I like how the editing cuts off with random timing at the end of each of his sentences. Adds to the overall eccentricity of this video. Great review!
My Classic 30's my fave amp right now. It manages to sound "Fendery" using EL84s, but a Vox tone can easily be dialed in. Very impressive. And it eats dirt pedals, even "metal" ones, well. An amp that can do anything, basically.
This was a great review. "The chrome tip of my jack is getting all hot" is a pretty good soundbite.
Thanks for the review. I'm considering buying one of these used and your review is helping to convince me to go for it. Great demo and great hair. I would have killed for hair that good at your age. I'd kill for any at this point, lol.
As I have owned and played a Classic 30 for some time I've got to say that this review really captures what this amp is about. Absolutely matches my experience in general behaviour and in sound. Given you put this video's sound through a decent stereo system you get a very good impression of what this amp sounds like and you just have to decide whether you like it or not. And yes: it gets VERY hot and you can very easily or accidentally touch the metal chassis - so that does deserve mentioning.
8 years later, I’d love to see how his playing has evolved..
You should be helping Frodo, Pippin!
Oh give the guy a break. This is a great and thorough review and his playing is fantastic. Kudos to you, good sir!
I just received my Classic 30 and trying to get used to my first "big boy," grown up all tube amp. I am coming off a Vox Valvetronix and now will have to contend with pedals and such, which I have been looking forward to. Any suggestions on top 3 pedals? I am no shredder. I play Foo Fighters, RHCP, Beatles (of course), Prince, Nirvana, and Post Punk type stuff. It is a bit overwhelming, all these choices. Great vid. Thanks.
Great review man. I get so sick of clicking on amp demos and see in the description "Orange AD30 Demo with Tubescreamer, MXR Delay, Boss 6 band EQ, Electro Harmonix Reverb, BB Preamp and Boss Chorus. It's nice to see a review and actually hear how the amp sounds, without 150 effects.
That's some fine playing Sir!
Hey thanks man! My dad gave me his old Peavey so and youve given me some pretty cool sounds to play around with, I appreciate it! ^_^
You have great "presentation" and impressive technique. I hope you are still playing. I recently purchased a Peavey Delta Blues 1X15 thanks to good Demos like yours. Thanks again
By any chance, do you not like Mondays?
great demo Jesse, I have a classic 30 and I agree with many things you have said, but I love it don't be dispondent with any of the negative comments. you did a great job and I love your style and sound. Dave
Would this amp be loud enough for small venues, bar shows? And would it be loud enough for rehearsal with drums, bass, vocals, etc playing? Thanks
Excellent review. I like how you used different guitars and demonstrated the tones you could achieve for different styles. I have owned one of these since 2007 and i consider it a near-perfect amp - it's rugged and reliable, withstood hundreds of gigs with minimal maintenance, great tone, miles of clean headroom, takes well to pedals, cuts through a mix, real spring reverb, reasonable price, not too big or heavy but loud enough for most live situations, great all around gigging amp. Only thing now is the newer ones are made in China 😣.
I got this amp too and I have to say It's a very nice one. Loud enough to play on stages and it creates lovely sounds. Thanks for this nice review.
Sounds really good! The reverb... works. That's always a secondary on amps. Other than that is sounds near perfect. Loving that crunch. Replace the speaker maybe?
Love the variety of tones from the Westone, very underrated guitars.
Excellent demo and playing! I have a Delta Blues 2/10 and have been looking for a Classic 20 or 30 used and USA made. 20 for size and weight would be perfect!
I hear ya, but this series and the 5150's and 6505's are amazing and are road worthy big time. Peavey is kind of like the Wal-mart of gear though, but you cant deny these amps
i was expecting a 4o year older bearded dude
@TheYes95 The PRE GAIN Controls the input volume level of the Lead channel and the POST GAIN Controls the OVERALL volume level of the Lead channel. The final level adjustment should be made after the desired sound has been achieved.
Hope this helps - Michael.
Aww man you showed all the settings for the amp except for the outro jam!! Do you know what the settings are??
A technician told me they are quite fiddly to do repairs on, which means they take longer time, therefore higher costs. Just to bare in mind...
***** uhhh,no but my mesa sounds better than your fender, lol
Interesting, we have two from 1995, no issues with either and they've been gigged
The boost added quite a lot of mids. Great for solos!
