I LOVED Gone to See the River Man! I notice with extreme horror books I don't care for the ones that are just about how shocking and gross they can be. I still want a good story and interesting characters, and Gone to See the River Man provided that. So good.
It's a great book, I think The Girl Next Door by Jack Ketchum, Let's go Play at the Adams by Mendal W. Johnson and Brother by Ania Ahlborn fit into the same category.
That's more reason for me to read the book, I'm trying to read horror as I've found that I love the writing technique for the genre and also love the mystery of the stories but I never know where to look to find good stories and not just gore for the sake of it

6:27 "You just don't know if it's going to be super sexual or super bloody." Me risking my sanity on AO3 trying to figure out if Explicit means extreme sex or extreme gore because the tags aren't making it clear:
for some reason the neck stretch on the cover of his pain almost looks comical, like when a cartoon character stubs their toe or something and goes "OWWWWOOOGAAA YOWWIEEEE"
Wow… I finished Gone to See the River Man last night and it was so much deeper than I thought it would be. I expected a straightforward and violent extreme horror story but shit got DEEP. I’m still processing how I feel about the whole thing but I can def say it’s super unique and unlike anything I’ve read so far. Very impressed and can’t wait to dive into more Kristopher Triana stories
"His pain" made me feel lonely, like i wanted someone to understand my pain too. Its good writing that made me relate and empathize my unrelated trauma to his. I read it all in one sitting, because i was enthralled.
I was blown away by how much character development Kristopher Triana managed to get in such a short story. The twist definitely bothered and disturbed me because it hit too close to home but I thought it was a very good and complete narrative story. I had a hard time figuring out how to rate it because the contents bothered me but the writing was well done, so I split the difference and gave it a. 3.5/5.
It's definitely hard to rate books like these. They just don't really fit into a 5 star scale like most books do haha. And I agree. The main character was so interesting.
as a constant horror reader myself, 100 pages a day is a good goal. that's awesome u do it! Id say im around 50 pages a day. I'm currently reading Hidden Pictures by Jason ReKulak. a recovering addict gets hired to babysit a sensitive boy. He draws pictures that get more sinister and detailed :o not bad so far. id also recommend Perfect Nightmare by John Saul.
I love these videos!!! Maybe you could do a spoiler-free and then a spoiler review of the books? I would love to hear more about the story but I would not like to read them :D I appreciate your work! Love to yoh
I absolutely LOVE your videos! You have such a delightful personality, and I love how much you love your fur babies :) Your book reviews are fantastic, and you really make us feel like a part of your experiences. Thanks so much, and Happy Halloween :)
I read Maeve Fly because you inspired me to and I'm so glad I did!!!! I think I'm slowly getting into extreme horror and it's a wild ride, for sure!!!! 😅
"His Pain" intrigued me so much, I actually bought the book digitally and read it all in one go with this video still open on another tab. Having read so many horrible things on the Internet over the years, I don't really get disturbed by descriptions of physical violence or gore anymore, so the aspect of the book that really surprised me was how psychological and philosophical it was. I don't want to spoil anything, especially since this book is so short, but as you said in your review, that one paragraph really makes you stop and think. It's hard to recommend this book to anyone, but this story is definitely more than just shock value for the sake of shock value. Thank you for making this video, I'm definitely subscribing and will most likely be checking out more of these messed up books in the future.
Glad to see you enjoyed the riverman book. Made me sick, but it felt deeper than most horror I've read. The only issue I had was the way the characters spoke to one another felt horribly stilted at times.
Love your channel! I want to preface this by saying I'm not here to try to get you to change your mind on His Pain. I actually went to pick up a copy of it because of your review. Enjoying both the read and the message you got from it is totally fine! I just wanted to offer a different perspective on a specific topic in the book. As someone who is recovering from post-concussive syndrome and (ironically) who worked on biomedical devices to help people with head injuries, I thought the message in His Pain about the woo-woo treatment was questionable. At least where I am in the USA, people with head injuries or related neurological issues are often told to just "try meditation and therapy" instead of getting proven treatments or medications. This is because medical systems want to make money, and the most profitable thing is surgery. Most treatments and medications are not nearly as profitable. This is partly why I went into my line of work to begin with. The woo-woo thing is a focal point of the book, and the author didn't offer any nuanced takes on it. I wish he had since gotten philosophical about other things.
It’s amazing how quickly you’ve become jaded to these ONE OF USSSSS 😂 A good extreme horror for your next book haul that just came out would be BRAINWYRMS by Alison Rumfitt
I love your videos Anda and also your consistency . But apart from all this , your signature hairstyle..it suits you …seriously patent that hairstyle 😂😂😂❤❤❤
Already had 2 of these on my tbr, but adding the others. I very much appreciate your reading vlogs and comments. Would love to hear your thoughts on the Downside trilogy from SL Grey (or any one of the books) if you can work it into your schedule.
