The RP has a full frame sensor, so if you value or need a full frame sensor, and fps aren't important to you, then yes, it's the better camera. But most people I know who have bought the R7, including myself, have done so specifically because it is a 32 megapixel APS-C camera. A ton of pixels on subject gets you closer. Crop ability is what it's all about. Reach. I have full frame cameras and love them for landscapes and everyday photography, but when I'm shooting a shy songbird, or a wolf at 120 yards, I need reach. I also need fps.
Great video! Yes, some compelling reasons to buy an RP for portrait shooting and general photography with occasional video, if a person does not need it for fast action or high video specs. When we sold our house the professional realty photographer used an RP with ultra-wide lens and I managed to download the images to check them out. Some great stuff. The RP is great for portrait or static images like realty.

I got that wrong in the video, I was told in the comments of a previous video that it was not, and just assumed that was correct given the price point. I think that makes it Canons cheapest full frame camera AND Canons cheapest weather sealed body.
Thanks for the candid and detailed presentation/review. I am not a professional and I don’t shoot video, and here are my 2 cents adding to your comments: I picked up the RP when it first came out in early 2019 and the R7 a month ago. For all intents and purposes they are the same new price when you take into considerations of the added features such as: IBIS, higher resolution, much improved auto focus, improved menu/operating system, dual cards (if you need it), bigger and commonly used battery, etc. I absolutely agree that RP is the perfect fit for budget minded, general photography, etc. However, the R7 should be considered more suitable for photographers who do wild life photography occasionally. It’s auto focus, higher pixel, and further reach allow you to practise wild life photography without breaking your bank getting the R5 or R6. It’s particularly true if you already owned some of the older lenses such as the EF 70-300mm f4-5.6L. By the way, I love the compact size and light weight of the RP: 17.9oz vs 22.4oz (with battery & SD card, weighted myself). The best camera is the one you can afford without going into financing!
The answer is simple. Get the RP if you do landscape and events and low light performance. Get the R7 if you want speed and do sports and bird photography
You missed something incremental: "Get the R7 if you want speed and do sports and bird photography" + and if you can afford it The R7 is just too expensive especially because its just APS-C! And the budget version, the R10 is too crippled by canon.
Regarding the dial thing, I've seen a lot of people talking about the R7's changes, with only two wheels (top and thumb wheel). As a long-time 7DII user, this is exactly what I've been shooting with for years. No third control like more expensive cameras. The thumb wheel did move from the 7DII, but it seems to be in a better ergonomic position so you only have to move your thumb to the side, not over and down. My principal control when I'm shooting fast in changing light conditions (I shoot concerts) is the shutter speed. I have that mapped to the thumb wheel on the 7DII, and the top dial controlling the aperture. ISO is done through the top dial with a single button-press to change it. I can't imagine much will change with my operations with the R7..........if I ever get the one I ordered.
You are absolutely fantastic in making comparisons between different cameras! It is although a bit to tecnical to me. Since you have made lots of videos on the M50, could you consider making a video for those of us M50-users who are thinking of upgrading to another camera, which kind of user should choose which one of the Canon cameras?
I have an RP, never tried the R7. Yes it's true, the RP is absolutely terrible for capturing fast moving subjects. Even just shooting a model who was sort of slowly dancing around in a dress, it just kept whiffing the autofocus. So between the poor autofocus and the 4 frames per second, forget using it on anything faster than a slow walk. But I really like it for fashion and portrait shooting. The images are nice, and of course the colors are good. I prefer the color out of the RP more than my much more expensive Sony's.
R7 is 40% more expensive than RP on Canon website. That should tell you enough. I have RP and it’s good for what I need. In 5 years I’ll upgrade to R6 III
This is my first time to bump into your content. Great content to be honest, comparing those two cameras. I bought RP couple months ago because I need to replace my old camera. At first, a lot of things were new to me since I'm using 450D as my hobby camera, now I'm enjoying my RP when taking portraits and also my collections. To he honest, it is a great camera, depending on how you use it. Since I'm not taking photos of wild life, I prefer this camera and enjoys it. Yeah, I agree with the words you said in the last part of the video, that we don't need to upgrade too much on the system if we don't upgrade our skillset.
Which DSLR has this thumb wheel what are you talking about RP?I upgraded from a 550D to a R7.And the only thing that was strange at first was a bigger grip. The rear wheel with joystick is new to me, but I also found it convenient. And yes, there are a lot of new things, but also a lot of things that are a lot like my old 550D.And the advantage of the crop sensor is that it can use both lenses designed for it and lenses for full-frame cameras. And I don't think it's right to say that lenses for full-frame cameras aren't suitable for crop sensors or that they don't work well.On the contrary, with the crop factor, the camera will use the middle part of the lens, which is also of better quality. But yes, a crop camera lens doesn't work well on a full-frame camera.
I need the conventional dial since Ihave no thumb on my righthand, but my right index finger joint has been opened so that it functions like a thumb. I think the joystick will prove inconvenient for me.
First time watching your video, and oh man I was hooked. (Partly because I currently have a canon 2000D and looking to upgrade but also your level of energy and enthusiasm towards photography) thank you for a great comparison! I really am swaying towards the r7! Currently having a cropped sensor and still able to take some stunning landscape shots with it I really do like what the r7 has to offer! Thank you for a great comparison!