Glad I snagged a USA made Classic 30. Great amp. The Classic 30 ii has a standby as well.
i have one of these amps..but i chose the head with a 2x12 cab, since i thought the combo sounded a little too boxy for me, its plenty loud enuff for most gigs. and very versitile. the reverb he complained about actually sounds better in the head version and the heat problem can be solved with a small fan behind it, but i think it's suppose to get hot, since i've noticed the longer its on the better it sounds..the head version is also more versatile, diff spkr cominations.its either it or my twin
You look like the late Marc Bolan. Great chops!
I like the simplicity. For mine I upgraded the speaker to a Celestion anniversary. I changed to a modern reverb tank but I will go back I think to 2 spring tank.
nice guitar playing and you've got the real EHX logo face!
and nice review dude, well done
And it sounds absolutely awesome hen you pair it with an orange PPC112 cab. Massive!
best review of a Peavey on youtube thank you
the best peavey amp demo !
Peavey makes some great amps. I love posting video reviews of the amps I get to work with. Have a great day!
#peaveyamps
They can be had much more reasonably second hand. Used one yesterday to try out a couple of pedals, and was sorely tempted by the price. If I hadn't wanted the guitar I was playing MORE, it would have gone home with me! Fully agree with you on the volume- it was way loud, even in a fair sized shop. I couldn't argue with the tone, though! Someday, it'll be mine!
*This guy demonstrates one thing: You gotta be real careful when selecting a dentist and choose one with the skill and caring to properly match composite fillings with your existing enamel.
*Seven tubes (without a fan) gettin' real hot? Imagine that.
*Hairdo? Actually pretty good for what it is (Dylan circa-whatever?) if you're gonna go that route.
*Peavey's listening: Power switch now metal, knob panel now employs white lettering on dark-matte background.
*Loved the groove at 1:32.
Excellent review and nice haircut!
Where did he find the westone guitar. I have not seen one of those in over 15 years.
Brilliant Demo.
Is there any issue with there being no Standby switch ?
@MrWeedpatch
Thank you for the positive feedback.
The Crate is a great amp and is well designed for tweaking.
Although I filmed and directed this review it's actually Jesse K. - a young 16 year old Dutch guitarist who is in front of the camera. Using my experience as a professional guitartist (for most of my life), I have helped him with his guitar playing etc.. I hope you enjoy his review of another amp.
I have the delta blues and it is AWSOME
Thanks for showing what the amp is fully capable of instead of just Blues or a little Hard Rock
Hi, I enjoyed the demo. What Ibanez guitar were you using? The gray one with the humbuckers in it?
Actually the boost switch gives it more gain. It becomes apparent when you crank it up.
Terrific playing Wolfmother Jr 😎
Great review!! Really enjoyed that. Peavey stuff is always flawed somehow, and I never need to look far, but this looks like one of their more successful disasters. You did get some good sound out if it, which is more than most of their stuff is capable of. Here's hoping you don't get any third degree burns or witness spontaneous combustion mid-gig. Good luck with your very promising career.
Fuck the critics, this demo was great. Thanks.
Thanks for the review. Been considering one.
Much agreed man. This and the 6505 are awesome.
Nice demo! Great playing, too. Keep it up, Brother!
@VisualThoughts4U
Hi thanks ! Finally a great review with the exposition of Good AND BAD points of the amp ! Really great and objectiv !
I have to say that the "heat problem" repel me a bit.
I was intended to use it for live and rehearsal situation, but I don't want to loose a hand on a burning amp.
Do you think that, because of that problem, It is not recommended to use it for gig ?
(I'm looking for a blues rock amp that love pedals).
Thanks !
Kind Regards Amigo !
Thaxs. More reviews coming soooooon!! :-)
Rock and Roll
Een van de beste demo's die ik ooit heb gezien, hoe lang speel je al?
Great demo of a great amp (the whole series are great!) You sir, remind me of a young Rory Gallagher! Great review with really valid points!
I enjoyed your demo man.
An all Valve amp That sounds better than an all tube amp. I think I will start calling tubes valves like our friends across the pond. Seriously Thanks for the demo. Try to eliminate the sound of the pick scraping the strings. Cheers
Cool demonstration. I'm thinking about buying one, maybe the 30w classic one, maybe the 50w. From Peavey, I have just the bandit 112. And the Valve King 50w? Is it a good choice?
