Hey everyone, I shot through IIIA body armor with the SS197SR ammo in our video "FN 57 (FiveSeven) review" Please watch it before claiming that the FiveSeven won't penetrate body armor. Do you really think I would say that if I hadn't tested it myself?
Another great and educational video Mr. Harrell, thank you for this. If only the ammo for the 57 was a bit cheaper I think it would make a great friendly competition gun. My buds and I shoot against each other for friendly competition and it's just much more cost effective to use my custom Glock 19. Thank you again for all the videos
I'm 4 years late to this party, but I just bought the 5.7. One of the features of this pistol that you didn't mention was the very light recoil. Making it a much more controllable firearm than say your .357 or .45, which greatly increases accuracy for double or more taps. I was very impressed with it at the range, and so was my partner. She said that it was a much more comfortable pistol to shoot than the Ruger P-89 that she uses. This video just answered any concerns about using it for my every day carry sidearm. Thank you Paul!
That's awesome that you got one. I'd been wanting one for years and finally caved a few months ago and picked up a Ruger 57, and I absolutely love the thing. It's so pleasant to shoot and I swear, you almost have to try to miss a target. I handload for everything I shoot, now including 5.7x28, and I verified safety and function of 40gr V-Max projectiles up to 2,040fps out of my Ruger. Paul mentioned in this video that the ammunition he used (40gr V-Max) was pretty much loaded towards the top end of the cartridge's capability at 1700fps. He didn't know at the time, FN's actually quite a bit conservative on their factory ammo. 40gr @ 1701fps = 257ft/lbs; 40gr @ 2040 = 370ft/lbs - *substantial difference* I ultimately settled on a powder charge which gives me an average of 1950fps, and tested it in 20% clear ballistics gel with excellent results. I have several other projectiles to try out as well and can't wait to see how they do... Hornady 35gr NTX, Berger 40gr FBV, Cutting Edge 32gr MTH, Cutting Edge 30gr Raptor, Lehigh 32gr CC Frac HPBT, and Barnes 36gr VG. Apologies for the unsolicited info, lol. It's always fun to talk about 5.7x28.
I agree with your assessment about recoil. Having partial paralysis in both hands, although I can shoot .45, .357, & 9mm, this round is the one for me. I bought a PSA Rock 5.7 pistol from Palmetto State Armory & and I can't believe how much easier and accurate it is for me to shoot. One size does not fit all!🙂
I work part time at a gun store, your videos are a great help in educating many customers. Both the “Operators” and “ the my buddy that knows all about guns and he said guy”. It’s hard to argue with your logical and empirical demonstrations. Thanks for the help and continuing education.
What people don't understand about high velocity small rounds is how they work, what they are doing is using a physics principle called supercavitation when the bullet hits the target at high speed there's a vacuum bubble behind the projectile that is ripping up your insides and as the projectile slows that bubble expands until it dissipates so you get the neat little holes in the ribs, and then as it slows the wound channel enlarges. The Five Seven is designed for liquid targets like the human body where it can take full advantage of supercavitation, unfortunately most people will look at the cinderblock test and say it underperforms without taking into account that test favors rounds with more mass.
Yes, you are correct. For close personal protection after a lot of tests we opted for 40g Vmax round out of 7.5" barrel in .223. The 40g provides effective lethality on soft targets, with minimal risk of collateral damage. Hornady TAP barrier 55g for barrier issues. it didn't make sense to go with the 5.7 applications pistol/carbine due to the platforms available as well as not having the flexibility to go with heavier barrier rounds if needed.I wish Paul would have done water jug tests in slow motion. You can really see the hydrostatic cavitation of the higher velocity rounds as opposed to something like a .45acp
Simply put, any 5.7 round under 1900 fps is under performing for the caliber which is capable of 2200+ fps. The best 5.7 rounds on the market market are at least 2000 fps.
IMO, Ruger is perhaps the most innovative gun manufacturer while producing their products at a reasonable price. While Rugers might not be THE best of any type, when you have a budget, Rugers are hard to beat.
@@ukyo2010 The Ruger 57 isn't really innovative though if FN has had a 5.7 for 30 years. The Ruger is cool and affordable but i would not say innovative in this scenario.
I personally love the fn5.7 because it is the most comfortable hand gun I have ever held and I shot it better than any other handgun so it seems very practical for me
Expensive gun, expensive ammo, niche weapon, don't need it, doesn't replace or do anything better than ANY of my many other handguns....... *YEP, I BOUGHT ONE ANY DAMN WAY .... AND THE 30RD EXTENDED MAG TO BOOT!!!*
Erick Garcia green tip? I’ve seen (and bought and shot) BLUE tip, hollow point and FMJ....but I’ve never seen green tips. Gonna have to look for those!