I like the idea of comparing cameras based on budget. If I use a full frame macro efs lens on the rp vs R7. Will the colors and detail be the same in the pictures?
Great points you bring up. Thank you. As a Canon fan upgrading from an M 50 mkll is difficult. That said the RP is an underrated camera. Seems like the 2nd generation of the R7 will be worth the wait for me.
So my guess is that you are slowly moving away from Canon M system? If that's the case just wanted to say thank you for your thorough coverage of EF-M lenses and systems. It was very informative and enthusiastic and as a M50 MII user I have learned a lot from your videos. But I do understand the move, as Canon R is probably a better system to start building your setup now.
Not at all! I still have lots of videos coming on the M system, it’s just for the channel to grow, I need to cover other cameras as well. As long as there are viewers for M series videos, I plan to keep making them.
Have the RP with 24-240. Love it. I mainly do travel grab shots. It's limitations are not a problem for what I do. Eg I don't do video at all. And that's the point. Horses for courses. This video provides excellent contrasts of features PLUS what it means in terms of subject matter. Now also have R50 with 100-400. Haven't done much with it. It has some better features than the RP. Eg Better focus system and more fps. And the lenses are fully interchangeable! So I've sort of filled some of the RP gaps with the R50 rather than going for an expensive APS-C.
Hi Mark interesting comparison and always a little tricky comparing FF with APSC. For a slightly different perspective I paid about US $1500 in 2005 ( $2100 in 2022 values) for the Canon 20D (still working) and US $ 1700 for the R7 last week so it’s worth just stepping back and admiring how far Canons APSC cameras have come and that they are cheaper than ever. The 20D is an 8megapixel camera with AF and a postage sized LCD thats pretty much it, not that I didn’t get some great images on it but the R7 is well, quite spectacularly better 😀 From a personal perspective, for my use case, I would be picking the R7 over the RP regardless of the price difference. Cheers from NZ 😀👍
Having nearly bought rp before r10, i doubt i regret that choice(i still have preorder on r7). as for trading in m50 with lenses for it (lost way too much on that, as lens trade in is low). got ef-s 55-250 on it atm. used value on m50 have started on 275€ and rp like 700€.
Bummer about the used prices, M50's have been getting premium prices on eBay in the US. Is there any noticeable difference in the quality of the photos from the R10 to the M50? They seem to have an almost identical sensor.
I bought the RP and the R7 at the same time. I returned my RP and got a R10. RP doesn't properly display battery life, and I had issues with the auto focus not working
I understand this video is 2 years old and will probably never recieve a response however its worth a shot! I am an automotive photographer, I shoot both static photos and tracks day photos alike. I currently have the RP however the detail loss and autofocus downfalls are truly my biggest complaint.. For static shoots of cars I love this camera to no end however, I do feel an upgrade is upon me... That being said, stepping back down to a crop sensor camera kind of worries me.. It will be great for track days but not so good in situations like events or shooting rolling car shots as most situations require shooting as wide as possible... This being said I amd currnetly using a Canon M50 for video as I do enjoy making cinematic montages of my shoots and posting them.. The I guess my question here is just looking for your opinion on if I should make the switch? Also does the R7 have the ability to record photos to 1 card and videos to the 2nd card with the dual card slots? Thanks if you manage to see this and respond!
I am a bit confused more frames per second with electronic shutter but less with mechanical shutter but I thought R’s are all mirrors less. So how could they have mechanical shutter???
Rocking the m6 mk2 +22mm (for the 35mm look ofcorse) and sigma 56mm since late 2019, looking for an upgrade to a full frame alongside the 35mm 1.8 and 85mm 2.0. My main concern is the focusing system and obviously looks like the rp is not better than the m6mk2, not sure about the R though.. any experience using the R? I know its better than the rp but will it perform better or on par with the m6mk2 focusing? Should i save and wait for the rp mkii (if it does comes out) or just get the R? R6 above is just to much money for me to fork out comfortably 😑
I’m on the same boat as Hawk Lee. I found a used RP selling for $650 it’s very tempting but not sure if I should continue saving. I also have a M6ii right now
@@myfavoritecrew7920 well I've managed to test the RP (lucky me the 2nd photographer at a paid gig i was in was using it with a adapted sigma 70-200 and canon 24-70 f4) a few days after commenting to Mark. So during the gig We swap gears halfway along the shoot and we both agree and noticed the m6mkii is way better at overall focusing peformance. The RP focusing is nothing bad, its as accurate as it gets with mirrorless no front and back focusing issues unlike dslr. But laggs behind the m6mkii. We use the slow burst 3fps mode on both bodies 56mm(90mm) on the m6mkii and 90mm on his 70-200 sigma both at f2.8, same subject dancing back and fourth left and right about 25-26 continues shots about 5 times. Reviewing back the pics,(over 120 shots) the m6mkii have 95%-90% accurate focus vs 65%-70% on the RP. The RP is good, but not on par with the m6mkii. For iso, RP at 6400 even 12800 is cleaner. Safe to say you can get away with most of the shoots even as high as 12800. With the m6mkii, 12800 is unusable for me, some shots maybe but mostly no. And the bokeh is way apparent vs the apcs m6mkii. Gotta hand it to the fullframe sensor 😂 Dynamic range is just a tad better with the RP, its better but not enough wow factor to justify the peformance vs m6mkii. All i can say is due to the fullframe-ness of RP, the pic it self will turn out better. But for focus speed and performance, the m6mkii owns the RP. I dont mind the slow 3fps speed as long as it can nail every shots but my test proven otherwise. So for me, RP is not a good enough upgrade. Still praying to meet up with a R user so i can test out the focusing peformance though 😬
I do understand that the Mieke adapters are cheap at about $50, but it's cost effective to just buy one adapter, and now your adding more weight (although minimal) and now taking up more room in your bag.
