The first video after our unplanned hiatus is a Q&A where we tackle some of the more technical questions that viewers have left us in the comments. We appreciate the serious consideration that you guys give the project and we love answering these type of questions, so keep them coming!

Been missing you over the past few weeks glad to see you are on board and things are going well, will you ben showing the trip out of the boat yard, would be awesome of you had footage of the trip sounds like it was quite eventful.
Regarding LED's there is a system of LED's referred to as "Chip On Board" this type of LED gives a continuous strip or light you cannot see the individual light sources, they are thinner than the regular LED strips and you don't need to add layers of diffusers to get the light more even. By the time you are ready for a refit technology is going to have changed dramatically, already the flexible walk on solar panels generate almost as much as the rigid panels and they can be made to fit the shape of the available space, LED's have changed so much in the past 5 years and will change again.
The challenge with technology is always when do you buy because next month something new and better is going to come out.

Thank you for the comment. I have not heard of that type of LED, but as you said technology is changing all the time. I will be posting about the crossing. It is a difficult video to edit, and time has been at a premium recently trying to get the boat fit out with our hotel supplies that we shipped here months ago.
Regen when implemented correctly does work very well. It will output anywhere from 2 to 20 percent of the motors output depending on your sailing speed. You must have a controller that supports the Regen feature.
Thank you for the comment. We do have the controller built in, but we did not put in all the additional required parts. Another viewer commented about tidal flows and currents. I simply do not believe that these are enough to turn the props in most parts of the world. For example the marina that we are in right now as a 4-5 meter tide, but the flows are just not enough.
Thanks for answering my question. I suppose the one addendum I would add to my question about regeneration is that the system would also give you the ability to have electric propulsion too. Also, do the engine start batteries have a dc-dc charger to the house battery bank?
Thank you for the question. Yes, we do have DC-DC charging for the engine start batteries. As the house bank charges, they charge as well. Electric propulsion for a vessel this size is still not really feasible. We would require approximately 225-250KW motors (1 per hull) to duplicate what we have now. Even if you look at silent yachts 80. Their generators are 7x bigger than ours, they carry more diesel than we do, and and still go slower than we can under sail. It is also worth keeping in mind that they can only go max speed for a limited time without turning on their thirsty generators. We can go fast as long is there is wind and generally for free.
I imagine electric propulsion for a boat like yours being more applicable for entering and exiting marinas/moorings where finesse is more important than outright speed. I totally get the K.I.S.S. mentality too though. Your boat already has soo much complexity as it is. I 100% agree that propulsion for distance is still best to be diesel. While I acknowledge that time at anchor is the majority of your time, I would imagine prop regen on a multiday passage would probably negate any potential need to run the genset while in motion? @@sketchtosea3750
You are correct, about regen under passage. Our solar does that for us as well depending on the passage and what systems we have running.
Good to see you are in Japan...sorry to hear of the loss of the instruments. I am assuming they were the navigational instruments. Judging by the questions I don't think most people understand the magnitude of your vessel. You might want to produce an intro which talks very briefly how long and why it took so much effort to design and build. I would like to see some drone video if you choose to share. Enjoy Japan and looking foreword to watching you on our adventures.

I forgot to add a question for another video, more of a general question that the specific technical questions you answered in this video. During your first passage, did the boat live like you expected? Meaning, was moving about the boat, driving the boat, raising and lowering sails, keeping track of lighting, A/C, all systems, coping with motion, and experiencing the boat about what you expected?
Thank you for the question. For the most part yes. Driving the boat was great, it was highly responsive, accelerated well. The sails and all those systems performed as expected and with ease. This weeks video I think will be a few things I would do differently for boat number 2 if I were to start all over again today.
I am happy that you are happy with you boat. She is a big girl that can go fast and she even has a hot tub. What more can you ask for.

Thank you for the comment. So far extremely happy with what wee have thus far. There has been a few things that have been learned that i would incorporate into boat # 2. Those items will come out in a future video.
You mentioned MasterVolt in response to one of the questions you received. Are you able to elaborate on your choice of MasterVolt vs others? Would I be correct in assuming you standardized MV products throughout the boat? I love your channel, and have enjoyed every step you have shared with us. Thank you and best going forward.
Thank you for the comment. With a boat of this size and complexity it made sense to keep as much under one group as possible. In this case it was Navico group. I can't speak for others, but Navico has been great for support both during the build and post departure support. We are still fine tuning the systems onboard.

Great video! So glad to hear an HH owner explain how the whole regeneration hype just doesn’t make financial sense. The value proposition for the dollars spent and added complexity makes to the boat isn’t something most people think about.

Thank you for the comment. Another viewer suggested tidal flows should be sufficient at anchor. I maintain my perspective, lots of places don't have adequate tidal flows/currents to spin the props to make it worth while.
