I bought a Peavey Classic 30 new, sight unseen several years ago. It arrived damaged, and I was underwhelmed by the fake tweed Tolex, so I sent it back and bought a Fender BDR from my local store. Now, I've just bought a 1999 Laney LC30, which, like the Peavey, has 3 x 12AX7 (or ECC83 in the UK), and 4 x EL84, and it sounds absolutely superb. If the Peavey has a similar circuit, then I can see it being a great amp. Regarding "colour", I hear my Laney as "3D", whereas other amps are more "2D". The Peavey in this video sounds very good!
thank you for the view and the kind words. I always wanted to try a Laney, I have always heard good things about them . I am not much of a fan If the tolex on the peavey . I just don't look at it.. lol.. I may cover it in black or brown someday. thanks again. Jake
Thanks for the review. Just picked up one of these on a whim at my local Sam Ash going out of business sale, used. Very happy so far and excited hearing the sounds you’re getting too. Thanks for the thoroughness and the sweet playing!
you are very welcome. congratulations on your purchase too! nice little amps and versatile as well. keep on picking and ty for the view and kind words! Jake
@@guitarhoarder1972 actually my first tube amp at the age of 48, as I grew up in the shredder era where everyone had solid-states. getting back into playing a lot recently... this amp is giving me some of those mystery sounds I never heard thru my old amps
@@guitarhoarder1972 Bit of an unrelated question- do you have a stool recommendation for playing/practice? I see you have a few. I took the arms off my office chair but I’m pretty sure that it’s causing me shoulder strain in my strumming arm for some reason. Thanks!!
@MarkEBKNY Hey, Mark, that is a great question ! Honestly, I really never think about it too much, but if I'm uncomfortable, i will change stooldls or chairs. Something you may want to try is using a foot stool or a footrest under your right foot if you strum with your right hand . I have seen classical players use this technique, etc. That is always another option as well. hold your guitar in classical position. I am right-handed, and I will often rest the guitar on my right leg, but depending on the guitar size, I will change to left leg or even classical position. I hope this helps, and I hope your strumming arm feels better. if it hurts, change things up so you don't inflict more damage. Ty for the question . Jake
Thanks Jake that is helpful. Classical position seems to make the other shoulder hurt hahaha. Gonna try the footstool and maybe shop for a nice padded stool too
The Peavey Classic 30 has been my main gigging amp for over 10 years and I love it. I always get compliments from the sound men because it blends nicely in the mix. Very versatile amp. Good video.
Love the classic range! Had a mate that owned a classic 100 that I never heard, whilst former band mate used a classic 50. For modern high gain it didn’t quite cut, but overall an incredible amp across pristine harmonic rich cleans, and some proper vintage high gain. Would buy one if cashed up in a heartbeat. Thanks mate! Cheers
Meat and potatoes work horse amplifier. the only thing NOT to like about them is the weight. I'm older now though. Thinking solid state for my next band. Maybe a Quilter Aviator.
Had one, years ago …. Small amp, thought it would be great for use in church. If cranked, it was something special. Of course I got ran out of town! Too much juice for most players is my verdict.
My buddy has one and he definitely is a person who what’s what he doesn’t have. I have a fender blues deluxe reverb, and I think that Peavy 30watt is fantastic. The only thing my amp has is it says fender instead of Peavy. Also the Peavy is a little lighter and easier to move than my 40watt.
Just got mine today it growls. I just grabbed a marshall head. I love it. But this might be my amp! We'll see next week i could saying it's the worst amp ever made.
I have only played this one a few times. I do enjoy the tone so far, it is just different from a lot of my other tube Amps. it like pedals, too! best of luck, and thanks for the view and the nice comment! Jake
it's different for sure , I have been playing tele and strats through it and I think it sounds better with singles. humbuckers make it muddy fast..certainly not a dumble. lol
Its nothing but cheap Peavey JUNK. Its old and obsolete and a good player would never be caught with that amp. I pick amps by the genre being played and the size of the venue.
thanks for the view and your opinion, I did not say it was the best amp on planet earth. lol . Most pros use dummy cabs without speakers. In today's world most pros that travel rent amps when they get there. I do realize my playing is not great anymore thanks to multiple sclerosis, but I can assure you of one fact, I have probably tripped over more amps than more people will ever own in a lifetime in my 46 years of playing and collecting . best of luck . Jake
Maybe we're both a little wonky, but I get the color blue too from the Peavey amps (Stereo Chorus 400, and Heritage VTX, LOVE these amps! ) Changed a few chips in the preamps to more modern, which delivered a bit more top end and eliminated what I felt was a bit too much "shrillness"(?) in the mid range. Replaced RC4558 WITH NE5532, AND OPA2134. COST ME LIKE $10! The newer chips have a flatter, broader frequency response, and they just pop out and into the Peavey circuit boards on those models!
I agree. I shat on my solid state peavey renown 400 during our between two amps. I really love peavey gear. From the sp 3s to your tube amps.

Real Rock'n'Roll Amp, love mine.
The problem is Peavey not Fender.
Underrated Amp.

classic 30 is a reliable workhorse. if you can't make it sound great.....user error@@guitarhoarder1972
You probably think a JCM800 is "old and obsolete".
SHOULD USE YOUR EARS EVERY AMP IS DIFFERENT AND EVERYONES NEEDS AND EARS ARE TOO!
