I just realised that the last segment about me getting fired and quitting from my translation work (at least for now) might have sounded a bit gloomy, but I didn't mean it like that! I think it has been a good change for me and I can always try and get new translation clients if I want to. But right now I want to delve deeper into this video thing! And that wouldn't be possible without all of you watching these videos, so thank you!
You've probably all been replaced by ChatGPT, or something similar. Let's just hope it is something better than Google captions. As one door closes, another one opens...
I watch a lot of sailing ocean crossings, solos, cruising live aboard sailing etc. your boats and your goals are the most unique. And what you do is harder because you seek the cold and the lonely. (10 year US navy veteran, 4 Tran pacific crossings, many patrols from Central America up to Canada. ) I’ve been on the Columbia river, and lots of ocean in between. I will be fishing in Yakutat Alaska in July this year. I wonder if you will be beyond that point by then? I would love to meet you both and see the boat if you are there at the same time.
Sorry to hear your news about your work, I have sent you a small gift. I love the videos very many thanks. I am 80 years old and have terminal cancer, but you videos take my mind off my problems and make me happy, thank you and every best wish for the future from the UK.
Hi Peter Try to act and feel like you have no cancer anymore . First in your mind and spirit, then with your body. And the most important...always happy.
I lived 10 years on a sailboat. Cruised all the seas... Your videos are so interesting, so well filmed, I am watching every second and holding my breath a lot of the time. Thank you for this incredible great adventure!
From a Norwegian to a Finlander, your maritime skills are amazing. Myself born on a windblown island called Hiskjo, Canadian citizen, retired and living in Hoi An Vietnam . . Nothing is impossible, keep it up and cherish your partner.
I’ve watched your videos for years now and will say you take thousands of people to places we will never see and things we will never be able to do. That’s something quite valuable at least to me. I will try to support you guys whenever I can. Hope everyone else will too. Thank you for you work and keep it up !!
That lighthouse is quite a sight isn't it? With the solar panels and the little buildings, bet there's a workshop there. Quite a dream for the ultimate recluse.
Most other sailing videos are around 15-20 minutes and that is about my attention span as they are pretty repetitive, most are based in the Bahamas, your videos are amazing, 43 minutes of documentary style editing, truely professional, bloody awesome!
Greetings from New York City: Maybe this is a blessing. I know Spaniards, Argentinians and the South American area that have began watching your adventures. They love your skiing in areas where no one has tried before. Imagine -SKIING INTHE ANTARCTIC 🧐🧐🧐❤️ Remember, “WHEN ONE DOOR CLOSES, ANOTHER OPENS”.
May 7, 2023. Hello, both of you from Salmon, Idaho USA. I live my boating dreams vicariously through your stories and videos. I love watching each new video you put out. I have never had the opportunity to venture out in the water past the Pacific Coast line. I'm a first-generation American citizen born in the S.F. Bay Area southeast of Napa where you were doing some previous boat repairs. My connection to you comes through my wondering of the adventures my grandfather had in his lifetime traveling the world's oceans as a ship's carpenter in the late 1800's and early 1900's. He sailed out of Glasgow Scotland. I never met him. He died before I was born. I only have a few pages out of a diary he once had, and a few of his woodworking tools. I do feel interestingly connected to the ocean and its adventures, and extremely enjoy hearing and seeing what you are doing on the water. Thank you for producing excellent videos for us to watch! I also love your choices of background music to go with the videos. From a small supporter of yours, Murry Greenlaw
Speaking as someone who knows nothing about sailing, I can see that you are very knowledgeable, experienced and industrious and the challenges you've faced you've dealt with so well. You and Sohvi have overcome so many obstacles together, I think the two of you can face anything. As for the loss of your job, I'm sure you have heard the old adage that "when one door closes, another one opens". You are a very smart intuitive man and you will see and seize the opportunities awaiting you. All the best for the two of you in the next weeks and months. I really enjoy your videos!
