I love Peavey’s "lightning bolt,” logo. In the 90’s they tried to “modernize,” their logo with the “block letter," logo and people didn’t like it. They changed it back not only due to Hartley Peavey’s personal preference, but also due to public feedback.
Good video man. I've owned lots of Peavey amps since the 70s. I bought a new Classic 30 last year $900 now (darn inflation) they have changed a few things. Made in China now, Midnight 60 speaker sounds very rich, tubes are JJs and in a cage, the front went back to the design like yours except the classic 30 is on the bottom. The logo looks like Star Trek to me and it's cool. Now this little amp is the best work horse for its size. It beats out the Blues Junior, the Ac 30 and the Origin as far as I am concerned. I can't believe I am just now seeing this video after 11 years. Maybe Peavey saw it to and took your changes and put them in the amp.
I have done the "Blue Mod" on several Peavey Classic 30's, Classic 50's and Delta Blues. They are all the same basic schematic and tone stack parts are the same. I liked the Sprague Orange Drop caps best. It turns these amps into little "tone monsters". It takes some of that 'brittle edge' off and 'opens up the sound' more. Bigger physical sized caps = bigger tone. Well worth the Mod.
Hi. I've done a lot of blue mods, but selectively and improved the idea imo. Speaker is really a must. I changed to Celestion V30 because I found it really cheap. 2. Input mod is the way to improve clarity of sound. 3. In my experience C4 is the key to get the strong bottom, but 680 or 820pf make it also boomy. The amount of bass at V2B is still to high for the amount of input level at that stage and it clips the bass not the mids. That's why I changed the cathode cap C15 to 4.7uF. :)
A real (English) Celestion Vintage 30, really makes this sucker pop. And better tubes (whatever you like), it also sounds nice into a JCM 800/900 4/12 cabinet.
I'm guessing that you have never heard a Classic 30 through a JBL K120. I would bet it would change your mind. Of course my K120 is not in the classic 30 chassis but in it's own cabinet built by a guy with an Ebay site building them out of his work shop. Shout out to TRUTONE (single 12", closed back). You've also probably not heard a C30 through a Marshall 4x10 cab either. I really hope you do some day. Again, speaker not in the C30 chassis and there are 4 speakers compared to one but I wanted mention that as a possible option when chasing down your sound. I cut the cable from the chassis to the speaker in the chassis of my C30 and installed a female phone jack on the wires going into the chassis and a male phone plug on the wires going to the speaker. That way I can use the chassis speaker or unplug that speaker and plug in a cable from any cabinet I choose. My all time favorite is the JBL. But I only have one. The Marshall 4x10 cabs, I have two. And I can't tell you how amazing it sounds with one 4x10 cab hooked to my chassis jack mod and the other hooked to the extension speaker jack on the chassis and the speaker cabs stacked. You have to feel it. These cabinets a getting hard to find on Ebay and I hope many of you get the chance to hear one. Anyway, mix it up! I remember working with a traveling club band in the late 70's using a Music Man head with an Acoustic 8x10 cabinet. Anyone else done that?
I too wasn't too sure about which speaker to choose. I did a lot of research and reading online and liked what I heard about the Private Jack. I haven't tried the others you mention but I like what I am hearing with the PJ and I don't have any regrets with my choice.
The eminence speaker? Maybe. Power tubes don't affect tone in 99% of cases. The only power tube swap I've ever heard make more than a barely audible difference is putting Mallards in a classic Marshall. If you want a mellower drive sound, just swap the drive channel 12AX7 for a 12AT7... you don't have to risk the amp. Send me your peavey logo... I'll put it on any newer peavey with that altered font. I dig that old look.
If you haven't tried putting a 5751 tube in the V1 position do so now. It really brings the pre-amp / clean channel to life. And yes, the new classics are ugly as sin. I've got an early Classic 50 with no EFX loop. Get a Sovtek 12AX7LPS for the V3 position (PI). Also you can get a replacement reverb tank from amplified parts. Get a 3 spring MOD and you're all set on reverb. There are a LOT of different speakers you can try. I'm playing on a Jensen Falcon and it's VERY nice. But I'm putting a pair of Jensen Electric Lightnings in it next and I'll move the Falcon to an external cab. Also the more I see of the classic 30 the more I like my classic 50. Cage built right in, cooling fan to keep the tubes cool, 2x12 or 4x10 speakers, etc. Basically the same amp, just everything seems a little bit better in the 50.
Hi LincolnFStern, I have a delta blues 210. It’s the same circuitry as Classic30 but with 2x10” speaker. For C50 with 4x10, what is your idea about speakers. Are the blue marvels work well in 10 inch or you would upgrade? I know a lot of good 12” speakers but not 10 inch. I’m among for jazz with smoothest possible tone while being pretty transparent.