The RP is not "officially" Weather sealed, but still Canon reports it's not particularly vulnerable due to tight assembly fitting and some degree of thought in the dials positioning and design. It HAS some degree of weather sealing. I wouldn't go to Borneo with ant RP ou won't have any problem in a light rain, especially if your lens is weather sealed. I really wish Canon had used the 6D sensor rather then the 6Dmkll: noise and render wise the 6Mp you get are not worth compared to quality of high ISO and image rendering. The 6D is still is among the best sensors canon ever made
I have decided to bite a bullet and actually ordered an RF camera as well. Will keep my M50 for a bit longer as I love the small compact size of it but I was wondering. Now that you have RP and R7 would you be willing to do some tests with older but cheaper EF lenses from L-line? Lenses like 24-105 f/4 are still a great deal and I wonder if they perform better than a kit lens 24-105 f/4-7.1
Mark, I recently discovered your channel. I love it! It is very informative and inspiring. Keep up the great work. I have noticed that your audio quality has improved. Is this because of the Fuji film preamps inside the camera or are you recording audio externally? Thank you Mark. Great channel.
I have used it both ways, in most videos I am recoding into the computer via a usb audio interface, but when I record into camera, you really can’t tell the difference. If you check out my MKE 600 video it has lots of samples and comparisons, used both ways.
Mark, I have one question about the RP if you'll indulge me. I know the RP lacks native image stabilisation, so it essentially relies on the IS of a Canon lens. If I use the RP with a non-IS lens (e.g. the RF 16mm f2.8or the RF 50mm f1.8) the best thing is to use a tripod for every shot. Of course this isn't always possible, so can I still take sharp, unblurred photos hand-holding the RP if I adhere to the focal length rule (e.g. set shutter speed for faster than the lens length (e.g. at least 1/150s for the 50mm) in sufficient light? Thanks again for your patience with my noob questions!
Yes, that will give you sharp images. This is how I shoot all my non-ibis bodies on non-is lenses, you can often even go a bit lower depending on how steady you are, ie 1/100 for a 50mm), just need to experiment.
@@markwiemels Mark, thanks once more for being generous with your time and expertise! Subscribing to your channel and can't wait to see more tips on Canon gear and photography in general!
@@beatzzc1t Not sure what you mean by "dynamic stabilization" - doesn't sound like a Canon thing. All I've heard about is IS on Canon cameras, and the RP does not have it natively (it relies on the IS of the lens AFAIK).
Depending on the focal length you can go the same shutter as focal length on wider angle lens’ like 24 and 35. Once focal length gets to 85mm and beyond I start to double, tripple, quad exc the shutter.
Im looking at moving up from a Canon SL1. The Sl3 was my next choice but with the market moving to mirrorless it seem like I might be better moving to the R series. I use my SL1 casually and a majority of my photographs are taken on my phone. The Sl1 is for vacations and specific outing for taking photographs. So I think the R7 is over kill but the RP is a consideration. Video is important since I make the occasional TH-cam video. I was looing at the M50 and M200. the rolling shutter issue on the R7 sounds serious and I am not sure if Clog is an important item on my list. The two available R7 Lense don't inspire me. I only have a telephoto for my Sl1 so its not like moving to a new lens system would be a huge consideration.
I really love my RP, i was coming from a 550D/600D and it was a HUGE STEP.... all my EF lenses (except a 75-300mm IS USM) perform better on mirrorless as expected. For me the reason to go for the RP was mainly the price and that i dont use(d... fk it^^) video. Well... things changed, i realized wildlife is more interesting after i got the RP (and RF 800 F11) and its very limiting if you want/need more than 1080p60 or 4k 25 fps or 4-5fps in burst. None the less, i dont regret my decision for the RP - The R7 is MUCH TOO EXPENSIVE and the R10 is too limited, especially in buffer and SD card write speed. The Price of the R10 is another thing considering its by far one of the worst APS-C sensors for modern DSLMs. The RP is ok for video (even better for vlogging than R5, R6, R7 etc), but NOT for anything beyond 60 fps. But i have to say... 1080p60 is very good and 4k in manual focus also nice, any other setting is very low bitrate and noticable worse.
Hello. It's like he's new to photography. I want to shoot everything including street, wildlife, bird photography, astro, portrait, landscape. Rp is advantageous for landscapes, but R7 is also advantageous for wildlife. If you had to shoot everything on a single machine, which would you prefer, thank you?
@@markwiemels I understand. So if I buy the R7, will I have a lot of trouble with landscape, architecture and night shots? Is full frame required for these?
