Bro said “let’s make a channel about a game from 16 years ago” and honestly this is what I need right now. Obscure information about a game I’ve thought very little of in years
I think I remember at one point the Ganon:Olimar MU was considered 0:100 by the Ganons. I don't remember the specifics, but I'd imagine it was a combination of Ganon being overall bad, Olimar being overall good, and Pikmin latching on to Ganon means that some of his moves just suffered insane lag for hitting them off him. And I think to add on to Ness, I believe both he and Lucas had a bunch of Melee Ness' stats just copy and pasted and why Ness suffers bad grab shenanigans in Melee (not as bad as in Brawl though).
I remember that too! In the early stages of this video, I came across a Smashboards post of people complaining about the Ganon v Olimar matchup. I wasn't able to find anything super concrete(which is why I eventually settled on Marth v Ness) but I had no idea that people hated the matchup THAT much.
second on Ganon:Sheik being 0:100, I don't remember the specifics but wasn't chain basically unbeatable as ganon? Also I seem to remember Ganon:ICs being busted from desynced blizzards.
@@nickmacleod2368 Been getting a TON of people saying Ganon v Sheik is horrible. I didn't see anybody talking about that matchup while initially browsing Smashboards, but when you go out of your way to search for the matchup specifically? Yeah. It looks BAD bad. Might actually be worse than Marth v Ness. Love seeing so much discussion bout matchups :)
There were a few other 0:100 matchups before SDI was discovered. Olimar vs Luigi was considered unwinnable because jab-upb was 100% guarantee no matter the range or hitbox. Ike vs Ganon was like 95:5 because all Ike had to do was literally hold A and the autojabs would jabcancel the ganon all the way across the stage and end in a 1-2-3 jab combo.
I only just got around to watching this video and as someone who has made quite a few Brawl videos in recent years myself, I really enjoyed this. Very well edited and well researched. There are a few things I would like to bring up to add to the discussion. 1. The rabbit hole on forcing a ground release VS air release is extremely deep, even deeper than the video mentions. It’s impossible to go into everything but there is a lot of character specific shenanigans relating to forcing aerial grab releases (air releasing Meta Knight is one example funnily enough). I would also like to bring up that Yoshi can ground release characters in specific situations, I believe mainly when you mash out of his grab quickly enough. 2. A mistake in the video is that it states that the player has a 31 frame advantage when ground releasing Ness/Lucas which is not the case. It’s 11 frames (21 in Bowser’s case). The average ground release is 30 frames and Ness/Lucas’ are 40 frames. 3. Another important aspect with the chain grab is that Marth’s pummel is fast enough and has enough hitstun to the point that he can always prevent characters from air releasing. While Pummels can force ground releases, it cannot completely prevent an air release if it lacks a sufficient amount of hitstun compared to the frame data of the pummel. Marth’s has good enough frames to always prevent Ness from air releasing as long as the Marth doesn’t mess up. 4. Marth isn’t the only character who can force Ness into this infinite, a few other characters can do it too with that massive frame advantage. The reason why it’s so bad against Marth specifically is that Marth has decent grab range and he can usually either grab Ness standing or with a short walk in a worst case scenario, not to mention that Marth does super well against Ness elsewhere in the matchup. Lucas isn’t as screwed because he slides further away when getting chain grabbed and he has better tools elsewhere to at least challenge Marth. And those are the main things. I could certainly say more, I have researched this game a ton and I love sharing information about it but I’ll leave it here. I really enjoyed the video and I look forward to seeing what this channel has in store in the future.
This is a dream come true. To find someone finally posting high quality content on my favorite game of all time. Thank you kind sir and I hope to see more in the future take care
The streets have been demanding well-written highly produce competitive brawl content, so thank you for delivering. And you’re absolutely right that the history of brawl feels more like the history of metaknight. Hearing about the ins-and-outs of other match-ups is so cool. The closest thing we have right now is whenever coney feels like talking about brawl DDD
Yes!! I had recently noticed there was very little actual Brawl content beyond Metaknight retrospectives or super passionate deep-dives(which both RULE but are hard to recommend to those who are more "casual" players). I try to walk the tight rope of "casual friendly, but not afraid to dive in a little." Seems to be working! Thank you for watching, commenting, and the kind words :)
Incredible stuff! I am pleased to see someone speaking about Brawl beyond the surface level write-offs that you often see when the topic comes up in videos (Tripping, MK, IC's, etc.) Looking forward to more!
As a Fox main during brawls run, the sight of Brawl Pikachu's uncanny stare and the sound of it's down throw, trigger some primordial flight instinct in me all these years later..
i could never play brawl competitively myself, but ive been fascinated by it since m2k dropped his tier list in 2020. so many characters have these crazy options that nobody talks about and i kinda wish they did. if i could say one thing - i wish you elaborated more on what makes the matchup worse for ness than lucas, since ness is considered a better character. im assuming its because lucas’ aerials have better range but i have no idea. outside of that this video is really good and im excited to see more videos from you, the thing about how grabs work and wario getting grab-released is something i never knew about
I'll try to cover this in another video(or maybe a Short?) but it boils down to movement. Lucas has a tether recovery, making him much more survivable offstage. Lucas' PK Thunder also goes almost 2x the length of Ness' PK Thunder, giving him significantly more options to recover. In neutral, it's still a reallllly bad matchup for Lucas but his aerials are quicker & easier to space while PK Fire gives him more options to wall out approaches. Lucas also has a lot more crazy movement tech(I'll be going over this more in my next video) which can make it more difficult to grab on bigger stages. Like I said, it's still not a LOT, but it's certainly a lot harder for Marth to force a grab on Lucas than Ness. Thanks for the question!! Hope I cleared it up a bit for you :)
@@Brawlternativeah thanks for responding! that makes a ton of sense, saw the new video and i can see how in some niche cases he’d have some cool options to get out of marth’s effective range, even if its only for a short while longer

