    So what are dairy products?
Dairy products are food produced from the milk of mammals
Butter, cheese, yogurt, sour cream, ice cream, milk, and whey protein are the most common examples of dairy products.
    EGGS ARE NOT DAIRY
Eggs come from chickens and are a bird- therefore are not dairy.
Now let’s look at 6 facts and studies about dairy for your health.
Fact #1. 65-75% of People in the World Are Lactose Intolerant.
    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lactose...
We’ve only been consuming diary for around 7,500 years starting in Northern Europe.
Since modern humans have been around for roughly 200,000 years, we can see that dairy consumption is a relatively new thing to our species.
This is why certain parts of Africa and East Asia are up to 95% lactose intolerant.
    www.sciencedirect.com/science/...
Some of you may develop severe acne while others may just feel a little gassey after consuming dairy.
Fact #2. There’s Lots of Nutrition in Dairy Products
A single cup of milk contains
30% of your RDA in Calcium
24% of your RDA in Vitamin D
26% of you RDA in Riboflavin
And has plenty of potassium, protein, vitamin B12, and various other nutrients your body needs.
    nutritiondata.self.com/facts/d...
There’s no denying that dairy provides a unique source of nutrients important to our body.
Fact #3. Dairy is Associated with Acne
Dairy increases the production mTORC1. This increases the bodies sebum production and sizes of sebaceous glands which increases your risk of acne.
    nutritionandmetabolism.biomed...
    www.karger.com/Article/FullTex...
    www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/arti...
Fact #4. Not All Dairy Seems to Be Equal
Fermented dairy products like yogurt and keifer contain probiotics which are excellent for your gut microbiome.
Also, the quality of the cow’s life and what it’s fed effects the nutrition of the dairy product produced.
Pasture raised grass fed cows have more Omega 3s and have up to 500% more CLA in their products.
    journals.plos.org/plosone/arti...
    www.csuchico.edu/grassfedbeef/...
Not shockingly happy cows leading happy lives produce better dairy products.
Fact #5. There’s A Lot of Sugar Content in Dairy Products
Dairy contains a naturally occurring sugar called lactose that is in EVERY dairy product you consume.
    Fact #6. Dairy’s increases IGF-1
IGF-1 (or Insulin-like Growth Factor), is statistically increased from the consumption of dairy.
    www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/arti...
IGF-1 production increases your risk of acne and developing cancer.
    www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/1...
That being said, not all IGF-1 is bad.
For instance, it has clear benefits to those of you trying to build muscle and gain strength.
    www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/artic...
Why are there lots of recent studies out there praising dairy?
    Dalla dolla bill yall
The diary industry alone spent 6.4 million dollars lobbying last year.
    Food for thought.
    Is Dairy Bad for You?
    It depends on the person.
If you’re lactose intolerant, suffer with acne, or have any reason you think your body doesn’t process dairy perfectly - I would avoid it.
However, it if you really enjoy it as a source of nutrition in your diet, and don’t suffer from the side effects.
    It’s ok to have.
Which leads to the next question…
Do you need dairy in your diet?
    Absolutely not.
While diary does have lots of important nutrition like calcium, protein, and Vitamin B12, you can easily get those from other sources.
Leafy greens, lean meats, and whole foods have all those nutrients WITHOUT all the sugar or hormone increases dairy.
I personally don’t consume dairy for this reason.
Does Dairy Help You Lose Weight?
    No.
Weight loss is about having two things working correctly.
Eating the Right Amount of Calories AND Having Properly Functioning Hormones.
Dairy provides no advantage to losing weight and if you have an intolerance could impede some weight loss progress.
What are the best kinds of dairy to consume?
If you’re going to get your dairy on, Low-fat unflavored greek yogurt, keifer, and grass fed whey protein are the best.
If you’re going to drink milk, make sure it’s organic.
What kind of dairy should you never consume?
    Anything non-organic I’d avoid.
Because dairy is already shown to raise IGF-1, avoiding any extra chemicals pumped into cows is a good idea.

That's what I used to think! But it turns out almond milk has very little protein, contains only a tiny amount of actual almonds, and is basically almond flavored water with added vitamins. You'd be better off getting those vitamins from fresh foods. But it's true that it can be one of the easiest-to-fibd alternatives to milk and soymilk. Try looking for Hempmilk or Flaxmilk, which at least contain added pea protein.