Hopefully, the new Remington will be higher quality, but some recent things like V3, verse max, and R1 are pretty good IMO. Also, newer Marlins appear to be good.
Excellent video! One more thing I would add is that as a “specialized” round, 5.7X28 with 28gr bullet is incredibly fast, almost twice as fast as regular 9mm Luger, and that quality also is very useful in particular scenarios, like shooting at very fast moving objects at the angle. And, on top of everything, the Five Seven pistol’s uniquely designed feeding system is incredibly robust and fail proof.
I'm sure he's covered it before, but for anyone who doesn't know, the FN 5.7x28 cartridge was designed for exactly 2 guns: the five-seven and the P90, a select-fire, very light "assault rifle". The set were designed almost exclusively with military use in mind as sidearms for non combat-arms personnel. The main requirements were long range accuracy, light body armor penetration, interchangeable ammunition between the pistol an rifle, and light weight in general for personnel who would likely never be in combat. Also, double checking the number crunching: 5-7: 348J 45: 433J So yeah, the math was right despite my doing it in metric.

Great info and great video. As far at the 50 yard shots, I remember qualifying with 38 special ammo at 50 yards, it will work. I once won a bet shooting an 18 inch plate at 100 yards with my 1911 chambered in 45 ACP, hitting the plate 5 times with 7 shots. The guy who lost the bet said he didn't think a 45 ACP would travel that far, yes, it will. Guns will often shoot better than the person holding them. Again, great video, thanks.
I shocked the hell out of some people on the range by setting my 4" steel plate at 100 yards....then whipping out a .45 1911. ~5/8 hit, supported on a makeshift sandbag/rest. Of course id be 30/30 with my AR, but the pistol was just fun and it brought a smile. That very noticeable lag between shot and target feedback.
Not as awesome a gun as I had thought. BUT, as you noted it definitely has its advantages in certain applications. By all means a niche' gun. Thanks for that review.
i dunno, i like wheel guns, but it seems like you'll never run out of follow-up shots when target shooting. wonder how good/bad recoil is on that thing. since it's flat shooting, it would make for a great target pistol.
That...And the fact that Paul has "been there and done that". He is one of the most honest and unbiased reviewers on youtube-He ain't tryin to sell you anything, just tryin to inform.
I hope the Ruger 57 helps make 5.7x28 more common and less expensive. I also hope it helps bring similar ammo like 22TCM more interest. I didn't even know that caliber existed until I saw Paul's video on it but it seems like it could definitely have its uses, especially since it can share duty with 9mm in the same gun with only a barrel swap.
After LC9, PC Carbine and LCP II .22Lr this is another Ruger marketing dept. lumbersexuals' fail, IMHO. To make it clear: I am not a Ruger hater by any meaning and I like my 10/22 Takedown a lot. Moreover, from what I see, I really like the design of R57 itself. What I don’t get is the choice of caliber. Should Ruger make it in 7.62x25 Tokarev, I would traded all of my pistols just for a couple of those. Just compare 1600 fps of 40-gr 5.7x28 to 1600 fps of 85-gr 7.62x25 Tokarev and you will get my point. Too bad that Ruger failed again to deliver an innovative practical pistol, that can be appreciated by majority of US gunners, not only by wealthy hipsters or misinformed newbies who will be unsuccessfully trying to trade their "safe queens" R57 for G19 by the end of this year. In the videos below, both official Ruger representatives say “great for home defense” while in fact it is very poor choice for home/self defense. th-cam.com/video/l-Nyal0r36Q/w-d-xo.html&feature=emb_logo th-cam.com/video/g-qoLGCbj1E/w-d-xo.html&feature=emb_logo Let’s settle this once and for all, forget any and all bias reviews, advertisments, paid endorsements, and the ballistic gel tests where the 5.7 got it's butt kicked. Just look at the math. Since the .40, 10mm, 357 mag, and 45 are vastly more powerful lets just compare the 5.7 to the century old 9mm. Here are the stats on both of their hottest loads in pistol barrels. 4" for the 9mm and I'll even give the 5.7 the advantage of it's factory 4.8" barrel. Bullets for comparison are the top of the line S4M and the Buffalo Bore 115gr. Even though the guys in the five and seven forums say they are not getting the advertised 2600 fps we will give them the full benifit of the doubt and assume the advertising is accurate despite the fact that people have recorded 2400-2500fps in their crono. ------------------------5.7mm S4M----------9mm 115gr Energy----------------405ft/lbs------------500 ft/lbs-----Advantage 9mm Momentum----------10lbs--------------------23lbs-------Huge Advantage 9mm Frontal Area-.