Wow this is really sick to see! As someone who plays brawl competitively nowadays, it's really nice to see content like this. Personally, while Ness vs Marth is a horrible matchup, I'm not sure if it is definitively the worst, with matchups like meta knight vs ganon, olimar vs ganon, falco vs ganon, dedede vs donkey kong, and stuff ilke that. It is up there for sure and can definitely be argued for, but I think these are all up there as well.
I absolutely agree! I used to host local basement tourneys in 2014 and DLA would attend & crush us all, so I'm a bit Ganon pilled. In the end, it's up for contention and I think that's great!
@@BrawlternativeDLA is a local legend and definitely changed my mind about the ganon:oli match-up. I don't think he took any games, but it was scarier than it looks on paper.
I was actually expecting the "worst matchup" to be Ness vs. Rosalina in smash 4, but this matchup is pretty terrible too. Ness just can't catch a break 😂
Definitely not as bad as Marth Ness in brawl While it's near impossible to avoid being grabbed in general, it's a little more doable to avoid getting put offstage without a jump, as not every hit situation will result in that. Still very bad though Corrin vs Ness in smash 4 was arguably just as bad as Rosalina due to Corrin having a nuclear counter that almost always killed Ness when he tried to recover
@fruitsalad2379 corrin destroys ness but it's a lot harder to land a counter than it is to use gravitational pull, and if you miss you're in a bad situation. Honestly I'd say outranging Ness with your sword is a bigger factor in the matchup
I saw this video and i knew instantly it was gonna be marth ness. I accidentally did the chain grab to a friend and made him stop playing ness That matchup is like 120:-20 its so damn lopsided
@@heavylobster4339 I dunno man. Brawl has the healthier top 1 pick by, in my opinion, an undeniably fat margin. That trickles down to average level of being asstastic being lower, though the peaks are no doubt higher.

These videos are bringing back nostalgia. I'm always amazed that you bring up obscure facts that even I didn't know about. Ivysaur's grab release being different vs. R.O.B. depending on direction is funny to me. Bowser's grab release > up air on Jigglypuff is always the first thing I tell people about when I tell them how broken Brawl is though.