My favorite extreme horror is a novella called What Good Girls Do. Jesus, that novella both horrified me and made me cry so much. Another I liked was The Groomer by Jon Athan. I just got done reading The Girl Next Door and I thought it started slow but dang, once it started? Definitely rough. I think I'm the only person that really liked Yellow by Aron Beauregard (idk if I spelled that right). I just started Gone to See the River Man.
I havent read any of these but from what you said, its me charlie sounds like a wattpad or ao3 fanfiction. Id love to see more of what you like to read on here 😊
I'm really glad you liked Gone to see the River Man! I enjoyed it a lot as well; read it only on my kindle, but I liked it enough to buy a physical copy one day
The way you described how you enjoy the wording of some of these books really compels me to recommend "The Cipher", by Kathe Koja; I just finished reading it over the week, and it definitely should be up your alley. Kind of reminds me of something Clive Barker would write, but more "poetic", I guess. Either way, the book is pretty dark, and not much like anything else I've read, so I definitely recommend it if you haven't already read the book!
I love how you say you'll never do the splatterpunk and extreme horror vids again. (Mostly in jest) Yet every few months you come out with another one lol
Awesome video! I absolutely loved Gone To See The River Man, possibly in my top ten books of the year! I am kinda new to extreme horror and I adore this book. The most extreme novel I have read this year, and one I would highly recommend, is The Black Farm. Very, very dark and beautifully written! Happy Halloween! 🎃
River Man! 🙌🙌🙌 Just finished "Confessions" not really "extreme", but once you get through the first chapter it doesn’t let up. I’m reading "The Reddening" now.
I really wish you would do a non spoiler review and a spoiler review section in your videos. I cant stomach reading these myself and you leave me on the edge with the non spoiler descriptions!
If you enjoyed Kristopher Triana's writing, I would HIGHLY recommend his other book, The Thirteenth Koyote (and its sequel, Ballad of the Werevixens). They are both lengthy - 500+ pages - but SO GOOD. They are in the extreme horror/western genre. There is also a sequel to Gone to See the River Man titled Along the River of Flesh that is on my list to read soon.
I absolutely loved Gone To See The River Man, so much that I bought signed special editions of it and the sequel from the authors website. The best last 2 lines ever written.

I LOVED playground and Woom!! My mother read the silent patient and it sounds more like a mystery thriller rather than horror which isn’t rly my thing? But I’ve never read it
Gone to See the River Man is the maddest I’ve ever been at a character 😂; my first ‘extreme’ horror (non mainstream) and pleased with the character development. The sequel is well done too. Man is he great at writing psychopaths

I'm wondering if at some point you could make a video recommending extreme horror books that don't contain upsetting sexual content? I'm a big horror fan and am curious and want to get more into extreme horror books but every single one of them that I've come across always has extremely upsetting sexual scenes involving pedophilia or rape or whatever that I just don't want to read about.

Gone To See The River Man is still stuck in my mind although I read it quite a while ago! Not only because I enjoyed it but also because I had the weirdest dreams while reading it LOL
I just bought two of these books on kindle and I can’t wait to read them!!!!! Playground was such a fun read for me so I hope the slob is as terrible 😅. Also idk if you’ve read it by Woom by Duncan Ralston was a WILD ride and I loved/hated every second of it
Found this channel from the extreme horror book readings and really enjoying it lol! If reading messed up horror books is just a thing you do now, Let's Go Play At The Addams and The Slob are worth looking at. The Slob is by Aron Beauregard who did Playground. Fun fact, there's actually a term for this genre, splatterpunk!
@@AndaKentlet’s go play at the adams is a read that I will truly never forget. Oh my god the ending?!?!? I could talk about extreme horror books for so long omg
Youre right about the bear over mountain lion. Especially depending on the bear. Idk its much easier to get bears to leave you alone then mountain lions. Those animals are scary.
Loving these vids!! 👍🏻✨👍🏻 I recently just purchased Tender is the Flesh ( based on your review 😊) and a book called Vox - horror/paranormal/giant creatures (I own a lot of Steve Alten) are my favourite genres to read, but I also love Dystopian novels. I’m probably too nervous to read some of these extreme ones but really appreciate your reviews and recommendations! I’m going to try The Hellbound Heart next (can’t believe I ve never read the book and I’m in my 40s!) and Haunted, thanks again 🎃
Thanks so much for watching! I've only read Meg by Steve Alten but I really enjoyed that one. I've been wanting to pick up the second one before I watch the second movie. I can't imagine you not liking The Hellbound Heart if you enjoy Hellraiser. One of the best horror books ever written (in my opinion).
