Michael, Tony and Matt join forces to create a masterful documentary about the 2008 Hasbro Indiana Jones Toyline.
But it is Michael's film making expertise, attention to detail and dedication, that lifts this video production to new heights.
    10/10.

Too young to have experienced Kenner Indiana Jones, and “Too old” (aka pretended I was too cool) for Hasbro Indiana Jones. I never had any of the toys unfortunately. So this is a wonderful look into everything that I missed out on. Had these figures come out in the 90’s I would’ve lost my mind. I ran around the yard with my dad’s old capgun (sans caps) and a jump rope for a lasso singing the Indiana Jones theme to myself. So these toys would’ve seen heavy play, especially with Joes. I can see it now, Indy leading a Joe team to look for some artifact or other to thwart Cobra’s plan.

    • @joevictor53
      @joevictor53 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Kinda the same here. I was 16 when Indy 4 came out and I loved the movie but I just felt I was "too old" and "too cool" for toys at that stage. By the time I realised that you could buy appreciate them as an adult (a year later), they had pretty much all gone and there were just a few random ones available on clearance. Definitely not making that same mistake this year but I'm worried that Disney won't put as much effort into marketing Indy the way they did Star Wars or how Paramount did with Indy last time

Two years ago I made a comment on this video that I still regret, so I erased it as I feel it does not represent who I am or how I feel about your videos. I love your in depth Indy reviews including this one, which I have watched multiple times since it was released. I know it might be weird to still think about a youtube comment I left years ago, but it still bugged me even years later. I'm sorry for that stupid comment. I probably just had a very bad day and just didn't process it right. I just needed to get this out. Thank you for continuing to make great work, Michael!

Fantastic video. Great work. The analysis and detail is what I have come to expect from Retroblasting.
Question: You mention that someone at Hasbro must have been a fan to incorporate the level of detail included in the line. Could the "failure" of this line be one reason why Hasbro does NOT let fans of an IP work on designs for that IP?

This is probably my new most favorite Retroblasting feature, thanks to everyone who worked on it. =) ALSO! I just remembered how I got my figures of Temple of Doom Indy, Short Round, and Thugee Taskmaster several years ago. I was in a toy store in a local mall that sold a lot of bootlegs and I saw a large bin FILLED with loose 2008 Temple of Doom figures being sold dirt cheap. I actually thought they were bootlegs but when I got home I found the date and Hasbro markings on them so they were the genuine deal. If only I knew back then!

*Fun facts about the Colonel Vogel figure:* If you look on the black armband, you can make out a dotted circle that indicates that it was at least designed to be coloured.
Also, in 2009 the body and accessories were reused in the _Marvel Universe_ line's *Invaders* pack for - appropriately - the Red Skull figure, complete with a detailed HYDRA armband.

I never bought any of the 2008 Indiana Jones toys, so this was a great video showcasing the ups and downs of the line. I will say, I'm digging the Temple of Doom figures, and wouldn't mind getting them for my collection. As a kid of the 80s though, the Kenner figures will always be my favorite, and as much as I know it's a rehashed gimmick, I'm a bit excited to see how they handle the Retro Indiana Jones figures, and depending on how they are presented, I may try to get those. As always, another solid video, great job guys!

What a phenomenal in-depth analysis of the toy line. Not some flash in the pan review with jpegs swiped from Google. Each and every figure gets discussed between Michael, Tony and Matt. This is why I return to this channel time and time again. The quality of the content never lets the viewer down. Congrats to all on getting this over the line. I can’t imagine the amount of work that has gone into such a big production. And thank you all for brining it to us. This will be the gold standard of the Hasbro Indy toy line forever more.

    Holy CRAP.
I had no idea this line went as far as it did. I think it must’ve been summer of 2010 when I *first saw* the Indy figures in the tiny toy aisle of my local supermarket. I was delighted to get a decent looking Indy with the idol from Raiders, but didn’t have much interest in a Mutt figure or others from Crystal Skull. I never saw *any* Temple of Doom figures, and would have bought all of them if I had. And that “lost wave”, god dammit, I would have bought any and all of those as well (ok maybe not Bazooka Indy, if I’m honest.)
How frustrating to see Hasbro abandon its own best efforts due to stupid marketing. Second rate product to coincide with a second rate movie, rather than coming in hot with the best product, perhaps marketed *in anticipation* of the new film in the months leading up to its release. They did astounding work on the figures for the *classic and beloved movies* that adult collectors care about, but clearly Hasbro hadn’t figured out who it’s target market actually was.
I’m gonna go look on eBay and see what astounding price point these are selling at today. I’m sure lots of people will be after seeing this video.
God, this irritates me. Hasbro should just re-release the TOD and Lost waves and call it good. I’d buy them all, even the Bazooka Indy.

