Not surprised that this is coming from you. You probably just spent time trying all of the most weird stuff possible and didnt even tried obvious things LMAO
Not sure if someone has said this, but this isn't the entire map. We get access to a small part of just one part of the entire world. It goes to show just how large this world will be. There are a number of different large areas after the main castle area after the Margit fight.
@@malazan6004 I haven't played either of those to draw any comparisons. What I've seen though shows me it's not much like an Ubisoft open-world game. There aren't side-quests beyond what we have the option to do with NPCs like in previous games. No markers telling us to go here or there; just that little suggestion via the stream of light that we don't have to pay attention to at all. There seems to be a good spacing of enemies in that players can travel without constantly running into something that wants to kill them, but they're not so widely spaced that you can run/ride for a while before running into said enemies. I hate that about Horizon Zero dawn; feels like I can't go 50 yards without running in to a group of machines or something. It's almost too packed with all kinds of shit. All the little side/hidden dungeons are ones players have to seek out themselves and a good many seem to be ones easily missed since they're a bit tucked away. I think the incentive for exploring will be those ashes of war, the spirit summons to help in fights, and the like. Depending on how crafting is involved, I likely won't mess much with that. I'm less likely to go with a bow unless it turns out to work very well for me.
@@malazan6004 How can anyone look at the map (what's available to us) and NOT see that it's mostly just filler? It's like they just plopped down events at random places on the map.
I'm happy to hear that as well. The promo reels had left me feeling concerned that we'd be missing out on those terrifically designed indoor areas, that From designs so well. It looked like maybe we'd lost those, in favor of broad open spaces. It makes me happy to hear that we'll have both.

@@davidamiago I agree with this sentiment, but we should probably hold our comments until the game is actually out. You never know when the investors finally get to the core of a company and infest it with their rot, and "game but open world" has been the downfall of many franchises. If they actually succeed here, the next logical step is to go down the "game but mmo" route. Now of they managed that, it would be the mark of a true consumer-first company
@Don Lobo It's the usual FS proven method of subtly guiding players so that they get at least a vague understanding of what they should do. It's like the chime maidens showing up in Bloodborne after Rom (or in the first chalice dungeon if players went and did that first) and the player learning that killing them stops them from spawning more enemies and also makes the enemies easier to kill. Then you get to the One Reborn and the idea is to go up to the next floor to take out the chime maidens that are helping the boss, because by then players are usually conditioned to locate the chime maiden and kill her to make things a little less unpleasant. This also lets Souls veterans see that there is fall damage, but that it's likely different than in previous games. In Sekiro we don't really take fall damage given the ability to jump, but I think they want to make players aware that while they can jump in Elden Ring, fall damage is still present and the usual aggravation.
The fact that Fromsoft is giving beta access this early and allowing people to post content freely is a good sign, it means they're absolutely comfortable with people freely voicing their opinions and giving their criticisms, as well as showing they're quite proud of what they've done so far

@@Odinsday Ill tell you how I fell in love with From Software. A friend lent me Dark Souls 2. About maybe 15 minutes in, I found a greatsword. It said I did not have the strength to wield it. But it let me equip it. I smirked to myself, thinking what a buggy game. You can probably guess what hapened next. I never saw a stamina bar deplete so quickly. I would swing, and the skeleton (singular) stepped back and I missed. I then got absolutely bodied by that bastard. It only added insult to injury seeing he was holding a fucking dagger. I laughed so hard, I woke my wife up sleeping in the next room.
That would be smart however I think the issue that he has with it is that you can fall further and not take damage elsewhere in the game which is a problem. It seems to be inconsistent for some reason and it makes it hard to understand.
Someone didn't actually listen to what he said. The fall in the intro damages you, while if you fall the same distance in the rest of the game you don't take damage. It's misleading - that was the point he was making.
If it includes new movesets then its gonna be real amazing! In DS2 my favorite weapon was astoria's sword dualwielded with a Lost Sinner's greatsword for PvP. The variety of attacks was amazingly cool

This is honestly such a fun video to look back on. it's a really great look at why Limgrave and the first 20-30 hours of Elden Ring are such an incredible opening to the game. By the end of the game dungeons do start to get samey and you do end up repeating encounters (which I don't really have an issue with, some specific exceptions aside) but that first 30 hours is the best game I've ever played. Bearing in mind, other Souls games are shorter than that, that says a lot.

