The reason Malbolgeia’s lips don’t move when he talks is actually because demons in the Spawn universe communicate through telepathy, so it’s cool they kept that detail in, but that doesn’t make it any better because they’d don’t explain it in the film
John Leguizamo is the last person alive who needs to apologize for that movie. His portrayal of the Clown was one of if not the best part of that movie, and it wasn't bad.

So an evil boss with a hot assistant and has a kink for creepy things and has pictures of explosions in his office...so...is this the office of Michael Bay?
I'm surprised the Nostalgia Critic didn't talk about how HUGE spawn was in the 90s. He had his own comic, action figures, trading cards, t-shirts, soundtrack, video games, hell even his own show on HBO. And keep in mind that Spawn wasn't from Marvel or DC. That was unheard of at the time.
Spawn's candle wasn't lit too but when it did, it was the brightest in the late 90s but by the 2000s, his hype died down. (I blame the movie's failure.) And the talk of a sequel went through such a long development since the 2000s for so long that it soon became a reboot but after how long it's been in development, it probably won't happen because now Spawn is "dead" to everyone these days.
Fun Fact: I just saw a 2022 interview with Michael Jai White. In the interview, he agreed that the film was bad, and offered an explanation for why it turned out like it did... White has said that the initial rough cut was a much better, darker and more complete movie, which was screened for an audience for feedback. The film got excellent feedback, so New Line gave the director full creative control over the film, assuming he would make it even better. However, the director (a former special effects supervisor) instead decided to use the movie as an effects showcase, and edited out most of the scenes of character development in order to make room for more VFX and action. White was supposedly shocked when he saw the premiere and realized most of the important plot and character scenes were gone, and had been replaced with loud, obnoxious special effects. White has also said that there are scenes in the movie that were completely fabricated through editing pre-existing footage and adding CGI to it. (Such as the scene where Spawn removes the heart monitor from Wynn's body... that scene was completely constructed in post from B-roll footage with added CGI and wasn't in the script. It was simply put in to throw in some more "state of the art" CGI.)
The HBO series was awesome, I stumbled across it one day on youtube and got so into it, the athmosphere, mature storyline and Keith Davids' legendary voice acting all made it for me
Keith David's voice is fucking hot. He should be Swayzak if he ever returns on Toonami (but in my lore, he's written with his New Zealander accent from the game, and it's his native Phobian accent. His human disguise is Afro-Kiwi.)
Sounds like Frank knew how bad this movie would be and belched his lines to sound as much like a Saturday morning cartoon villian and/or Dr. Claw, and cleared his voice long enough to ask for his paycheck and the time he wasted on crap like this.
"He turns into a giant pumpkin head which, according to 90's logic, means he can't talk anymore, he can just go...(makes growling sounds) ...and, of course, he also loses the personality we've seen throughout the rest of the movie." Me: Like The Bug from Men in Black.
In Toonami fanfics I've seen, Swayzak apparently can grow like so many Power Rangers villains (albeit I'm sure BoneSattelite intended it as a reference to Sark's final moments in Tron.) That just reminded me of it.
Critic is strangely right though with the effects. Spawn at 9:53 looks exactly like the pre-rendered Killer Instinct Gold characters, especially Glacius.
Well, as a fan of Spawn, altough this movie has some problems, I think they remained as loyal to the source material as they could, even today we don't see that as much...