Your videography is incredible, and you're sailing in place no one else is covering. The scenery is stunning and the sailing challenging. I'm sure you'll survive without the translation job.
It has been my experience that when one door closes another will open. That's life for most of us. I've watched you for some time now and always look forward to your videos. You are more than capable of creating a new path to follow. You have a vast knowledge of sailing / navigation to tap into. In addition you have a great supportive partner to help you achieve your goals. You are a man of courage and I am certain you will be successful in your journey. Hold fast! Stay the course!
I agree with your planning and description on gybing if you are on the top of the wave is best. The block was probably faulty or worn but I think the problem came with the main sheet ease. It must be eased as the boom comes over to take the pressure off all the fittings and release the power when the boat looses momentum. As all that force goes into the blocks and gooseneck. Otherwise a great video as always well done.
Now is the time to make positive changes and I hope you will grow as a filmmaker. I would love to see more of the wildlife you encounter in the remote areas you travel.
I enjoy your film. When you think of sailboats you think of palm trees and sandy beaches, But you go the route less travel. Keep The faith. and keep recording.
the termination notice is a blessing in disguise! recently stumbled upon your channel and boy am I hooked! and another skill you didn't mention is that you're incredible at fixing things. keep doing this TH-cam thing, it seems to be going great)
Your video, editing and narration skills are amazing! Love it. Hope you link up with Mike row or Les Stroud sometimes. Would make an amazing collaboration
I was thinking of proposing Juho as the Arctic's equivalent to Ansel Adams, Yosemite's renowned art photographer, but Ansel just took pictures. He did not climb, explore, and research the most remote and difficult of mountains, whereas Juho is a polymath who excels in using various tools, arts, crafts, and sports in to explore celebrate, document, and share the wonders of the Arctic.
I think ist's a crazy time to sail in Alaska. Glad they didn't get into some really dangerous situation. They easily could have I think. Then the coast gurad would have had to save them. Why do it is my big question.
She is a beautiful boat. Very slippery hull, well mannered, and the gybe was just about perfect. I’d feel better with a boom brake, too. You guys did very well through the nerve-wracking navigation. It is exhausting. I wish you well on your career transition. I think many people have made the change to a “work at home” environment since the pandemic. The question is now, along with your videography, can you use talents you do have while sailing. “Sailing Delos” would probably be good to ask. Brian Trautman and his wife (who is Swedish) have been on You-Tube for 10 years sailing around the world aboard their 10+ year old Super Maramu ketch. Brian does all the work on the boat. They have a toddler who must be two years old now. As far as experience goes, I think he would be the one to ask.
You have a great way of presenting your story, cool ways to film, and allow us to see places many of us can only dream of visiting - so a BIG thank you for sharing and sincerely all the best
Sorry to hear you are going through a tough time. Please know that your videos are inspirational and that a lot of people need this right now. So thank you for the work you do and all the best at this turning point in your life.
I admire such bravery the two if you exhibit. Watching you two is much like a scripted award winning movie. One minute there's beautiful cinematography, the next, it's edge of your seat drama. Well done you two!!
Nice video, good to see some sailing in less than ideal conditions, and nice navigation skills - it is great when the electronics and spot-on and can assist in that situation.
During a 9 year circumnavigation, I utilized two separate preventer systems. First is a mid boom preventer/ downhaul attached to a mid boom bale leading to the toerail track with a 4/1 block purchase and a jam cleat on the deck end. Either have one setup on each side, or move the preventer after completion of the maneuver. As the boom moves towards the centerline just prior to the jib, control the boom as it passes thru the wind. Then re-prevent on the other side. Always in control comrade. The second preventer system is the typical end of boom preventer with a line leading from the boom end forward to a hawse hole and then leading back to a large cleat . This is in case we dip a pole end in boisterous seas. I just try to take care of the rig as well as possible, it’s a big ocean.
