Watched helicopters fly back n forth for 3 days looking for a guy who got swept off the rocks.
He had a wife and kids and they watched him float away. They never found him.

@@tribeofjosepht.i.community9977 that's probably why there are so many shipwrecks along the atlantic coast. so much lost commerce. so many lost souls.
sorry - but we'll just disagree. the earth is mapped by inches today. the weather is watched by the second. every inch of the ocean is mapped topographically . then - nobody knew about the gulfstreams or much less where the land masses were. the sexton and compass required more knowledge to use efficiently - but are not nearly as effective and accurate as gps real time positioning down to less than 30 feet world wide.
today we have boats like these that a man and woman can get in and cross the ocean alone. then - there was no way 2 people could operate a boat that would possibly be capable of an ocean crossing.
now - if you're off course - you can tell in a few minutes. then - it took hours to figure out you were hours off course.
technology is not an excuse to surrender knowledge or skill, but it sure makes things a lot easier and more efficient.

It’s an incredible feeling being on a small vessel under 30ft in a big swell. Your stomach drops every time the waves peak, as your ship rolls down and slams into the next set. Ground you used to cover in an hour, now takes many hours. Time feels as if its slowed down and even brave seaworthy men become doubtful and sick. And just when you thought you saw the worst of it, the sea continues to baffle you and gets even worse. It’s amazing how fast the weather can change at sea. You must always respect the ocean and become humble knowing that you’re at her mercy.

I’m a voluntary sea rescuer in the SSRS, Sweden. We were out yesterday in waves that at the most reached probably around 2,5-3m. We lost one rear mirror, 3 wiper blades and on a couple of occasions, water splashed in through the front door. Makes you respect the sea! The alarm that we and two other boats were out on, that the two others who were stationed further north ended up taking care of, was about a sail boat with 3 people onboard. They had gotten stuck in some fishing equipment, so as soon as they were still, the boat aligned with the waves, so you start rolling. When you’re in that state, sea sickness is not far away.
Stay safe out there people, wear your life jacket, and support your local SAR task force - many times it consists of volunteers and is funded on donations entirely!

Experience only enhances ability. These waves are big enough for that crew and that boat to be rightfully careful. When waves break in aft cockpits depending on their angle they can skew a boat around beam to those breaking waves, and that Dan put her on her beam ends faster than the auto pilot can respond. I know , and it ain't comfortable when your house is laying sideways long enough to wonder when she's coming back up. Hats off to these two young sailors sharing their experiences.

Well done guys! A great epic story, Uma's doing your proud repaying all the care and work you've put into her! Watching this video reminded me of the story of Alcock and Brown, the first people to fly across the Atlantic on a route not too different from yours, navigating by compass and stars they only saw the stars 3 times through the mist and cloud on the whole journey, at one point they lost control and nearly crashed, getting so low they could taste the salt spray - fortunately they'd written down the expected angles of the stars in a notebook and 3 sightings was all they needed. Love the titles on your bookshelf :-)! Thank you for sharing your own epic adventure!

At age 9 I and my family crossed the Atlantic from Liverpool to New York enroute to Hamilton Ontario. We were aboard the SS Scythia on her final voyage before being scrapped. She had a permanent port list and once we cleared the Irish sea the weather was just like this. I was seasick for the entire voyage, and for most of my career in the Navy. Now that we have our own boat and live aboard that problem seems to have disappeared.

Two years ago, a 30 something girl from Québec, Canada went the same route, all by herself, in a ROW boat ! Yep, a row boat, a 18 footer with a tiny cabin, with just a compas and a satellite phone. Can you imagine ?? Her family were dead worrying. Asked why she would do it, she only said because no girl have it done before. Period. Incredible.

I have seen waves like those in similar circumstances so I can sympathise with you Kika! But I take two things from your video: The first is to know the value of an internal to the mast halyard!! I have heard too many complaints about the infernal noise that a halyard can make, ruining any chance of that so essential sleep. The second thing is how brilliant a mod was it to replace the companionway door with the perspex ! That proved its value on this voyage with the easy sighting of the cockpit from the comfort of the cabin! I have seen your idea replicated many times since this video! So you're both trendsetters now!