The R7 seems like a huge and expensive M6 mark ii with a view finder and minimal upgrades. This APS-C camera would have made more sense retaining the EF-M Mount as an M5 mark ii, or even better, an M6 mark iii without the viewfinder.
Great video Mark! I really appreciate your time putting this together. I am researching a setup for photographing my artwork (acrylic and oil paintings). The RP is looking like a good option for me to go with, especially with all the great full frame lens options available. Would you happen to have a good lens recommendation for my intended use?
I've never seen a dial like the one on the RP before. I'm used to having the thumb dial and Joystick from my 5D mark III and my 90D. I just had to take a day or two to get used to its placement.
Kind of you to say. I think Canon will be releasing at least one, maybe more, cameras before the end of the year, and I expect them to affordable options, so keep an eye out.
I hope for a RP Mk2 and so..... Canon should focus more on the hobbyists, not just the professionals. Canon made a really good job with DSLRs in 2007 up to 2014 at least... affordable entry level, better midclass but still somehow affordable for the more "professional" user and good but super expensive gear as anywhere. Now the entry level DSLM bodies cost already 900$+... without a single lens to use it at all. Thats poor. I remember entry level DSLRs for 300$, brand new! But somehow my paycheck didnt rise 3x as the prices?!
Thanks for a great comparison Mark! I'm an amateur-intermediate photographer resuscitating his camera knowledge with an R7...love it but part of me is planning to buy the RP body for its full-frame landscape/architectural photography goodness...especialy since it takes my EF adaptor but aso all the lenses my R7 does but with wider dimensions (especially the RF 16mm f2.8 STM which has given me great results so far on the R7). Would you recommend the RP specifically for this sort of thing? Thanks!
@@markwiemels Thanks for your response Mark - I hadn't thought of that specific benefit to the lenses (having "essentially two lenses") before you mentioned it. much appreciated!
I love the color tones of Canon cameras and really want the Canon EOS RP. Unfortunately, I was scammed on Amazon with a Nikon camera and lost $680, so I won't be able to buy it for a while. But the RP is my dream camera, and I will definitely buy it someday.
I’m torn between a RP and an R10 coming from a T7i. I mostly hike and do wildlife/landscape and recently started shooting aviation. With the availability of lenses is the RP the better choice? Or is the newer tech the better choice with an adapter? Any advice?
The question is: Will 5fps at best or 1080p60 and 4k25fps hurt you much in wildlife? If so... DONT GO RP... Im using the RP for wildlife and its... well "ok", but forget super slow mo videos or very fast, small birds in flight with video. Its also hard to get THE shot while shooting flying birds at all, but sometimes there is a usable one within the "slow" burst. Im fine with the RP since im doing beside wildlife also night, lightpainting and astrophotography where i just love full frame for its low light capabilities. But nowadays, especially for wildlife, i would get a camera with at least 1080p240 and 4k120 video (but NOT panasonic, very poor video AF)
Hey Mark, is there going to be Canon rp mark 2? Should I wait some time, I hear rumors that Canon is about to release new cameras by the end of the year. Let me know what you think, thanks!
I’m not sure what they will release, but it might be worth holding on. I doubt we will see another sub $1000 full frame camera, I expect it to be more like $1500+
I am so confused between R10 and RP.I need for dental photography with a 60 or 100 mm lens respectively. Not being able to decide the size of the sensor will be an issue if it's for ony close shots and portraits. Please help .
@@markwiemels Yeah, after seeing the release of these new cameras I realized how quickly camera tec advances, so seeing the differences between the 4 year old M50 and the New R7 would help me and probably a bunch of others too in upgrading from the M50
@@sarimkhan.8 ok, I am planning a video covering the best “upgrade” options for M50 owners, in which I will cover a number of cameras that should be considered for a next camera.
I had an RP. It is great for portraits. I tried using it for video, but I would only get 40-60 mins per battery filming at 4k, which was very annoying from a production standpoint. Also it has a crop in 4k, so the low light performance was just OK. The 24-105 f4-7.1 was sooo bad. 35mm1.8 was pretty great, but auto focus is a bit slow by modern standards. I switched to A7iv with 3 Sigma 24-70 and couldn't be happier. The quality of 4k video I get is next-level. Super sharp, even at high ISO. Dynamic range on S-log is amazing. No record limits, dual SD cards, focus assist mapping, way better battery life. The list goes on.
Yeah the RPs battery is just ok for photography, as soon you start 4K video the battery drains not just normally fast, it drains super fast. I also wanted the A7S III or R version, whatever, but its price was 2nd hand and especially new a NO GO. The Mk2 version was too old and outdated for my taste. The RP was in my opinion a good compromise between getting fullframe but for a affordable, nearly fair price. It would be totally fair if not TOO GOOD price if Canon would not have used the cripple-hammer that hard on the RP!
@@harrison00xXx the cripple hammer is real. The battery life would be forgivable if you could charge it while filming, you'd just need an inexpensive PD power bank. It only charges over USB C while switched off, unlike every cellphone and laptop ever made. Heck, even a $5 LED flashlight can charge while running.
@@hugoslavinski1856 i tried that on my Canon M50, but when it came unplugged while filming, the camera died and I had to sell it for parts. I want something that is reliable and has long record times, which the Sony provides over USB charging.
