    yesss that's what i loved so much about tinfoil butterfly - such strong themes and characters. the spooky setting is unsettling at times but it was just so much more than a spooky book - SO GOOD!

    I love Stolen Tongues! It has so many super creepy moments but the ending is just so lacklustre. The trouble is it began life as a reddit post on like creepypasta or something. So the author turned his real life fiances night terrors into a creepy story and wrote it from his own perspective, so that's why it's written from an outsider rather than from the person it's actually happening to. I would still reread it in a heartbeat and I still think it's the book that's genuinely creeped me out the most, but it's not perfect and I think it's origins are why.

    • @itsbells
      @itsbells  ปีที่แล้ว +6

      ohhhhh I did not know that! That's so interesting! That makes a lot more sense then lol

      True - sometimes creepypasta and NoSleep/reddit stories can vary in quality, but there's some that are popular and/or are surprisingly well-written (Penpal is another great one, along with The Showers and The Russian Sleep Experiment). There's also some others that are debatably good, but are going to need some transparent trigger-warnings attached to them because they involve disturbing content like SA (such as Borrasca, The Black Farm, and Tommy Taffy).

    Really enjoying this video :) I think it's important to point out for Moon of the Crusted Snow is that, even though the town itself is fictional, the historical context of why that town exists is not fictional (ie the Canadian government actually did force indigenous people all over Canada into Reserve land and does not provide them with the resources to sustain these towns). I also enjoyed Moon of The Crusted Snow so it's good to see other people talking about it :)

    Thanks for the rec for The Silent Companions that you reference at the beginning. I checked it out as an ebook after watching your gothic reads vid and it was the spooky book I’ve been looking for this season! Much more my vibe since I am not a horror reader in general and I could not put it down! Have already recommended it to a friend and returned it to the library so she can check it out 😊
    Definitely picking up some of these to try, When The Reckoning Comes has been on my TBR since Kayla talked about it and now it’s moved to the top of my list. Do more of these, maybe different genres if you want to venture out, who knows?

    I read Tender is the Flesh over a year ago, and I STILL think about it every now and then. Definitely more disturbing than scary, but such a good read. That author just released an English translation of a short story collection as well called Nineteen Claws and a Blackbird, which is SO good.
    Edit: I'm at your review of this currently and part of me almost wonders if the disconnect may have something to do with the fact that it is a translation. I've noticed with a lot of translated works, the tone does come across as slightly disconnected.

    • @kamigreen455
      @kamigreen455 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also I feel the same about Night of the Mannequins. I was pretty disappointed, however I LOVED SGJ's books The Only Good Indians, Mongrels, and My Heart is a Chainsaw. I haven't read his sequel to Chainsaw yet, but the other three are so good and fun to read.

    • @itsbells
      @itsbells  ปีที่แล้ว

      You're probably right about the translation aspect! That is something I notice with other translated books too and I genuinely just didn't think about that - i agree it's a book I really enjoy thinking and talking about.
      And dude I LOVED My Heart is a Chainsaw, and The Only Good Indians is at the top of my TBR, so I was very sad about Night of the Mannequins

    Glad to discover your channel and hear your take on these books. I cannot handle Tender is the Flesh..respect to anyone who can!
    The best horror book I’ve read this year is Suffer the Children by Craig DiLouie. You mentioned messed up children, it’s got those. The author managed to create a world where he thought of so much in 350 pages and every chapter felt important. I just love the perspectives he chose, even one character is a trash collector and that gave us access to this world that helped show so much.
    I’ve seen some reviews that they wouldn’t do what the parents did. As a parent I can say yes you would, you absolutely would. People take away different things from books, but that desperation might be the ultimate horror in the book to me.
    As you can tell I just wish everyone would read and enjoy this book. 😊
    I loved When the Reckoning Comes…I’ve already decided it’s required reading for my son when he gets a bit older (because of the gruesome scenes). But the thoughts through the main characters eyes about the plantation, horrific.

