    I think the last point can still be debated. I've tried strict diets in the past and failed every time (as have many of my family members), but last year I took the more gradual approach and now I've lost over fifty pounds and I have gained a healthy lifestyle... I know that's anecdotal, but I hope that people watching this remember that the best weightloss approach is always the one that suits you best *personally*. What works for the majority of people in a study, might not work for certain individuals and I wouldn't want people to get discouraged thinking that they shouldn't even bother if they can't handle a strict diet right away.

    • @Neocasko
      @Neocasko 7 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      I agree. It's definitely debatable. Everyone is different and will react different. What works for one may not work with others.

    • @andreainzaghi7373
      @andreainzaghi7373 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      the last point is wrong. What are they talking about? if you are obese you can lose more than 2 pounds per week, if you are just overweight it is inevitable that if you lose more than that you are losing muscle and bones. Besides, you do not measure diet results after one year but after 2-3 years, and not only in terms of lose weight but also in terms of healthy liver, healthy kidneys. Of course you need an aggressive approach if you are just obese and you do not care about preserving your strength.

      Having too big of a calorie deficit can damage your metabolism and also make it more likely you will lose muscle while you are losing fat. Something like a 20% calorie deficit should be ok though, just make sure to get plenty of protein while losing fat to maintain your muscle and lifting weights while you lose fat is very helpful for this also.

    • @ahobbit1273
      @ahobbit1273 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yeah, I find that the more “‘militant” the diet, the easier it is to fail/quit. With the “slow and steady” approach, it’s easier to make small changes over time, so it’s therefore easier to build habits and stick with them in the long run.

      There's actually conflicting evidence on the "pros" of eating 6 meals a day. For instance, in this study they found that going from 3 meals a day to 6 meals a day actually increased hunger and cravings: www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23404961
      Meal frequency really comes down to what works best for you. I'm sure that schedules play just as much of a factor in personal diet success as genetics :P

      Is eating only when you feel hungry good? I usually eat only because I feel like I need to but when I eat when I'm hungry I tend to lose weight. I am diabetic too (I can control my blood sugar better when I eat when I'm hungry).

    How to break a weight loss plateau? Nice videos by the way!

    • @PictureFit
      @PictureFit 8 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      Reconsider what you're eating. You might have hit a plateau because your body demands have come in line with your energy consumption. It might be as easy as changing a few things on your plate to skipping a snack or two.

      Or take a week off the diet to kinda trick your body. That has helped me and some other people i´ve talked too!^

    • @TheHealthNerdTV
      @TheHealthNerdTV  8 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      I use a 4 step process to get clients over plateaus:
      #1. Check overall calorie intake. Diligent measuring and tracking for a week.
      #2. Try resistance training 3x a week (helps prevent the down-regulation of metabolism
      #3. If those two are in check, do a diet break. Meaning take 3 days off hard core dieting.
      #4. If all of that fails, it's time to check in with a doctor. Get blood work down and take a look under the hood.

    What about people claiming that diets such as low carb permanently damaging people's metabolic systems or for example contestants on the biggest loser gaining back what they lost and often times more because of damaged metabolic systems? I'm just curious

      A lot of contestants on The Biggest Loser are forced to suffer from something called EDNOS (Eating Disorder Not Otherwise Specified). They gain back the weight because none of the changes they make on the ranch are reasonable for an everyday life. On the ranch, they spend all day working out and eating very little. In real life, we have jobs, families, school, and things to do. They don't teach lifestyle changes, they teach "Push until you break" which is no good. That's why one of their trainers left, she couldn't stand behind training people in such horrible ways. My mother was a fitness instructor for about ten years and says that one of the biggest mistakes that people on The Biggest Loser and people in real life make is that they don't eat nearly enough. When you exercise, you have to eat back all of those calories because your resting metabolism is much higher. At her most fit, she was eating roughly 3,000 calories a day. On The Biggest Loser, they eat tiny portions and work until they faint, meaning their bodies assume they're starving (thus causing that mentioned metabolic damage). Because they're already obese, few people realise how unhealthy it is because they're losing weight. A video on eating disorders explained it perfectly, "When you're already thin and you starve, people call you crazy. When you're fat and you starve, they praise you." As for low carb diets themselves, I can't say I know too much about them since I've never followed one strictly, but I do avoid a lot of wheat because it gives me blood sugar spikes. As for the carbs in vegetables, fruits, and grains like oats and barley, I say eat them and exercise. I don't personally advocate for diets that have you remove a specific food group or only eat one in particular (ex. The Atkins diet) but you'd have to find someone that knew more about the world of fad diets.