I rented both of these and the R6 Mark II to see if I really needed to upgrade to the Mark II. The R7 is a great camera...but the full frame of the RP and R6 Mark II makes a big difference.
If you need speed, reach and video capability then R7. If you shoot in a somewhat controllable environment like studio or using strobe light and focus mainly on still picture quality then go for RP. But considering the price point shouldn’t you compare R7 to R instead? A used RP is still the best entry to the world of full-frame considering the price.
Hey Mark and Everyone! I'm looking to buy some Canon gear.. but i'm lost between the 6D Mark II, the RP and the R7... I want a camera mostly for photography and almost never for video. I focus most on nature... animals, plants, landscapes & of course family photos. I tend to go manual on most settings, but a good autofocus would be a great add-on to many photos... I dont want to blow my wallet on more expensive options. Any suggestions on which to get? What about lens / lenses? Thank you all has i am struggling to set my mind on this matter...
@@bilbaoserrano Primes: RF 50mm 1.8 RF 35mm 1.8 RF 800mm F11 (wildlife) zooms: RF 70-200L, RF100-400 or 100-500L depending on budget/needs RF 24-105 (L or not) These are probably the most interesting lenses or just going for 2nd hand EF glasses which i really love to with a Meike EF RF Filter Adapter.
I believe the biggest reason to buy the R7 is for birds and wildlife and macro. The raw burst pre-capture and the focus bracketing features along with the 30 frames per second electronic make it the best crop sensor camera out there for these types of shooters.
I cancelled my preorder for R7 after waiting for over a month and seeing new canon RF 'cheap' lenses released that cost £700! I wait for new Canon M50 mark iii which as rumours said will come last quarter if 2022. I just need 4k and reliable AF. My Canon M50 shows even with kit lens, very nice 4k video quality. Shame that they intentionally switched off dual pixel AF for protecting higher priced models. They can't do it with mark iii, as nobody will buy it!
Thanx very much for this indepth comparison video. Much appreciated and needed before I change from DSLR to Mirrorless ... and one at a good price/quality perk.
IMHO, the RP does not hold a candle next to the R7. Much lower continuous shutter speed, no IBIS, shorter reach) make it unsuitable for use as an action or sport camera. There is no excuse for the RP to use a smaller battery than the EOS R or R7, basically its battery is used across the EOS M line.
@@andersistbesser Exactly why it's silly to be comparing them! If you are interested in the R7, you probably aren't interested in the RP. Same the other way around. Apples to oranges. One is a wildlife, sports, action camera, and the other a landscape, portrait, general photography camera.
Hey I have a Rp already and I’m looking to get another camera. I want to add video to my business and I’m torn between the R7 and the R. Which do you think I should go for
R7 for sure, much better video camera than the R. Plus in 4k the R has a crop that make the area of the sensor used smaller that the R7's sensor (from memory). Then you still have the RP for full frame photo.
Best comparison of these two I've seen so far. And I have seen everything that TH-cam has to offer. For my purpose, the RP is the winner and there was an unbeatable offer in Germany: EOS RP body with 24-105mm/4-7.1 for €899. Do you have to think about it for a long time? 😉
I have a the RP but it lacks c log so can you please tell me what can i do in camera to improve the color grading process to get better results in post
On a totally different topic (sorry), I saw a comment from you in another video that was comparing the M6 Mark II, R7 and R10 for video, and I came here to say that I'm very curious on your opinion on how the EF-M mount holds with the newer RF mount systems, specially for photography. Now that you have the R7, I hope you can test it out and bring up this topic when you have the chance :)
I will do this, but most of the advancements with the new cameras is in the video specs. I doubt you would even be able to tell the phots apart in most situations.
Hey brother, M6 is discontinued. So logically M50ii will also be discontinued in an year or so...as soon as it's stick pending with the retailers is over. So don't buy M series. Buy R10 👍 🙏
Rumors sais New Canon M50 mark iii will be available in last quarter of 2022. I think Canon will continue with m mount as it is very compact size and competing with Sony 6000 apsc lineup. I have Canon M50 and I like it's small size. I wait for updated M50 . For small content creators M50 mark iii is all you need: 4k 30fps no crop, HD 120fps, webcam and streaming capacity. With Sigma 16mm 1.4 you can run a TH-cam channel for a fraction of the price of RF set up!
The EOS R is one of the worst EOS R cameras, but considering the R10 and R7 are close to be Nr 2 and 3... i guess its a fair comparison despite the fact they are for completely different audiences (as the RP vs R7^^)
i think canon just lost a chance to dump the 1.6x crop sensor. the IBIS looks great, but i still love my RP. maybe next RP (2?) will have IBIS, i will buy one
Well the R7 is really for the sports and wildlife shooter that wants the crop for that reason. It is strange, for me, handling the crop sensor R7 and it is the largest camera I own, it could easily fit a full frame sensor.
When you connect an ibis camera to a lens with stab, the lens does most of the work. The difference you mostly see will be that the ibis helps keep the horizon stabile, so it mostly does the “roll” part.
@@markwiemels Appreciate the response. I'm a new creator. All my b-roll is iPhone....trying to get a real camera...torn between all the options out there.
@@RobFishYT ibis is really most useful, for video, when using a prime (fixed focal length) lens for low light conditions and getting a blurry background.
