First of all: IMO more like ghost rider AND the prowler, the reason is that ghost rider is weak to holy weapons and speaking of weapons, he can also SPAWN any weapon he wants (no wonder I have no friends) and also prowler because, well... look at him, he looks like the prowler except they color swapped him with red, whit, and green eyes And second: you kinda are right on saying venom, I mean have you seen his suit for MK11? Wooooooo it’s amazing, my personal favorites are the armored suits and the classic like suits
ComicWriter 2020 actually Image now has tons of phenomenal titles. Sex Criminals, Sex, Bitch Planet, Deadly Class, Black Science, Low, The Bounce, and Chew are some of my favs. There’s definitely more.
I love how he says this like it’s a bad thing while simultaneously deriding Todd’s ability to tell a story. It mirrors OPs inability to make a point. The story doesn’t revolve around Al Simmons, he’s just a part of it. The whole point is Al doesn’t really know what he’s supposed to do and often times in trying to do the right things he plays right into Malebolgia’s hands.
True true but being worth 300 million paints a pretty hefty target on ur back ,people want that money and if they gotta sue him to get it best believe there will be no shortage of people doing just that.
Todd was involved in the production of the show and if you watch the portion where Todd himself discusses it you will see the evolution of the character was deliberate: it served to prevent animators in Korea from making too many mistakes but simultaneously it showed Spawn's progression (or regression?) as a character! In the first season, Spawn started out as more of a traditional super hero fighting criminals, whereas in the second and third seasons, he became an urban legend, one of a "vampire" prowling around near the scene of some brutal killings and incidents; an angry specter striking from the shadows, dishing out justice while helping the weak victims of evil forces. The show is about a former "Special Ops" agent. who became a Hell-Spawn, one very familiar with "the evil that men do" but who chose to bring the fight to them, while still struggling to regain his own humanity! To say this series is EXCELLENT is an under- statement!
Pulsar Stargrave I think when Spawn finally gets out of the standard superhero stage he becomes far more interesting. A bit like an Othello or MacBeth type character imo.
Twitch was one of my most favourite characters in the show, he’s a smart, fearless and a badass character where he can’t be relatable but instead a guy where he slowly comes to the conclusion in identifying Spawn. That one part where he got shot in the head was really surprising, thank god he’s still alive and now shows off his badassery.
CIDES Agreed! Twitch is my favorite character in the show. I like Twitch because I personally find smart, calm, genius, patient, and humble characters like L and Itachi relatable. That’s just me. I find it awesome to see a little guy like Twitch kick some ass. I really liked the parts when Twitch didn’t flinch at Chapel and talked calmly to Spawn.
Image Comics was huge in the 90s & Spawn was arguably the greatest character that came out of it. While I liked the cartoon as a kid, it was too slow paced & it just ended abruptly (just as the story was finally going somewhere). We really need a reboot of this series on a platform like Netflix.
Thanks for sticking around this long, man. As long as you guys still want more, I'll keep doing this. So it looks like I won't be quitting any time soon!
I just binged this series and I really liked it, but it had the issue of introducing plot elements and never doing anything with them. * Overtkill is killed offscreen * Overtkill is never repaired despite claims that he could be * Spawn gets a bunch of guns and never uses them, despite them becoming a major plot point * Angela is introduced and then never does anything * Violator appears in every episode, but doesn't do much more than whisper after the first season * Violator claims "this isn't over", but never actually comes back to do anything * Spawn's spawn is never born * We never even get to see Malbogia (Malborgia?) * The cliff hanger really left the series on a note of "We just gettin' started!"
You hit so many of the points I had. Especially killing off Overkill offscreen. This has to he one of the only comic based anythings I can think of that would show shadowy phone calls over a demon fighting a cyborg. Nope, not like I'd wanna see that...
Is Angela the red head spawn lady? I just watched the series in lk 3 days and I don’t mind plot holes but this shit was like so obviously capped on time that they shouldn’t have done so much lol.. it was very fun to watch tho
For some reason, Todd McFarlane has some weird fascination with having Spawn media not really having Spawn. This show, and the Spawn reboot, which he wants to star Sam and Max-I mean Twitch, with Spawn only having an appearance.