-------.0394-------------------.1007-------Huge Advantage 9mm Sectional Density---.08----------------------.130--------Large Advantage 9mm Now forget the ultra high performance hard to find ammo and lets focus on the stuff you can buy over the counter at any halfway respectable local gun shop. -------------------------SS195LF--------Carbon 115gr JHP Energy-----------------255ft/lbs---------466ft/lbs----Large Advantage 9mm Momentum----------- 7lbs---------------22lbs--------Huge advangage 9mm Frontal Area---------.0394--------------.1007--------Huge advantage 9mm Sectional density----.08----------------.130---------Large advantage 9mm By every measurement we know of the 9mm is superior to the soft tissue performance of the 5.7x28, I have asked on many occasions for the 5.7 junkies to explain to me what magic energy somehow makes it more deadly and nobody can explain it to me, I wounder why. Even the most hardcore 5.7 fan should understand why I am so skeptical of it's "advantages" over conventional handgun rounds. If you do the same comparison with the 40, 10mm, 357 Sig or any other modern handgun round the comparison get REAL bad for the 5.7x28. Once again, regarding all talks about Fort Hood shooting’s victims being killed with single 5.7x28 projectile. www.foxnews.com/us/soldier-who-charged-at-ft-hood-gunman-was-shot-12-times-before-dying So many these days base their beliefs on nothing but feelings. With all recent drive-by shootings, home invasions, etc., I value more and more the projectile's ability to penetrate at least 14" of a body tissue; or a glass, a car door, etc. - without significant loss of Ek = 1/2 mv2. So, unless it is $5 ea. of SS190 armor piercing rounds, otherwise commercial 5.7x28 ammo does not meet that criteria and even .22WMR from pistol barrel outperforms it. www.quotemaster.org/Ammo#&gid=1&pid=6 Therefore, without SS190, 5.7x28 is out of its element. 5.7x28 was designed to be a low-power, low-recoil round with penetration capabilities for body armor, a combination that can only work with penetrator rounds to punch those holes. Otherwise, it's mostly about novelty and perhaps wishing civilians could somehow get the good stuff and Ruger clearly exploits this.
I am a Brit and I love these vids. Best gun vids on TH-cam. Don't loose you gun rights guys or the only guns you will get to handle are BB guns. God bless American. At least someone one is free.
Well in the UK they want to ban knives now for the same reasons they want to ban guns in America. Removing a tool will only force people to use another tool in it's place. But instead of the mindset of providing legal citizens with defense options. Some government heads would prefer to provide all the defense choices to those who do commit crime, all in the name of safety. Because what to do they care they will find a way to get it. If you cannot defend yourself, you are or will be a victim. It's really that simple. Sadly governments think people should be defenseless in order to remain legal. Good thing criminals who murder, rape, and rob also follow the rules of legality...
@@geronimo5537 The only one reason i think is, that the people dont have the ability to stand up against the government if it would be needed. That the Government would have all the power and not the people.
We can’t let people be confused by the false arguments claiming that more gun control laws will make us and our children safer. How many mass shootings have there been in police stations or gun ranges? How many have there been at “gun free zones”? Their real goal is absolute control over the populations that they govern. Tyrants prefer a toothless society lest they end up on the wrong end of a firing squad. Thank God for Boris Johnson!! I will pray for England 🏴 as I pray for our United States 🇺🇸.
To me FN 5.7×28 is a modern take on 7.62×25 Tokarev. I don't quite see a lot of point in comparing 5.7×28 to .45 ACP but great informative presentation nevertheless :). Of course 5.7×28 is a compromise to give the shooter high capacity in a light and relatively compact package. Remember, P90 can have 50 rounds capacity and the whole package is still very concealable. I don't get this whole 1 shot stoppage concept. I'd rather have option for a lot of quick and accurate fallowing shots than to rely on one shot solving the problem.
Tomasz Zajac some would say that it is better for one shot to be effective enough, than to need to shoot again. Sometimes half a second is the only thing between a knife and your stomach. I still think an FN5.7 would work- I just might not use it as my every day carry.
This is always in my head. I wish I was a better shot, with a pistol, at defensible range, under stress, in order to always hit my target with 10+1. But frankly I'm not, so I'll happily sacrifice the 62 ft.lbs for 10 extra chances.
A 5.57 round is good against meat shots as its designed damage organs as it slows by supercavitation. But using it as a head shot round may less successful because of the density of bone in the skull. Any ideas?
Consider the amount of time you have to take your shots. Just because you have more rounds in the mag doesn’t mean you have more time, so when hitting once with a bullet you want this bullet to deal as much damage as possible
"fair warning this is the boring part of the video" nah dude, there is no boring part of any of your videos. statistics + functional real word application + commentary = a great all round video!
