shining a spotlight on this gem. I feel like So Very Wrong About Games made a massive service to the boardgaming community by championing Hansa Teutonica enough that it got traction with the wider scene of prominent reviewers, now including SUSD. I've played this game with at least 20 people in different settings by now, and so far I've not met a single person who disliked the experience.
Been listing to So Very Wrong About Games for years now. It’s nice to see them gaining traction and appreciated by others. I also first heard about Hansa Teutonica from them and and it fell flat the first time my group played it. After being confused about the mediocre reception, I watched some play through videos and realized we got some rules wrong and I’m now eager to get it back to the table.
This looks like ticket to ride's older nastier brother.
That would be Thurn und Taxis. This game is their stern governess.

Aw shit, this is an instant-want. As a designer myself, I love when one piece works in 20 different ways. when there's ONE resource, not 10. I love how simple and small the boards are. And it's a shorter game? Amazing.
I really would like a space themed version of this.

Player interaction is key, often a spot that is poorly represented in Euro's. Happy to give this one a go.
This game has so much conflict in it, I find it hard to call a euro. This is a wargame set in Eurogame theme with euro mechanics.

As soon as he started talking about playing a nice soothing game at the end, I physically felt the tension rise. Hilarious! Great review too, looks like a cracking game. :) I'm on a self-imposed board game ban until I actually play the ones I already own, but I'll add this to my watchlist for sure.
"Quedlinburg is REAL?" at 7:39 was my reaction too when I saw it on the board at 4:36. Of course, we all know that is not true and it is merely that Quacks and Hansa are set in the same continuity, the cardboardverse.
I introduced this to a game group I don't get to play with much. After playing everyone wanted to play again, so we did. The next time we came we played it again, and then again. I haven't been there since, but they got their own copy and I imagine it hits the table all the time. Fantastic game, would recommend.
The way he caught that box lid and kept continuing with only a barely imperceptible change in the rythmn of his speech... Inspiring. I can only hope that one day I'll be as skilled and experienced in both fumbling with cardboard and talking to a camera.
(Not actually sarcastic I recently got a broadcasting degree and I am not NEARLY that unflappable.)

glad you mention the price. it's simply redicolous how publishers are pumping up the prices and sell people fancy components instead of superb gameplay
So so pleased you’ve covered this, triply so that you love it as much as I do! When I was first introduced to it a friend described it as “quintessentially euro” which I think is apt and also a huge complement. It’s everything I love about euro’s, how the game is in the rich interaction of the players within the rules; chock full of interesting decisions, and crammed into an unbelievably concise play-time.
I think this is the most i've ever laughed in ANY youtube video ever. What a treat.

I'm glad Leigh is a good sport when helping out with the videos. Every time she's in one it's always hilarious! I can't think not-laugh when I think about the "dolly zoom" video where she was pulling Quinns chair.
Also, that ending had me laughing so. hard. 1000 Internet points to Quinns!

The ending to this video was one of my favorites! I must say because of Shut Up and Sit Down my board collection has grown significantly! I am going to grab a copy of this game to try it out.

Thank you so much Quinns, this is flat out the best board game review I have ever watched. I was initially scared to try this rules ogre of a Euro game, but the reward of the interactive experience is so worth it. You are correct when you said that at the end of the game all you are thinking about is how do I do it better next time. If you are lucky enough to have like minded gaming friends this game will keep giving highly entertaining experiences long into the future. Your review gave me the courage to try it out and for that I am very grateful.
Quinns reviews just keeps on getting better, how is it possible? From "my City's" best intro EVER to this weeks best outro in a long time (closely tied with the ones where he "reboxes" himself at the end). My hat is off to you Quinns! Great work!

This is maybe my all-time favorite game and I'm extremely glad to see this glowing praise from one of my favorite reviewers.
Played this yesterday and the "playthrough" at the end is accurate. A mixture of alphaing and hate playing and arguing over rules. My worst board game experience ever next to a 5 hour 6 player game of Catan which was horrible.
Can't wait to play it again.
Brilliant and very entertaining. Reading the rules made me feel intimidated, watching this alleviates that.. whew .. now I’m looking forward to my first play. Thanks!

I can confirm those last moments. Someone broke this out at our LGS awhile back and after we overcame the initial shock of the teach we had a pretty good time. However there was a lot of frustration and knowing what you're doing in this game gives you an incredible edge. The person who brought it wiped the floor with us.
That's how any good euro game should be. For me, taking a clear loss against an experienced player at a game is exactly the recipe to make me say, "okay, let's do it again".
I was already laughing at Quinns’ awkward smile after “white privilege”, but the entire floor of my building must have heard me after the “joke”s = ridiculous SFX. Pls more of that.

Great overview. Love this game. One thing though. Quinns is a bit wrong about "all those turns being wasted" when you are blocked. This is where you use the book and simply move all those cubes to a new route. You can even instantly complete a route if moving 3 cubes (as most routes are 3 spaces long).

Taught my group the game last night after watching your entertaining vid! Can we talk more about that epic backdrop that looks like you're investigating a serial murder case?! haha, the Tension-Time and Fun-Time line charts are so hilar. This video worth many rewatches. I wish the actual instruction booklet explained end-game scoring better- I couldn't find the extra points described for connecting the Red cities, and the extra end-game points for controlling cities.
Another great review guys. You continually manage to present games that I have zero interest in and make them interesting to the point of putting them on my wishlist. You guys could sell snow to an Eskimo. Kudos. 😃
I can't believe you've reviewed two amazing games I am absolutely planning to buy in two consecutive weeks! I cracked and got Modern Art last week, telling myself I don't trust CMON to reprint it quickly when it sells out, but what am I going to do now?
Nice, I just introduced this game to my friend last week. Thought I was going to lose but squeaked out a victory last second by rushing an end of the game through VP and upgrades. Really enjoyable game that is great with 3 or 5 players. Super tight but also rewards being "picked on" as well, which is neat because most Euros don't have that type of interaction.
one of my all-time favorite games! If I didn't already own the original, I would 100% pick up the "Big Box" version! I'm actually in the process of making homemade player boards with the good ol recessed cube/disc pockets.

Great review of a great game. BTW the extra boards and kings charter tiles have been around for quiet some time and the publisher has brought them together in one box. I’ve played the game quiet a bit and every time I’ve introduced it to new players it gets played a second time straight away as the players are often really surprised when the game suddenly finishes. Superb game and highly recommended 👍🏻

I'm so pleased to see this game getting more attention with the new Big Box. This has been one of my favorite games for years, even as i've moved on to economic games and wargames as my primary gaming genres
Interesting that the original BGG entry says 2-5 players but the big box entry says 3-5 players. Does this game work with two players? Unfortunately, my games have to work at two players as well.
@@zerohero1979 There have been two different versions of 2p rules in two different printings, and neither were good. It was a wise choice on Pegasus Spiele's part to simply drop the 2p mode and advertise it as a 3p-5p game only

I include a few sheets of paper in my box of HT with boxes to help separate the two pools of cubes to keep track of what you can put on the map and when you need to use bags.