@Jeshex I disagree. I think he's the best character ever. I want media outside the comics to actually focus on him as much as the comics do. That's one of the main reasons I hate his media outside the comics.
You could do a video on the MTV Spider-Man show. Not a lot of people know about it, and from what I've seen fan opinion is very mixed. It's just this weird corner of the Spider-Man mythos where it's kind of a continuation of the first Sam Rami film, but also trying to tell it's own story with unique characters. I don't know, I think it's fascinating.
Rory Baker I watched that when I was maybe 13, I watched the first few episodes when they premiered but i wasn't able to watch it weekly cause I had a short attention span and forgot to catch it. and I didn't have a TiVo or anything to record it at the time. I thought it was a pretty cool show. I liked the art style, and I liked the few episodes I got to watch, but it was on MTV, and from what I remember it had some cringe worthy romantic scenes. but I never remember it for anything it did good or great.
Calling this show a hidden gem is an understatement. This show is like a hidden diamond that shines brighter than a fucking star when you finally find it.

Did you know the reason for Angela being with Marvel now is because she was created by McFarlane, but by NEIL GAIMAN? And McFarlane has a bit of a bad history when it comes to paying royalty to creators of characters e used.

I remember watching the live action Spawn movie on late night television, and I remember thinking how dumb it all was. I have a cold and a lot of time to kill, so thanks for the rec. Batman and Spawn came out in dark times in world history. Operation Just Cause and Operation Desert Shield/Storm were very fresh in people's minds. Operation Gothic Serpent (Black Hawk Down) and the Waco Seige showed dead and injured men on national television. The Yugoslavia had fallen apart and the images of armed troops and destitute folk had been broadcasted across the globe. The Alfred P. Murrah Building in Oklahoma was demolished. Before the millenia closed out, U.S. Embassies in Kenya and Tanzania were attacked by Al Qaeda. Dark television shows for dark times. These shows came out during the perfect storm of worldwide politics. Sorry if that sounds bad.
Let's be real, when it comes to art Marvel really should have listened to Todd. I'd hate to see what Todd would have done with the writing of Spiderman if he ever got a hold of it though.
He wrote several issues of Spider-Man actually. On that one run that had no adjective and it was just called "Spider-Man" It was confusing, poorly paced, full of strange pop culture references that were instantly dated, and bizarre moments that seemed added so Todd had an excuse to draw a weird idea regardless if it made sense, like Spidey webbing live bad guys to his limbs to form human shields while fighting a riot of bad guys
The reason why Angela was in Guardians of the Galaxy was because she was created by another guy named Neil Gaiman (he created the Coraline book and DC's The Sandman ) and I think Neil had beef with Todd because Todd used Angela in the series and toys without permission or giving him money. I think Neil won a lawsuit to get Angela back and he put her in Marvel to piss off Todd cuz Todd hated Marvel which was why he quit. Also since Chapel was created and owned by Rob Liefeld, Rob also didn't like Chapel being used in the series so Rob quitted Image Comics and took Chapel, this is why Chapel wasn't in the movie and was replaced by Jessica Priest AND Spawn's death was retconed in the comics since it was written that Chapel killed him. In my headcanon it was always Chapel who torched Al
A couple of years ago, I endlessly searched for a spawn review. Going back this year I see you were the one who posted it and went over all the Talking Points I hoped some reviewer would go over, so thank you.
I think the colors of the costume thing is pretty nittpicky, considering how badass he looks in those shadows. For example, spawn perched on the cross with just his eyes and cloak being super colored. it gives him an ominous feel, and the glowing green is meant to be the truly bright color, as it gives him an inhuman feel.
Tradesmart is the name of the place? Oh my god I've spent years trying to remember. I kept asking everyone who was their with me that day and none of them could give a name. Were you working there the day Todd showed up?
GodzillaMendoza I was not, I worked from July 2015 till September 2016, but I know it's tradesmart because of the background.also I know why we had SO many unsold spawn. Comics (even with the everything must go sale we still had hundreds unsold), also I worked at the Colorado location.