    Very happy for you that this Video got you so many new viewers 😊 I'm definetly picking up Tinfoil Butterfly!
    If you're up for something scary again I'd recommend The Luminous Dead by Caitlin Starling and Echo by Thomas Olde Heuvelt (both some of my all time faves). The Luminous Dead is a scifi horror blend with an incredible tense athmosphere and Echo is kinda similar to Stolen Tongues premise where this guy is in a terrible mountain climbing accident and his boyfriend is trying to help him through the trauma but quickly realises there's something very wrong with his partner.
    Both reads are not for everyone but they're absolutly worth a try!

      Booktubers are TH-camrs who’s content centers around books and reading! They are a kind of community on TH-cam, I think searching for “booktube” or book reviews on TH-cam should bring up some channels!

    I just finished The Hollow Places. One of my all time favourite horror books is "The Willows" by Algernon Blackwood (No not."woody" morewood as per the hollow places lol), so it was a suprise to start reading this and see its essentially an unofficial sequel 😂
    Seriously though, The Willows is the OG version of this book and so so much better. It's pretty short as well. Please add it to your ever growing TBR list!
    (Worth mentioning Kingfisher's style seems like it's not for me personally - the modern slightly cheesy/comedic way of presenting the story - I read the whole way through though.)

    Ghost stories are my thing, I don’t really find other subjects in the horror genre all that interesting. I am about half way thru The Silent Companions not even interested enough to finish it. Don’t get the love for that one.
    Tender is the Flesh was disturbing, but for me mainly because the writer had to have done some major research in factory farming and all I could think about it while reading it was the horror that millions of animals go through every day.

    Tender is the Flesh was absolutely nasty but I also didn’t really feel scared listening to the audiobook. I just felt yucky 😅 but if you want one that’s disturbing without the meats and body horror but enjoyed being unsettled, Confessions by Kanae Minato is amazing. I listened to that one’s audiobook and it was a total psychologically disturbing experience

    I was suuuper underwhelmed by Tender is The Flesh. Maybe i need to reread it but i got major vegan preachy vibes and then when i looked up the author, i was correct. Even the slaughterhouse scene didn't do much for me but maybe I was having trouble in general picturing things. The character also felt so flat and grey, but that was probably the point...it was just a big miss

    • @itsbells
      @itsbells  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      SAME. I felt like I had to work to care about it and that just isn’t how I like to engage in books. I didn’t know that about the author but honestly *unsurprising* lol

    i understand the criticism that it was about felix, instead of faye. But, i think that was really effective insofar as, if it was about faye, we'd need all the background about when she'd been to the cabin and what becca had to do with it and the fact that she'd seen the imposter before, etc. Like, in this instance, the part that made it really scary, was the fact that felix had absolutely no insight to what was going on. He only had tid bits and was going off random assumptions just to try and make everything better. Faye's experience was horrifying, for sure, but part of the horror in the book was that felix didn't even know if he was living with *faye* half of the time. I would love an alternate pov of course cause faye's experience was absolutely more terrifying than felix's. However, i think stolen tounges was written in felix's perspective so there was that added horror element of everyone being unreliable (either because theyre known to lie (faye's mom), they dont have the full information (felix), or they may not be themselves (faye)).

    • @sursh1429
      @sursh1429 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      if it was written from faye's perspective, then we'd know exactly when faye wasnt *faye* and i think that might ruin some of the horror/uncanniness

    • @sursh1429

      I absolutely agree with that analysis, and I bet if I read the book and reviewed it now I would likely have different opinions on the book's structure and why I didn't vibe with it as much as I wanted to.

      I definitely don’t mention it in the video so you didn’t miss it! I have always been interested in the story since it’s such a popular reference and decided to watch the movie first, and the visuals actually upset me so much for some reason that I’m scared of the book and just took it off my TBR and never thought about it again 😂

When The Reckoning Comes is the one horror book that has always peaked my interest but I think I'm too much of a scaredy cat to read 😅 GRAVITY FALLS FOR ADULTS WHY A I ABOUT TO SPRINT TO THE BOOKSTORE???? Nope never mind I need to sleep lol. I was hoping for a spoiler review for The Patient because now I want to know 😅 I'm a sleeptalker too so that's creepy to think about 😅
