Fun Fact: Danny Ainge is one of the most talented high school athletes in history! He's the still the only high-schooler selected as a FIRST Team All American in Basketball, Baseball and Football ! 🤯 let that sink in...
When you said, he threw that pass with no fear of a turn over….that reminded me of story about Bird, told by another NBA HOF. In his rookie year when he was playing Bird for the first time…..Larry pulled up from way outside the three point line, closer to half court line than the three point line, said, “watch this,” and threw up an air ball. Bird then told the rookie, “I can do that, and still stay in the game….you do that and you’ll be on the bench.”
When you said, "That's beautiful," it summed up what I always said about Celtics basketball in the 80s. The low post game, played as a team... crisp passing... unselfish play...
@@ScottLovenberg With "fluidity" nothing was force. I wonder how youngsters cannot see how the game today changed for the worst. 80's was pure entertainment.
LOL@weird grace. I've never heard that put that way before, but in a way you're right. Larry wasn't always the smooth-as-silk player the way a Clyde Drexler or George Gervin was, but you're sooooooooo right about Bird's play that made him an almost insatiable watch. TRULY one of the greatest of the greats who could do it all at a high level.
Now you see why us older fans say it was fun to watch the NBA in the 70's and 80's. The passing, scrapping on the floor for the ball, and simply the unselfish play on the court. The players back then were just that, players, in today's game there really are no players left, just long ball shooters. The games decades ago were wrought with excitement, the hard fouls and occasional fight, players that would play through pain to help their team. Today the games are, in my opinion, kind of sissified. You cannot touch the player with the ball, they miss 5 games over a hangnail, or miss a full season because of a small injury. The players of old if in their prime would transfer easily into the new way the game is played while many players in their prime now would not last more than 2 seasons in the 70's through 90's.
You need to watch a lot more Bird, you will continue to be more and more surprised - hes been called the best all around player in NBA history - he made whatever play it took to get the bucket and win the game - he was an amazing passer, astounding shooter from anywhere on the court, he called his shots and backed it up every time and was a master of trash talk for just a few - keep going on the bird videos, this rabbit hole is DEEEEEP.

I CAME UP WITH BIRD. HES THE REASON I WORE #33 IN HS. I could pass great like him but had nothing close to his shooting ability. Plus he was about 8 or 9 inches taller than me. I wished I could throw set shots like that. Much easier than jumpers. No one can argue hes a GOAT. Call him the white GOAT, BUT AS ISAIAH said put him, Jordan, and myself in a room. He'll be the one that walks out.....being double teamed cuz of ur shooting ability automatically ups ur pass & assist game. That's what made him so good. He didn't care if he had 5 or 60 points a night. VERY UNSELFISH. Just as long as Boston came away with the W at the end of the night he was more than happy. And IDC what anyone says, the league was much harder in the 80s and 90s. No "superstars" flopping like Leflop James. Unheard-of today.
Bird is a one of one type player. At the end of the day once Luka retires it will be clear he was a shorter, more mobile playmaker than Bird who could shoot well, a lot better than Lebron could at that age, but is still not near Bird. Luka has to do all these stepbacks and shit to get an open look, Bird just pulls the shit. Rebounds better than Bron, playmakes on the same level as Magic, scores with the best of em but was never considered a black hole when u pass it to him like MJ was. He isnt 1 for me solely because he wasnt the greatest 1 on 1 player both sides, but imo he is the greatest 5 on 5 player of all time. He is 2 for me I put him over Mike who had all the help he could ever need for his 6 chips and had bad comp for most of em. I only put Wilt above Bird.