Can you do a video on seafood? I didn't eat any as a child until I was around 12 and my mother started trying to force me to eat it, but I would get really bad stomach and intestinal issues so she stopped. This is something that still bothers me as an adult. What's worse is that no one believes that I have a seafood (fish really) intolerance because it's not outward. I am so sensitive that I'll have stomach problems even if pans were shared, though. It would be great to have a video I could just point people to. Lol

I had an allergy test last year and it came up empty and I wasn't allergic to anything but every time I have white fish (I can have salmon and tuna but I think it's because I don't eat it that often) and especially shrimps and prawns, I feel sick like I feel uneasy and I feel my insides burning like I'm going to puke but I don't. This happened a few times and I thought it was because the food was unhygienic but then I figured it was because of my asthma because if you look up triggers for asthma it's excessive dairy and/or seafood.

As a nutritionist I must say yes, dairy has lots of calcium, but is also associated with lots of calcium LOSS because it is acidic for our bodies. The more dairy you eat, the more your body needs to get calcium out of your bones to balance the acidity. So it's not always about the amount of minerals and vitamins but also about other circumstances in your body and how they are absorbed. 😌

Calorie in < Calorie out. As long as you know your thermodynamics its simple math.
Other than the fact that our bodies are not a Bunsen Burner.
I never really quite understood why such a vast subject, where hormones and the microbiome in our gut is working with such amazing biological and chemical processes, would ever be boiled down to the bastardisation that is "Calories in vs Calories out".
I really do like your videos, but the problem of calories is so much more than people just being "bad at counting" (as you said in your video on losing weight without it). Please do a film on where calories come from, how it is used in our bodies and how it is measured (and how poorly the accuracy is). I would also really like to hear your thoughts on all the different precesses working together in satiety/hunger-balance.
    Keep up the good work!

I'd love to see a video about carbs- going more in depth about what kind of carbs are good for you, how to avoid bad ones while also avoiding sugar, etc!
In the meantime, I'll be experimenting with switching the milk I drink to fully organic and seeing if that makes a difference in acne or if I should lean toward cutting it altogether!!

I have acne for 9 years now. I did cut out dairy for 3 months and my skin did NOT get better. I also had an accutane therapie which didn't make it disapear but helped out. Cutting out dairy only made it harder for me to get my calories and protein in. So its not a factor for everyone

Yo thanks for your input! I consume about 3 big glasses of milk everyday, and I used to have worse acne in middle school. Now I'm in highschool and my acne is considerably better than it was before, but my milk consumption, if anything, has increased. I honestly think sleep and stress are bigger factors in acne than milk

It all just depends on the person. Being intolerant to milk is technically an allergy so you must not have it. I on the other hand do to an extent. I’m fine if I eat a little cheese or yogurt here and there. But milk usually gives me stomach cramps. I didn’t really notice a difference in my skin because of it though. But it also gave me really bad menstrual cramps which actually COMPLETELY went away once I stopped drinking milk. I should go back to not having any dairy (I tried ) but cheese is really good lol

I've had acne for 12 years. I cut out dairy, which helped IMMENSELY. A year i stopped eating red meat and pork, and that seemed to put the last nail in my acne's coffin. I get frustrated when doctors say your diet has nothing to do with your skin - all of our organs depend on each other, why would skin be any different?

What made you decide to walk away from your father’s Baskin-Robbins empire?
When my uncle, Burt Baskin, died of a heart attack at the age of 54, I asked my dad if he thought there could be any connection between his death and the amount of ice cream he would eat. (He was a very big man who ate a LOT of ice cream.) My dad said, “No, his ticker just got tired and stopped working.” I could understand why my father would not want even to consider the possibility that there might be a connection between ice cream and heart disease. He had by that time manufactured and sold more ice cream than anyone in the history of the planet. But I felt a responsibility to look into it. And I came to the conclusion that ice cream, which is full of saturated dairy fats and sugar, was indeed linked to heart disease.
An ice cream cone isn’t going to kill anyone, but the more you eat, the more likely you are to have heart disease, diabetes, and many other problems. If you’re in the ice cream business, you want people to eat a lot. That’s the business model. And I didn’t want to make my living selling a product that might be undermining anyone’s health. Also, I visited the large commercial dairies where Baskin-Robbins got its dairy products, and I saw how the cows were treated. It broke my heart to see them treated so poorly. I found the idea of profiting from such cruelty to be appalling.
You wrote your first book, Diet for a New America, in 1987. What has changed since then?
There is a lot more awareness now that animals in factory farms and feedlots are routinely subjected to horrible conditions. And a lot more people are standing in opposition to this systematic cruelty. And there is also a lot more awareness about the connection between industrial meat production, greenhouse gas emissions, and the destabilization of our climate.

