    Damn, even with three extra engines, they still had to run them in notch 8 with wheels spinning! Rain and wet rails certainly didn't help. Some trainmaster/yardmaster didn't do their homework on power requirements when they put that train together!

    • @demos9677
      @demos9677  ปีที่แล้ว +5

      2 stalls that day,one the next and one yesterday that required 3 locos from the border. The 2x1 configuration works in ideal dry conditions but they struggle. I'm not sure why they stopped useing mid dpu's here. Only the long potash and grain have those. Potash usually runs 2x2x1 on the long ones.

    It is cool when a train stalls and another group of locomotives is called in to pull those guys out. Reminds me of when CN came to the rescue of CP at the Detroit Windsor tunnel in early 90s.

    That is really cool and I understood what those guys were saying to each other and how goddamn dicey it is. It is all about Power at the end of the day and they have known the grade forever so the math is childsplay and the railways cut it razor thin to the limit for Locomotive power and DPU technology - But obviously they err towards failure and that sucks huge!!! Boy, it sure is good there is no caboose with a poor old Conductor freaking out when the stall happens!! Maybe on the big hill coming up from Field --- Did we roll back!!! At least there has been progress from that... We just went into Emergency on one of my student trips. I think it is atrocious that these trains are underpowered and crap out but there is a whole lot wrong from what I see and hear.

      Nothing boring about a good locomotive

    • @johnjohnii5849
      @johnjohnii5849 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The EMDs probably started wheelslipping when the speed started dropping. As a locomotive slows down the motors draw more amperage and make more tractive effort. Hate to say it but the GEs have a far better truck design and can hold traction on the rails. That's why they are preferred on mountain passes by almost all class 1s today.

      Canadas deadliest rockslide. There is a huge fault running through the mountain but there is also an underground coal mine. The slope on the east side lies on a fault also and is said will someday also slide.

      That rock slide buried an entire town. Lots of people lost their lives, they never really dug out the old town but cleared a path for the railroad and the highway. The town reformed next to it.
