It made a lot more sense for Shawn to win it. At the time, the WWF only did like one mainstream show a decade in the UK. Bulldog winning would have been a feel good moment for the night but the very next day back to the mid card he went. He also made a critical error in telling his family he was going to win the match and dedicating it to his dying sister in a business where anything can change at any time. Also, we don't really know for sure that Shawn 'convinced' Vince to do anything. That is a narrative the dirt sheets have been pushing since then, but no one really knows for sure. Shawn and Vince both say it was Vince's idea. Even if it wasn't, Vince had the final say regardless.
Taker/Hassan should get an honorable mention. Though that segment only coincided with the UK attacks, the implication of Taker getting publicly executed by a task force presumably from the Middle East still hit too close to home for anyone affected by past terrorist attacks.
Oh yeah especially with Sargeant Slaughter's heel turn and making him a Iraqi Sympathizer as Slaughter revealed in a interview that the reason why he was all to happy to drop the belt at Wrestlemania VII to Hogan and go back into his Face gimmick of America's favorite Sargeant at Arms a couple of weeks post Mania was because him and his family were getting death threats in real life from certain "fans".

Misawa's death happened when I was still fairly new to Japanese wrestling. It really stuck out in my mind how they blended reality in with a focus on the back suplex being put over as a death move (quite literally).
Well the misawa's death is literally used in every go shiozaki's fued (go shiozaki was misawa's student and his tag partner during the night he died). Literally one of the top rated match of Noah was go shiozaki vs takeshi sugira and the promo literally had misawa in it. And akitoshi saito was made a top heel in Noah just because his move killed misawa (and saito faced many verbal abuse including death threats to a point where saito wanted to kill himself).

The fact they managed to put the move over as a death move, all while putting Saito over as a somewhat sympathetic babyface who was adverse emotionally to using the move. I may not be remembering all the details 100% correctly but I remember it being beautifully done.

Gotta disagree with that last part. Context is key. However they both sucked. The Orton one happened incredibly soon after Eddie’s death while WWE kept exploiting Eddie’s death. The MJF one happened years after. But in a mid feud that made it feel incredibly jarring. At least the Orton one was a world title feud that ultimately had a feel good ending.