Bird was absolutely ahead of his time. Maravich was even further ahead of his own time. I will say, though, that these '80s Celtics were far and away the best overall passing team that I've ever witnessed
It was all possible because he could trust his team. He could make blind passes so perfectly because he knew they were going to be there- they practiced situations like that. He knew that if he got the ball to McHale or Parish, it was guaranteed points. The whole team played that way- did you see the times when the ball got high speed passed until it hit the open man? Bird is incredibly underrated currently, mostly due to playing the same position as Lebron. Sports news outlets always want to hype up the current stars as the best ever. Pretty much everybody knew Bird was the best player of the 80s, or at minimum on par with other great players and MVP candidates like Magic and Kareem. Bird won 3 MVPs consecutively and when he wasn't first he was typically the runner-up. The curious thing is Magic and Kareem are still viewed as top 5 players now but Bird has mysteriously been dropped down to the bottom of the top 10 by most of the sports media talking heads. To me, a top 5 list without Bird makes very little sense. I grew up watching pro basketball in the 80s, and Jordan is the only guy I'd say I can confidently rate above him, although he was not as well-rounded but was far more blessed physically and didn't have the severe injury problems. Jordan, Bird, and Magic are my personal top 3. Then maybe Olajuwon and Abdul-Jabbar. Then there are a bunch of legendary bigmen like Chamberlain, Duncan, ect. Bird=top 2 passer, top midrange shooter, top 3 3 point shooter, top 5 inside shooter, top 10 rebounder, top 100 defender. In his first 9 season he never finished MVP race lower than the 4th place he was as a rookie. Over that stretch he received 66.97 % of all possible MVP votes. 3 consecutive MVP's, and 4 seconds. Even after "career ending" foot and back surgeries he finished in the top 15 MVP votes for 3 seasons.
I'm so glad you young kids get to watch all this tape on Bird and Magic. As you can see, they made basketball exciting to watch. The NBA was going bankrupt when they arrived. The two of them saved the league. The real shame is there is so little tape on Bob Cousey. Bob is the originator, the creator. He was the first to do this stuff Bird and Magic brought back to the NBA. He played just like Bird and Magic, but he was the first to do this stuff. He was called "Mr. Basketball, the Houdini of the Hardwood". You knew they were going to take it to the basket, but you never knew how they were going to do it. It was magical. Without Bob, there might not have been an NBA for Bird and Magic to save. Bob created the NBA, and Bird and Magic saved it. Do a web search and watch Bob play.
Kool. Have you ever watched a full game or just highlights ? I'm a true Bird fan but there's nothing like watching a full game. You get the "Good" & the "Bad" times. Helps to keep one grounded.
Who else was a legit 6'10", has a case as the greatest shooter of all time, greatest passer of all time, leader of all time, clutchest shooter of all time, 3 straight MVPs, 3 Titles, Rookie of the year, 10 boards a game and 7 assists all damn career. Could post anyone up, shoot from ANYWHERE and under immense pressure in double teams. It took MJ seven years to win a title with Bird in the league and all of that in 13 years, 12 actually because he only played in 6 games in one of those because of double achielles surgery. Pretty much destroyed the integrety of his spine in the summer of 85 too and was really never the same. Oh, and the summer before entering the NBA, he crushed the index finger on his shooting hand. Disfigured it. He said he was a much better shooter before that injury lmao.
Larry could shoot plus 3's, handle, rebound, assist, steal, shoot free throws, talk trash and backed it up and was clutch against NBA hall of famers. Who else do that??? Please name them cause I can't do.
2:17 I honestly don’t know how Chris Ford was ever in the NBA even in the weakest era (Post Wilt & Bill, Pre Magic & Bird) because I have never seen him make a shot and I’ve seen him ruin multiple Bird and Pistol Pete HL passes. I’m talking wide open lay ups, you name it.
4:47 he knows all the opposition is under the basket. He also knows how many Celtics are under the basket. He threw it to where someone SHOULD have been and fortunately they were. In soccer we called it making a square.
If Bird was a rookie today, he would STILL be far ahead of his time. As would Magic. The two greatest passers of all time. Which was better? Flip a coin...
For those that think Larry Bird was not as good as he really was. This comment is for those whom never had the chance to see him play. At that time it was not about the individuals stats it was about the win. But if you need some stats here you go: Here are some of Larry Bird's notable career achievements and statistics: Three-time NBA champion (1981, 1984, 1986); Two-time NBA Finals MVP (1984, 1986); Three-time NBA MVP (1984-86); 12-time NBA All-Star (1980-88, 1990-92); Nine-time All-NBA First Team (1980-88); All-NBA Second Team (1990); Three-time All-NBA Defensive Second Team (1982-84); NBA Rookie of the Year (1980); NBA All-Rookie Team (1980); Three-time NBA Three-Point Contest champion (1986-88); Career-high in points: 60 (March 12, 1985) -- tied for franchise record with Jayson Tatum; Named NBA Coach of the Year (1998); and Named NBA Executive of the Year (2012). Larry Bird, was the first player to accomplish the 50-40-90 achievement, and one of two players to achieve the feat in multiple seasons. Career averages: 24.3 points per game 10.0 rebounds per game 6.3 assists per game 88.6% free throw percentage 49.6% field goal percentage 37.6% 3-point percentage Now we can't forget that Bird famously played with two injured ankles and a notoriously cranky back that forced him to lay down on the floor during practice breaks. He likely used these crutches after season-ending foot surgery just six games into the 1988-89 season
When it mattered most...Most game-winners in the last minute of the game of All-Time: #1) Kobe = 26 #2) Jordan = 25 #3) LeBron = 20 #3) Bird = 19 #5) Dirk = 18
when people talk about the best ever, if its 1 v 1 its Michael Jordan, most skilled team 80s La Lakers, best team through teamwork and unselfish play Bird, parish, McHale Celtics
Bird was about winning...not always his own stats. If he didn't have a shot, but saw a teammate who did he'd pass it. Parrish said a large chink of his points came off passes from Bird. When you played with Bird, you HAD to be aware of him, because he was aware of you and a pass might come from anywhere at any time.
