I was a pretty hardcore rider from 2002-2008 and rode freight trains all over but mostly the South East. We called NS “Nazi Southern” because of their strict policies against train riders. They encourage new employees to always call in tramps, and even had a worker in Irondale (B-Ham NS Yd) call to me in the woods “you can come out just wanna tell ya when next train is coming” while two local police cars were parked next to him. If they wanted to arrest me they woulda had to trek through the thick poison ivy like I had to to get away! Let the hobos ride I say, historically railroads caused a lot of death and suffering. Wealthy Rail barons slaughtered Indians and killed off the buffalo to near extinction. They took advantage of immigrants and used them for slave labor often working them to death.

We're the only country that takes freight hopping so seriously, its ridiculous. Most places its a slap on the wrist, $50 fine, and a lecture. Here it can be jail time. I mean c'mon...
First, its a private rail company. It would be like a guy bumming a ride on your car bumper and not offering a few bucks for gas. Second, its EXTREMELY dangerous. Men like this die every day from mishaps on private property such as rail lines.
I used to be a brakeman out in the Rockies. Hobos would gather in camps at the edge of the yards, and every now and then one or more would hop a boxcar (never an open car). We didn't care and neither did the railway bulls. We can't all fly first class, but we're all going to the grave.

He had all kinds of surveillance equipment and they suspected he might have been heading for the Limerick Nuclear Plant. He was living in West Reading.

I have a few hobo guys I follow and the reason I follow them is for one the scenery two what is it like to ride on a train three to see if they get busted. That's my reason.
I rode the rails from Thunder Bay Ontario to Banf Alberta. We jumped in one of the diesel units and the crew came to us with coffee and sandwiches during the ride! Better jump off before the train gets in the yard, otherwise your fenced in and railroad cops will get ya.
For those griping about the unwanted passenger on the train, I now understand why railroads are sensitive about people trespassing on their property, especially if it’s a heavily used line like here. I was reminded of someone I knew of who was late for work many years ago and tried to cross between a pair of stopped rail cars, only for the train to suddenly lurch into motion, causing her to lose her balance, and then her arm at the shoulder. She ended up going back to her hometown and living on disability with family members until she passed away of old age a few years ago.
Trains are fascinating! They run on all steel wheels, on steel railroad tracks. Every individual freight car has its own brakes and when stopped has a few extra inches of hitch-slack, between each and all freight cars! This individual railcar slack & brake system allows the train to stop and start, one car at a time, on inclines, uphill, downhill, or on level track & how a very few train-engine cars, can pull the trailing 30 to 80 million lbs of freight-cars. Hobos did ride freight trains before 1960, used to sleepover in our neighbors hay & straw barnlofts, steal a chicken or 2, and sometimes haunt our midwest farm neighbors, only 1 to 2 miles distant.
I can only imagine what would happen if the hobo happened to be a minority particularly an African American. I really don’t wanna go into details but given the past incident with George Floyd, I could see this happening.
From 1959 to 1965, I grew up in Brookpark, Ohio in a new housing area on the edge of civilization and spend most of my time out in the woods. In 1965, when I was 11, my parents moved into the west side of Cleveland, Ohio. For over a year I watched and studied yard crews getting on and off rail cars getting sorted at a yard east of the Cleveland airport. At 13, I took to hopping New York Central then Penn Central trains with a friend to escape the city as I hated Cleveland. Most of the time we didn't get caught and got off the train before it came into a yard, and caught another train leaving in the direction we came in from. A few times we did get caught and were not charged with anything. Just sent back home. At my age now, I wouldn't get the same treatment as we did as juveniles. I've also noticed that freight cars are no longer passenger friendly like they were in the late 60's.

They encourage new employees to always call in tramps, and even had a worker in Irondale (B-Ham NS Yd) call to me in the woods “you can come out just wanna tell ya when next train is coming” while two local police cars were parked next to him. Hobos did ride freight trains before 1960, used to sleepover in our neighbors hay & straw barnlofts, steal a chicken or 2, and sometimes haunt our midwest farm neighbors, only 1 to 2 miles distant.
the hobo should just claim he is an illegal alien and get a free pass