Hi jesse.
How long does you tubes last in the peavey?? .. If you amp gets so warm the EL84 and PT must be giving a lot of heat..
The classic 30 should have a screen voltage of ~ 325V and is biased at ~ 24.5 mA which should be class AB at around 66% dissipation according to weber bias schedule.. It could be a resistor in the bias circuit is a bit old and you get a less negative grid bias, hence more dissipation at idle..
Nice hair. Do you play with a band? We'd all like to know more about you.
His hair cut is awesome!
Nice playing mate. Good work!
That's a low-mids boost ;) It increases the volume but only because it's an EQ boost.
the best review on teh net...congrats.
What is the black double cut guitar it looks like David gulmours bill Lewis guitar
Great playing! A bit similar to a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe, ay? Definitely SRV ish -ay?
Great job on the video. i'm in doubt about a Peavey Classic 30 and the Vox AC30VR. which one do you think is better?
Greetings from Brazil
What's the clean headroom like? Plenty of it or does it break up pretty quick?
Great review, thanks for sharing. cracking little amp.
Do you still have it, nine years later?
Nice review and I like your playing! Amazing!
how did you have the eq set at 6:19
i can select the drive with a foot pedal? this amp have input for a foot?
how loud is this amp?? im looking for an affordable tube amp that is decently loud, i have to play a semi large gig and i want to be heard any imput?
this kid knows amps and how to play....i have a classic 30.....its the perfect gigging amp....not too big and heavy, but sounds it
Good demo, my best regards from Chile!!
Just ordered one of these used. Hope i like it. By the way you have good skills dude
does anyone know how it would cope with fx pedals...most of mine are high/ish quality and all are analogue EHX, Dunlop etc.
agreed!! very good review. he plays incredibly and has good tone!
I hear ya, but this is a killer amp. Great cleans, and the gain is great for blues.
Dry and crunchy. mmmmmm. Cheers! They can chug too.
he has skill, well done
You're right about the pilot light being a skewed decade from the rest of the amp's style, lol! Mine does have a chrome power switch, hmm. You play well enough so that the amp sounds great in "boost" mode; but with me, I call it the "mud" mode...but then again, I could play thru Hendrix's rig, if I could go back to 1967, and make IT sound like mud,so anyway...xD Good review.
Well done. Great playing!
Awesome video thank you
Is this good for Alternative rock to Punk rock... ?
Good review and great playing.
I cant blame you. I stick to my judgement about BC Rich :P the Roland's a nice little practice amp, but there's plenty of higher-range peaveys that are fantastic. The classic is probably my favourite, got the old 50 head & 4x12 cab, just gorgeous. For metal, obviously 5150/6505, peavey vyper tube sounds fantastic for a modelling amp, its just a brill version of the spider :P but its worth trying some of them out, regardless of what you play :)
Very nice sounding amp
does your peavey overheat?mine after 1 hour get s very hot!
@jerseystringer
that's not true, their guitars from the 80's are super unique, and have features that were way ahead for the time, like a coil split that allowed to pick a sound between single coil and humbucker.
The Peavey 5150 is maybe their signature product, and was released before the dual rectifier by mesa...
+ this amp, although it has a tweed covering, sounds nothing like a fender amp, more a unique blend between marshall and fender;)
Nice review. Thanks for the info!
Does anyone know what that black guitar he plays is?
A Westone Thunder (I think), it looks like a "vintage" late 70's early 80's model.
It's an Ibanez.
VisualThoughts4U And also a Westone Thunder and also a Strat
good job! nice tone!
Hmmm both great amps.. I think the peavey drive channel sound a bit better but the carvin does have a pretty sweet clean sound. Both are EL84 amps and have less of that fender 6l6 tube sound going on. I would though get the new peavey classic 30 updated version. New transformers, the old PT was a very small underated one that got insanely hot. THe new seem to have a fatter stack.. Also peavey ditch the 3 sided sandwich PCB which is a pain to work with for repairs..
Look like Jimi, play like Jimi.. did I exagerates?!! I love your playing man!!!
Nice demo...dude can play
Hopefully you know your way around your amp before you play a gig with it, so I don't see the problem with the white text against the chrome. Other than that good review.