Paul, as always I love watching your productions. In my opinion you set yourself aside from the rest of us with how thoroughly you cover everything. It’s rare to find efficient shooting, great coverage and articulate information coming from an actual expert... (versus what we normally get from the other 100,000 Navy Seals our there.) So I want to say thank you! The CCC big time approves!
This was, by far, the most professional...easy to understand...informative...enlightening...and empowering video I've seen made on ANY handgun in the past year! Thank you!
The 27 grain Hollowpoint LF is a very effective round for self defense. If Paul read the report about the Ft. Hood shooting. He would learn on how effective the platform can be. The 5.7 x 28 has earned a solid reputation throughout the world in many shootings. For many who think this is a niche handgun. Nothing wrong with it's lightweight and good firepower.
Keep up the great presentations Paul from 1 VET to another. I love the real world demonstrations and how you speak in laymen's terms. I have relations that are clueless about guns, you put in such a way they can even understand the content. You are 1 of the best in this format.
I love these videos thanks so much for the constant quality. I don't know the local laws of your area and thus if this would even be possible but given your proficiency with hand guns I for one would seriously enjoy a presentation on hand guns with stocks and how they compare to hand gun caliber carbines. once again many thanks and such appreciation from way down here in NZ.
That is a great idea. Unfortunately it violates my local laws to put a stock on a pistol (although sometimes you get away with "arm braces") I may be able to do it with muzzle loading guns. They are often exempt from such rules.
For a noob like me this is an excellent demonstration of the principles and concepts behind caliber choice and design. Thank you for shedding light on the competitive arena of handgun manufacturers and enthusiasts.
This review came at the right time. I was at the gun shop yesterday, looking for a handgun to shoot my 22 WMR ammo (I have about a thousand rounds), when the salesman asked if I had tried the FN 5.7. Sadly, I had not and I told him I was not familiar with that weapon. Now, I may be going back and looking at that FN ! Thank you, Paul!
I have and have carried a FN 57X28. I like the pistol and ammo. Just wish that there was a wider range of ammo. Again Paul is fair in all his videos. And I want to think him for his professionalism.
Due to the low recoil, high capacity, flat shooting aspects of the 5.7 you can get a lot of rounds on target, easily and quickly. On the other hand the damage done is not what larger calibers would do. Is that a bad thing, yes and no. Looking at real world we see that that creep that shot up the army base in TX used a 5.7 and killed 13 and wounded over 30. He himself was shot at least four times but unfortunately survived. So here we have an interesting case. The creep, whose name I will not name, may he rot forever, was shot at least four times by what I would assume to be standard issue military ammo which would be 9mm. Creepo fired the majority of the 214 rounds fired in the incident. How many hit people I cannot find but but it half did then we are looking at about 100 rounds hitting target caused 13 deaths and 30 wounded which is 40% casualty rate. That is not much different than larger calibers. So if we look at the 5.7 from an effectiveness standpoint it seems to hold up well against other calibers and as Paul mentioned in certain niche areas is superior. Would I prefer a 5.7 over a 9 or 45? Jury is out. I'd like to have a 5.7 but I'm unconvinced that there is any advantage of it vs other hand guns and vise versa (at least when not in those niche areas).
That 40gr vmax seems to be an excellent varmint round. And I can say I wouldn't want to be shot with any of them. I don't fit into the niche for that firearm or caliber (unless I can also have the full auto P90). But I'm also not the type to say what someone needs, doesn't need, or should or should not have. Great presentation.
Well, that is exactly what the VMax is, the only difference between the ones loaded in 5.7x28mm and the ones available for reloaders (or in VMax loaded .223/5.56) is the blue polymer tip, which Hornady makes exclusively for FN.
Varmint?? all the soldiers killed in the FT.Hood killing in 2008 was killed with the blue tip 5.7 all shot center mass, and 3 of the soldiers tried to charge the kook and the 5.7 stopped them in their tracks.
I don't know what is more insulting in your comment. That you dismiss the VMax as being designed for varmint shooting (it's literally how hornady markets them www.hornady.com/bullets/v-max#!/ ), or the equivocation you make in bringing up the Ft. Hood shooting (which happened in 2009 btw, I remember that because I went there for mobilization training Feb 2010 and their metal detectors were cranked up so much that the foil my chewing gum was wrapped in was setting them off).
This touches on his vids about carrying, cabine and pistol in same caliber. I can tell you I'd much rather carry a 5.7 and p90 than 45-70 pistol. Especially since i have small hands and the big caliber pistols i have trouble getting proper grip on. Even my 40 cal double stack is almost too wide for my grip.