@@markwiemels I will probably get one with ibis...will be shooting with prime lenses most of the time. I have a lot of control over distance when framing shots as I film from a kayak. I'm doing ok with an iPhone so far (i mean for a newbie) lol. I was a photography student in high school for two years. The R7 seems nice. I'm looking at Sony in the same price range. Appreciate you channel...will be browsing more of your videos for info.
It's got 6 more mpx but sensor half the size. Thats no benefit.
@@tomd4748 lol. you watched all the wrong youtube videos. The R7 is a monster.
RP offers an optional grip extension.
Full frame for less money is a HUGE plus!
After watching, I’m keeping my RP!
Can you remember what that wide angle lens was ? ( focal length in mm, brand name )

IMPORTANT UPDATE - The RP is weather sealed! I got that wrong in the video, I was told in the comments of a previous video that it was not, and just assumed that was correct given the price point. I think that makes it Canons cheapest full frame camera AND Canons cheapest weather sealed body.
Thanks for the candid and detailed presentation/review. I am not a professional and I don’t shoot video, and here are my 2 cents adding to your comments:
I picked up the RP when it first came out in early 2019 and the R7 a month ago.
Agree.
The answer is simple.
Get the RP if you do landscape and events and low light performance.
Get the R7 if you want speed and do sports and bird photography
You missed something incremental:
"Get the R7 if you want speed and do sports and bird photography" + and if you can afford it
The R7 is just too expensive especially because its just APS-C! And the budget version, the R10 is too crippled by canon.
RP need a Mark II version with 4K 30FPS uncropped video, the only feature missing in this camera :(
Regarding the dial thing, I've seen a lot of people talking about the R7's changes, with only two wheels (top and thumb wheel).
Good luck!
Yes, it's on my list. I have had lots of requests for that video.
Interesting, not my experience with the RP. What kind of lenses do you use that the AF is hunting?
Thanks Mark for your response on my final decision on the RP for Portraits. Thanks.
R7 is 40% more expensive than RP on Canon website. That should tell you enough. I have RP and it’s good for what I need. In 5 years I’ll upgrade to R6 III
Hoping to see comparison between RP and R10 in the future. Both of them are entry-level for full-frame mirrorless, right?
R10 is crop, rp is full frame.
@@markwiemels Ouh my bad for that
I too am torn between the r10 and the rp
I went with the Eos R and very happy with it., I tried R7 but didn't like handling of joystick and wheel, I will buy R6 in future.
Yah, the joystick is a strange one, I am kinda getting use to it now.
It's such a good camera really, so underrated.
Thanks. You can’t go wrong with the R7, it’s an amazing camera.
Duel cards, useful when you want to challenge another photographer. Give him one, keep the other. I'm glad Canon has me covered on that one.
I like the idea of comparing cameras based on budget. If I use a full frame macro efs lens on the rp vs R7. Will the colors and detail be the same in the pictures?
No, you will lose megapixels, and possibly detail.
I'm considering moving up from an older SL1 and I think the RP is probably my destination.
Great points you bring up. Thank you. As a Canon fan upgrading from an M 50 mkll is difficult. That said the RP is an underrated camera. Seems like the 2nd generation of the R7 will be worth the wait for me.
M50 is still a great camera.
Sony a6400, ZV-E10 o Canon RP , better for 50/50 photo/Video ? FoodStyling & Real state?
So my guess is that you are slowly moving away from Canon M system? If that's the case just wanted to say thank you for your thorough coverage of EF-M lenses and systems. It was very informative and enthusiastic and as a M50 MII user I have learned a lot from your videos. But I do understand the move, as Canon R is probably a better system to start building your setup now.
Not at all! I still have lots of videos coming on the M system, it’s just for the channel to grow, I need to cover other cameras as well. As long as there are viewers for M series videos, I plan to keep making them.
@@markwiemels m user here 😭🙏🏽☺️
Have the RP with 24-240.
Yeh, I love the R7 too. I think my greater point here is how underrated the RP is.
@@markwiemels Fair point 😀
Having nearly bought rp before r10, i doubt i regret that choice(i still have preorder on r7). as for trading in m50 with lenses for it (lost way too much on that, as lens trade in is low). got ef-s 55-250 on it atm. used value on m50 have started on 275€ and rp like 700€.
Bummer about the used prices, M50's have been getting premium prices on eBay in the US. Is there any noticeable difference in the quality of the photos from the R10 to the M50? They seem to have an almost identical sensor.
I'm waiting for an R7 and have an M50. Try selling on Facebook instead of taking less than re-sell price from a store.
It have gone up abit in Price since I sold it.
Is the Eos R adapter weather sealed? I’m thinking about coupling my EF 100-400 mk2 to the R7.
The autofocus box changes it's colour when the camera actually starts focusing.. from white to blue
Please, I just want an RP with the video specs of the R7, is that too much to ask for? 😪
A used eos r then is what you are looking for.
@@scottrc85 Thanks for the recommendation, however, the R still lacks the uncropped oversampled 4K and internal 10-Bit C-Log of the R7

You have a pretty good setup right now, I would wait and see what Canon releases in the next 6 months.
