Personally, I thought the critiques about the characters' 'wooden' facial expressions seemed exaggerated considering similar examples from the:
      - Resident Evil, Starship Troopers and Appleseed CGI animated movies
      - FPS video game cinematic scenes like in Call of Duty, Mass Effect and Halo.
I found myself enjoying the more limited mecha scenes+action, which I think enhances the mecha scenes+action enjoyment whenever they appear. They also further sell how deadly the Gundam is against Zeon's Zaku, Zaku Tank and Gouf models.
It's like I'm watching the original first two Predator movies where the Gundam's the Predator and Zeon's Zaku, Zaku Tank and Gouf models are the unlucky human soldiers/warriors/fighters the Predator aliens usually hunt for sport and trophies.
Plus, I found myself enjoying the details given to show the mobile suits' body+limb movements as I personally felt it reminds the viewers they are heavy, humanoid machines, not giant humans with fluid, organic movements.
I also enjoyed the greater amount of Zeon vs Federation action scenes involving their regular infantry, conventional AFVs and aircraft. The scenes where we see the regular Zeon and Federation regular infantry also try to face off against each other's mobile suits using their existing conventional AT weapons, Zaku Tanks and Guntanks and AFVs (especially the Type-61 and Magella tanks) adds more immersion and further sells how dangerous humanoid mobile suits are in-universe, which required the need to have humanoid mobile suits in-universe to face enemy mobile suits.
That portrayal reminds me of the Titanfall 2 trailer which mentioned that while overwhelming firepower+numbers and combined arms by conventional infantry and AFVs could take down Titan mechs, the most efficient counter against enemy Titan mechs and Pilot would be having your own Titan mechs and Pilots.

I recommend: For a reset or singular Gundam storyline:
Gundam Seed (Destiny, the follow up, bad) the movie Freedom was good, but you might need Destiny to see that one.
    Gundam 00.
    Iron Blooded Orphans.
    Gundam After War X.
Turn A Gundam - a fantasy Gundam series - lots of fun and unique.
Build Fighters Try is a unique spin about GUNPLA - so the gundam models - best of this type in my opinion. You can watch the initial Gundam Build Fighters too, but I thought Build Fighters Try was better.
Gundam Wing was good in the 90s, but I don't know how well its aged, it has pacing issues, Endless Waltz however, the movie, or special, still holds up.
    Main timeline of Gundam recommendations:
    Origins.
    Mobile Suit Gundam
    08th MS Team
    Thunderbolt
    War in the Pocket
    Zeta Gundam
    Double Zeta (or ZZ Gundam)
    Char's Counter Attack
Gundam Unicorn (I really loved this one).
Those are, in my opinion, the priorities for Universal Century - the official timeline.
Skip Witch from Mercury - in my opinion, it fails at being its own Gundam and more just uses Gundam to tell a very flimsy high school drama that somehow, the children's drama is the importance of the world/universal affairs - its stupid in my opinion.
F-91 not great... has potential but failed overall... maybe give that one a chance.
G Gundam is unique, its very dragon ball Gundam, its fine, I wasn't a big fan - see, I'd rather go Build Fighters Try.
Anyways, enjoy, Gundam has a wide range and a lot to offer - so you do you and enjoy what you connect with.

The ending was just stupid, in both how the Gundam was taken out and the utterly nonsensical decision making of Iria Solari.
In saying that though I really enjoyed the rest of it, I mean the voice acting was a mixed bag, even comical in places but the action was by and large *chefs kiss*. The titular Gundam was for the majority of the show an excellent representation of exactly why Zeon named them 'The White Devil', the thing was fucking terrifying, it was less mecha action in some parts and more Slasher horror.

@@TheBoomerBase hah, yeah sneaking up on and backstabbing a newtype like that shouldn't really be possible from everything we've seen of newtypes over the course of the Gundam franchise. It was very silly.
Yup its not actually the main hero Gundam(the RX-78-2), I'm pretty positive it's the Gundam EX.
It's much the same as the Hero Gundam, but it's specifically made for Ground combat and reconnaissance, which is why the head looks quite a bit different from the Hero Gundam because it has to fit a load of extra sensor equipment. I personally prefer the head on this Gundam, it just looks meaner and was a good choice for what was supposed to be a terrifying unit. Plus it's pretty close to the Gundam ground type which is my favourite Gundam unit from my favourite Gundam show: 08th MS Team.
If you want to watch a similar Gundam show, from the same time period of the Federation and Zeon war on earth, with a much better and far more satisfying story and action that's just as good(the last fight is considered one of the best in the enitre Gundam franchise) I can HIGHLY recommend it.

