The old ways are the best ways just cut down on the sugar but you definitely can’t beat grandmas baking I still use the old recipes I know them off by heart ❤❤❤❤
Strawberry shortcake and cherry pie certainly hasn't disappeared in the South! My goodness, summer without fresh strawberry shortcake is blasphemous! 😁
Lemon meringue pie is still technically a type of custard pie because it does use egg yolks in the filling for richness. It just doesn't have milk or cream but it does often have a little bit of butter mixed in so there is a little bit of dairy.
Re the mince meat, my grammy always added more chopped apple to the boxed mincemeat in the ‘50’s. I always add both rum and brandy to the same maker’s jarred mincemeat. (But then, i always add both to my pumpkin pies, as well.) And speaking of cookies from the Pillsbury Bake off, Nutmeg Cookie Logs are a family favorite, though i use fresh grated nutmeg, and flame the dark rum i use to flavor the cookie and its frosting, instead of commercial rum flavor. A family favorite still, as are the Peppermint Fudge Filled cookies from the same vintage cookie pamphlet. (Fussy, but delish.)
I love cream cheese brownies. I actually have a cookbook that has a variation on the classic dish that uses ricotta cheese instead and has whole cranberry sauce mixed into the cheese rolls orange zest. The only issue with what recipe is that it uses only 3 tbsp of whole cranberry sauce so I'm left with a mostly full can whole cranberry sauce. Find me a small and can but I've only seen jellied cranberry sauce in the smaller can.
My paternal grandmother died when I was 5 and don't remember much about her and my maternal grandmother gave all my cousins quality desserts but all I got was cheap generic desserts she was a very strict person and i rarely ate at her place seeing my cousins get fancy cakes and pies and all I got was cheap cookies and sorry for rambling but not every grandmother was nice have a great weekend.🤣🇺🇲🤣
Yes, well my paternal grandmother used to tell me she liked boys better than girls. I was one of five girls, we had one brother. Also, you got cookies?! My gma never gave me anything. Not a gift ever. She wasn’t poor either
Typically modern American coffee cakes do not have any coffee in them at all. You have to go back pretty far to find an American coffee cake recipe that actually has coffee in it.

In the 60’s we used brown paper shopping bags for meringues. Parchment paper in home kitchens came later..
