That behind the back pass was in a game right after Magic announced his retirement due to HIV. Bird threw that pass behind the back as a tribute to Magic.
I don’t know if anyone really confirmed that but I watched that game in live time and me along with most people sure thought that. Magic was absolutely spot on when he said Larry was one of a kind
Magic and Larry became very close friends. It started when they were shooting a shoe commercial in Larrys hometown. Magic thought it was crazy to go to Indiana to shoot the commercial when he lived in LA where they do that stuff hourly. But he went. He was going to eat lunch in his trailer when Larry told him to join him in the house for lunch. Larrys mom made lunch for them, and kept asking Larry if he’d told Magic yet. Larry said no and told her, why don’t you tell him? She proceeded to tell Magic that he was her favorite player! I thought it was adorable. Anyway, the commercial shout started a really great friendship. They’re close even today, from what I hear. Dude note, at Larrys retirement ceremony, Magic had a Celtics T-shirt on under his Lakers gear because he forgot to bring a T-shirt.
At the age of 30, Larry averaged more Points, rebounds, assists, steals and blocks than LeBron. As far as his defense, he was great at closing off passing lanes. He also made 3 all defensive teams.
Did you just say defenders back then must have been weak?! You can pick any player you want out of today's NBA and put him back during that time period.. to Play basketball...and I guarantee you before the 1st 5 minutes in the 1st quarter over ....there gonna be crying for their mama!
I read that Bird had Bron's passing, KD's midrange shooting touch, Curry's long range and free throw accuracy, Jokers rebounding skills, Kobe and MJ's killer will, and more clutch than any player in history! It should have said that they have Birds.
Go down the Bird rabbit hole. He wasn’t lucky and the line-up of players he played against were the toughest. He worked hard and was the best. He didn’t care about stats he only wanted the team to succeed.

The best way to understand larry is to think of it in video game terms. Everyone has stat points in a couple specific places but occasionally you encounter someone with extra stats higher than normal like MJ has dunking and offense on an amazingly high level. What makes Bird special is the fact that he has an all around stat advantage that puts him great in almost every field. He may not be a big dunker like MJ but his 3 pointer shots were so deadly that just when you thought you had a chance he would change that in minutes. That last minute win by the celtics over the pistons in the video is not a one and only time. Larry was a consistent 3 point last second threat. If he got the ball at that moment you had better hope he fails otherwise its a win for boston. That is why the 3 point competition was won by him 3 years in a row. Typically many of the top guys never had a chance at winning that competition if he was in it. He would even try to miss intentionally just to make it more challenging. Besides the 3 pointers, the quick passing, and the fake outs, larry bird used some of the most effective psychological warfare of all time. No one was immune to it. Players, coaches, reporters, and even the refs. Larry showed he could play at a level so high that it would make even MJ balk in surprise. That is what MJ admits he learned from Larry. He learned how to raise his prestige to a level so high that everyone sees you as the boss. To make things even scarier, even after he left as a player he went on to coaching and executive with the same boss level. As a coach and exec, he would challenge players to compete against him just to prove they had much to learn. That is why players from the early days to modern times revere Bird with a special respect as he is one of the few people that set a gold standard of how to be a perfect player. Its too bad the games do not reflect that as he would probably be considered a cheat character if they put him in game as he was in life.

Bird had it all from day 1 in the NBA. The others gained some of these things after several years. Bird was the Batman of the NBA. I'm a 76ers fan and got to see Larry Bird et al. in their prime at the Philadelphia Spectrum (RIP). I hated that man and his team. But I knew the man could play. Put it this way: two teams, my 83 Sixers and 89 Pistons, were the only teams in the 80s not named the Celtics or Lakers to win the NBA Championship. That's how dominant Bird & Magic were in the NBA.
Trust, the more you look into and find out about Larry, the more you'll truly understand why us old heads understand. There's a vid video called how good was he really, and they talk to alot of his peers. Also check out Making the Case Larry Bird. He played with a literal broken back for like 7 years. He was the toughest most feared player ever. Jordan said he learned mind games from Bird.
Ya know, I don’t come running to Stephen A. Smith’s defense very often, if ever but he’s always shown mad love and respect for Bird and seems to have him right up there in the whole, “who’s the GOAT?” conversation. Shocking, I know.
Combine the skills needed to be a complete basketball player, put them into a machine, Larry pops out the other end. Greatest passer, greatest shooter, greatest clutch player ever. Also had a 6-0 playoff record v MJ. If you're talking about GOAT Bird needs to be in the conversation.