Gotta hand it to the fullframe sensor 😂
Dynamic range is just a tad better with the RP, its better but not enough wow factor to justify the peformance vs m6mkii.
The 6D is still is among the best sensors canon ever made
This is really interesting, thanks for the information.
Some of us WANT apsc for small camera body and small lenses. Sadly, currently R7 offers none of those.
I know, it’s huge.
Great video!! So are you going to get a vignette if you use a Tokina 11-20mm ef lens on the Canon RP?
Yes, if it works at all.
Unfortunately I don’t have the older L lenses, it would be a good test to see.
EF-L 24-105 outshines the RF kit lens for photo but for video id say kit lens.
I have a question, is RP or R better for night video? Considering more than anything the issue of ISO in low light conditions due to noise.
R should be better, but I have not tested them.
R7 with EF lenses with a speedbooster... amazing combo to shoot with!
Mark, I recently discovered your channel. I love it! It is very informative and inspiring. Keep up the great work. I have noticed that your audio quality has improved. Is this because of the Fuji film preamps inside the camera or are you recording audio externally? Thank you Mark. Great channel.

@@markwiemels thank you Mark for the quick reply. In your case, do you have it plugged into the fujifilm or into an external device?
I have used it both ways, in most videos I am recoding into the computer via a usb audio interface, but when I record into camera, you really can’t tell the difference. If you check out my MKE 600 video it has lots of samples and comparisons, used both ways.

Between 5d iv and R7 wich better for wedding photo sessions and short clips?? My budget max 1800$
I would get an EOS R and skip both of those cameras.
I believe the RP has dynamic stabilization.
Once focal length gets to 85mm and beyond I start to double, tripple, quad exc the shutter.
what do you recommend for a wedding photographer? Canon EOS RP or R7, i have a Canon Eos 6D mark ii and i want a second body camera
If you're into moments, go for R7, RP is good for portraits and script poses.
R7 Rolling shutter is there for sure, but not as bad as Sony APS-C.
My RP always shut off during video. Finally sold it and debating on the R7 or Sony a7c.
is it because of longer videos like astrophotography and low battery capacity?
Hello. It's like he's new to photography. I want to shoot everything including street, wildlife, bird photography, astro, portrait, landscape. Rp is advantageous for landscapes, but R7 is also advantageous for wildlife. If you had to shoot everything on a single machine, which would you prefer, thank you?
If you need fast autofocus, then I would go with the R7
@@markwiemels I understand. So if I buy the R7, will I have a lot of trouble with landscape, architecture and night shots? Is full frame required for these?
@@merdumgiriz108 no, full frame is not required, you just need the right lenses.

The R7 seems like a huge and expensive M6 mark ii with a view finder and minimal upgrades. This APS-C camera would have made more sense retaining the EF-M Mount as an M5 mark ii, or even better, an M6 mark iii without the viewfinder.
Great video! Will you be doing a video on Eos R5 vs Eos R7? Thank you.
If I can get my hands on an R5.
I hate switching to mirrorless. Can't even see if the polarizer is working :)

Obsessed with your videos now, thanks!!
Might try to save up for an RP 🤔
Fantastic comparison!
I love my RP but I still miss having a joystick which I used to have on my xt2, R7 autofocus does look awesome though…
i paired it with the rf 70 200mm f4, and the auto focus bro.. its like instantaneous.
Thanks!
Yes, its a perfect setup, this means all your full frame lenses essentially become two lenses. They have different fields of view on the R7 vs the RP.
Using FV mode I can control every main setting on the R7 with just the front dial and rear wheel while looking through the viewfinder.
Good tip.
I’m torn between a RP and an R10 coming from a T7i. I mostly hike and do wildlife/landscape and recently started shooting aviation. With the availability of lenses is the RP the better choice? Or is the newer tech the better choice with an adapter? Any advice?
Photo only, RP. If 4k video is important to you, R10. R10 is also better for wild life, but RP for landscape.
Get the RP and it will get you better results.
The question is:
Will 5fps at best or 1080p60 and 4k25fps hurt you much in wildlife?
Rp is weather sealed . Was that just a mistake or is it a different weather sealing

I would lean towards the R10, you don't want a "blurry background" for that anyways, and the autofocus in the r10 will be much better.

Canon says its 5 fps is this true for RP and isn't the RP a full frame camera?
Sorry if im wrong but everywehre i read about the Canon RP they said its weathersealed?
It is, I was wrong.
I switched to A7iv with 3
Sigma 24-70 and couldn't be happier. The quality of 4k video I get is next-level. Super sharp, even at high ISO. Dynamic range on S-log is amazing. No record limits, dual SD cards, focus assist mapping, way better battery life. The list goes on.
This is super info, thanks for sharing.
You know you can put V-Mount battery on your Camera ? You gain on battery but a lot
The R7 is a great camera...but the full frame of the RP and R6 Mark II makes a big difference.
use a native rf lens when using auto focus and you'll get just about the same results on both
If you need speed, reach and video capability then R7.
If you shoot in a somewhat controllable environment like studio or using strobe light and focus mainly on still picture quality then go for RP.
But considering the price point shouldn’t you compare R7 to R instead?
A used RP is still the best entry to the world of full-frame considering the price.
