      Yes I’d say safely that Napalm pushed the envelope to the extremes, and Carcass turned it into the most incredible artistic expression I’ve ever witnessed. The whole catalog of Caracas’ work, including the newest EP is simply beyond comparison and just when I think they are done and have no more musical wizardry to bestow upon us, I am wrong beyond my own comprehension. I even expected the latest song, “Slaughtered in Soho” to be another very good song. I was wrong. It is simply one of the most beautiful melodies where Bach would be proud of his multi century influence and yet the song is brutal and somewhat comical all at the same time- But that’s Carcass, tongue in cheek, biting the cheek, smiling wryly, triple entendres, deadly serious, and playfully exercising our lexicon past the limits of known verbiage. Between the two albums Necroticism and Heartwork, there are dozens of permutated utterances requiring many hours with a medical dictionary and a musical dictionary for me to decode it all, and the result is even more crazy, beautiful, insightful, and real than any artistic endeavor should be.

    • @metalswifty23
      @metalswifty23 2 ปีที่แล้ว +38

      @@angelinabla7891 "Heavy" is a somewhat subjective term. I personally consider doom metal and its many derivatives to be the pinnacle of "true" heaviness (slow, crushing riffs, beefy bass, pounding drum sound), whereas death metal is faster, more brutal and aggressive. Death metal is obviously still heavy, but in a different way, and not to the extent of heaviness that riff driven metal bands can provide.
      Under either definition, I still wouldn't put Metallica anywhere near the tip of a heaviness scale, but they're still heavy, they have slow, driven riffs at times, and to someone who had only heard them (as the original comment said about their friends), then they're obviously gonna be the heaviest thing going until being shown otherwise.

    • @walidamin1804
      @walidamin1804 2 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      As someone who listens to quite a bit of guitar music, I never understood the "heavy-ness" contest. Besides the fact that it's a completely subjective thing anyway, different bands will just sound different and one genre is not better than another just because it's "heavier". I always interpreted heavy as bassy, lumbering rhythms. By that measure though, there's some Noise rock that is probably much "heavier" than even Carcass here. You typically wouldn't apply that sort of term to a noise rock band however, so I don't really see the point. I realize that throwing the term around is more or less specific to metal, but still, it seems a bit pointless.

    Magniloquent, bleeding dark
    Monotonous palate, murky spectrum, grimly unlimited
    Food for thought, so prolific
    In contrasting shades, forcely fed
    Abstraction, so choking, so provocative
    A canvas to paint, to degenerate
    Dark reflections - degeneration

    Dark reflections, of dark foul light

    I was never a diehard fan of extreme metal but when I first heard ‘Heartwork’ back in 1993 thanks to some school friends, it was a revelation. Carcass had/have so much melody mixed in with their brutal tones, it’s actually really easy listening as far as extreme music goes. Such killer grooves and Jeff Walker’s vocals just had something ultra appealing about it. They were trailblazers of multiple sub genres of metal and each album was a new blueprint. Few of their contemporaries at the time matched their level of melody with heaviness. And almost 30 years later they’re still providing quality!

    Heartwork was so revolutionary at the time, merging the brutality of grind and death metal with the fist-pumping feel of classic metal like Maiden or Dio that got me into metal in the first place. Death and Atheist were going for something similar, but were more proggy/techy and didn't have that "just go out and kick ass" kind of attitude that Carcass displayed.