Re: the "Passing behind his back just cause he could". He did that the night he heard Magic had contracted the HIV virus. That was his tribute to his friend & rival!
No holes in Bird's game. Even made all defensive teams, and during his entire career he averaged double digit rebounds. Also one of the greatest passers of all time. Perhaps you can react to Larry Bird Greatest Passer w/new footage re-edit video. Subbed!
You need to research Bird. Bird led the league in defensive win shares 4 times and was 7 times in the top 5 in DWS. Bird in 1983 finished tied for 3rd place for the DPOY award. Bird was on 3 all defense teams = 2nd team. Bird as a rookie went to a 29 win team and with 1 player change to the roster in ML Carr and a new coach was the main reason Boston won 61 games = a 32 game turnaround = the biggest turnaround in NBA history. Bird won ROY by a big margin over Magic and was 4th in the MVP. Then in the next 8 seasons in the MVP Bird was 2,2,2,1,1,1,3 and 2nd again. Bird created the 50-40-90 shooting club - did it 2 years in a row = 87 and 88 and was so close in 85 and 86 that if you total Bird's stats = Bird averaged 50-40-90 over 4 consecutive years = no other "goat " can say that. Bird was a phenomenal passer - as good as Magic but played Forward and Bird vs Magic= Bird was a better shooter, scorer, rebounder and defender. Keep digging into Bird and you will be amazed!
Everyone that watches him says he is like this guy or that but he did it before them. They are like him but in no way are they as good. He is the GOAT in my eyes. Carry on my young friend you will see that he does it all. Thanks for the reaction was very genuine.
"He just gets lucky". The Hawks bench was reacting because he was calling every shot he hit. Luka is no where near the same universe as Larry Joe Bird. He's better than both Jokic and Luka by light years.
After the Indiana game one of the Indiana players congratulated Bird and told him he had never seen anything like that and he was going to tell his kids about it when they got old enough. Bird played the 4th quarter with a bad back, a concussion and a fractured cheek bone. Larry will always be a legend!!!!!!!
lots of players making "GOAT" claims but only one player ALL the goats call Legend, Larry Legend!! the celtics / lakers highlights was of the '84 championship series. celtics won 4 games to 3. game 7 was a beast bird / magic is the greatest rivalry in nba history by far, maybe even all of sports. those 2 are why the nba exists today. I would recommend A Courtship of Rivals for your next bird video.
There’s a good reason they bring him up. He taught a lot of them how to be better players. Watch more Larry, you’ll just be more impressed, and more on the greats side. Lol! He was so fun to watch! He would make the most amazing plays! He didn’t care about stats, but he knew which of his teammates hadn’t had any shots, and made an effort to assist those players, when he got locked down.
People were falling cos they weren't used to the stepback, AT ALL, because as far as I can tell Larry INVENTED it! I could be wrong, someone confirm or correct thx. In any case, it was new and ahead of it's time.
I think that credit goes to the man Bird stole the ball from near the beginning of the video, Kiki VanDeWeghe, who averaged almost 30 ppg in his best season.
@ToddandRaquiForrest ACTUALLY, tho it's often credited to Kiki, Bird "stole" / adapted it from a player he crossed paths with when he was a rookie or sophomore on the Celtics (1980 or 81 season, Ithink). Bird thought that sort of move would be good in his arsenal. I don't remember the player's name; it's not someone well-known.
"If I had to choose a player to take a shot to save a game I'd choose Michael Jordan; If I had to choose a player to take a shot to save my life...I'd take Larry Bird." - Pat Riley
Watch -> Larry Bird Greatest Passer of All Time (Re-edit w/ New Footage) Bird has more full court dimes than most people have regular assists...Your jaw will be on the ground and youll see why he's Larry Legend...passed like Magic, jumper like MJ, 3ptr like Curry, rebound like Ewing (avg 10rpg career)...
From 1980- 1989, Bird received 67% of MVP votes. Bird legitimately should have won 5 MVPs in a row. Bird is the clutchest shooter and most complete player ever.
While you were verbally wondering why the Hawks bench was reacting like they did you missed the announcer saying that Bird had 60 points. He was making such ridiculous shots that even the competition was going crazy. Sometimes you miss an important comment with too much chatter.
Son , there is no “ LUCK “ involved when it comes to Larry Joe Bird ! And , those that actually saw Larry Bird play , know he is the Greatest all around player in NBA history and have always knew he was in the GOAT conversation ! Both JORDAN and JAMES have LARRY BIRD top five , though I believe larry Bird is actually the real GOAT and someone who doesn’t even think LEBRON JAMES is a top 10 player !