His explanation about growth hormones is at least wonky, since growth hormones don't cause cancer, but merely accelerate the growth of existing tumors. His claim that dairy isn't useful for losing weight (without any argument or proof) is wrong. For once, there are studies out there that do at least show a correlation of higher milk consumption (no specific type) and a lower body weight. Also, partially derived from personal experience, nothing fills you longer and with fewer calories than casein products (any dairy product that isn't just whey), and it doesn't induce food coma. It helped me to effortlessly lose weight without any kind of hunger.

They each have advantages, but also drawbacks. Soymilk has been shown to negatively affect hormone levels and has other negative effects, but has a good amount of protein. Cashew, almond, and coconut milk only contain tiny amounts of the foods they're named after, meaning they lack a ton of the benefits of those foods, and are mostly water with added vitamins. But they can be low-calorie, if that's a concern, and also can be low-sugar. A perfect dairy alternative hasn't been invented yet, but you can get those nutrients from other foods like Kefir (contains less than 1% dairy but has a ton of protein and natural probiotics) and various fruits and veggies. Some dairy intolerant people find they can eat greek yogurt, which can be high in protein and low in sugar.

Storm G, soy milk does contain phytoestrogens which can be found in a number of plant cells, but that shouldn't be a reason not to drink soy milk as opposed to dairy. phytoestrogens aren't the same as regular estrogens and are processed entirely differently by the human body. do you know what actually does cause significant changes to hormonal balance? dairy... obviously...

Then after he moved from the Netherlands to Japan, he stopped having gas stomach due to cut off dairy products like cheese and milk. So I suggest people to really experiment if they are lactose-intolerant or not. Sometimes people don't even notice they are until they try different diet.

Philson The nutrients in dairy are meant for a baby calf to grow into a 1000+ pound cow.
Humans are the only mammal that drinks another mammal's breast milk- and humans are the only mammal to drink past the age where weaning becomes unnecessary.
You're more liable to get your nutrients from drinking human breast milk if anything.
Since that's what you're meant to drink.
If cow milk is baby cow growth food, transforming 100 pounds into 1000+pounds. You've got to wonder how all that stuff will affect the human body. You're not trying to gain 1000 pounds I imagine.

Yes, same!!! In my country (a really small one) we have like really good milk, the cows are feed with the best hay and then the milk is processed how it should be. Of course the milk that is being sold in markets is just some fat and some oils (that are the main problem), but we have other options here. The actual good dairy products that my family buy are A LOT more expensive. I tried not to consume dairy, but for me is really important to have this protein and fat (calcium too) in my sistem. I tried and I will try though other options.

I went vegan and my skin became crystal clear , unlike when I was vegetarian for two years and I still had bad acne .

I’m approaching 60, fineboned, fair-skinned, post-menopausal - which means I have to take care to avoid osteoporosis. I ran my food intake through a calcium meter in the website of the Osteoporosis Foundation. I’m getting half the three-quarters the calcium I should be ingesting! So I looked more closely at my foods. Broccoli has 120mg Ca per cupful, cooked - milk and yogurt run at 240! Almonds, 75mg. Many veggies: 20mg/cupful. I can’t eat legumes as they catalyze horrific migraines - but I looked them up out of curiosity. 1 cup cooked black beans: 46.4mg of calcium. One ounce of hard cheese provides 240mg.
At my age, I should be getting 1200-1500mg calcium/day. That would be 10 cups of cooked broccoli or about 24 cups of cooked beans.
I’ve been trying a low-histamine diet as migraine prophylaxis, which cut out dairy products.
I’d been pretty smug, given my high intake of leafy greens and seeds. I’ll continue eating them - but I’ll grating hard cheese over them.
I’m still having migraines, so clearly dairy was not a trigger.
I’m fully lactose-tolerant and come of a long line of ancestors for whom dairy products were dietary staples. And my biomarkers are all pretty darned good, despite or maybe because of an ordinarily high intake of dairy foods.

Forgive me if this has been mentioned in other comments, but many of the nutrients you listed are ADDED to the milk. You could add vitamin D to water and say water is packed with nutrients. It's also a bit misleading because they'll add vitamin D to skim milk, and you need fat to absorb vitamin D, so you're not actually receiving any of that nutrition when you drink it. Corn-fed cows are also supplemented with B12 because otherwise only milk from grass-fed cows would have B12. That's because the B12 is actually produced by the soil bacteria consumed by the cows when they eat grass, not by the cows themselves.

There's probably no diet that is best for everyone. It's more important to consume what is best for you. You pretty much have to discover that for yourself, but a vegan diet means that you will need to work a little harder on covering all your nutritional bases, e.g. getting all the protein, minerals, and vitamins you need and avoiding a big deficit, e.g. in things like iron or vitamin B12.
It's basically just easier to cover your nutritional needs if you aren't vegan but there's nothing wrong with a vegan diet so long as you get what your body requires