Respectfully react to “ How good was Larry Birds Prime time”. And “5 time Larry Bird was injured but refused to quit”. I get the every Era has there favorite of who they grow up with and like. That’s cool all I ask is to respect the players who came before todays players. I’m not saying Birds the GOAT or anything just that I want people respect and appreciate what he did saving basketball so the players today have a change to play and to understand how good Bird actually was. I like your videos and that your open minded.
Larry was great. But no one is as good as wilt Chamberlin 61 -62 season check it out. Goal tending was added to basket ball because of wilts shot blocking. The only reason wilt is not talked of more many of his games were not televised. NBA was not prime time until bird, Magic. Wilt still holds I believe it is 90 NBA records. You need to look at wilt
….. you eating paint chips ? Bird was the greatest shooter of all time ! Neither of these players are known for their outside game and aren’t even top ten ! And , Larry is easily in the GOAT conversation …… # 12 DUNCAN # 25 ? ROBINSON
@3:46 everyone that every watched Bird play was guaranteed to make that face on multiple occasions per game. Dude owned the 80's. OWNED. Jordan was a rookie in 1984 and didnt win a title until 1991, Bird's last year and never won a single playoff game against Bird, even with Pippen. Swept, twice. In the mean time in the 80's, Bird won 3 straight MVPs, finished 1st or 2nd in MVP voting for like 7 or 8 years, won 3 titles, all-star and 1st team all nba all but the season he missed every game but 6. Best passing and shooting SF ever with the claim to best ever in both, 50/40/90 founder, and averaged 10 boards a game. He was a legit 6'10" too, with nasty nasty handles. Was a threat as soon as he crossed half court.

Gotta watch the re-edit from Merkin Muffly, th-cam.com/video/wwo4vtaZmsY/w-d-xo.html. A little longer but jaw-dropping passes.
The GOAT
Kool.
Have you ever watched a full game or just highlights ?
I'm a true Bird fan but there's nothing like watching a full game. You get the "Good" & the "Bad" times. Helps to keep one grounded.
imagine if Maravich was healthy when he joined Larry in Boston, Pete was one of the greatest players in the NBA before injuries took over.
As fans these were regular season games, nightly competition regardless of the playoffs
I died the 2nd sold clip 😂😂😂
Larry could shoot plus 3's, handle, rebound, assist, steal, shoot free throws, talk trash and backed it up and was clutch against NBA hall of famers. Who else do that??? Please name them cause I can't do.
Bird no. 3? Are you out of your mind? Who did more than Larry? Shooting, passing, rebounding, team leadership, hustling, clutch playing... NO ONE.
True GOAT
He wasn't ahead of his time, he was all time! No holes in his game. None!
thank you
The Worm/Dennis Rodman
never enough Marachich
Wilt the Stilt.
Bill Russell
2:17
I honestly don’t know how Chris Ford was ever in the NBA even in the weakest era (Post Wilt & Bill, Pre Magic & Bird) because I have never seen him make a shot and I’ve seen him ruin multiple Bird and Pistol Pete HL passes. I’m talking wide open lay ups, you name it.
And a lot of that crazy stuff he did with a badly mangled back
4:47 he knows all the opposition is under the basket. He also knows how many Celtics are under the basket. He threw it to where someone SHOULD have been and fortunately they were. In soccer we called it making a square.
fundamental yet swaggy
Magic, Bird, Action Jackson, Kidd, White Chocolate, Joker, Penny...sauce Goats
I need to see the re-edit
Look at Pete Maravich the college Goat. 44.2 ppg no 3 point line and only played 3 years!!!
makes you wonder how many of his teammates would be in the Hall of Fame without Bird.