Was it that Spawn issue with the blue background and the picture of Spawn's face with the markings all over it? I remember ending up with like 8 of those after that trip. By any chance, is the Colorado location still open? I'd love to go back there one day and walk out with a shopping cart full of 80s movies on VHS one day.
GodzillaMendoza yup, sadly all locations closed due to hasting going backrupt, this includes places like moviestop, all locations had to close by the rule of chapter 11 bankruptcy. The sales at tradesmart were great, it was horrible CEO moves that killed it. Hasting I should add was the last remaining of the home video like blockbuster and Hollywood video. After those business fizzled out hasting adapted to being a nerd Store. Tradesmart was the first in a successful trial to combine comics, video games, movies, music, and collectibles. It also hosted Yugioh and Magic the gathering tourneys every week. Despite being minimum wage, it was a great job and we were very effective (despite one employee doing NOTHING,but that's another issue) so yah it's more dead then the amazing Spider-Man franchise
Ah, behind-the-scenes-corporate-shenanigans strike again. Sad to see, it was a cool place and I wish I had gone another time under less hectic circumstances. But it's cool to get some closure on the story. Thanks for letting me know how that all played out. Nice to also hear from what I assume is another Colorado local?
Loved this cartoon growing up.. and basically cartoons like this was hard to see at this time. The only adult cartoon with this language and nudity was Japanese anime and you had to rent or buy that stuff at the time. So to have this cartoon on HBO I thought it was amazing.
I knew so little about spawn that coming into the spawn animated series last year it was a really cool and interesting watch and I wish it continued the story set up in the third season and it came out a year before I was born too. I'm new to your channel and I already love it because of the spiderman video game retrospective I can't wait for more comic related vids from you. great review btw.
10:26 I like Spawn in the shadows it makes him look ghostly and other worldly. Plus when your stuck looking like Hot Topic Prowler then maybe you can understand him staying in the shadows.
So, animated Spawn and animated Batman TAS are the same character? (I know they aren't.) 90-95% in shadow, no visible pupils in eyes, long flowing capes to hide themselves in, to keep the bad guy wondering if he gets punched, kicked etc.
The Man From Krypton (don’t take this too seriously) except ya know one brutally kills people (with guns no less) and is a monster trying to be a man. The other (sometimes) has a no killing rule that’s a man trying to a “monster”/ symbol of fear. Lol All jokes aside you forgot the to mention the fact that the both of them have clown issues.
Excellent adult animation series and its Heavy Metal, CSI, The Crow and Batman TAS in one and loved it since 15 when it came out. So many comedies in adult animation as we need more adult animation like this
I watch all 3 Spawn episodes,It’s hella AWESOME!Im disappointed that they didn’t bring another Violator fight seen or bringing the redeemer, but it’s a good show
"Here he sounds like a pissed-off monster in eternal agony"
Well... Spawn *IS* a Pissed-off monster in eternal agony.
This art style is orgasmic.
The shading, the dark tone, and just how Spawns cape is so unnatural yet so fitting in all of it.
"Spawn is like throwing Deadpool, Ghost Rider and Prowler into a blender."
And Venom! Don't forget Venom!
And punisher.
And a bit of Spider-Man
First of all: IMO more like ghost rider AND the prowler, the reason is that ghost rider is weak to holy weapons and speaking of weapons, he can also SPAWN any weapon he wants (no wonder I have no friends) and also prowler because, well... look at him, he looks like the prowler except they color swapped him with red, whit, and green eyes

OH MY GOD, SOMEONE ELSE REMEMBERS THAT SPAWN RIPOFF THAT EVEN MAXIMUM CARNAGE READERS TEND TO FORGET.
Nintendo Handheld Oh my God there's 3 of us
Jack O Brien Love your tick avatar.
Nintendo Handheld Thanks I have it because I'm playing him in a motion comic series.
Jack O Brien That's cool.
A couple of years ago, I endlessly searched for a spawn review. Going back this year I see you were the one who posted it and went over all the Talking Points I hoped some reviewer would go over, so thank you.