Thanks so much for these videos. Your view has a sense of authenticity, when a thing is broken it is broken no questions, but the world doesn't come to an end. There is a real sense of coherence to your story line which carries me along. You are really lucky to have found Sohvi " she really likes light houses " So nice. Bon Voyage, will be waiting for the next one. Thanks again, Martin, NYC
It's hard to believe that Lumi is the same boat we saw when you found her, she looks amazing. Good luck on your new position, if your video quality has been any kind of barometer, you are going do great things. 🌬🌊⛵
The inside passage, with it's narrow channels and high tidal currents is not for the faint of heart. Have been smacked around pretty good during trips up and down it. If you want to read a good overview of it read "In The Wake of An Alaskan Mailboat". The skipper of that mailboat and the writer of the book are personal friends. You can also read "Cheechakos" and 'This Raw Land". It's all good practice for the Gulf of Alaska ahead. :-D
These people seem really calm and together, and I like how each potentially disastrous situation is taken care of by thinking it through and looking at the camera saying "Well this might get interesting..."
Hi Juho, you sharing about the end of your freelance job was in no way gloomy. I find your channel to be one of the most authentic and non commercialized out there (can’t hear about atlantic greens anymore). Plus a good sense of humor. Was anyway thinking about supporting you on Patreon and am doing it now. Keep the path you will do great.
What an interesting & unique story. I knew Finnish, Danish & Portuguese sailors were good, but to navigate the waterways around Alaska is insane. Very good navigation skills, especially considering there were no markers. And as lots of folks have said already, you do a great job of narration & sharing your story. Keep up the good work, share it on as many Social Media platforms as you can & you'll be able to make a living doing it. Lots of respect for you & look forward to seeing the next ones.
I will be 80 in July 24, and in my life I have found that when ever someone does me a bad turn, it looked bleak at the time but new adventures started each and every time, i just found your channel and binge watchef 'til past my bedtime, live long and prosper x
Your detailed explanations regarding the navigational challenges you face are what bring me back to your videos. The scenery is awesome , as well. You could try looking into translational services for medical centers, possibly. They contract with a company who you make yourself available to during certain times of the day. I used a service called ‘the language line’ many times while working. I don’t know what company owns it, but it is a possibility. I know it made my job doable. Best of luck to you!
Thank you for your exceptional videos. The latest, through that difficult passage was scary. I realise it’s a difficult period for you, but feel confident that your followers will support you. Best Wishes. Ken
You were right, I immediatly thought the traveler and main should have been closer to center before the gybe. I thoroughly enjoy your videos and have been following since your first few videos years ago. Love the new boat.
The oceans and seas are alluring and beautiful. They are completely equal to all who step on to a deck and brave nature at her rawest. Sailing is a wonderful experience and a challenge to those brave enough to venture far from land. I wish you all the very best and the wind always at your back.
Terrific videos. Your drone shots are always outstanding. I have no idea where you go from here, but I have no doubt you will pave a new way. Good luck to both of you.
Hello Juho, Your videos are great, and for sailors and lovers of northern landscapes / adventures, it's absolutely unique, so keep on doing them. And don't worry about your future on YT or as a videographer, if you are documenting your Northwestpassage, it will create a lot of interest, even in nonsailors, i'm Sure!
Wow! Great video! Part One - the sailing proved you and Sophie have nerves of steel. Part Two thank you for sharing about your other jobs. Good luck to you both. I love your channel.
A true sailing channel. Authentic. Btw when in doubt about the gybe and not wanting to go on deck I have in the past, I had children aboard and never regretted this gybe, turned motor on and made the board turn the other way around. Making it tack, waves can be nasty, but it doesn't break things. Just bumpy. Cheers.
You make more sense (articulate) than most native speaking English I know (myself included), video content and production all superb, thanks much in all, fair winds !