Thanks Paul. You are by far the most scientific firearm analyst that presents on youtube. The scientific objectivity presented by you, especially in your multi-situational analysis, is unmatched. It's phenomenal for a firearms novice that you examine effectiveness in multiple ways and especially for multiple situations and circumstances while most other firearms examiners on youtube presume a CERTAIN situation when analyzing the effectiveness of a firearm or type of ammo. I think you should start a firearms training school or the military should hire you for choosing effective firearms. I certainly thought from what I've previously read that the FN FiveseveN- and particularly it's ammo- was above and beyond other firearms, but due to your analysis I now understand that it doesn't warrant top marks for every circumstance. Thanks again, keep it up.

I'd love to have the 5.7×28 mm. I think it would serve as a backpackers or a bicyclist gun very well. Its lightweight and holds many rounds and the extra mags are light and would make it so u dont have to carry the '' box " of ammo just the loaded mags. Ore room and less weight. Sounds like a winner to me. I'm thinking of getting one soon.

So, after watching most of Pual's videos, I've learned a few things: 1) there is no caliber of any weapon, I ever want going through my leather skin, or watermelon lungs, and I don't even have an old, or new and improved fleece bullet stop behind me ever. 2) I can take reasonable cover from old West guns, in a proper cabin. 3) I still don't have a car, nearly as cool as Paul's! 45 will blow out a blood supply, or a pumper, just like a 57, but the 57 verses 45 can be answered via M14 verses M16 argument, but none of them, are nearly as cool as an old T-bird or GTO!
I'm sure it's a good round for self defense but there are FAR better rounds out there and I'd much prefer something with more mass to it like, 357 sig, 7.62x25, 9x25, or anything larger than 5.7x28 but with a solid steel round.
I shot a couple coyotes with an ar57, they mostly bit at the spot they got hit as if stung by a bee or they just ran off as if never hit.... Its a shit round.
@@gooddoggo2258 mostly lung shots, dont get me wrong they did die.... Exactly Paul, once again you get to the meat of the matter. :) Would I carry a FiveSeven as a personal carry gun? No. Would I, If I was soldiering in a standing army and actually got to select my pistol? Hell yea. Don't dismiss a firearm just because you don't understand its use case.
Another great video Paul, sorry for delay in watching and giving this one a thumbs-up. I REALLY appreciate your calm, matter of a fact style and the Shatner-esk pauses as you describe them, really hardly noticeable.
@Fractured Hearts .22 WMR is a nice round, but I would not bet my life relying on a rimfire round with fragile case thickness. That's a couple of things that gives the 5.7x28mm an edge over the .22 WMR, reliable ignition and a strong cartridge case. Performance wise of the bullets, 5.7 might have a slight advantage, but not particularly much, especially if comparing 40gr .22 WMR to 40gr 5.7x28mm.
I've owned a Ruger Single-Six .22 revolver for nearly 50 years. I've put thousands of rounds through it, both target and hunting varmints. I actually cannot recall a single misfire .22 wmr. Nor have I ever seen a casing split. One advantage of the rim fire is that you don't reuse them. My reloading firends have had occasional problems with a casing splitting or simply expanding until jammed. I have had a few long-rifle misfires.
theeddorian you know I can't recall one ether.. Hell out of the millions of .22 rimfire I have had shot I have had maybe a 50-100 rounds not fire that was the round fault.
No other channel has such comprehensive comparisons of ammo ballistics data. There are plenty of channels that use ballistic gel but I like the meat target. As always thanks for the great videos!
I really liked the results on the meat target. The 5.7 did a satisfactory amount of damage to the "lungs" without hurting the bystanders. Add the advantages of low recoil, a flat trajectory, armor piercing capabilities depending on ammo, and high magazine capacity, and I'd say it's a great caliber for many self defense purposes
I agree. I like the 23+1 capacity of the PSA Rock and the longer range capability. If you carry a second magazine, we're talking about 47 shots, accurate past 50 yards, that can pierce armor. I think 5.7 is a great option.
Hi Paul, another great and diligent video. I was glad you brought up "energy foot-lbs", (Kinetic Energy) as this fundamental physics term is often not mentioned but is fundamental to ballistics. KE is proportional to bullet mass X velocity squared. As such, if you double the bullet mass at the same velocity, you double the KE. If you maintain the mass and double the velocity, then you quadruple the KE. Therefore, when comparing calibers with varying bullet mass and velocities, it's important to keep track of KE. :) But the ultimate measure of course is the Paul Harrell patented Meat Target!
@@MoparSammy I don't think the Ruger 57 would be. California requires any handgun to be on an approved list. The manufacturer has to pay fees to get on the list. There really has not been time for the state to approve of the firearm even if Ruger has submitted it.