    • @Dotalol123
      @Dotalol123 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well here is harsh truth and the news flash, "diet" is not a temporary thing, no matter how you loose your weight, if you go back to your old ways before the diet, weight will come back, unfortunately faster than it took time to loose it. So you gotta change your lifestyle and see food only as a fuel for your body, if you pig out and base 90% of your nutrition on "take away" food, you will eventualy turn into that "pig"
      Im sorry if im being harsh but this is the truth, find yourself other enjoyment that is not a piece of pizza, i know its hard but its your choice how its gonna be, dont let food control your life.

    • @sebastianlugo5781
      @sebastianlugo5781 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Hey, four pounds in a month is still something! Consider: are you gaining muscle? Muscle weights more than fat with the same volume, that could potentially be the culprit. And make sure you're getting enough sleep and lower your stress levels, a lack of sleep or excess of stress can make you keep or gain weight.

    These are the kinds of videos I love to see. Focusing on educating people on what works and what doesn't by appealing to their intelligence and making it easy to understand for those who aren't as educated. I've seen plenty of channels that only tell people to do certain things and to not do certain things with absolutely no explanation why other than it does(n't) work.
    Once your channel grows more, I hope we'll be able to see it evolve and delve a little deeper into the actual science. :)

    Last year I lost 30 lbs quickly and hit a weight loss plateau, i stayed there for 6 months (despite constantly dieting and exercising) and finally gave up on losing weight. I then gained 50 pounds (+20 from starting weight), when I decided to try to lose weight again. This time I did it slowly, and again, at the 30lb mark I hit a plateau. So for me, it doesn't matter how fast or slow i go. Just that I take a diet break to break my plateau when I hit that mark. After I figured that out, I'm back on track to lose more weight.

    Recovering from a weight loss stall and I can tell you that it IS hard to keep on keeping on when the damned scale refuses to move! With 57 pounds down and 138 more to go, I know that chipping away at it 1/2 a pound a week is going to make it difficult to keep motivated. Until I hit Onederland(being under 200 pounds) I am going to TRY to drop as much as I can, as fast as I can. Now that I have a better understanding of how to do this safely, I'm running with scissors.

    Losing more than 2lbs a week may be healthy if you have enough weight to lose, however I like to stick to 2-3% body fat%/week over 20% and 1-2% body fat%/week there under. Crash diets also slow your metabolic rate decreasing your BMR or TDE which requires you to further cut calories or increase activity levels much higher than you would if you cut the weight more slowly. Slow weight loss isn't recommended only because it's easier, but because it saves more lean tissue and preserves the highest metabolic rate. A diet should have you eating as much food as you can while still losing weight, not barely eating anything just to save a few pounds 2 months faster. You have your whole life to live healthy no need to crash it out in 5 months and sit on a 12oo calorie maintenance for the rest of your life when you can achieve the goals slower but maintain a higher daily allowance.
    Just my 2c

  • @KommentarSpaltenKrieger

    it is really encouraging that half of the rules floating around can be ignored (at least according to the most recent understanding of the matter). If I have a caloric deficit, I will lose weight. If I eat balanced meals, I will gain health. If I exercise, both weight loss and health gains go up a bit. Everything else that is recommended (cut carbs/fat/this/that, eat then/not then) is either controversial, unimportant or both. That's good. What I eat precisely is only relevant with respect to getting all nutrients and with respect to helping me achieve my caloric goals (i.e. satiety and stuff).