@@AndaKent you re very welcome, credit where credits due! 👏🏻 I’m deffo going to get a copy of THH 👍🏻 and if you liked Meg I think you ll like the second one - the films are great fun, but personally I much preferred the books (more gore!) although some of the characters, such as Jonah’s wife and the doctor are such A- holes!! Also, I highly recommend The Loch by Steve Alten too, I could nt put it down. I’m also trying to get a copy of Vostok, which I think is about a giant crocodile or gator? Sounds interesting anyway! 🐊🐊🐊
Love these reviews. I also spotted your favourite, Terry Musalata’s original uncensored and unabridged baby in a blender is now available. It is quite a bit heftier! 😂
hmmm i was gonna go get charlie, but thanks for pointing that its not as extreme as people say... as for riverman i enjoyed it though it wasn't the amazing book everyone says it is.. i'm listening to the audiobook of the sequel "along the river of flesh" and it's got a different style (detective) continuing the story and really enjoying it. have not read a wraith white book, seems like that's the one to begin with
I have read some truly bleak, disturbing hardboiled crime fiction from the Hard Case Crime label: Little Girl Lost, Songs of Innocence (both by Richard Aleas), and both Money Shot, and Choke Hold by Christa Faust. These are not remotely enjoyable books, but dark, depressing, and personally, I needed some beers and a breather after. Money Shot is the "cheeriest" of the four, by far.
I have stopped this video only nine seconds in to type this as I know I have a problem like your self with these sick books 📚 and I know my wallet will be crying 😢 because I will be getting these books 📚 prayers and blessings to you and your husband and your families love your Aussie family friend John ❤❤❤what does your family think about your channel please ❤❤❤
Hi Anda! I read Zombie by Joyce Carol Oates based on your recommendations. WOW I feel like I needed to thoroughly scrub my brain after that one! 10/10 for absolutely disgusting me and creeping me out! Funny this is I read Gone to See the River Man right before and I was more horrified by by Zombie 😹. Anyways, love the vlogs as always, take care ❤
Have you read I’m thinking of ending things by lain Reid? My all time favorite not extreme but psychological horror books. It’s so incredible and beautiful and a 10/10 for me
oh my goodness you have to!!!!!! Pro tip tho dont google it. The first thing that comes up spoils the entire book (i learned this the hard way) just dive in headfirst and be horrified by what you're reading lol! @@AndaKent
Have you read Full Brutal by Kristopher Triana? That is the first book I read of his and will be starting Gone To See The River Man soon, once it arrives anyway!

Thank you for your sacrifice but these aren’t actually creepy, spooky scary but just gory. Could you do a video about spooky books? Like dread and ghosts?
You should read ''suicidas by raphael montes'', Realy good book! I dont know if theres any english translations yet, But i realy recommend this book ! Its extreme, really extreme.... The title would be suicidals in english, but i dont really know if there is an english version. I think its the type of book you would like because its... well, i cant find words to describe it .... Its about a group of teenagers that are planing to commit suicide and the book goes back and forth between the mothers of them in a police station and the teenagers in the past going to commit suicide. This isint a spoiler at all!!!! The book tells you this in the back cover!!!!
Gone to see the River Man stunned me, it was so unexpected but I think about it all the time. I think that means I liked it? It's Me, Charlie - I had the same reaction to the spit trigger, got to the spit content and thought, oh - maybe I don't like spit stuff. I just finished Maeve Fly after watching your review of that, oh man -- STELLAR. Thank you, loved it. Have you checked out A Certain Hunger by Chelsea G. Summers? I think it's an Audible exclusive but I can't recommend it enough, the sharp wit in it is UNMATCHED. It also low-key made me hungry. EAT THE PATRIARCHY. Love the channel, looking forward to more from you!
You should try Thomas Emson's novella Ironbones. Short, sharp, shock. Blistering pace. Gory but quirky. He's an established horror author with quite a few action-horror novels to his name.
I have had the same experience of thinking I am reading something illegal too. I had exquisite corpse on audible through my TV the volume was on 9 it came to a part that I panicked thinking my neighbor's heard it and would call the authorities on me. The TV got turned to 5 instead...lol😬

Gone To See The River Man is still stuck in my mind although I read it quite a while ago! Not only because I enjoyed it but also because I had the weirdest dreams while reading it LOL
Kristopher Triana just released part 2 of Gone To See The River Man. Have to read it this week and hope it’s just as good.
I just bought two of these books on kindle and I can’t wait to read them!!!!! Playground was such a fun read for me so I hope the slob is as terrible 😅. Also idk if you’ve read it by Woom by Duncan Ralston was a WILD ride and I loved/hated every second of it
Wrath James White is one of my favorite. He make great extreme horror books.
The scream blanket is so cute.
ur extreme horror reading vlogs are my absl fav
Carnage on 84th Street by Judith Sonnet or Chainsaw Hooker by Judith Sonnet. Enjoy, love your channel!
