The Original V8 510

  • I bought this 510 and did an engine swap on it in 1972. Initially it was my only car, as well as my daily driver, rally car and autocross car. I sold it in 2000 and later tried to find it hoping to buy it back one day. That day came in 2018 when my cousin Ken, who is an avid automobile collector, found my old 510 for sale. Needless to say, that was a miracle in itself. To be able to get it back and return it close to what it was before I sold it has been quite a journey, but totally worthwhile. Now my wife (who I started dating just before I bought the car in 1972), my life long fellow gearhead Ken, and my kids can reminisce about the past and also build new memories!

    I Love it, I did the same thing with a 1975 280-Z I had painted the day before my Son was born on Feb./16/1995. It got sold by father in law and then My son found it 3 yrs ago and now has it. And she's back on her track. Could use another painting; but she's beautiful. And we still paint for our livings; so we'll get into that ASAP..... THANKS FOR THE STORY. AWESOME.

      Funny thing is that beyond the Tigers, I also had a 510. And you all know that the 240Z block was really just a 510 stretched out by adding 2 more of the same cylinders 510 cylinders.

    If you grew up in California in the 70's, 80's, and 90's these were the cars to have. Old school Datsuns and Toyotas were so easy to tune!!!

      VG30's started showing up in 510 sedans in the mid 80's. clark steppler (JWT) did us one better- he got a VG30DE sedan together in 1990 and it was first-class. good times in those cars...

    The story brought tears. My first Datsun 510 my mom gave me at age 17. I had so much fun with my 510 in the bayarea oakland of course. I had all four wheels off the ground a few times lol...Found it 24 yrs later on the east coast CL and the guy offered it back for 8k and i did not get it. I remember when selling it man i was sad and i missed it dearly. still had dreams of getting it back one day but i wasn't ready. Love your story bruddah.

    I have pictures of your car from a 1982 and 1983 Autocross at Deanza College.
    Loved the Bluebird logo and thought it was the best "Five and Dime" ever.
    I remember it just tearing up the course with racing slicks too !
    Great you got it back and restored it although I liked the light blue metallic color more than the dark.

    I wonder if this is the same 510 that was on display in a tire/brake shop in the Mountain View, CA area In the late 90’s? If so I was there for some work on my Rabbit GTI and couldn’t help but be awestruck by this genius machine And gave it a long look over! it made me want a 510 although that never materialized. It did have me searching TH-cam for V8 510’s just for fun A few years ago. I’ll also admit to driving by that area to see if it was still at the shop on one occasion a handful of years ago only to find the shop gone. Congrats to you for getting your unicorn back!👍🏻👍🏻

    I think that this car was at the De Anza College, Cupertino CA, Annual Autocross?
    I recall one year, after a lap, this car came to the start/finish line really winding up. THEN the transmission exploded!
    Hot pieces of metal everywhere with hot oil. Some people tried to get a suveneeer grabbed a chunk of gear/metal and instantly burned their fingers.
    I think that this was a 215 Buick aluminum V8 from an early 1960's Pontiac Tempest, or Oldsmobile.

    • @speedbuggy5558
      @speedbuggy5558 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ran a 510 back in the day in Pro Rally...
      The rear differentials are surprisingly strong.
      We were contemplating building an open class car powered by a 215 Buick V8.
      The Diff from a 240 / 260Z was larger and stronger and Many people used them in open class.
      There's plenty of 280Z Differentials available and they're more than strong enough for almost anything within reason.
      And there's CV style axles now too, that are quite strong and readily adaptable.
      The Subaru people are in many ways responsible for that.
      The differentials are similar and they run very high horsepower engines with virtually no breakage issues.

    Is that a Ford Windsor small block?

      I think it was that buick/ rover all aluminum 3.5 V8 that could be found in MGB gt V8s and in most rovers or early 60s buicks. Not very powerful but easily bumped to around 300 hp which would be awesome in a 510 but not bend it in half. Which could explain why it's still so straight.

    A Nismo Buick/ rover. Why do people insist on those engines in Dattos. A 302 Ford makes a lot more power, cheaper to maintain and with alloy bits is probably lighter.
    That rockstrainer air filter is killing power. Use a normal 14" air filter.

    • @nicholasagnew2792
      @nicholasagnew2792 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      because even a light 302 would put an extra 100lbs in the front and upset the near perfect weight distribution. The Buick 215 is a really good motor actually, but a 302 would be a good choice

    • @tommurphy4307
      @tommurphy4307 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      neither motor is a good choice for a 510. the newer 510 swaps around here are either Nissan VG/VQ or the GM 3800 series II, which is a great choice as it has a decked block- about 1.0 inches.

      @tommurphy4307 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@nicholasagnew2792 510's are not 'near perfect' regarding weight distribution- they are nose-heavy like most conventional cars. the best thing you can do as a tuner is make some changes to the diff mustache bar and run the heavier and longer R200 differential- it has viscous-damped limited-slip and is absolutely bullet-proof. then you can have 'near perfect' weight distribution. its actually an easy swap- the hard part is finding that diff. has to come from the US-spec 88-89 300ZX turbo. BTW- the gear ratio is 37:10. do it right and use a lift and transmission jack- its a heavy mother to muscle in there....

    You forgot one thing during the restoration; you left that Buick boat anchor in a rare car car. The 4cyl with a hairdryer attached would run circles around that so called v8