great video. would love to see a video on icies at some time, or even just the icies/mk matchup; back when i was still following smash actively, i watched some late-meta brawl sets and was astonished and horrified at how top level icies/mk was not playing the game at all for 3 minutes and then someone losing neutral and dying instantly
It's so funny because it was apparently very common in high level play to gentleman's against the infinite but me, you, and a ton of other comments all remember that one Marth in our region absolutely stomping the Ness players. Funny universal memory at Brawl locals for sure
Awesome video, the editing is great. I've always simultaneously wondered how the grab release system worked (like, I remember seeing Sheik's release to up smash on MK), but also never bothered to look it up myself, so this was a good way to learn. When I first learned about it, I remember thinking "does the 'hold up to air escape' thing not exist in Brawl? It's in at least Melee."
Wait... This is your first video?! I checked your channel to look for some videos to binge because I was enjoyed this one and didnt find any others. The production quality is amazing! Turning notifications on, cant wait to see future videos!
I only started to become really good (well not good, but started winning locals) at the game after ten years of practice so there are things people could do to me that I did not know about but saw all the time. I got a lot better at analyzing what being good at fighting games took and how to do research after Project M came out and we got a huge amount of cool Melee content. But seeing this video made me realize why I was so confused every time I got grabbed in the Brawl days and its really interesting to think about that combined with all the other jank that fades into the background of the Meta Knight discourse.
I just subscribed. I’m a Brawl apologist. While I put the most time into Melee. I feel like Brawl gets an unfair rap. 1. The dominance of Meta Knight is not a bad thing. The character is extremely fun to play and hype to watch. It’s my understanding that the mk ditto is possibly the most high level match in all of Smash. 2. Melee has 12 viable characters. Brawl has 10. Not much of a difference there. 3. Brawl also has advanced techniques 4. Just because it’s slower isn’t necessarily bad. It’s just different. 5. Finally anyone who’s played in any sort of competitive fashion whether irl or even online. Knows that like Melee the game is extremely hard. You can’t just pick up MK and start winning.
Tbf I'm pretty sure brawl died because ice climbers were starting to get more popular. Mk was fine. Also brawl has less viable characters with a bigger roster which makes it more of a difference
> The character is extremely fun to play and hype to watch wasn't part of the issue that meta knight was actually an incredibly good camper who was extremely unfun to contest due to his random coding jank?
Bumping this comment. Brawl Central is the modern content/community hub of SSBB and they're an absolute joy to work with. A collab would be incredible.
So happy to see a Brawl-focused channel. It was my first exposure to Smash and a lot of the characters in the roster as a kid. Just hearing the music feels so cozy.

Yo, nice to see another Smash video essayist popping up this year! I'm working on my first Smash video essay right now and this video just gave me a huge boost in motivation.
You know what? I can appreciate a content creator saying "here's an obscure detail from a game that's..." (one google search later) "...16 years old." And then just making a video about it. Like it's unironically kind of inspirational.
Brawl is in such a specific place in media because EVERYONE on the planet owned a Wii and almost everyone in my age range(Brawl’s peak) has played the game. But there were no content creators, barely any footage from early Brawl at all, and despite being one of the most popular game franchises of all time no one was really talking about it on here. I love this game! It has so much wacky stuff, and i love talking about it. Thanks for stopping by :)

What if it’s a ditto matchup
lol lets be on a team
Are you the guy who famously got every character in Ultimate to 0 GSP each, simply because you were that bad?
I also recall Ganon:Sheik being considered 0:100 by a number of people.
second on Ganon:Sheik being 0:100, I don't remember the specifics but wasn't chain basically unbeatable as ganon?
I really enjoyed the video and I look forward to seeing what this channel has in store in the future.
did not expect such a high quality video from such a small channel, thanks youtube algorithm
In-depth non-Melee videos are always so fascinating to me. It feels like learning Melee all over again. Good work.
Well paced, great editing, understandable at any level, informative, this has it all. Awesome vid
Considering how many channels are dedicated to melee or ultimate content, it’s refreshing to see someone cover brawl stuff
This is a dream come true. To find someone finally posting high quality content on my favorite game of all time. Thank you kind sir and I hope to see more in the future take care
Thanks for such kind words :) new video coming soon! Gunna drop sometime in the middle of next week :)
Wait, a new Brawl channel made just now? A legacy smash channel dedicated to something OTHER THAN MELEE???
COUNT ME THE HELL IN!!!
huge production value & quality research & communication for a small channel - i was here in the first 500
I love Brawl so much, the moment I saw ness on the thumbnail I knew Marth would be the character talked about. This video is great!
189 subscribers! Got damn the production quality is great this is some asumsaus tier visuals.
damn did they really get that much more in an hour