That FN ammo was designed to be less powerful since the Ps90 has a longer barrel. This prevents them from getting sued by gun owners when they blow up their Ps90 with FN ammo in their FN gun. It also prevents people like the brady bunch from giving them drama since higher powered ammo would be "armour piercing"
Recoil is a big issue, more so that most people will even admit to, that goes for rifles as well. It's a fine handgun, and with good quality ammo it's an effective one for the purposes it was designed for.
I'd recommend one of the Elite brand 5.7 loadings, assuming you try it to make sure it works in the gun. I think most of them will outperform factory FN or the American Eagle choices. They go faster, without the risk of hand loads.
And this is why I tend to be a fan of the 10mm.,shoots flat at long range, packs a heavy bullet like the .45 ACP.,plus it's very high velocity if loaded with the 135 grain hollow points Paul.
10mm is a beast but you can't carry as much ammo around and it has a lot more recoil which requires more effort and concentration to make follow-up shots. Also not even Underwood 10mm can go through 3A.
@@enriqueengelbracht6320 Neither can the 5.57,but you CAN get armor piercing 10 mm.and.45+P+rounds that WILL go through both sides of 3A. This isn't necessary though, the impact of a 230 grain Buffolo-Bore(hotter then underwood)will crush bones without needing to penetrate at all. They make double-stack 10mm's that will hold 16 rounds,it's pretty pointless though, after the first shot, your chances of being hit go up to nearly 100%,so if you can't stop"what ever"is coming at you much after 2 shots, most likely you'll be hit.(par of averages)
@@4gauge10 Buffalo Bore goes for around $1.50 per round and I imagine it kicks even harder than Underwood. Red box aluminum core 5.7 will go through 3A and point of impact will not variate that much even with its low weight, it also tumbles like a 5.56 when hits a fleshy target. Red box 5.7 isn't that exotic anymore and is relatively cheap everywhere I've looked for it. I've seen it go for as low as $.45/rnd and usually goes for $.50-$.55 where I live (US territory) which isn't even close to gun friendly. 10mm is fun at the range and I bet its effective against big game but under a stress situation it's better to have an easy to shoot gun with lots of rounds to account for a wide variety of situations and also missing. Do you have a source on .45+p+ and 10mm 3A penetration?
@@enriqueengelbracht6320 The 10mm.has very low recoil,I can dump 16 rounds in about 2-3 seconds, like I said,if I want penetration,I'll use armor piercing, but that isn't necessary, impact has much more effect then penetration does. If you don't believe this, ask your insurance company how many people die instantly from being hit by a car,in alot of cases, not one drop of blood is spilled anywhere, but the victim passes from instant shock of the impact itself. Hey Paul,
Will a .38 special shoot out of .357 semi auto pistols like Coonan and Desert Eagle ?
Another great and educational video Mr. Harrell, thank you for this. If only the ammo for the 57 was a bit cheaper I think it would make a great friendly competition gun. My buds and I shoot against each other for friendly competition and it's just much more cost effective to use my custom Glock 19. Thank you again for all the videos
I've seen that video, Mr. Harrell. Impressive penetration feat by the FiveSeven with just ballistic tip.
I'm in the "I'll Probably Never Need To Do That, But I'd Like To Be Able To" squad
40gr @ 1701fps = 257ft/lbs; 40gr @ 2040 = 370ft/lbs - *substantial difference*
I ultimately settled on a powder charge which gives me an average of 1950fps, and tested it in 20% clear ballistics gel with excellent results.
Bro he has other older videos going on about the topic, he didn't mentioned here cause it was obvious from previous videos.

5.7 velocities sound like dates I was supposed to memorize in history class
1664 is also a beer by French brewer Kronenbourg.
Put it through a 10" PS90 barrel and you will be talking about the future.
That is exactly correct.
Definitely a badass piece.
also, like a 5.56 out of an AR platform, those rounds tumble and bounce around chewing up ur insides.

Also, double checking the number crunching:

Great info and great video. As far at the 50 yard shots, I remember qualifying with 38 special ammo at 50 yards, it will work.

I watched the video when it was published, and again today because of the ruger 57 :)
I've watched this before, I'll still pick the fn over ruger

Let’s settle this once and for all, forget any and all bias reviews, advertisments, paid endorsements, and the ballistic gel tests where the 5.7 got it's butt kicked.
------------------------5.7mm S4M----------9mm 115gr
Energy----------------405ft/lbs------------500 ft/lbs-----Advantage 9mm
Momentum----------10lbs--------------------23lbs-------Huge Advantage 9mm
Frontal Area-.-------.0394-------------------.1007-------Huge Advantage 9mm
Sectional Density---.08----------------------.130--------Large Advantage 9mm
Now forget the ultra high performance hard to find ammo and lets focus on the stuff you can buy over the counter at any halfway respectable local gun shop.
