Been listening to Possessed since before Seven Churches even came out and will continue to do so. Not tossing my albums out because of some accusation either.
I would not have much to listen too if I cared about what the musicians are doing in their personal lives!!! " Seven Churches " will always remain one of heaviest albums. 𖤐⸸💀⸸𖤐
But it’s different if they’re creeping around on children. Would you want this to happen to your kids or family members? The music is still good though.
I love your explanation, Matt. I agree 100% with every single word and all the takes you shared. The perfect example for me would be Neurosis. What S.K. did was horrendous and despicable. That can’t take away the countless hours of listening and the positive impact those Neurosis albums have on me. Of course, I understand people that can’t or don’t want to separate art from artist. You may listen to them but not buy albums/merch or you can never listen to them again at all… For each its own. It’s absolutely understandable and respectable. Where to “draw the line” in what you want to listen or support is absolutely personal imho For many people: we are here just for the music. Period. Looking forward to a longer version video with your additional takes in this topic. Keep it up, mate!
This reminds me of the Dr Disrespect situation. The girl and her family have not pressed charges (yet), but it can happen. This is why you never put yourself into this situation. Block, ignore, deny group invitations, etc where underage people are concern.
Jeff isn't my friend, nor is Dagon, Varg, etc. I don't have a personal relationship with them, so their personal behavior doesn't concern me much. I'm not going to deprive myself of classic albums because someone on the recording is a bad person. Total agreement with you, Matt!
Totally agree with your takes on it. It's separate to morals. We love the music because we develop a relationship with how it makes us feel. That relationship is subjective, unique to us, and is actually in some ways unrelated to the artist. It might be BY them but once it's out there - it's open to take a life of it's own. I know it's different because it's "fresh" so this might be a false comparison - but you can look at how awful and anti-Semitic Wagner was and notice that a lot of people have separated the art from the artist there - including Stephen Fry who did a documentary about his relationship with the music and how he - being a Jew - could reconcile the fact the creator of the music he loves most would despise him. Then you've got the case of Carlo Gesualdo who is praised nowadays as one of the greatest Renaissance era composers. Dude was insane - he caught his wife cheating on him and in the heat of the moment brutally murdered them both. Hasn't impacted his popularity one bit! Well he's not exactly a household name but yeah... what I mean is that it hasn't really harmed the appreciation of his music for fans for that genre.
Black and white thinking and social pressure dominates the debate here. If an artist should be 100 percent uncompromised , inherently all good, there would be no music left. People who say they are Mother Theresa of kindness and goodness are not to be trusted. (Mother Theresa herself was a fraud). Phil Spector , R Kelly and many metallo’s have a massive criminal record but in a way I think the music they made is still great and reminds me that a person is not only entirely despicable, whatever the grim crimes. ( R Kelly and Spector must accord to and have been judged by the law, rightly so ). Ah, and how many musicians, artists, politicians, humans that have not been effectively cast out by (media) trials, are of sound and correct behaviour? There are so many that are very shady yet they are lauded because of integrity and likeability. It is a massively hypocritical world in every way.
Separating the art from the artist is the best thing you can do. Coping and saying that it's all made up is not the answer. So when it comes to bands, I just couldn't care less for anything other than the art itself. But I still really appreciate when the members are actually at least tolerable human beings.
If proven, then he deserves whatever punishment is fitting. As for listening to the music he helped create, why not? I've read a lot of people saying how they really enjoy an album, but won't listen to it because so and so did from the band did this, that or the other, especially the black metal fans. Separating art from the artist is a very simple task for me but I understand, mostly, that some people can't.
@@seanbeast939 100% agreed mate. I get that it depends from person to person, but before I get dumb comments, I thought I’d clear this up a bit. Jeff’s dumb decisions don’t affect me, but yeah if all of this is true, he definitely deserves comeuppance.