I love watching sub 30 minute heavily edited video essays on a game I’ve never played
seems like more of a skill issue
a skilled roy can beat any fox
Skilled ness can beat any marth
Choosing to play Brawl is a skill issue, yes.
*smash @@TheEvilCheesecake
Yeah, an issue of skill being borderline irrelevant.
I just assumed this was a much larger channel until I was the sub count. You are going to blow up
Just discovered this channel and it's so nice. It's like having a Brawl variant of ASUMsaus, and I love that.
i could never play brawl competitively myself, but ive been fascinated by it since m2k dropped his tier list in 2020. so many characters have these crazy options that nobody talks about and i kinda wish they did.
if i could say one thing - i wish you elaborated more on what makes the matchup worse for ness than lucas, since ness is considered a better character. im assuming its because lucas’ aerials have better range but i have no idea. outside of that this video is really good and im excited to see more videos from you, the thing about how grabs work and wario getting grab-released is something i never knew about
I'll try to cover this in another video(or maybe a Short?) but it boils down to movement.
2:09 your vid showed up in my recommended 😭 I didn’t expect to see this tweet again, I got jumpscared
When making this video I remembered your tweet & thought throwing in an obscure reference like this from 4 years ago would be very funny. I still think it's very funny. Thank you for your service o7
@@Brawlternative LOL np, it was definitely funny. Great vid btw o7
I didn't even notice that you had only 32 subscribers. amazing vid that earned a sub even though i don't watch smash that much
This channel popped up over night and is like "remember brawl?" and just exploded lmao. Ofc the quality is insane too
Fantastic video! I love some good brawl posting. There is so much strange and fascinating stuff about this game that has been lost to time
I love seeing my M2K vs Ocean reaction clip show up in Brawl content
come back to brawl
thank you so much for your contribution to Brawl history!! I found that clip for the first time 10 years ago and I still think about it fairly often. I think it's one of the most important pieces of Brawl media out there. You're the best :)
me when my buddy's secret youtube channel ends up in my recommended:
Honestly glad to see a fuckin Brawl channel pop up for once. Every other damn game in the series has so much coverage but no one ever talks about Brawl because it's the slow one and the one with tripping and the one with the most broken fighter in the entire series' history. Godspeed dude, looking forward to more.
I entered the smash competitive environment with Sm4sh, so I missed out on what came before
Fortunately Melee's history always gets documented, but the same can't be said for Brawl
I'm so glad vidoes like this exist in 2024 honestly
Keep it up I'm looking forward to more content 👍
commenting for youtube algorithm, it’s pretty cool seeing immediate success in a youtube channel with only one video. gives me faith for this platform honestly
HIGH QUALITY BRAWL CONTENT? IN MY 2024?
WAKE ME UP. IM DREAMING.
Terrible choice. You do NOT want to wake up from this dream.
@@CommentPositionInformer Realest shit I've ever heard.
it's happening
Very happy to see a small channel blow up like this! Looking forward to more stuff
I always love the genre of videos: "I talk about something trivial that I spend an ungodly amount of time thinking about."
I was actually expecting the "worst matchup" to be Ness vs. Rosalina in smash 4, but this matchup is pretty terrible too. Ness just can't catch a break 😂
Definitely not as bad as Marth Ness in brawl
While it's near impossible to avoid being grabbed in general, it's a little more doable to avoid getting put offstage without a jump, as not every hit situation will result in that. Still very bad though
Corrin vs Ness in smash 4 was arguably just as bad as Rosalina due to Corrin having a nuclear counter that almost always killed Ness when he tried to recover
Bad Brawl matchups are next-level cancer compared to anything in Smash 4, even Bayo vs. Ganon, which is pretty darn bad.
I accidentally did the chain grab to a friend and made him stop playing ness
That matchup is like 120:-20 its so damn lopsided
@@heavylobster4339 I dunno man. Brawl has the healthier top 1 pick by, in my opinion, an undeniably fat margin. That trickles down to average level of being asstastic being lower, though the peaks are no doubt higher.
I don't even like Brawl but i'll always appreciate an opportunity to gain more obscure Smash knowledge. Especially when it's so well presented. Great video.
I really REALLY hope you keep making Brawl videos in this style. You built up the context to the MU reveal by explaining the game mechanics so well. Thanks for the great watch!
I love brawl so much dude. I had this exact same idea not too long ago and was waiting to get out of school so i could have more free time, but you're nailing it from right out the gate! Can't wait to see more from this channel adding to the love this game has been recieving recently. The Brawl Renaissance is here and I couldn't be more happy.
Thanks for the kind words! There's always time for you to contribute to the Brawl Renaissance as well :)
I would take lives to have more in-depth Brawl mechanical analysis like this. Godspeed.
You can expect more on the way soon :)