I'm currently rewatching it after years. Still as amazing as always. A cartoon with actual balls.
“Without being anime” funny you say that since some Japanese animators worked on various parts of the show lol
Damn, after watching this I forgot how much I love Spawn.
Great work as always. You sure know your stuff!!! Keep it up, you the man! Voted!
Thanks, dad.
@@GodzillaMendoza WAIT A MINUTE, XAVIER, THAT'S YOUR DAD?! IVE SEEN HIM ON SO MANY COMMENT SECTIONS!
I thought that Todd looked like someone! He looks like Matthew McConaughey!
9:20 especially weird considering Spawn isn’t a marvel character. Last i looked he was still just an Image comics publication.
Todd was partnered with Neil Gaiman, who created Angela for Image. Todd and Neil had a falling out so Neil took Angela to Marvel
I tried to draw Spawn once, it went actually pretty good.
You mentioned Gargoyles. I love you
I love the background beat.
Keith rules as Spawn. I'm glad he is back as his voice in Mk11.
I started this Show, It's on Prime Instant Streaming, in prep for his MK11 appearance. it's way better than I ever expected.
4:10 Keith David is flawless as Spawn! No homo, I love his voice!
sup you are so right about the spider man games spiderman 3 never liked to swing around for fun love your videos godzilla
Holy crap, your story takes place what's I use to work (before Hastings went bankrupt only 2 Tradesmarts existed, now there are none)
Nice to also hear from what I assume is another Colorado local?
finally! Now it's Batman time
Noel Rodriguez spidermans better.
Why does Batman as a character beat him in every aspect then? Be it comic books, movies, animation, and video games.
Aerry Suri Because he's Batman!!
I was a little caught off guard when they said fuck for the first time.
I always liked how every episode opened with Todd McFarland asking questions and telling us stuff about spawn
Me and my friends had to watch this on the sneak like it was porn because it was so violent.
Now that must've been fun
But... 2:03
Loved this cartoon growing up.. and basically cartoons like this was hard to see at this time. The only adult cartoon with this language and nudity was Japanese anime and you had to rent or buy that stuff at the time. So to have this cartoon on HBO I thought it was amazing.
I hear appetite for destruction in the background ....I love you
I stumbled onto this show awhile ago and was always amazed with the design of Spawn. It’s a shame this series was never completed.
I think the darkness of spawn is more artistic than annoying
I knew so little about spawn that coming into the spawn animated series last year it was a really cool and interesting watch and I wish it continued the story set up in the third season and it came out a year before I was born too. I'm new to your channel and I already love it because of the spiderman video game retrospective I can't wait for more comic related vids from you. great review btw.
Man I wish this show would get a new season! I wanna see malebolgia in this dark version!
I still have the complete series on DVD! I LOVE IT. i do wish they would put out an HD/4K version tho.
Watched the show today and I have to say, it's Awesome.
Underrated Masterpiece!
Yh it was an awesome show that should’ve lasted longer IMO.
5 seasons and just a nice round arc
10:26 I like Spawn in the shadows it makes him look ghostly and other worldly. Plus when your stuck looking like Hot Topic Prowler then maybe you can understand him staying in the shadows.
this was my favorite show growing up and its a classic
keeping him in the shadows was a genius decision
Dude, your sense of comedy is amazing! I laugh every time. Please, keep it up.
Woah woah woah!! Fantastic stops before we get to Superman The Animated Series. It was good, but far from fantastic.
So, animated Spawn and animated Batman TAS are the same character?
(I know they aren't.)
90-95% in shadow, no visible pupils in eyes, long flowing capes to hide themselves in, to keep the bad guy wondering if he gets punched, kicked etc.
Finally, there's an upload
Excellent adult animation series and its Heavy Metal, CSI, The Crow and Batman TAS in one and loved it since 15 when it came out.
So many comedies in adult animation as we need more adult animation like this
I love this show as much as I love Batman The Animated Series!
Appetite for Destruction in the background was a pretty good touch man
I watch all 3 Spawn episodes,It’s hella AWESOME!Im disappointed that they didn’t bring another Violator fight seen or bringing the redeemer, but it’s a good show