Bird is the GOAT for the following reasons ROY,3x MVP( consecutive), 12x All Star. He has beaten every HOF player he ever faced. Bird swept MJ twice in the playoffs. He also won a coach of the year. He was the founder of the 50/40/90 club.
If you think Larry Bird "just gets lucky", you have zero understanding of him. None at all. He had one of, if not THE, highest court awareness of any player. "Just gets lucky" is possibly the most ignorant comment I have heard one of these "reaction video" hosts ever say about Larry Bird. AND.... if you think the defense in the 80s was soft, you obviously have never watched many videos from that era. Just stop.
Top NBA career combined stats per game (pts, reb, ast, stl, blk) career fg%,tp%,ft% 1. Jordan 44.7 -50-33-84 2. Lebron 44.4 -51-35-73 3. Bird 43.1 -50-38-89 4. Kareem 42.9 -56-06-72 5. Durant 40.8 -50-38-88 Bird has the second highest game winning percentage right behind Magic (10 games off).
LeBron has Larry in his top three... Magic, Kareem, Dominique also rank him top5, possibly THE best they ever played against. Gary Peyton said he was THE coldest dude he ever saw. Isiah said if you pitten Jordan, Magic, Nird and himself in a battle royal, Bird would proabbly be the winner. James Worthy said hed rather guard Jordan than Bird. Basically EVERY legend of the sport consider Bird to be one of THE best players ever. Not everyone has him top5 but I dont think Ive seen a single player from the 80s or 90s rank Larry outside the top10
I have watched a bunch of people react to this video. I am surprised that no one ever picks up that the pass he fired across the court at 8:52 was LEFT handed.
Larry was a crazy defender and as far as Jordan he met him twice in the playoffs and Larry swept him both times at one point Jordan and Pippin double teamed him and he shot it in their faces.
Great job Omar. OK 1. Luka is NOT in Birds' stratosphere. 2. D was great back then. 3. They showed Rambis getting decked because that was the turning point to Boston winning the Championship. Larry shot like Curry, passed like Magic, rebounded like Kareem and stole like Stockton. He was the most Clutch player ever, 3 consecutive MVPs and King of the 40/50/90 club. GOAT? LEGEND!!!!🏀
He had a defensive bag, for sure. He had an impressive number of steals and assists..double digit rebounds etc. He just was the best all around talent at the time, he could do all of it well, except leave the ground lol, but did score from almost anywhere on the court consisently, especially in clutch. His court awareness, unmatched BBall IQ and absolute fearlessness made him one of the G.O.A.Ts. He did play against Jordan Bulls in the 80s, swept them 2 times in playoffs and even double teamed by Jordan AND Pippen, they could not stop him, neither could Rodman. He seriously was quite something to watch, he had that unhinged type of killer instinct on the court, supreme confidence in his game and guts for battle. Those sorts are the the actual G.O.A.T.s...and only small percentage of players then (and now) have those alpha type 'alter egos' in competition...he said in an interview that when he steps on to the court, he expects to win.
Thank you for Actually Paying attention to the commentators. Most dont and they miss the majority of whats important in the video. Great reaction to The Legend 🎉🎉 ( except for the Larry the Lobster part, let's not do that 😂 )
Dude, please understand that speed, and quickness are not the only 2 factors that make a great ball player. Larry's IQ is unmatched, the dude just understood how to play the game period. I would say if you asked a lot of hall of famers who their favorite player was, they would answer Bird. There's a reason why MJ, Worthy, Magic, Kareem, Dr J, Isaiah Thomas all sing his praises. They sure as hell didn't play NBA 2k and thought he's slow, therefore he must be garbage, that's pretty simple minded, honestly.
Want to have some fun? Watch Larry Bird is the word, 15 minutes of Larry Legend. Watch the greatest game I ever played, I should have quit right there. There's only one Larry Legend.
Jordan made you look slow. Bird made you look stupid. - James Worthy It's insane that he's become underrated and people dismiss his greatness. His first 9 seasons before he hurt his back he had better numbers than LeBron.