I think the initial fall into the tutorial is actually encouraging and helpful. The fact that it damages you let's you know it wasn't just a fluke leap. It tells you you can will be damaged by falls, gives you an idea of what damage to expect from said height and let's veterans know it isn't lethal as it would have been from previous titles.
Yeah I totally agree now actually! A few other people have pointed out the same thing and I think it makes sense. However, another idea could be the tutorial having 2 falls instead of just one with one of them hurting you and one of them not hurting you so you could get a bit of a feel for the range.
@@IronPineapple I agree, I think there is another fall in the tutorial caves but I might be thinking of somewhere else, I remember a fall near a glowing tree in the cave just before the "boss fight" with the soldier? But if they wanted to effectively give people an understanding of the fall damage range they should have it be a pair of falls one right after the other to cement it in your mind.
@@IronPineapple Part of the problem is the fall damage isn't consistent. There were areas where I was taking fall damage from certain heights and then other areas I wasn't taking damage from that same height or even higher. I didn't understand the rhyme or reason. Elden ring has the potential to be the equivalent to what Monster hunter World represented for the souls series A combination of almost any good feature the past games had, with a lot more open experience and focused on removing every innecesary little mechanic that was holding the games back from being more mainstream I really hope Elden ring becomes a massive hit

@@iceran9622 I think that this will be a lot more easy to get into for non-souls fans, or people that found the game too hard, but I don't think this will be a mainstream hit. Now if I am wrong, I'm wrong, but I seriously don't think it will be. What do the mainstream eat up? Amazing visuals. While this games visuals are pleasing, it looks dated before release. The texture detail is lacking, and the lighting isn't as stark/impressive as many modern games. I mean compare this to Horizon Zero Dawn, Red Dead Redemption 2, or any mainstream game that came out in the last 4 years is either on par or better looking. As for gameplay, I don't think many people in the mainstream enjoy brutally hard/challenging games. Most people are interesting in gunplay rather than swordplay. The only thing that will make this mainstream if it does go mainstream is the hype around such a title. "Elden Ring" has been hyped up by many since its reveal trailer. That will be the only thing that could bring this game into the forefront. I mean the whole Souls series sold 27 million, including the remaster. That's a whole series of games, that sold for about as much as RDR2, less than Skyrim, about a quarter as much as GTA:V, less than a quarter of Minecraft... Compared to Monster Hunter World the series only got 7 million above that single games sales. Less sales than: Duck Hunt, Wii Play, Pokémon Gold / Silver / Crystal, Human: Fall Flat, The Witcher 3, Diablo III, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, Terraria, Mario Kart Wii... For a whole series to be outsold like that... Is Elden Ring really going to go mainstream? The next question is: does it matter if it does or doesn't? EDIT: So far the hype for uncoming games 2022 is all on Elden Ring, so early sales will be the biggest indication of whether this game goes mainstream or not.

I joked years ago with my friend that every game in the Soulsborne series was just a massive feature test for specific mechanics and they'd all eventually be refined and combined into one super massive game. I can't believe that actually seems to kind of be the case, intentional or not.
As a game developer this is how we train. One of my first games as a stationary fighter for combos, one was a shopkeeper game for inventories/economies, one game was a hoverboard toy. Combined I’m now working on a spectacle fighter who’s primary external movement is a hoverboard, with an actual inventory and shop system.

Speaking of sellingpoints: I see one big problem that makes invasions in general *very undesirable* in all soulsgames. Of course it is the community. You always never get this cool, stylish invader that bows or fights honorably, enhancing the experience and making you respect your win or even your loss. Most often it is a little loser who plays ultra sweaty & cowardly and they tend to be more annoying as being an enrichment of the experience. If I see such a critter use that teleport on me and staying in my world, I might just disconnect regardless of a Co-Op compagnion. I will not entertain the unworthy & grace them with my undeserved presence if they cannot show respectable behaviour. It is true that an Invader has no obligation to follow a certain code of demeanour. But so has no Host any kind of obligation and it is the Host who *ALLOWS* for the invasion after all, having all the power to disconnect in their hands after all. There was never a single Invader who killed the Host and he couldn't do anything about. There were ignorant Hosts maybe, but a knowing Host has always *allowed* an Invader to kill them and nothing else. I cut the connection quite a few times in DS2 and DS3. Even though I am not asking for much. During the years I got more patient & "mature" maybe. But if I see the unimpressive, generic, boring and even spiteful... I can't wait. It takes me only half a second to reach the cable. ;) To end this "rant"(?) on a positive note though: FromSoft should do something like when you are invaded, your Rune/Soul currency is doubled you recieve from enemys. Just that would be enough to make the risk of suffering obnoxious immersion breaking trolls worthwhile. The invasion feature never got the love it deserved. And it suffered from griefers & sweaty tryhards. Would be a pity to see it return for just one or two unique kinds of currency attached to it and afterwards its only used by the sweatlords again who play so~ Meta and have such a quick connection that you basically only play against rolling & parrys and you bore yourself to death during each battle. Cause that is how I felt in DS3. Not so much in DS2. For some reason that relative long attack-windows from DS2 made the sweatlords more managable. And magic had spells cooler for PvP too. Hexes were fun.
I feel like having the first fall a player takes be a fall that hurts you is actually super helpful in indicating to players that sometimes you'll have to make leaps of faith for one simple fact: It didn't *KILL* you. Previous FromSoft games, you fall thirty feet you're stone-cold dead. The fact that the fall only *HURTS* you is super important at communicating "Hey, you'll have to be careful, sometimes you can Try Down without instantly dying.