@@TheBoomerBase As you look more into Gundam, it will help to keep in mind that RFV is not in continuity with the main Universal Century property, that was stated when it was first announced; same applies to things like The Origin and Thunderbolt (two of the more popular examples anyway) - they use the Universal Century setting but are their own isolated works outside of continuity. A LOT of the manga spinoffs are like this too or at least run on the conceit that the events might not be accurate or might have never actually happened...most of anything staring Johnny Ridden is like that. This is usually done to just not have to worry about consistency with decades of material or with staying within the technical limitations of the time period (since a major element of the IP is the pretty rapid improvements in MS engineering, like even the obsolete starting machines in Zeta like the Hi-Zack and the GM II vastly outperform what was being used in the One Year War). None of that is considering all the different alternate universes with no narrative ties to UC- Wing was one of those, so were G Gundam, 00, Iron Blooded Orphans, and the most recent Witch from Mercury, to name a few examples- any of those can be consumed without worrying about a million other shows and spinoffs (they have their own spinoffs too but not the quantity of UC) and make good jumping on points for the collective Gundam IP
So when looking into other mainline UC shows, don't scratch your head too much about if stuff you see in this just doesn't sync with the original 1979 series, 0080, 0083, Zeta, etc. A lot of entries are set in the One Year War, that is to say the time period of the original 1979 show, as sidestories to it. 08th MS Team (1996) for example is a very narrow focused sidestory about a Federation battalion fighting in Southeast Asia, but it's at the very tail end of the war as Zeon has already lost all momentum on Earth and is in process of evacuating back to space where the back stretch of the 1979 show takes place. Similarly 0080 takes place in the final days of the war, in a colony largely away from any of the major battlefield lines. Also happening in the middle of it would be video games like ever-popular The Blue Destiny (focusing on a MS field testing team for the Federation as they get pulled into a very shady project involving a powerful blue MS that seemingly moves with a will of its own) or Rise From the Ashes (focusing on a Federation special forces team fighting in Australia to prevent the release of a bioweapon)
By the by, you did pronounce GM correctly, it's read as "Jim" and they were from the original series. They're a design scaled-down for mass production unit produced from the project data the Gundam, Guncannon, and Guntank were designed in- they were not as durable but significantly lighter, and still more durable, faster, and heavier armed than almost everything Zeon had during the OYW. RFV's design for them is not one of the more well received depictions, there's something kinda uncanny and wrong looking about it (to me it's over detailed and they're not supposed to have monoeyes- GM's are supposed to have binocular eyes under the visors)

Something that really seems off about this, at least to me, as how.. wrong all the Mobile Suits in this show move. They don't move like massive war machines, they move like people in mo-cap suits. No weight, no momentum, it's honestly TOO fluid. Couple that with the lighting and this honest feels much more like Pacific Rim than Gundam. Except PR at least did remember that these are giant robots. Besides the last 5 minutes of the series (which to me is really bad) as a hardcore Gundam fan I really enjoy the series. The one downside of this show for someone like you that is a noob, is that down plays the evil of Zeon in the One Year War. Zeon is literally space Nazis and thanks to them half of the total human population is killed in the first month of the war.

    • @Sevarrius
      @Sevarrius หลายเดือนก่อน +3

I don't know if I'd say it downplays it, it just doesn't have a chance or a reason to touch on it. The literal space nazis are the people at the top of Zeon, most of the rank and file are just soldiers following orders, kind of like actual WWII Germany and all we see are rank and file soldiers.
You do get to see a flash of the reality in the Gundam pilots pretty strong and hateful reaction to Iria Solari when she later tries to talk with him during their final fight...before he does a 180 flip because of newtype feelings magic. I guess the real Gundam was the friends we made along the way?
I interpreted how the Gundam Pilot acted and the things he said as hinting that his mother/parents were killed by Zeon. Who knows, maybe they were casualties of Operation British, that would make someone driven and hateful alright. As a long time UC timeline fan, I thought this show was a very good entry. Is it perfect? No. As you said the human animation and look is very rough and plasticky. It is a time and budgetary limitation. As someone who works in the animation industry I know this all too well. You have to pick your battles when it comes to production. The Unreal Engine can produce much better looking humans, so it's not a limitation of their choice of tools. I mean look on the other side of the things. The warfare, hardware, and mobile suits I thought were depicted very very well. The way they move had weight and impact. The show had some pacing issues, but it never took away from my engagement of the story. Back to the humans, although they moved and looked a little stiff, the characters themselves were interesting enough. I hear some complaining a lot of them were generic. I think they focused on the main character(s), then kept the side characters as, side characters. Gone are the days of 22, or 45 episode seasons. We don't have that time to expand on everything. Overall very good show. Something I'd rewatch again down the line, particularly for the mobile suit scenes.

