I love this theory. GUN has always been corrupt so they would totally do this. The real life reason they kept this weird lines about shadow looking like sonic is because originally shadow was going to look like a sonic recolor lol 😅 but they thankfully changed his design to look more original and cooler. But they never changed the script lol 😂

I'd always thought this was the case. As well as just making the story have more sense to it, it also adds so much more depth. I hadn't thought about Prison Island being the G.U.N.'s ultimate solution though, so that was really interesting to hear. Great video, Sonicguru!

Here is what happened, Before the events of SA2, the events of SA took place and in the end, Sonic used the emeralds to transform into Super Sonic to defeat Perfect Chaos. Before this transformation, only Tails, Knuckles and Eggman knew about the existence of Super Sonic. In SA finale, Amy and the other citizens see Sonic transforming into Super Sonic where his color changes and his quills rise upward. Than in SA2 when GUN and Amy see Shadow for the first time, they mistake him for Sonic as there was only 1 Hedgehog(except Amy) in the human world at that time so it makes sense that it could be sonic. Secondly, Shadow had a different color and his quills were rised upwards due to which they might have though that it could be one of his transformations. In episode 77 where Dark Sonic was shown for the first and only time, his color changed into black and his quills rised up which resembled Shadow.
The real problem actually lies with the fact that since how could G.U.N think shadow is sonic when sonic was a known hero before shadow escaped that dose not make sence.

Personally, I always assumed by mistook Shadow for Sonic due to the fact it was very publicly seen that not only can sonic change his quilt colors when he turns super but they also speak up in a similar way to Shadow. I mean if I was a civilian in Station Square and I saw a super fast, anthropomorphic hedgehog that wasn’t blue, I would probably just assume it was Sonic in one of his super forms. But even putting aside my own head canon I think you made a good argument here.

This honestly could've been an way interesting plot for Shadow the Hedgehog the game where GUN would be the antagonists and not the black aliens in that game or any Sonic game even Sonic 06. As for the villain of that game i think it would be the GUN commander and that he would not be a kid that was on the ark but the one who gave the orders to raid the ark in the first place and that reason would be because he wanted it all, Shadow, the ark, everything that Gerald had so that he can use for his own gain. As for him living for 50 years i guess yo can say he use Gerald stuff or he met Doom at one point (although he would not play a role in Shadow's creation) and offer him eternal life which prevent him from aging or something or however he lived over 50 years. Now for his villain role since everything about him and GUN has been exposed the world has turned their backs on GUN which would make the commander to snap and order GUN to attack and arrest innocent civilians and probably rule the world or destroy it i suppose and really wants to kill Sonic and gang for ruining everything and it would be up to Sonic and gang to stop the lunatic and GUN.

The issue with this theory is that it just moves the goal post. Now the question becomes why gun would waste resources trying to capture sonic knowing how strong he is, while also letting shadow run free completely capable of revealing their secrets, instead just making their own fall guy they could control or just continuing to lie and say they couldn't capture sonic while actually choosing to ignore him in favor of finding shadow. Even the prison island theory relies on gun knowing several details they just couldn't have, and thanks to shadow the hedgehog we also have to assume that g.u.n commander just didn't watch the news and see that shadow was being called sonic. I have an oc who worked for G.U.N as a agent, she was one of the best agents. One day she was sent on a mission that involved a building on fire, but somehow her three triplet sons were inside the building. Some time passes and she was helping her sons out of the building, but then the leader of the group told them they got what they needed and forced her to leave her triplets in the burning building. She had already lost her husband to cancer, now she lost her only three children. She went to her employers office when they got back to the base, she told him what happened and she is not going home without her kids. He says things like "We're not wasting a flight on three trouble makers" or "If you ask me it's probably better for them to stay there" or "Get over it." He didn't care about her kids, all he cares about is getting the job done. This infuriate her so much that she started attacking her boss. She then leaves G.U.N, she doesn't want to be working for a bunch of heartless people. She lost herself after losing her sons, but after a while she met the Chaotix, and formed a close bond with them.