I had the Indiana Jones cracking whip figure as a small child and loved it as my dad brought me up on IJ and SW, later on my dad found a ridiculous amount of Kenner toys at auction for £12 because it was an antique auction with the wrong demographic. It had the at-at, the falcon, the rebel transport, the at-st and a box with more than half of the Kenner figure line. They are me and my dads family heirlooms which I will love for the rest of my life. Thank you dad, I mention it all time but thank you.

    Michael, Matt, and Tony,
For next year, what figures would you like to see Hasbro release that were not done in 2008?
Would you want Hasbro to keep the same 2008 packaging?
    Lastly, playsets and vehicles?
I always wanted to see the following figures:
    Indy in tweed "professor" suit
    Indy in tuxedo from TOD
    Walter Donovan
    Captain Blumburtt
    Marcus Brody
A 2 pk of the Army Intel guys from Raiders
Lastly, Dan Aykroyd's Weber from TOD... 😆

You'd likely have gotten one of your wishes if a sixth wave had come to fruition. Word was that Donovan was one of six figures (the others were Colonel Dietrich, Belloq in his white suit, Captain Katanga, the German sergeant who fights Indy in the cab of the truck, and a variation of Indy as seen in the comic book series) that were slated for a sixth wave. Deluxe figures would have included Short Round in a mine cart, the motorcycle with sidecar from Last Crusade, young Indy on horseback, the Ark with emerging ghosts, and two more Indy with "trap" sets: a "map trap" and a "soul trap". Vehicles for a year two would have included the flying wing and the Russian duck. A few prototypes of this stuff (Katanga, the German sergeant, comic book Indy, and young Indy on horseback) exist. I've never seen any physical proof of the others though actual prototypes of four of fourteen rumored releases lends credibility to the likelihood that the others were being worked on or would have been worked on as well and that either they didn't make it to the physical prototype stage or those prototypes didn't survive the abandonment of the line's development.

I didn’t buy any of the IJ action figures unfortunately, However I did buy numerous sets from the Lego line, which I suggest you check out because it is seriously one of their greatest LEGO themes to date with an awesome video game as well. Where hasbro fumbled with Indiana Jones, LEGO absolutely nailed it and produced some beautiful play sets and incredible minifigures.

And what did Hasbro do? They released BAD reproductions and lackluster new 3 3/4 “retro” style figures and completely ditch a modern 3 3/4 Indy line that would have benefited from all the advances Hasbro has made for this scale. The Indy equivalent of the Black Series has very impressive sculpts and some very well made figures, BUT they are damn near impossible to find in retail, they are excluding some characters I thought should have been obvious inclusions (Willie, Mula Rom..), and did you want vehicles??? HA!!! Dream on

Just curious, did you that before Hasbro cancel the 2008 Indy line, they were gonna give put out some more basic figures, deluxe figures and vehicles as well. These include: Coronel Dietrich
    Belloq (white suit)
    Walter Donovan
Indiana Jones with Map trap (I’m assuming it was a map room mini play set)
    Indiana Jones with Rocket sled
Indiana Jones with soul trap (assuming it was a Well of Souls mini play set)
    Young Indy with horse
    Short Round with mine cart
(These next two don’t have too much info on them)
??? (Ark I’m guessing) with Ark Ghost
??? (German motorcycle I’m guessing) with side car
    Vehicles:
    Duck Boat
    Flying Wing
These were all that had to do with the basic figure line, not including: the 12 inch figures, Adventure heroes and Mighty Muggs. See some of the things they were planning, I believe the figures that were in the Lost Wave SDCC exclusive pack were originally meant for the canceled wave, seeing as this line features more elements from the Kenner line. I honestly kinda wish they would’ve gone a bit longer to see what this wave could’ve seen

I really hope Hasbro will go deep in their 6” line as they did back in 2008. The only main characters they missed on I believe were Walter Donovan, Sallah, and Marcus Brody from Last Crusade, and Marion and Mac from Crystal Skull.
Unfortunately Hasbro will probably make two or three waves of the 6” line and call it a day, focusing of course on the new movie and the first.