    Good luck eating healthy when your family does nothing bit cook bad food 😂. Your family meals hugely affect your weight. If you are in a polynesian family, good luck losing weight. When you lose weight polynesian families complain that you're too skinny and then stuff you like a Turkey. Then when you start a healthy diet, your family does nothing but cook terribly good food. Then boom goes the diet 😂😂

    I disagree with the aggressive diet thing, people should set reasonable expectations and set goals further out. I lost 40 lbs this way and it took me 18 months, I've kept it off. Studies show that the longer and more consistent amount of time you spend making changes the more likely they'll stick. Granted if I could change anything about how I went about it, it'd be that I'd have gone more keto.

    Please stop with the baby geckos, I'm trying to lose weight and I've been able to cut down and I'm now only eating only 4 baby geckos a week, if too many are born, I'm afraid I'll just be tempted to eat the excess.

    Thank you for this great video. I know there are a lot of people who will debate about the last one. I think it come from the "change your lifestyle' talk... and I do believe that to not put weight back on you have to change your lifestyle, so the crazy diets mentioned are not good because those are not sustainable. However the only way I have ever lost weight was by being militant about caloric intake. As a wellness coach for 14 years, I can tell you when you see the weight loss happen it is so motivating! Losing fast is very important so people do not give up.

    The study about saturated fat and health disease changes the subject and has zero to do with what makes people fat. This video keeps changing the subject. Weird.

    Of course if you cut your calories back further you’re going to lose more weight that’s go’s for any living mammal , and in certain life threatening situations it makes sense what with the diabetes crisis these days ..
    However I wouldn’t crash my diet,
    yeah yeah it’s a motivation losing weight fast that’s true I won’t disagree with that
    but I also think it’s a Heath trap as well ... I personally think it’s better to cut the calories by 500 a calories a day of your maintenance weight anymore then that your running on empty ..
    remember a deficit is a deficit

    to idea of losing weight slow is so ur skin can bounce back, not so much about how much u lose. One study doesn't prove anything, I've losted fat very fast in the past but it all came back when u finally can't hold on anymore. That weight loss study must have been done on obese ppl coz normal bmi ppl should go slow since they have significantly less fat to lose.

    Is having a high metabolism good or bad?. As smaller animals have higher metabolism they age and hence die faster. I think the longevity that people attribute to intermittent fasting is due to this lowering of metabolism. Can anybody clarify?

    For the exercise part, I want to add that while diet is wholly more important in *weight loss* than exercise, there have been studies which show dieting without exercise (specifically weight training) leads to greater muscle loss. So, while diet and exercise vs diet alone may show similar results, it is important to look at body composition as well.

    This video is irresponsible. Fat is what makes some people fat. It is possible to exercise it off, but to deny that fat is the substance that causes fatness is... ridiculous.

    So losing weight quicker will not make you lose more muscle vs if you were to lose weight slowly? Since you said there aren't any downsides to losing it quickly.

    The similar weight loss between the 2 groups could be explained. The group using exercise and diet didn't lose much more than the just diet group, possibly because they were gaining muscle at the same time they were losing fat. So their weight could be the same, but their body composition isn't

    In the book "French Women Don't Get Fat", the author does recommend a gradual healthy life to ease into it so it's not a shock but she also includes a fantastic leek soup recipe to kick start your new lifestyle. You drink it for the first three days and because it is a mild diuretic, you drop weight very fast during that time while getting your greens in. It is meant to boost your confidence and encourage you to want to keep trying since you see the results so fast. I think militant diets do work (if done safely and in a short spurt of time) since it might give people the motivation they need but after that short time, you got to make changes to your lifestyle and diet that you can stick with.

  • @abemore

    As far as I can tell, the safety of high dietary saturated fat is currently a point of controversy. Telling people this controversy is solved is potentially dangerous and unethical.

I appreciate the effort you show in your videos a lot and I hope that our channel can be as successful as yours...

    Do you have to eliminate dairy from your diet, what if you tend to eat Cheerios quite often in the mornings? What if that yoplait commercial made you think that it'd be yogurts to aid in weight loss.