I wish I knew like one quarter of the things covered in this video when I was eight years old and just pressing buttons versus my older brother who claimed the c-stick was cheating.
This is such a high quality video. Criminal you don't have more subs.
To be fair, this is his first video, and it is less than a week old. It shouldn’t be long before he gets more subscribers.
These videos are bringing back nostalgia. I'm always amazed that you bring up obscure facts that even I didn't know about. Ivysaur's grab release being different vs. R.O.B. depending on direction is funny to me. Bowser's grab release > up air on Jigglypuff is always the first thing I tell people about when I tell them how broken Brawl is though.
your editing is nuts man
this is fantastic content. i knew instantly from the title alone what the matchup would be though lmao. good ol' competitive brawl days, i loved 'em so much
Absolutely crazy this is your first video. I went to your channel expecting a catalog of content, but this is it. Hold my sub, I'm looking forward to seeing more of you.
I’ve always wanted to learn about competitive brawl since I was too young to know about it when it was popular. This is perfect!
A brawl channel in 2024?
Absolutely love it.
That scrolling character emblem background is awesome, as is the rest of the editing! Glad to see this channel pop up, hope you keep making these :)
Having never played brawl competitively, learning anything about it is like glimpsing into some alternate timeline.
Fantastic video!
great video. would love to see a video on icies at some time, or even just the icies/mk matchup; back when i was still following smash actively, i watched some late-meta brawl sets and was astonished and horrified at how top level icies/mk was not playing the game at all for 3 minutes and then someone losing neutral and dying instantly
this matchup is brutal and ur editing is good im praying on ur success 🙏🙏
Before watching, Ness Marth, it was a common one in my region, the Ness refused to play other characters at the time
It's so funny because it was apparently very common in high level play to gentleman's against the infinite but me, you, and a ton of other comments all remember that one Marth in our region absolutely stomping the Ness players.
Crazy good content. Brawl is lowkey fascinating and cool as fuck. Looking forward to the next one
i mained snake and used to feel bad for his grab shenanigans but quickly got over it after getting chain grabbed myself by half the cast
The Marth chain grab is actually one of the first things I think of when it comes to competitive Brawl just because of how silly it is. Good video!
Love the use of “Begin” from Cosmic Psycho as the intro music. :) Great vid.
This editing is sooooooo good omg!!! Commenting for the algorithm
such a well edited video 🫡
I just subscribed. I’m a Brawl apologist. While I put the most time into Melee. I feel like Brawl gets an unfair rap.
1. The dominance of Meta Knight is not a bad thing. The character is extremely fun to play and hype to watch. It’s my understanding that the mk ditto is possibly the most high level match in all of Smash.
2. Melee has 12 viable characters. Brawl has 10. Not much of a difference there.
3. Brawl also has advanced techniques
4. Just because it’s slower isn’t necessarily bad. It’s just different.
5. Finally anyone who’s played in any sort of competitive fashion whether irl or even online. Knows that like Melee the game is extremely hard. You can’t just pick up MK and start winning.
Video dropping next week breaks down all the funky advanced tech in Brawl, hope to see you there :)
Tbf I'm pretty sure brawl died because ice climbers were starting to get more popular. Mk was fine. Also brawl has less viable characters with a bigger roster which makes it more of a difference
> The character is extremely fun to play and hype to watch
wasn't part of the issue that meta knight was actually an incredibly good camper who was extremely unfun to contest due to his random coding jank?
first firethepyro and now THIS? oh baby you just earned a sub
Keep up the good work, we need more videos/channels talking about Brawl more in-depth.

So happy to see a Brawl-focused channel. It was my first exposure to Smash and a lot of the characters in the roster as a kid. Just hearing the music feels so cozy.
love seeing high quality content of the absurdities of competitive brawl! got a lot of love for that game, feels good to see comprehensive breakdowns of the things we abused back then :D
Genuinely shocked it wasnt DK vs Dedede since there's absolutely nothing you can do, glad i didnt suffer alone

ROYALPEAR?!?!?
Pretty good video dude! It's cool to see someone making videos about these quirks in brawl.
Jesus christ ! Man I hope your channel grows, it's very promising !