Well made and highly informative, as always. I'd come across the big image of every Hasbro Indy figure before, but figured that most of them were prototypes, as I'd never seen half of them.

I'm probably in the minority here but I really wish that they had produced a Captain Blumburtt figure (tropical service uniform) and some British Indian Soldiers. Perhaps a future project for Marauder maybe?

A great video and content from all parties. Bravo to you at Retroblasting, Analog Toys, and Mr. Kearns.
I have spent the last few months constructing my own Ultimate Raiders Indy from your video and it sits as a nice display piece. I wish the line had more moxy and people flew to it like they had Star Wars. This is a line of missed opportunities and unfulfilled potential. But theres some decent figures and the vehicles are a great last hurrah for Hasbro and their vehicle aversion.
I wish the line had more so we could have the full cast of the films and even the unreleased Marvel comic packs from "The Further Adventures of Indiana Jones" and expansion into stories like "The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles" and "The Fate of Atlantis." But alas.
A fantastic video on all fronts, and brilliantly informative. Bravo.

I've just watched this video and forgotten I purchased most of these figures around 2008ish. I've had them saftley packed away in a box so I went to go check there's only 3 I never got
    Willie Scott
Indiana Jones rope bridge missing sleeve
    German on motor cycle
The play sets never really interested me so I never got those either but the rest I got including the crystal skull throne special offer they did and the talking 12inch Indiana Jones I'll have to look on eBay to see if I can get the missing 3 I never got

I always said Indiana Jones toys never took off because kids play with other kids and everyone would want to be Indy. Star Wars had multiple good guys. GI Joe had multiple good guys. Indy just had Indy.

The paint opps for the figures were awful. This was a line that I could have supported, but it missed a remade Well of the Souls. The San Diego Comic Con exclusive was just too...exclusive. Hard to complete a collection.

I personally love this 2008 toy line but these are not characters and vehicles for kids. The toy construction and options are not the problem. These characters make for a great movie but outside of Indiana Jones , they don't make for great toys for kids. No kid under age 12 wants to play with any characters other than Indiana Jones or Mola Ram. It's why both the Kenner and Hasbro line failed

40:15 I stand corrected...there was a decent Indy figure. This is the part of the video where I'm holding my head down in shame. I'll be heading home after getting off work and dropping my daughter off to school to go into my office/collectibles room to shed some tears for the missing Hasbro Indiana Jones collection. And Indy with the tie was my favourite, from my most loved movie from the trilogy. Hmm, now how much is all this stuff going for on the aftermarket?

With such a deep love of the original three films, I have to admit, seeing this rage of figures and vehicles as an adult years later had me feeling every bit like a kid again... Back when the films came out, my parents could never have afforded to get me these kind of toys, and so I was unaware of the original 80's line, which kinda made it even sweeter to have a fully articulated 3.75" Indiana Jones figure decades later.
I didn't see the bad face sculpt, I didn't see the huge cumbersome holster, or the (scruffy?) trousers, I saw a fantastically colored, highly detailed cool looking action figure of my all time hero. I guess I saw it through the eyes of when I was a kid, and it looked great to me, after all, I wasn't looking for perfection.
Seeing this line of toys scrutinized to within (3.75) inches of its life seems unfair, compared to some action figures, the line looked rushed, compared to others out there, it looked good, to those of us who weren't quite as spoilt, it looked amazing.

This line is a great line that just needed a few more things, i really wanted figures of chattar lal, kazim and maharajah and it would’ve been great to own them and play with them, but i have fun with the figures i own (indy, mola ram, thuggee and slave driver)
I just had a play scenario where indy steals that red dog statue from mola ram so he cant use its magical properties to summon kali, and then the thuggees invade indys house and steal the statue back and return to the temple to preform the ritual to summon kali, and it ends with an epic battle between indiana jones, the thuggees, the slave driver and mola ram and the portal is closed