In fact, it's pretty much like what they did with Deadpool. The movie just dumps it on you all at once, so it doesn't really work that well.
Zack Bloodworth In Deadpool (the movie) they start with Deadpool already in the suit, and then tell you how he got there in flashback. Which is similar to how they introduce Spawn in the comics, and should have done in the movie, but they didn't.
HOW?! What kind of brain damage did the awards show have when they saw this movie?! Didn't they see how awful Malebolgia (you know, that shitty-looking Devil whose name the Critic never mentions?) looked?!
Dakota Foote Yeah...I know that. I'm telling this to all the people who are unaware this. It's like going back in time and looking at 32-bit graphics. It may look like shit to this generation, but for me at that time it was mind blowing.
This was actually the fault of a bunch of CGI Bros who got fired, and forever banned, from Skywalker Ranch by Lucas. They literally tried using this movie as a demo reel for their “skills”. They even changed the final battle to CGI Hell in the middle of filming, with only 1/8th of the effects budget left, and in trade for 7days of planned filming days.
Todd McFarlane is taking forever with a script because he insists on writing it himself, even though you could give it to any decent horror script writer and put together a decent Spawn story.
there was an MTV cartoon that came out shortly after the movie which Todd Mcfarlen had direct control over. It's been awhile since I've seen it, but if memory serves correct the first couple seasons were actually pretty good, although the last one kinda started to go down hill a little.
***** makes me wonder how the hell their gonna pull off a preacher mini series. which is currently in the works. Don't think they'll ever get around to doing the crossed though. If I had to sum that comic up in two words it would be " murder orgy"
+balgus82 It was actually part of the plot initially. I read the book adaptation of this flick back when it came out (was a huge Spawn fan so anything 'Spawn' related was a "Must buy!" back then) and in the book Clown had been keeping tabs on Wanda and Terry, and the air freshener was his way of messing with them. Wanda even at one point asked Terry: "Hey, did you or Al put this in my car?" which led to one of those typical "Nah, wasn't me and I don't see why he would" "Oh, ok. Well, it's werid but I don't have time to think about it 'cos I'm late for work!" convos between the two.
Omg, i cant believe I got a reply from channel Awesome!.........Awesome! ...................... I'll tell my grandchildren about this day! :-P.... I wondery who replied to me 0_o??
In the movie Cyan is Al's daughter. In the TV show Al was impotent. In the comics Wanda was pregnant right before Al's last mission, they got into an argument, he hit her and she miscarried.
@@animechic420 in the comics Al belonged in Hell because he was a bad person. He redeems himself over the course of the comics and becomes a hero. The studio didn’t want to have a first film where Al is a villain protagonist, so they made him a hero who went to hell for being a killer soldier.
@@SefniAsheforr neither do u because in the matrix review when chester a bum says the movie is symbollic and means stuff the Critic replies with what JL Member just said
I know playstation 1 games that look better than the CG, no wonder Todd McFarlane is making a reboot to give Spawn a proper film (Note, I namely refer to the CG Malbosia, if I spelled the name of that demon right)
In the comic, if I remember it is explained that Violator, and Malebolgia(the one you call the devil) speak telepathically, so having Malebolgia's mouth not moving makes sense. But that is pretty much all they got right. John Leguisamo's portrayal as Clown/Violator is pretty good too. I am still waiting patiently for the new Spawn movie.
I don't think it's fair to compare Spawn's CGI to _any_ generation of video games. The priorities are just so...different. To put it simply, it probably has about as many polygons as a PS2-3 game but less idea of how to use them than the first 3D games ever made. The problem was less the technology and more the (lack of) art direction.
It does look like a pre-rendered intro video of a 90s game. Or in a less lucky situation, the entirety of an FMV game (that is probably made of quick-time events as gameplay).
4:27 I never knew about that. 15:58 Yeah, like how they did Scorpion after he pulled his mask off. 17:38 Awesome 20:44 Right! I said that too when I was little.

I'm always confused when in movies and shows the Devil wants Armageddon to happen. I highly doubt that he hasn't read the Bible, so I would think that the Devil would want to put off the end of days as much s possible. He's got a sweet deal.
Malebolgia isn't the Devil in Spawn. He's the ruler of the 8th sphere of Hell. Spawn kills him and later confronts Satan and God, further finding out that God is not the almighty creator of the cosmos but Satan's twin brother and are children of the true cosmological creator called the Mother of Existence.
What I mean is that he has a sweet deal now. He gets to torture all the souls he wants in Hell and make peoples lives go to crap through subtle means on Earth. There's no reason he should want Armageddon to happen so soon. It's not like he's being tortured in Hell.
+Primus1985 I liked them well enough. They were flawed, but fairly enjoyable. I'm glad Marvel Studios has Spider Man back though. Some of the ideas Sony had for the Amazing Spider Man franchise were downright ridiculous.
+KingoftheGundam79 Meh for me I could never get into them 2 especially was terrible. Had one good scene with him fighting Electro (gag) in Times Square but other than that :P Dont know weather it was the writing, direction or the actor but my God that Peter Parker sucked, he was like some creepy emo kid. Yeah Sony was gonna try and world build so they can make multiple movies around Spider-Man, instead of doing the right thing and letting it go to Marvel. I'd rather watch Spider-Man 3 again than Amazing 1 or two.
The Violator was really the only good part of the movie. The acting and writing were both good for his character. Jason Wynn was terribly written, Cain was terribly written, and Spawn was terribly written. Cain was decently acted, but both Wynn and Spawn were acted almost as badly as they were written.
The "S" on Swayzak's torso (yes, that diamond is the Phobian character for "S") means control. Swayzak is always a control freak, even after he becomes a hero.

Zack Bloodworth In Deadpool (the movie) they start with Deadpool already in the suit, and then tell you how he got there in flashback. Which is similar to how they introduce Spawn in the comics, and should have done in the movie, but they didn't.