Hi Juho, firstly I am thoroughly enjoying catching up with your NW passage adventure, truly special, thank you. I’m 68 now, very rarely sail but a lot of dinghy racing, dayboat sailing and some cruiser (week long journeys) in my youth. Still kayak in good weather! Interested in the gybe problem. I think gear failure can be avoided sometimes, but not always as you outline. We used to ‘wear round’ instead of gybing in heavy weather or when we had a bit of gear that was dodgy? It all seems more dangerous in big boat with big spars and heavier gear but is that an option? In small boats a bad gybe often led to a swim but not broken gear as seems to happen in big boats. Rightly big boat owners get unhappy about that or even the prospect of extra stress on the rigging. Some folk I met thought with skill a gybe could always be achieved but I’m not convinced…. Have a lovely Christmas and New Year. Looking forward to the rest of the adventure. All the best,Sandy
Thank you for showing me a part of the world I otherwise would never get to see. I also admire both of your skills and calmness in situations where I know I would be on the edge of panic. I wish you both all the best!
You are a modern day pioneer, explorer and lover of our beautiful diverse planet. The imagery is unique and beautiful.Thank you for giving us viewers a look into your world.
My sailboat is dry docked currently for repairs but I always enjoy being able to get time on the water sailing with the two of you! I really enjoy your videos...Safe travels😉⛵
Love your videos! Always listen with earbuds. Please pay attention to the beautiful sounds of sailing. I love the wind and waves and birds in your videos.
I would avoid gybing in that heavy of wind, or pull the main in even more. That was pretty unsafe.. I've seen a number of de-mastings from gybes like that in my time racing.
I just realised that the last segment about me getting fired and quitting from my translation work (at least for now) might have sounded a bit gloomy, but I didn't mean it like that! I think it has been a good change for me and I can always try and get new translation clients if I want to. But right now I want to delve deeper into this video thing! Thats nice of you to help them out. I dont get out regularly so I can understand why its nice to get out a little via the computer. Best wishes. .
Hi Peter Try to act and feel like you have no cancer anymore . First in your mind and spirit, then with your body. And the most important...always happy.
Good for you Peter. Best wishes and keep your spirits up. Wish you well

You are doing a great job with the editing of several camera angles and awesome drone shots.
I agree with your planning and description on gybing if you are on the top of the wave is best. The block was probably faulty or worn but I think the problem came with the main sheet ease. During a 9 year circumnavigation, I utilized two separate preventer systems. Either have one setup on each side, or move the preventer after completion of the maneuver. The quality of your video uploads and the shear guts you guy have navigating these waters is amazing - love your videos .. soo inspiring.. thank you 🙏
You make more sense (articulate) than most native speaking English I know (myself included), video content and production all superb, thanks much in all, fair winds !
I am very impressed by your abilty....you are living my dream...best wishes for you both....I think you will succeed at whatever you decide to do.
Love the Arctic sailing with the beautiful snow ❄️ and you two taking to the white slopes ❄️👍🏻🇺🇸🙋🏼♀️
Thank you for showing me a part of the world I otherwise would never get to see. I also admire both of your skills and calmness in situations where I know I would be on the edge of panic. I wish you both all the best!
Now you are ready for the Southern Ocean! The boat is fabulous!
You are a modern day pioneer, explorer and lover of our beautiful diverse planet. The imagery is unique and beautiful.Thank you for giving us viewers a look into your world.
In my opinion, by far this is your best video. The footage and the editing are amazing. Congratulations!!!
Agree. His awareness and description on local water conditions is fascinating.
Real sailors! Thanks for who you are and what you do.
Love following your journey! You are inspiring ❤
As one door closes, another door opens - such is life. Good luck in your new direction, whatever that may be! 🙏
Great editing, camera work, and explanation of the cruising gybe. I will try to remember your instructions. :)
I would avoid gybing in that heavy of wind, or pull the main in even more. That was pretty unsafe.. I've seen a number of de-mastings from gybes like that in my time racing.
After moving to Adak, for a year, I'll never forget my first Williwaw. It was humbling, not to mention I couldn't begin to stand up.
“Willie” who?