R7 to R would be good, but I can't own all these cameras.
hey Mark, what camera did you use to shoot this video?
Fujifilm x-t3 and x-t4.
RP for sure.
@@markwiemels thanks for the answer! What about lens, which would you recommend?
@@bilbaoserrano I would go for the linked list in the description of this video, should work well for you.
@@bilbaoserrano Primes:
RF 50mm 1.8
RF 35mm 1.8
RF 800mm F11 (wildlife)
zooms:
RF 70-200L, RF100-400 or 100-500L depending on budget/needs
RF 24-105 (L or not)
These are probably the most interesting lenses or just going for 2nd hand EF glasses which i really love to with a Meike EF RF Filter Adapter.
@@harrison00xXx started out with RF 35MM 1.8
Looking great so far! Maybe 800mm next
Thanks for the support
I believe the biggest reason to buy the R7 is for birds and wildlife and macro. The raw burst pre-capture and the focus bracketing features along with the 30 frames per second electronic make it the best crop sensor camera out there for these types of shooters.
Yes, and it's amazing for video too.
Note - the M6 Mark II has all the specs you need and the performance is great. There may or may not be an M50 III, I hope there is.
Canon isn't going to make a Canon M50 III. They pretty much abandoned it, they're focusing on the EOS R series.
Thanx very much for this indepth comparison video. Much appreciated and needed before I change from DSLR to Mirrorless ... and one at a good price/quality perk.
My pleasure! I'm so glad it was helpful! Thanks.
I covered these issues in the video.
The rp wasnever intendet to be a aports camera its a cheap entry full frame for gods sake.
@@andersistbesser Exactly why it's silly to be comparing them! If you are interested in the R7, you probably aren't interested in the RP. Same the other way around. Apples to oranges. One is a wildlife, sports, action camera, and the other a landscape, portrait, general photography camera.
Great video, Mark!! It will help me in some of my reviews 🤣🤣
Thanks! I think I owe you licensing money for the review format anyways!
@@markwiemels haha - I hope it works!!
@@MarkBennettCameraCrisis looks like it so far.
@@markwiemels thank you for replying
Best comparison of these two I've seen so far. And I have seen everything that TH-cam has to offer.
For my purpose, the RP is the winner and there was an unbeatable offer in Germany:
EOS RP body with 24-105mm/4-7.1 for €899.
Do you have to think about it for a long time? 😉
Wow! that is a deal!
What is the maximum capacity in each memory slot ?
I'm not sure, I'm using 256gb cards.
I have a the RP but it lacks c log so can you please tell me what can i do in camera to improve the color grading process to get better results in post

On a totally different topic (sorry),
I saw a comment from you in another video that was comparing the M6 Mark II, R7 and R10 for video, and I came here to say that I'm very curious on your opinion on how the EF-M mount holds with the newer RF mount systems, specially for photography.
Now that you have the R7, I hope you can test it out and bring up this topic when you have the chance :)
I will do this, but most of the advancements with the new cameras is in the video specs. I doubt you would even be able to tell the phots apart in most situations.
@@markwiemels ooo cool, thanks for the reply 🥰
I also had such trouble with auto focus on the RP.
Canon M50 mark 3 will have ef M mount or RF mount ??
They won’t call it M50 if it does have an RF mount, but I don’t know if we will see another EF-M mount camera or not.
Hey brother,
M6 is discontinued.
So logically M50ii will also be discontinued in an year or so...as soon as it's stick pending with the retailers is over.
So don't buy M series. Buy R10 👍
🙏
👍👍👍
Rumors sais New Canon M50 mark iii will be available in last quarter of 2022. I think Canon will continue with m mount as it is very compact size and competing with Sony 6000 apsc lineup. I have Canon M50 and I like it's small size. I wait for updated M50 . For small content creators M50 mark iii is all you need: 4k 30fps no crop, HD 120fps, webcam and streaming capacity. With Sigma 16mm 1.4 you can run a TH-cam channel for a fraction of the price of RF set up!
@@workingwiththelight3119 what you think is correct.
But unfortunately Canon doesn't think so 😊
Can you compare the R7 to EOS R since they are close in price
If I can get my hands on an EOS-R, I will.
I already use it in weddings my R7 and it’s is very good camera with the flash perfect camera i use it with the sigma 18-35 f1.8
Why would they want to dump the APS C sensor? A lot of wildlife and bird shooters have been clamoring for this.
Can vouch that if the R7 was a 24mp FF I would have not even considered it. For me that 33mp crop sensor is a big plus in every way for wildlife.
Great video. As far as I know, RP is weather sealed! Google agrees too!
Yes the rp is weather sealed.
R7 is my very 1st camera after upgrading from mobile phone photography... So far, i dont have issues with handling :-)
Very well explanation...thanks for effort.
You are most welcome!
How does IBIS compare to lens stabilization?
When you connect an ibis camera to a lens with stab, the lens does most of the work. The difference you mostly see will be that the ibis helps keep the horizon stabile, so it mostly does the “roll” part.
Basically, if you use a stabilised lens you won’t see much difference at all.
R7 buyers use it mainly for wildlife and sports which rp can't do so what is the point of this video
Thank you for that in detail comparison ! R7 is significantly sharper
I bought both. RP for travel and landscape. R7 for sports and wildlife.