You know what the irony is for the effects? They won an award for best special effects at the time.
Yeah, but even in 1997 there was better CGI - even Toy Story looked more realistic than the hell in this movie.
Tommy Carr T2's and Jurassic Park's CGI still look good to this day.
Well, at least they tried with the available technology of the nineties.
The only reason I know who spawn is, is because I had the Xbox version of soul caliber 2 growing up, spawn was a guest character

+Marco Palomba people who bought the gamecube version had link as a guest character
trevon444 yep, but wasn't Necrid a special feature as well?
+Marco Palomba necrid was on all versions of the game
Ethan Taugner oh, ok. Thought I would have gladly traded Spawn for Link...great game, great memories...
Malcom's Devil voice is incredible.
I am now convinced that this was a reworked sequel to the Mask. I am also convinced that Son of the Mask was a reworked sequel to this.

@@cjwrench07 Considering how kickass the spawns costume design was it feels really out of place in this movie.
Jebu911 yeah, the practical suits were all great. For me, it was Leguizamo’s Violator suit that really impressed me the most.

Ehhhhh, relax, guy!
What happened to Spawn? Deadpool gets a good movie, why can't Spawn?
Not a movie tho.
It was a HBO cartoon.

All these years and I had NEVER noticed the Clown's face on that air freshener. lol
+balgus82 Same. But I suck at Easter Egg stuff like that. To be fair I don't think I had seen Apocalypse Now when I last saw Spawn.
+balgus82 That makes two of us!!

Just the wife. Cyan wasn't born yet. In fact, she's Wanda and Terry's child. Al was actually impotent.
In the movie Cyan is Al's daughter. In the TV show Al was impotent. In the comics Wanda was pregnant right before Al's last mission, they got into an argument, he hit her and she miscarried.
@@geoffreysorkin5774 the fuck? 😳
@@animechic420 in the comics Al belonged in Hell because he was a bad person. He redeems himself over the course of the comics and becomes a hero. The studio didn’t want to have a first film where Al is a villain protagonist, so they made him a hero who went to hell for being a killer soldier.

Apparently Todd wants to make a reboot, we'll see, cause he's been saying this shit for years.
Fun fact: Nicol Williamson also played the Nome King in "Return to Oz" and Badger in 1996's "Mr. Toad's Wild Ride".
Nicol Williamson, also played Merlin in Excalibur, his most defining role. Check it out. It's pure 80's cheese, and pure class as well.
He’s great in “The Cheap Detective” a very funny film.

12:28. "Set your guns to NOT even close." Good god how that needs to be the tagline for the NEXT Star Wars film!

He should have said it looks like Doom 3.
82 likes!? Really? Was it worth the time and effort to create 82 different profiles just the make your own comment look good?
It does look like a pre-rendered intro video of a 90s game. Or in a less lucky situation, the entirety of an FMV game (that is probably made of quick-time events as gameplay).

+Rachel Kozlowski FUCKING MILLENNIALS!!! the movie
I'm always confused when in movies and shows the Devil wants Armageddon to happen. I highly doubt that he hasn't read the Bible, so I would think that the Devil would want to put off the end of days as much s possible. He's got a sweet deal.
It's due to the misbelief that Satan is a ruler of the damned instead of just an overseer.
Wow. And I thought ACTUAL Christianity was fucking insane.
+Albus Kane Right?
What I mean is that he has a sweet deal now. He gets to torture all the souls he wants in Hell and make peoples lives go to crap through subtle means on Earth. There's no reason he should want Armageddon to happen so soon. It's not like he's being tortured in Hell.
I swear. The Devil is one of Malcolm's best roles.
He's hilarious XD
It’s funny how the cartoon is more mature and serious than the movie is

Yep.
+Juan CL Correction, slightly better. I fact I hesitate to use the word "better" as that implies it was good :P
13:36 I actually pissed my pants laughing at The Clown cheerleader dance.

Keep better control of your bladder.
I just got to that part as I read this!!!😂😂😂
Doug may not know it, but The Violator acts exactly the same as in the comics, he did make all these porn and fart jokes
The Violator was really the only good part of the movie. The acting and writing were both good for his character. Jason Wynn was terribly written, Cain was terribly written, and Spawn was terribly written. Cain was decently acted, but both Wynn and Spawn were acted almost as badly as they were written.
Glad they changed that in the HBO animated series
The "E" stands for evil.
In "man of steel" the "S" stood for hope.
The "M" from my avatar stands for wisdom. Right?
The "S" on Swayzak's torso (yes, that diamond is the Phobian character for "S") means control. Swayzak is always a control freak, even after he becomes a hero.