-------------------------SS195LF--------Carbon 115gr JHP
Energy-----------------255ft/lbs---------466ft/lbs----Large Advantage 9mm
Momentum----------- 7lbs---------------22lbs--------Huge advangage 9mm
Frontal Area---------.0394--------------.1007--------Huge advantage 9mm
Sectional density----.08----------------.130---------Large advantage 9mm
By every measurement we know of the 9mm is superior to the soft tissue performance of the 5.7x28, I have asked on many occasions for the 5.7 junkies to explain to me what magic energy somehow makes it more deadly and nobody can explain it to me, I wounder why. Even the most hardcore 5.7 fan should understand why I am so skeptical of it's "advantages" over conventional handgun rounds. If you do the same comparison with the 40, 10mm, 357 Sig or any other modern handgun round the comparison get REAL bad for the 5.7x28.
Once again, regarding all talks about Fort Hood shooting’s victims being killed with single 5.7x28 projectile.
www.foxnews.com/us/soldier-who-charged-at-ft-hood-gunman-was-shot-12-times-before-dying
So many these days base their beliefs on nothing but feelings.
With all recent drive-by shootings, home invasions, etc., I value more and more the projectile's ability to penetrate at least 14" of a body tissue; or a glass, a car door, etc. - without significant loss of Ek = 1/2 mv2. So, unless it is $5 ea. of SS190 armor piercing rounds, otherwise commercial 5.7x28 ammo does not meet that criteria and even .22WMR from pistol barrel outperforms it.
www.quotemaster.org/Ammo#&gid=1&pid=6
Therefore, without SS190, 5.7x28 is out of its element.

I would rather the 7.62×25 to be honest.
I wouldn't mind having one... Don't really need it... But when has that stopped me?

This review came at the right time. I was at the gun shop yesterday, looking for a handgun to shoot my 22 WMR ammo (I have about a thousand rounds), when the salesman asked if I had
tried the FN 5.7.
Larry Baker You do realize the V in VMax stands for varmint, yes?
Classic Paul. ❤❤❤ Thanks for everything. I'm looking forward to continuing adventures with Roy.

Congratulations Paul.
Just found the channel and I'm really impressed! Very well done! Love the presentation, extremely professional.
Nice. I like the comparison of extremes. Another fast but small grain bullet of interest to compare is the 22TCM. Well done as usual.
The 22TCM is no joke has better ballistics than the 5,7 and I own both 3 TCM and one 5.7 love them both.
I've always liked the 22TCM even before Amscor offered it. But after have both. I dropped the 5.7 in favor of the 22 TCM
The fireball on those 22tcm is awesome.

Sir... Tango Mike for the video... I am retired military (6years 11B/ 14 years 89D)... your no nonsense, reality based assessments are why I have recommended your evaluations to to those I respect and wish to enlighten. Keep up the good stuff... we appreciate your efforts...
It’s 00.07 am in the UK , and I was off to bed , then the legend post’s a new video, oh well I can sleep when I die.
Is it ever 00.07 pm in the UK?
@@2ndAveScents He's probably trying to communicate more clearly to Americans. We generally don't use the twenty-four hour system unless in the military, so I'm thinking he used this designation to cover all bases.
@@AlastorTheNPDemon Nah, it's just a symptom of being up at 0007hrs and watching gun videos, when he really ought to be in bed already... I know exactly how he feels!! :-D
@@2ndAveScents Actually yes... The decimal point signifies use of the 12hr clock, or civvy time, meaning that 00.07pm would be 1207hrs or "7 minutes past midday? Damn, I'm late for lunch".
@Bosingr A true 007 fan would have a Beretta 418, skeleton stock, in a chamois leather holster... 😜
No joke, when he rolled up in the roadrunner I was thinking to myself it couldn't get any cooler than that
just wear the fleece in the front
Congrats on hitting 200k subs!
shows the 5.7 is doing pretty much exactly what it is designed to, weather those results are what you want or not.
Jim Bob where did you hit them?
@@gooddoggo2258 mostly lung shots, dont get me wrong they did die....
Its just that i had to get in my truck to run over to where they fell (sometimes 300-400 yards) or i had to drill em several times.
Even 9mm ball drops a lowly coyote quite well, the 5.7 is the first round ive had issue with since i quit using rimfires.....
Jim Bob Yeah, that’s definitely too long for a coyote to go down. Thanks for an actual example of how 5.7 actually performs outside of gel tests.
I do love hearing someone taking about my home state Wyoming, and very informative video.
It’s also just a really fun handgun. Ammo prices have gone down for it, and it’s a really light recoiling gun.