If Bird was a rookie today, he would STILL be far ahead of his time.
As would Magic.
The two greatest passers of all time. Which was better? Flip a coin...
RIP DJ
For those that think Larry Bird was not as good as he really was. This comment is for those whom never had the chance to see him play.
At that time it was not about the individuals stats it was about the win. But if you need some stats here you go:
Here are some of Larry Bird's notable career achievements and statistics:
Three-time NBA champion (1981, 1984, 1986); Two-time NBA Finals MVP (1984, 1986); Three-time NBA MVP (1984-86); 12-time NBA All-Star (1980-88, 1990-92); Nine-time All-NBA First Team (1980-88);
All-NBA Second Team (1990); Three-time All-NBA Defensive Second Team (1982-84); NBA Rookie of the Year (1980); NBA All-Rookie Team (1980); Three-time NBA Three-Point Contest champion (1986-88);
Career-high in points: 60 (March 12, 1985) -- tied for franchise record with Jayson Tatum; Named NBA Coach of the Year (1998); and Named NBA Executive of the Year (2012).
Larry Bird, was the first player to accomplish the 50-40-90 achievement, and one of two players to achieve the feat in multiple seasons.
Career averages:
24.3 points per game
10.0 rebounds per game
6.3 assists per game
88.6% free throw percentage
49.6% field goal percentage
37.6% 3-point percentage
Now we can't forget that Bird famously played with two injured ankles and a notoriously cranky back that forced him to lay down on the floor during practice breaks. He likely used these crutches after season-ending foot surgery just six games into the 1988-89 season
It is wrong to mention those names in the same sentence with Bird.
Bird was not SELFISH. dudes need to see this sh1t
MJ just makes you look slow....Bird makes you look stupid! Lol. I love that quote! LOL. I don't remember who said it but I still love it.. Lol.
When it mattered most...Most game-winners in the last minute of the game of All-Time:
#1) Kobe = 26
#2) Jordan = 25
#3) LeBron = 20
#3) Bird = 19
#5) Dirk = 18
Length of career (years):
Kobe = 20
Jordan = 15
LeBron = 20
Bird = 13 (missed 37 games in '91-'92)
Dirk = 21
At first glance, I misread the name of your channel as Luice Jew 🤣
when people talk about the best ever, if its 1 v 1 its Michael Jordan, most skilled team 80s La Lakers, best team through teamwork and unselfish play Bird, parish, McHale Celtics
its shown when Magic and Bird are number 1 and 2 of the most wins per games played
Larry was doing these shoots first. Not players of today.
The re-edit is better
Ahead of his time ? Check out Pete Maravich for that.
Larry was great. But no one is as good as wilt Chamberlin 61 -62 season check it out. Goal tending was added to basket ball because of wilts shot blocking. The only reason wilt is not talked of more many of his games were not televised. NBA was not prime time until bird,
Magic. Wilt still holds I believe it is 90 NBA records. You need to look at wilt
Ngl Duncan Robinson is a better shooter than larrybird ever was
LOL
JUICE. WTF? WHO IN THE HELL IS DUNCAN ROBINSON?
….. you eating paint chips ?
Bird was the greatest shooter
of all time ! Neither of these
players are known for their
outside game and aren’t even
top ten ! And , Larry is easily
in the GOAT conversation ……
# 12 DUNCAN # 25 ? ROBINSON
You got to be kidding…😵💫
when you are wrong, then there is no argument
Was a threat as soon as he crossed half court.
he was theBesT OFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF ALL the REST...........................................
Please react to a highlight tape of Ramon "The Diamond" Dekkers. I'm not sure, but I would bet there is a chance that you've never heard of him, BUT, Please watch it you won't be sorry! He was a a Kickboxer from Holland, probably one of the toughest men to ever walk the face of the earth. He is an 8 time Muy Thai Kickboxing Champion. Muy Thai is a style of kickboxing from Thaiiland, they invented it and its like a religion almost over there. Dekkers went over there, first guy from the west, and proceeded to kick (and Punch)the living shit out of legends. Good videos, nice to see a reactor who doesn't pause the videos every fifteen seconds to make an unneeded comment.
Mmmm we may have to check that out 👀