Talia took a direction I didn’t expect
Found this channel from the extreme horror book readings and really enjoying it lol! If reading messed up horror books is just a thing you do now, Let's Go Play At The Addams and The Slob are worth looking at. The Slob is by Aron Beauregard who did Playground.
Fun fact, there's actually a term for this genre, splatterpunk!
I do have both of these books. I'll have to make time to read them soon. Thanks for the suggestions!
@@AndaKentlet’s go play at the adams is a read that I will truly never forget. Oh my god the ending?!?!? I could talk about extreme horror books for so long omg
I love your vibes🎃👻💀📚📚
How pleasant. I require more!
Youre right about the bear over mountain lion. Especially depending on the bear. Idk its much easier to get bears to leave you alone then mountain lions. Those animals are scary.
Great video! And, my money’s on you over the bear lol.
Thank you! Finally somebody who takes me seriously. Haha.
Theres a sequel to Gone to see the Riverman!
Its called Along the River of Flesh. I hope youll read that one too!
❤
This video is amazing! We need more like this thanks!!
Your cat is so cute omg. Living vicariously through these videos because I cannot read anything near this graphic ☠
She's cute but very, very evil.
Love these reviews. I also spotted your favourite, Terry Musalata’s original uncensored and unabridged baby in a blender is now available. It is quite a bit heftier! 😂
I definitely debated buying that one. I still don't know if I can read more than 13 pages of that story haha
hmmm i was gonna go get charlie, but thanks for pointing that its not as extreme as people say...
as for riverman i enjoyed it though it wasn't the amazing book everyone says it is.. i'm listening to the audiobook
of the sequel "along the river of flesh" and it's got a different style (detective) continuing the story and really enjoying it.
have not read a wraith white book, seems like that's the one to begin with
Randomly found your channel. Totally awesome! I'm buying them all lol
Welcome! I hope you enjoy them.
I love your Buffali Bill sweatshirt! Where did you get it?
I loved this video so much!!
Reading The Troop by Nick Cutter right now and omg so good 💯👻
I've heard a bit about the author to His Pain. He sounds like quite the prolific author
Would love to see your reviews for the mystery box books
The most extreme horror book ever written is "The 120 Days of Sodom" by the Marquis De Sade.
Is it just me or do you have the coziest wardrobe I've ever seen 😭
I thought you said an 18 mile walk and I had to rewind to make sure you weren’t insane
😂😂 No, two is pretty much my max
I was the other way around Zombie didn't really do much for me
I'm so glad you enjoyed it! I can definitely see why it disturbed you. I read this one a few years ago and still think about it.
Reading "His Pain" is an experience I will never forget
If you ever dive into the world of disturbing comics, Crossed is a must read.
Any recommendations for creature horror book? Kinda like the terror or the ritual?
I think my favorite would be Summer of Night by Dan Simmons. Maybe I'll do a video about creature books. Thanks for the idea!
Okay, I like your vids. But, Imam obsessed with you Buffalo Bills sweatshirt! I am gonna go down a rabbit hole finding out where to get one.
I wish I could tell you where it was from but it was a gift :/ Hopefully you can find it somewhere.
I've read every novel Wrath James White has written, he's amazing. You should do video just on him. Succulent Prey and Cupid in Bondage are his best.
I'll absolutely be reading more of his books. This one was amazing. Thank you for the recommendations!
Have you read I’m thinking of ending things by lain Reid? My all time favorite not extreme but psychological horror books. It’s so incredible and beautiful and a 10/10 for me
Also honorable mention to his other book Foe which was slow at first but so worth it by the end. If you enjoyed his style of writing you’d love it ❤
I haven't. I've heard a few people talk about how much they enjoyed it though. I'll have to give it a read. Thanks for the suggestion!
oh my goodness you have to!!!!!!
QUESTION: I can barely finish a book on audio in a month, how do you finish all those books in a week? Do you speed read? Sincerely want to know. Thanks.
I think she said before that her read speed is around 100 pages a day. But for me it can take me months to finish a book 😬
Thank you for your sacrifice but these aren’t actually creepy, spooky scary but just gory. Could you do a video about spooky books? Like dread and ghosts?
Thanks for doing these, I do wish there were more extreme horror books without sexual violence in them though.
Yeah, I'm still looking for those myself haha. I'll keep you updated if I find any.
"vHOL Pea"
These reading vlogs are a blast.
Great content.
I have had the same experience of thinking I am reading something illegal too. I had exquisite corpse on audible through my TV the volume was on 9 it came to a part that I panicked thinking my neighbor's heard it and would call the authorities on me. The TV got turned to 5 instead...lol😬
Dude that shirt is badass
I'm halfway thu Talia and I had contemplate why I started following thus channel 😶😂
