    Join us for the final leg of our Atlantic crossing where we encounter heavy weather and rough seas on our Beneteau Oceanis 40. With 600 miles and four days before remaining a large area of high pressure and strong NE trade moves in, accompanied by a very confused sea state. By far the most hectic sail we have ever experienced and well out of our comfort zone.
    Read more about this experience in our blogpost below
    sailingbeaver....
    A couple from Australia and Norway who set sails from Norway on a Beneteau Oceanis 40 in late 2018 to explore the world by sailboat. (Yup, another sailing couple doing the standard route and documenting it on film.)

    Wow, that was intense! I liked how you let the wind and the sea state do most of the talking in this episode. I think it captured the mood onboard

    If you were just another sailing couple you'd be peddling gear, pimping patreon, panhandling for donations and maximizing monetization of your vids. I'm not seeing that so you're the atypical YT sailing couple. Congrats.

      Thankyou sir, well worded I must say. All that pimping and panhandling handling sounds like way to much work so we’ll stick to the sailing instead.

      The guy in the baseball cap needs to be deposited in Bridgetown with the rest of the garbage. Your helmsman needs to learn to feel the boat, stop looking at the waves. Anticipate, typical Brit congratulate each other on achievements in failure and seamanship.

    • @SailingBeaver
      @SailingBeaver  3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Sounds like your a solo sailor there Richard, if that’s how you treat your crew. In our opinion the crew did an excellent job at helming in those conditions. If your attempting to comment on seamanship try something with a little more substance then ‘feel the boat’, then maybe we can actually learn something from you. Btw Aussies mate, not Brits!

    Love the buzz of a good swell. Nice helming. When things get lumpy ‘follow the mast’... when the boat starts to lurch to port - steer to port. Use the mast as an indicator, especially at night. You probably know this anyway with how you were doing - great job.

    • @ian_griffiths
      @ian_griffiths 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I meant to say, when the ‘mast’ lurches to port, steer to port.... and vici versa

    • @SailingBeaver
      @SailingBeaver  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the nice words. I guess we do this but yeah at night it’s tricky to see the instruments so that’s a good idea to follow the mast at night. Cheers.

      Thanks for the info. Just found this. I've no idea about sailing and was wondering what they were steering towards. I'm a flier and you basically do the opposite in a plane to level the wings in the bumps (but you don't fight it too hard - ease your way through). I guess if I was steering that boat I'd end up rolling the thing.

    Hi Guys n’ Girl. I Saw this video trough, an felt very intens about it. I took in companionship with my nephew , his wife and their 2 daughters, the same tour Cap Verde/Mindelo to Babados November 2019, and we had about the same experience the last 4 days out og 19 days. Very heavy wind swirls with heavy rain,- in wich the boad 38food Benetton first, kind of surfed. After about an hour the rain stopped and the wind got a bit down, and very big waves 5-6 m cought up with us. Some crashed down in cockpit, and one smashed so hard at the rear end of the boad, that we got a crack, and began to take water in. We also lost power for some hours before finding the problem. We glued and repaired in morning light, and sawed courage for next swirl. The swirls had a kind of cycle thing,- and went back 2-3 times every Night. Our wind at highest before loosing power mesured 38spm. But in Night swirls was the Wind much higher. We kept calm and all went well. After arrival at George Town /. Babardos yacht club we slept 18 hours, and got drunk for the next 24. Kind of taking pressure I gues . Regards Jens-Otto. Sailing Embla. DK

    You just can’t begin to understand how scary this can be until you’ve done it. We had the same conditions but with a counter current coming in to Isla Mujeres when we lost our steering. Thank God we had an emergency tiller made before we left the US. We didn’t have so far to go fortunately. We literally surfed into Isla. Never been so relieved to put down the anchor! Great video and am looking forward to following your adventures.

    • @SailingBeaver
      @SailingBeaver  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      We change that around depending on our angles and swell/wind to get good speeds and stability. Wing on wing works great for us mate but it does have its limits so on the final day we switched to deep gybes.

    I sailed on a Beneteau 40, what a crappy sailing boat, ato pilot didn't work so we had to hand steer, that boat was all over the place no way to keep it straight, sailboat data gives it a comfort rating of 26,33, I own and sail a Bristol Channel Cutter a 28' boat, it has a comfort rating of 37.20 sails like it's on a rail, much better cruising boat

    Fun video..maybe adding a little more sail would have help to stabilize the boat so it got close to hull speed. I raced a First 40.7 to Hawaii in 40-45 true and in appearance it looked a lot more stable than yours.

