I was playing this just now on my Switch and when I got to this part I was completely surprised that it was completely redone and voiced! It put a huge smile on my face.
I just went through this scene right now, man. Although I prefer the original OST (due to personal taste and nostalgia), this completely remade opera scene really moved me. I'm also playing on my Nintendo Switch.
Sooo... I started the SNES version of the game a few months ago, lost the save and when I knew the pixel remaster was coming to Switch I decided to wait. I got to this part in the original version and just last night I got here in the pixel remaster. Amazed at the work they've done with this whole part in general :')
I'm glad they found a female vocalist with a good, realistic singing voice to keep on tune, because as we all remember that Celes is a military general, not a real singer.
That makes Celes' voice acted singing a lot more sense, and building up her guilt of herself from the opera before the world of ruin a lot more endearing. This song still made my eyes wet😭
This song always gets me and I actually like the remaster of it. I remember hearing the original when I was 7 or 8. It was one of the first times music made me feel complex emotions that I couldn't understand or explain, being so young. My brother playing, I would just sit down and listen completely entranced.
I was moved back on the original, but this brought tears from the very first notes. Props to the pixel remaster voice actors and the dev team who brought the idea of having the opera being actually sung in the first place😻😹😻😹😻
I'm not surprised they put a lot of love into this scene. This is a lot of peoples' favorite part of FF6. Some of the castle looks a little meh, but everything else is perfect. The moon looks gorgeous. Celes' singing is great.
I noticed the castle being a little off too, but then I thought about it and remembered that it's not supposed to be a real castle, but a stage play attempting to make a castle and that made a lot more sense to me
Yeah, this actually reminds me of why VI looked better than VII back then; VI came along at the peak of the SNES' graphics, while the first 3D entry, VII, was released when 3D was still relatively new. The stage visual's graphics are similar to PSX era, so it really stands out among the superior 2D art.
I can't get used to the reworked lyrics, though. The original SNES lines are unforgettably burned into my memory, and the reason I sign everything I ever write to my wife as "forever yours": Oh my hero, far away now Will I ever see your smile? Love goes away, like night into day It's just a fading dream I'm the darkness, you're the stars Our love's brighter than the sun For eternity, for me there can be Only you, my chosen one Must I forget you? Our solemn promise? Will autumn take the place of spring? What shall I do? I'm lost without you Speak to me once more We must part now, my life goes on But my heart won't give you up Ere I walk away, let me hear you say I meant as much to you So gently, you touched my heart I will be forever yours Come what may, I won't age a day I'll wait for you, always
Wow. For like 28 years I've always had it in my head canon that Celes must have had some kind of opera training as part of military school, and that's how I got my mind around her being able to walk-on crush her part. The fact that they directed someone to sing like a "normal" person makes everything make so much more sense. Great touch, and great work improving an already iconic videogame scene

When I started playing the Final Fantasy 6 Pixel Remaster and started getting lost in the music, I had a thought about the opera part of the game and I was so hoping there would be actual singing and this scene blew me away. I'm so glad my expectations were not only met but blown away.
This scene has no right to be as powerful, and moving as it is. It's beautiful. Absolutely beautiful. In how it's animated, in that wonderful singing voice of Celes, and lyrics. And my goodness, that score in the background... I love this scene
The temptation to hire a world-class Adele like singer to do this part must've been immense. To instead have someone sing it in an amateurish way, because it fits the Celes character, sounds worse but makes the scene work 10x better. Celes is a general, not a professional opera singer. Kudos to whoever made this decision. It makes the 10 year old me that heard the garbled SNES "singing" so happy.

But this remaster proved me wrong; all of the tracks are absolutely wonderful, especially the opera with actual vocals.
What I love about this song is that it applies to the character in the play as much as Celes herself. Locke is her Draco, saving her twice. Once from torture at the hands of Imperial soldiers and a second time from despair upon waking up to the World of Ruin and Cid's death.
Damn it Square, KEEP THOSE GODDAMN ONIONS AWAY FROM ME! I can't believe they not only added different camera angles for the scene but also went with voice acting for that one scene! They seriously looked at the "Hold my beer!" Moment they did with 7 way back when and uno reversed that!

Agreed. I appreciate the artistry and evolution here. It's very good. There's a lot to like. But... for me, newer doesn't always mean better. There was an honesty to the original version 94. You really FELT that this is the first time something like this scene had ever been created. Video games didn't try for this level of emotion back then. Solid effort but pales in comparison to the original version.

Nostalgia blinders.
I too prefer the original
Agreed. I appreciate the artistry and evolution here. It's very good. There's a lot to like.
But... for me, newer doesn't always mean better.
There was an honesty to the original version 94. You really FELT that this is the first time something like this scene had ever been created.
Video games didn't try for this level of emotion back then.

Again, all new concepts. Early transcendence of video games becoming an art form.
Everyone has a different first experience so that will always be nearest to the individual's heart.
And I prefer the original translation lyrics. I find them the most poetic.