I LOVE THIS. I also noticed from Demon's Souls remake that falls are way more forgiving when I fell off of the staircase shortcuts. Seeing as there is a lot of verticality and your steed jumps around like a mountain goat, I'd be shocked if there is no gliding spell or glider type of tool

1:48 I actually think that this is a pretty good way of communicating to the player that they can fall a good distance without dying, but that there is still fall damage. A fall like that would be an instakill in the souls games so by forcing the player to take that plunge first thing it may help to dispel some of the players fear around long drops and encourage them to explore and take more risks.
That’s exactly what I thought. It’s showing the old soulsborne players how much greater your fall distance can be and it teaches it without an intrusive pop up.

That defensive move with the shield seems inspired by lance in Monster Hunter. Which I really like, franchises should inspire each other to make games even greater. Same with not losing stamina while outside combat (from MHWorld)
You actually do lose stamina outside combat in MHW, its just that with your stamina meter hidden by default, you don't really notice it unless you end up at really low stamina
Just realised that they made the mount a goat instead of a horse (goatlike) because goats can survive in extremely narrow cliffs almost defying gravity In other words a horse would not be so agile whilst climbing so this makes it feel more natural even though the player might only get it subconsiously

the poise system seems to be worthy of debate, mostly because the equip load stat in this game is Strength and traditionally Strength weapons have long wind ups requiring poise, so now the two concepts of Strength and Poise are more closely intertwined
Yeah but depending on the implementation this also means a huge nerf to Dex builds. If roll speed is still tied to equip load, Dex builds basically aren't gonna be able to equip shit without pumping an otherwise useless stat. Meanwhile Str builds get to increase both offense and defense with investment into a single skill.
10:16 - So awesome to see something like this, the NPCs actually changing their move-set and doing a riposte animation. Makes them feel a lot less like NPCs :]
Granted, it also makes me extremely angry to get styled on by NPC robots, but I mean, I hate getting mixed up in real life, so that's hardly an argument.
Hands down the best video about the network test/private playthrough. This was literally the first time that I heard that POWER STANCING IS BACK, AND EVEN BETTER THAN BEFORE.
I love how your first interaction with a NPC in the demo is a dude who pretty much says, "You have no bitches, no go away and die in a hole." Also I totally missed that hole in the tutorial cave and I could not figure out how to two hand my weapons. I definitely missed a lot!
Same here! I was like, "I KNOW the gameplay trailer had two handing, how do I do this?!" But I'm glad I watched a Elden Ring video before my final session to find that cave....I avoided it initially since A) it was dark and B) someone (I thought) was trolling in the messages to get someone to jump and die..... nope just a major part of the tutorial I missed my first 3 sessions...

Not sure if someone has said this, but this isn't the entire map. We get access to a small part of just one part of the entire world. It goes to show just how large this world will be. There are a number of different large areas after the main castle area after the Margit fight.
@SOUL SEEKER I'll look it up. I'm aware of their earlier games, like the Armored Core series and such.
A large world worries me as I dont want filler like far cry and halo infinite

@@davidamiago I agree with this sentiment, but we should probably hold our comments until the game is actually out. You never know when the investors finally get to the core of a company and infest it with their rot, and "game but open world" has been the downfall of many franchises. ...and they love their fanbase for getting them this far.
Maybe that first fall damaging you was a way for them to say "You can survive some falls, but there is a limit. So don't say we didn't warn you."
In Sekiro we don't really take fall damage given the ability to jump, but I think they want to make players aware that while they can jump in Elden Ring, fall damage is still present and the usual aggravation.
plus, now they have a controlled environment in which they can teach healing.

Someone didn't actually listen to what he said. The fall in the intro damages you, while if you fall the same distance in the rest of the game you don't take damage. It's misleading - that was the point he was making.

Yeah I totally agree now actually! A few other people have pointed out the same thing and I think it makes sense.

I can't believe that actually seems to kind of be the case, intentional or not.
is gonna be hard to do something better now :V
This is correct.
@Shin Shaman jeez still going at it with the copypasta, must have a lot of free time on your hands
@Shin Shaman i know, copy pasta, but does anyone know who made it or where it came from because it's pretty damn funny to think someone made it to unironically diss the souls formula.

Speaking of sellingpoints:
I see one big problem that makes invasions in general *very undesirable* in all soulsgames.
It takes me only half a second to reach the cable. ;)
To end this "rant"(?) on a positive note though:
FromSoft should do something like when you are invaded, your Rune/Soul currency is doubled you recieve from enemys.