Oxide tested it against Soviet paratrooper armor (what the platform was designed for) and it's pretty bad
@@marblemarble7113 Still better than a 9mm, though i'd be cool to see the test.

Mr. Harrell, I just wanted to say congratulations on breaking 200k subscribers.
As of Feb 7, 2020 congrats on 400k subs!
Another great video Paul, sorry for delay in watching and giving this one a thumbs-up. I REALLY appreciate your calm, matter of a fact style and the Shatner-esk pauses as you describe them, really hardly noticeable.
Paul, i like your consistency, honesty, experience, entertainment factor, pertinent information, and your sarcasm .
Thank you, Paul, for all the work you do for the shooting sports community.
You had me at MEAT TARGET!
...and if you like that, boy there's tons more of it here for you. :)
How do you think 5.7 compares to 7.62 tokarev? It has a similar velocity yet heavier projectile.
What about the .22 magnum?
@Fractured Hearts
.22 WMR is a nice round, but I would not bet my life relying on a rimfire round with fragile case thickness.
Markius Fox " rimfire round with fragile case thickness " Wow that's a new one on me. Please tell me more.
theeddorian you know I can't recall one ether.. Hell out of the millions of .22 rimfire I have had shot I have had maybe a 50-100 rounds not fire that was the round fault.
Idk how much thought you give what your about to say but I love your measured seemingly thought out delivery. I could listen to u talk guns all day.
No other channel has such comprehensive comparisons of ammo ballistics data. There are plenty of channels that use ballistic gel but I like the meat target. As always thanks for the great videos!
Thanks. Yesterday I filmed FN FiveSeven vs Kel-Tec PMR-30 vs. the meat target. Should be on line in a week or two.
👍👍 would love to hear more about the common pistol calibers and how they compare to each other when used for deer hunting. 👍👍
@@benmenkethe best! Well maybe not the absolute best but definitely more than "good enough".
22 people are disappointed in the lack of rapid fire, 10 inches from the target, straight to the face, from a Glock 17.
Tim Kennedy recently did a video about changing over to carrying a 5.7x28.It was eye opening and informative as well. Good vid Paul Harrell👍
I would like to see a 22 tcm.
I agree. I also would like to see a 22 tcm vs. FN 5.7 vs. 22 magnum meat target comparison.
Justice405
and also in comparison against 9mm, 40 s & w, 357 and 45acp
In for 22tcm. DO IT PAUL.
Me too. It's an interesting little cartridge.
I'd also love to see some tests and comparisons of .22TCM
And now Ruger makes it interesting with a handgun, the Ruger 57 that is 1/2 the price.
.357Addict But only two thirds the magazines. Still a deal
Anyone know if they’re for sale in California?
@@MoparSammy I don't think the Ruger 57 would be. California requires any handgun to be on an approved list. The manufacturer has to pay fees to get on the list. There really has not been time for the state to approve of the firearm even if Ruger has submitted it.
@@MoparSammy Ruger only available to LEO (off roster in CA) That's why I had to go with FN
@Simply The Best What guys are you referring to? I would not live in California if you paid me.
Just as i was about to shut down my browser, Paul slapped my mouse hand. Thanks Paul!
Your ending is one I use often in my shop. Pick your gun for your intended uses or what you consider to be the most useful options for your life.
The FN FiveSeveN is also a great gun for people with arthritis or other issues in hands or wrists that leave them weakened there.
Very good point.
@Blue Friend Those are ok too,but doesn't pack the needed 200-230 knock-down power of the 10mm.or .45 ACP.
@@enriqueengelbracht6320 The 10mm.has very low recoil,I can dump 16 rounds in about 2-3 seconds,like I said,if I want penetration,I'll use armor piercing,but that isn't necessary,impact has much more effect then penetration does.
If you don't believe this, ask your insurance company how many people die instantly from being hit by a car,in alot of cases, not one drop of blood is spilled anywhere, but the victim passes from instant shock of the impact itself.
I reload my own ammo and have shot against every caliber you can think of,but none compare to the 10mm.
If your recoil sensitive, maybe the 10mm.isn't for everybody.
I use maximum loads of 200-230 grain moving at 1,500+F.P.S.,it's like being hit by a Mack truck.
I also shoot .460 S/W one-handed in rapid fire D/A without any issues, again, using maximum loads of 395 grain solids that are certified against the"big-6".If it's good enough for a nearly 14,000 pound African bull 🐘 elephant,it's way over kill for anything less then that.
Seen a presentation with a rail gun on a small scale utilizing a 3mm projectile but firing it at a little over 33,000feet per second. It was making 12 inch holes in 5 inch thick tungsten plates and it just blew my mind how powerful it was.
