Epica often uses harsh vocals as the evil voices to Simone's angelic sounds. In this song, it represents the evil pull of addiction, hence the discordance.
"I didn't like the high growl thing" - nobody likes drug addiction and what it can to to your life. So, good... you weren't supposed to like it. Drugs demanding your soul is not a happy thing. Chasing the Dragon is chasing that experience of the initial high for the rest of your life or until recovery if you're lucky.
one of my favorite live performances... and if that were not enough at the end of the song they give us a passage of Black metal ending with that brutal growl...