Just a few things for background:
The Midnighters were a group of Gouf units, not Zakus. They are upgraded units meant to replace the Zaku and have upgraded speed and power, different armor and different weapons. Notably Heat Swords instead of Heat Hawks (axes).
The majority of Gundam stories come from the Universal Century timeline which can be seen when in universe time is refered to as UC0079, etc. After Colony for example, is the Gundam: Wing timeline (taking place in AC195)
The Zeon vs EFF thing basically boils down to Space Nazis more or less. The Principality of Zeon declared independence from Earth on the space colonies (called Sides) and were extremely Militaristic, Fascist, and later became "Racist" in a sense in an attempt to cultivate "New Type" humans who had extrasensory abilities and allowed them to pilot mobile suits at a much higher level.
Zeon is definitely evil as a faction. They killed billions on 3 different "Sides" in space amd nerve gassed whole colonies along with dropping space stations on strategic Earth locations.

NO. Gundam 00. Gundam Seed (don't need Destiny). Gundam After War X. Gundam Unicorn. Build Fighters Try (very fun spin/take on Gundam). Gundam Thunderbolt. Gundam War in the Pocket. Gundam Zeta. 08th MS Team. These are the best of the best. Iron Blooded Orphans is good too, but not the ONLY THING "WORTH WATCHING"... how dare you. On my list its like number 5 or 6... I am bias to Gundam Seed being my fave, followed by 00. Zeta. Unicorn. After War X. IOB. Try Fighters. These are such good ones, oh, and Turn A Gundam - a more fantastical Gundam series... but all great.

I normally HATE Gundam and the anime series it's success spawned. Every series boils down to:
"I'm a child prodigy soldier, but I hate war. Oh and I have a big overpowered mech that is bigger and better than all the other mechs for some reason, but I hate using it in war. Oh and I am sent out to do missions where I mow down enemies in job lots, but I feel bad about it... because war. I'm never in any danger because you know, big overpowered mech that is unstoppable, but the drama isn't if the machine can do the job but if I can... because I'm conflicted.... about war."
Spinning the camera around and showing the Gundam as a Jason from Friday the 13th style monster the other side must view it as was a GREAT idea. My biggest complaint with the execution of that is they did far to many "Oh shit the Gundam is going to shoot me... oh never-mind someone off-screen to the right shot it I'm good now" saves. They also managed to frustrate me by introducing previously mentioned emo child soldier in the last two episodes which I could have done without, I feel it would have been better if they just left the Gundam as a human-less "monster" but overall this was a nice change of pace.
TLDR: Better than it had any right to be given the franchise.

@mafuletrekkie that is a very interesting take on how to view gundam. I can see how that could be quite annoying and cliche if it happens in near all the shows. I defo feel in this they should have made the gundam humanless I agree on that. It was nice just having the gundam be ruthless

Gundam 0080 war in the pocket, gundam 0083 stardust memory, gundam thunderbolt anime and manga. Stick to the universal century timeline it’s the best. If you watch the first gundam watch the movie trilogy rather than the series.

I am a long time GUNDAM fan and this...OMG is the wrost in the UC series. Firstly, the GUNDAM pilot doesn't even have a name. secondly, the first appearance of the GUNDAM was described as a white devil that almost wiped out the entire squad which I assumed the name of white devil comes from killing lots of Zeon MSs and soldiers before the first encounter with the main character. However, the GUNDAM became weaker and weaker that it didn't even live up to its name THE WHITE DEVIL as I kept watching. Lastly, the GUNDAM pilot was killed because of some BS conversations with the main character? As a hardcore fan, every GUNDAM has a sound alert in the cockpit when enemy approaches and he did nothing? Even if the alert fails to work, the GUNDAM pilot is a Newtype, how the hell did he not sense danger? The most rediculous thing is when the main character says I am a Mother just wanna go home to see my family...the GUNDAM pilot stopped attacking....so he never thought about the zeon soldiers he killed might actually have been fathers or brothers that their familes are also waiting for them back home? I bet the scrpit writer knows nothing about GUNDAM and the only thing I like about this series is the CGI and remodeling the MS in great detail...that's all.

@922apocalypse Yeah I was not a fan of him dying to be fair. It felt just for the sake of the plot. The white devil was much more menacing on first contact and his threat felt less and less every time we saw him

This is by far the worst Gundam animation I’ve ever seen, and I give it a negative rating. The dialogue in the animation says that the Zaku saved many lives, but in the original Mobile Suit Gundam 0079, the war initiated by Zeon against the Federation killed nearly 6 billion people. The ironic part is that the Zaku was Zeon’s most advanced killing machine.

@@yueli9984 I think the mech animation was good and looked great in some of the fight scenes. But the human aspect really let it down. Now I have only started watching gundam origin and even for a show that's nearly 10 years old now it looks fantastic
