6:20 I like to interpret Xatu’s stillness as a sense of nihilism. Like it knows the outcome and knows there can be nothing done to alter it, so it just stands there, waiting for the inevitable. I feel this is backed up by its design, with weary eyes that look like they have given up long ago.

I personally assumed that Cubone wore the skulls of their ancestors not just their mothers hence why they all seem to have one.
Cubone is quite literally born with the skull.. As it hatches out of the eggs while already wearing them, the mom does not give their Cubone’s a skull helmet as youreverydaytheorist said. It’s more like it’s a part of them and always will be

Pokémon are first drafted by thinking about what they eat, which is why a lot of the creepy entries pertain to them hunting or somehow consuming something from others people/Pokémon.
I’m not gonna lie, I think Tinkaton hinting Corviknight via baseball is a pretty funny image
Drowzee, Yamask, Froslass, Dusknoir, Duskull, Giratina, Banette and Darkrai have disturbing lore as well.
A lot of pokémon are based on Jepanese lore and yōkai (spirits/ mythical beasts/ creatures from urban legends).
Drowzee/Hypno as well as Munna/Musharna are based on the Baku, a yōkai with a tapir-like body and tiger claws. It is said to eat dreams, particularly bad ones.
Frosless is based on the Yuki-Onna (literally “Snow Woman”). She’s a yōkai that represents the chilly mountain winds. She is said to suck the souls out of men who work in the mountains, leaving their bodies cold.
Banette is an example of a tsukumogami, an object that has gained sentience based on years of care by their owners, as well as being based on a voodoo doll.

Drifloon does not actually kidnap kids, in legends arceus, that child confirms that it was just playing with him and got carried away.
it does. that’s just one instance of it (in legends arceus) but it is common knowledge that in the pokemon universe drifloon take children by the hand and lead them to the afterlife (kidnaps and kills children).

There are so many disturbing Pokémon that I am glad don’t really exist. Shedinja, both a trainer danger and a Pokémon “born” with a defect. Yamask with its many faces. Finally, Hypno the humanoid kidnapper.
To be fair, the whole thing Mimikyu has with being a potential eldritch horror only makes it more endearing to some extent.
I think slowpoke evolution is disturbing as well, the pokemon is slowly being consumed as an evolution !
Pokémon backstories can get pretty dark and gruesome, but just regular Dex entries in general are terrifying.
For a very notorious example, Lampent’s Pokémon X/Omega Ruby dex entry: “The spirits it absorbs fuel its baleful fire. It hangs around hospitals waiting for people to pass on.” And in Pokémon White (one of the two games Lampent first appeared in), the dex entry reads “It arrives near the moment of death and steals spirit from the body.”
Gengar paralyzes people by licking them. Hypno forcibly hypnotizes humans then eats their dreams, darkrai feasts on nightmares, a bunch of the ghost pokemon and dark types are crazy
I think Gothitelle deserves a mention:
Sword: “Gothitelle unleashes psychic energy and shows opponents dreams of the universe’s end. These dreams are apparently ethereal and beautiful.”
Shield: “A criminal who was shown his fate by a Gothitelle went missing that same day and was never seen again.”
Violet: “It gazes at the stars to predict the future. It acts somewhat detached because it has seen the end of all existence.”
I have a feeling whoever wrote these entries might need therapy…

You didn’t mention that Corviknight are also used as transport Pokémon for “Flying Taxis”, meaning that knocking down a transport Corviknight can potentially kill anyone on board.

My friend, you keep asking why these entries are in children's games. Have you never gone camping with your friends as a kid and gathered around the fire telling ghost stories? You never had your mom read you a scary bedtime story? "Why are these in children's games?" For the same reason the Goosebumps series exists, my friend. For the same reason Coraline and Grimm's Fairy Tales are best sellers. We evolved from living in caves and warning our kids of monsters so they don't wander out into a tiger's den, and today, we still crave the excitement of what lurks in the woods.
tbh the creepy pokedex descriptions and shit are only the tip of the iceberg. the actual game plots get really fucked up sometimes

To be fair, with the discovery of the cut pokemon guardia, this mother the cubone dex entry speaks about could have been guardia, not marowak.
Also, the existence of the cut 'mon CONFIRMS the link between the cubone line and kanghaskan.
21:45 wasn't there also one side quest in Ultra Sun and Moon on it, man I remember that side quest giving me shivers

Playing Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire back in the day, the entries for Beautifly and Gorebyss freaked me out. Basically they suck bodily fluids out of other Pokémon.

I only know pokemon based on the Pokemon Go game. I've learned that the names are generally ridiculously straight forward. Which I typically facepalm when I realize how I overcomplicated the pronunciation. My guess mimikyu is pronounced Mimic You.
I thought pokemon was short for Pocket Monsters. So it makes perfect sense why there behavior is so dark.

A small detail, but still kinda messed up, apparently the first Kadabra was just some boi who was so OP with psychic powers that he turned into a broken pokemon. Sounds pretty cool to be a pretty powerful pokemon, but... did you know that was a Franz Kafka reference? At least, I'm pretty sure it is.

In Pokémon Moon, there's also a Drifloon that holds a girl (and at another place a boy, I believe), and there's a story about it in the school. I believe you can see the girl and Drifloon by the school at night.
... Oh yeah - the boy takes/becomes taken by - a Drifloon that you save from those thugs, but later the Drifloon stands in the Big Store and thanks you that they're together again.
(And no I'm not ashamed over liking Pokémon just a tiiiiny bit more than on average ^_^)
I always thought marowak had a faceplate that it developed when it evolved so that would make the actual face or skull I guess inside of all that and therefore smaller depending on how much armor is needed and how thick that faceplate gets I mean it could be the size of the skull that cubone has on it

Hopping onto the “why,” lots of folk tales and cautionary tales are told to children (especially in Asian countries) where there’s a gruesome outcome for the person in the tale. These feels like an extension of that.
when it comes to cubones alot can be explained if you see them as being charmanders whos tails never were lit. The dead mother and eggs are thrown into a graveyard. That started the cubone breed. While cubones dont actually use mommas skulls now, the first ones did as they took one from the graveyard but I do think the weapons are given from partents or they earn them.
Honestly, my Scarlet experience has been mostly glitch free. But that's hilarious. XD

I don’t think spoink even notices that it has to bounce in the same way we don’t notice breathing. We can do it consciously and think about it but it doesn’t hurt, isn’t annoying or monotonous as we usually do it unconsciously
another dark story (not a pokédex entry) is when a cubones mother is murdered and the cubone tries to embrace the dead mother but it’s a ghost, so it just cries. it’s a cutscene but i can’t remember from which game
Confession: I liked Pokemon Violet. I didn't really encounter any glitches while playing. I enjoyed the pokemon in there, the characters were good and I thought the story was a big highlight. I still love the team I had on my play through
Everyone has to remember Pokemon at first wasn't made for kids it was made for adults who watched anime so that's why a lot of dark stuff was put into these Pokedex