Tried JJ in my C30. The preamp sound much better with ElectroHarmincs. Much more creamy sound then JJ that sound hard and compressed. But the JJ EL84 works great.
I had one of these older Classic 30's years ago. I took the logo off. 2 screws. Doesnt fit that amps looks. Then after about 2 years of jamming with the amp. Sold it. Bought a Fender blackface Vibrolux Reverb. Sold it. Bought a used Blues Junior. Traded my dad a 1977 Traynor YGM 3 Guitar Mate. Never getting rid of this one. All hand wired. Easy to work on. A couple simple mods...unreal little 20 watt Marshall killer.
I'm buying a Classic 50 and the first thing I was glad to see was the logo was removed. Apparently the same marketing exec from the 80's is still there.
I have changed the tubes to JJ's and I put a celestian hellatone speaker in it..love the tone. haven't done the blue mod yet. maybe wil I love to tone I get from it now, reverb, I know its weak, if I want any, in my fender amp I turn it to 2,peavey I turn it to 4, sounds ok
Oh boy, am I glad to come across this video as I am looking to take the same path with my C30 !. Firstly, may I ask why you went for the Private Jack ?. I have agonised over the Cannabis Rex, V30 and a few others but having heard your tones on Part 2, (which I came across first), it is definitely added to the list. Thanks for taking the time to post this vid. Gareth
As a long-time designer and artist, you are right on the money with that logo. Damn, that is ugly. Probably not great for business. People who may not be as knowledgable will often make initial decision to at the very least look at a brand based on the aesthetic. I bought one in spite of the brand. That's just me and my years as a creative director for an advertising agency. Maybe I am jaded.
I bought one of the first Classic 30s about 20 years ago, still have it. First mod I did, which improved the amp greatly, was to take off the ugly logo. Have an Eminence Wizard in mine. Love it. I too have a butterscotch Classic Vibe.
Check out my C30 TH-cam videos if you want to hear a few other c30 setups. I play mine now with a 212 cab. I also replaced the stock onboard speaker with a greenback clone.
I've heard about the 1/2 power mod that can be done on a Delta Blues by cutting certain pins off of two of the power tubes. Can a similar mod be done on the Classic 30 series?
Does making it sound better = making it more Fender like? I like the Peavey soul and yes, I'll take that awesome gold Logo. :Peavey TNT 15S, VTX Classic, Classic 30.
Hi,paesano the logo is great, the sound of the amp is good,but...the construction of the innards of that amp is miserable ! I'm a tech.I've worked on plenty of those.Dread them ! Hey,I see u not far from me...I'm in "Chat ". Viva L'italia amigo ! LOL
i unscrewed the logos off my gear when i found what kind of brass plated sob hartley's become....melia was the heart of the company, when she passed, peavey was never the same again.....so that's my two bits worth.
i dont think they should change their logo...its not a sports team; its music homey.does Heinz Ketchup change their logo? no....does Marlboro change their logo? no.
The latest version of the classic30 is way much better than the usa with its 3 part crappy pcb, now you have a standby, a real good speaker, NO MORE broken jumpers from the pcb, JJ poweramp tubes, ruby preamp tubes, ruby 4 spring reverb !!! The logo?? Well who cares about a logo , it doesn't make a difference on the sound ;)
the Peavey logo has been the same since the middle 1970s. they're not going to chang it. Just like Marshall has had the same logo forever. It's a highly distinguished symbol of amplification.
Peavey drew that logo in 1957, when he was 18yo and had just launched his guitar and amplifier company. It will never change.
Sorry but It is ugly
@@aurozappa305 It is. But still.
@@aurozappa305 It’s a matter of opinion really. I like both original lightning bolt and block letter style logos, but to each their own

Well I agree on the logo, needs reinventing to a classic style especially for amps that are called classics at least.
I like the focus on the mid range !
I changed my Classic 30 combo with the High Gain JJ's also... But.. I used a Celestion 25 watt green back... REALLY helped a Lot..

What is the Accutronics reverb model used in the Classic 30?
what speaker is in the classic 30 and classic 20. Trying find decent upgrade for old marshall vs15r was looking at eminence patriot 20 watt 8ohm.

would these mods apply to the delta blues amp or is it a better amp that needs less mods? thanx for uploading this instructional video.

you are soooo right about the logo!!!!!! spy vs spy ooooooh shit!!!
I think Peavey has a great logo. u crazy

i got a classic 20 thats older than me early 90s
Oh snap, don't let Hartley hear you trashing his logo

If you still have the logo,i'll take it! lol!
Sorry I don't
Ok!
Agreed with the logo. My Peavey badge is in the garbage.
"If it works, don't fix it." Someone put a Red Coat in the one I have. I hate it. I had a 90's previously that was stock.
