I’d just remember as a child in the 80’s up to the early 90’s when drive-in’s were still wasn’t hard to find and a couple of 50’s-60’s burger joints was still available. The food was in many ways superior than now days and still was reasonably priced around $5.00-$7.00 (at a 50’s-60’s burger joint) for a 1/2 pound bacon cheeseburger with a lot of hot very tasty fries, with a bottomless soda and darned good shakes/malts. Just what a growing young boy needed to stay full for at least an hour before needing a snack before bed time. And since I was growing up at 1 1/2 inches a month I needed the calories and I was still skinny. Those were the good old days when I could eat like that and not have to worry about my weight. If anyone has or knows of a time machine, please let me know. Thanks 😎

A cheap dish I came up with is simple, easy, and quick. For one person: First thing you need is some rice (minute rice is best but any rice will work) and place to get the best deal on a couple of different kinds of rice is Sam’s Club also for instant potatoes. Take 1-2 cups of rice and cook it, you can add some butter to the rice it also helps to keep it from sticking and clumping. before you cover it for extra flavor. (Optional) If you have any bits of meat left warm it a little then cut it up into small pieces you’ll mix it with the cooked rice. Season the rice with salt and pepper (optional garlic powder works well to add some flavor) mix it all together and serve. Another optional ingredient is to add your favorite sauce to the rice. Time is about 5-7 minutes I hope that you will like this cheap yet tasty and filling dish. Feel free to experiment with the recipe if you’re interested. Enjoy your meal 🍽️ 🙂

Go to a restaurant and order a cup of hot tea. Take the teabag and put it in your purse or pocket for later. Squirt some free ketchup into your cup along with some black pepper and pour in the water from the water pitcher. Smash up some of the complimentary soda crackers and add to the tomato broth you just made until it thickens into the consistency of porridge. If you're lucky, your table has a pat of butter along with the salt and pepper you can throw on top. Enjoy your 'breaded tomato' supper.

Hoover stew is one of my go-to between paycheck meals - makes enough to have leftovers for a couple days, plenty of crushed red pepper and hot sauce makes it anything but bland. I'll usually use diced, browned Spam instead of hot dogs, too. Easy, filling, cheap, tasty.

I just do not quite understand, why "cheap" and "depression" ? - most of these meals are basic meals in most cultures of the world, wish some variation of spices, but people still eat them daily, what is so bad on them to be qualified as "cheap" for "hard times" ? no, it is normal usual food