    • @SailingBeaver
      @SailingBeaver  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      40-45 is quite windy but our boat on this day was having more problems relating to the sea state rather then wind. Obviously that was dictating sail choice. Cheers for watching 🤙

    Hey guys, nice sail....I dump the main (early) and carry more headsail, ideally twin headsails. It settles the roll, and naturally balances out any tendency to round up.....you would be more comfortable and lose no speed if you just dumped the main.

    • @SailingBeaver
      @SailingBeaver  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks and glad you enjoy. We sometimes use the twin headsails and your right it does completely stop the rounds ups.

    • @pauldeacon7115
      @pauldeacon7115 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes I agree with that comment. Like a wind surfer to lean the sail forward makes you turn downwind. Carry any sail on the mail will bring the weight back and it will be easier to unintentionally round up. But nice one guys and girls. Certainly a trip you won’t forget 🙂

    I reckon that with landfall imminent, you were keen to finish the passage and reluctant to wind away that boomed out genoa a little. We did the same on the last day when crossing to St. Lucia on the ARC in 2018. It is human nature I suppose.

    This makes me think of Shackleton's crossing with Frank Wild in the James Caird, a 22 ft open lifeboat which they had added a crude deck to so they could escape from Elephant Island by making a 800 mile crossing in high seas with only a sextant.

    • @adriansayers7002
      @adriansayers7002 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Three crew and a skipper in a 40 ft centre cockpit - they'd be sat rubbing shoulders and knees? Not very often you take one over the back and that's what wash boards are for. For me a centre cockpit doesn't begin to work till you get past 45ft. depends on how important a centreline double bed is versus room in the cockpit and what type of sailing you do i suppose.

    • @SailingBeaver
      @SailingBeaver  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @friarfox yes on this day a certain type of center cockpit would be nice it also made us appreciate heavier displacement boats more but we are still very happy with this setup. @Adrian your right about the large aft cabin it wouldn’t serve much of a purpose for us. 🙏

    very good video. one of the rare ones that capture the mood and the tension of handling the boat, in high seas and high wind. felt the boat was running too fast and too much sails though, perhaps there was some pressure not to arrive too late. prefer to slow the boat down in high seas and not force her into surfing, slowing helps also to mitigate her breaking out to the side (and then knock down)

  • @Satorisails77
    @Satorisails77 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    With the model named Oceanis you would think she'd handle breaking waves better. Boom dip could pull the rig down with that kind of stress. Looks like you made the best of the situation. Best to avoid inclement weather perhaps.

    • @SailingBeaver
      @SailingBeaver  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Would have to agree with you there. When the wind forecast came in it didn’t look to bad but the sea state and squalls was the issue. We dipped the boom after rolling off the back of a wave loosing too much speed so the next one just got us. Cheers 🤙

    • @Satorisails77
      @Satorisails77 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@SailingBeaver Your boat is really a Med cruiser. Have you considered adding the rigging to allow for a better sail arrangement for winds above 25 knots during passages? The freeboard alone has enough windage to limit control, let alone the fact that your sails are really not useful once fully reefed. A trysail and inner forestay with staysail and storm jib would do you a lot of good. You could set the boom to center while flying loose footed trysail, and furl up the genoa and fly a staysail or storm jib, thus keeping your boat in control and safe from rig failure.

    • @SailingBeaver
      @SailingBeaver  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah it is for sure, does the job offshore but not designed for it I don’t believe. Before departing Norway we installed an inner forestay with a heavy weather jib on a furler and running backs and this helps a lot to stiffen the rig. We don’t have a Trisail but a very small 3rd reef is what we have been using. Many thanks for your informative comment mate 🤙

    Thanks for sharing! Pretty hectic there. And it's hard work to keep the boat upright. In the outskirt of the fjords in west Norway towards the North See I have encounter 35-45 Knot wind with 6 meter steep current waves against the tide in a 35 feet old wooden slow motorboat. It was a pretty "exiting" experience.

    • @SailingBeaver
      @SailingBeaver  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No worries at all. Your right it was quite hectic but no comparison to heavy winds on the west coast of Norway that’s for sure! Always worse with the heavy cold air. Thanks for watching 🙏

    The least you could have done is throw out a line or three to troll for wahoo, tuna, etc. Great promotional for proper sailing in those conditions. Really impressive handling of that vessel. I would venture to say that most would not fully appreciate how challenging that was.

    • @SailingBeaver
      @SailingBeaver  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah for the most part yes. The Hydrovane is the best helmsman but once the breaking waves were creeping up behind we chose to hand steer. Btw your correct about the helm coming loose a couple times, we have bungee which maybe need to be changed.