It’s not luck when you say what you’re gonna do then do it. He was always two steps ahead of everyone on the court. And his situational awareness was crazy. That’s why he could do all those blind passes. And when the other team was celebrating him, it wasn’t just that shot. It was that he had been doing that the whole game. Larry played back in the day before all the players turned into pu$$ie$. 🤷♂️🤦♂️😆
You have to watch more videos on Larry your respect will grow. He made his team better. He was a team player he got every one involved. You have just seen just a little bit of him.Bird was a got all around player and was in it for the win. Watch his larry bird greatest passer re edit video. Larry and magic rivalries were so awesome to watch because they both were team players but great in their own individual way as team leaders. Courtship of rivals is a long video but is about Larry and magic. I still watch basketball and enjoy the talent I see in joker Luka KD lebron wembyDirk the Celtics of today and many more but bird will always be my favorite my top 6 Mj lebron Bird magic Kareem Kobe so many other players I loved watching Shaq Dominique Clyde drexler oh so many great players over the years this old head watching the new boys coming up boozer twins Albanza and cooper Flagg all great high schoolers coming up fast. Albanza and Cooper Flag being my two favorites . Great reaction.
Luck? The Legend could only do that because of luck? You don't know much about Larry Legend. It wasn't luck. Defense was REAL back then. It was NOT like today's game. It was way better. It was harder to play then. Floppers would have been laughed out of the league.
STOP even saying Luka is nothing compared to Larry Bird. Larry Bird was telling the opponent what he was going to do with the ball 🏀 before he does it on them. And please stop calling Larry Bird Larry the Lobster. He's got 1 name Larry Bird or Larry LEGEND!!! He was even telling Scotty Pippen and Michael Jordan what he was going to do with the ball 🏀 and they couldn't stop Larry Bird the Legend from scoring!!!
When goat talk comes up.. the players have more reliability than we do. MJ - look at it like this.. in 2 head-to-head playoff series MJ is 0 - 2 against Bird. Better still both those series WERE SWEPT by Bird and the Celtics! So who do you think MJ feared? Also, that retirement party was a stand alone event.. those people weren't there because there was a game afterwards. They ALL came to say goodbye to Bird
I love when Larry just gets fancy with it because he just wants to. He’s playing with his food!!😂

league . Magic Johnson
and Doctor J were Birds
biggest competition .
Bird >jordan?
23-11, 17-11 regulars, 6-0 playoffs, in Birds favour.
Thank you! I was gonna say the same thing!
He led the league in defensive win shares multiple times... always in the right place
Crazy stat👀
You had to respect Bird skills so much that he dropped people when they over committed
Also, the three point line was created his rookie season.
"He just gets lucky" being league MVP 3 years in a row? Bro.
When he said that ....I wanted to reach through the screen and slap him upside his head!
Larry was in the 60-40-90 club 4YEARS IN A ROW. He missed a quadruple double by 1 point in 3 quarters.
By one steal. 👍🏼
@@lynnhoffmann247 yup
Trust, the more you look into and find out about Larry, the more you'll truly understand why us old heads understand. There's a vid video called how good was he really, and they talk to alot of his peers. Also check out Making the Case Larry Bird. He played with a literal broken back for like 7 years. He was the toughest most feared player ever. Jordan said he learned mind games from Bird.
Defense was much better back then bro. He froze people.
Larry Bird - Greatest Passer Of All Time (Re-edit with new footage), 15 minutes of passing genius.
Ya know, I don’t come running to Stephen A. Smith’s defense very often, if ever but he’s always shown mad love and respect for Bird and seems to have him right up there in the whole, “who’s the GOAT?” conversation. Shocking, I know.
He says "Fk'n rookie" while he's looking at them on the floor. 😂
I wish they micd him up 😂
Combine the skills needed to be a complete basketball player, put them into a machine, Larry pops out the other end.
Greatest passer, greatest shooter, greatest clutch player ever.
Also had a 6-0 playoff record v MJ. If you're talking about GOAT Bird needs to be in the conversation.
He for sure does
Re: the "Passing behind his back just cause he could". He did that the night he heard Magic had contracted the HIV virus. That was his tribute to his friend & rival!
You asked why they showed Rambis being taken down without Bird or Magic in the picture, I believe it was to highlight the Celtic-Laker rivalry.
No holes in Bird's game. Even made all defensive teams, and during his entire career he averaged double digit rebounds. Also one of the greatest passers of all time. Perhaps you can react to Larry Bird Greatest Passer w/new footage re-edit video. Subbed!
Thanks for the info
Really need to watch Magic and Bird a Courtship of Rivals, Case for the GOAT Larry Bird, and Bird vs Jordan
Larry always had the opposing team best defensive player on him
"He just gets lucky". The Hawks bench was reacting because he was calling every shot he hit. Luka is no where near the same universe as Larry Joe Bird. He's better than both Jokic and Luka by light years.
Larry is the one true goat!
After the Indiana game one of the Indiana players congratulated Bird and told him he had never seen anything like that and he was going to tell his kids about it when they got old enough. Bird played the 4th quarter with a bad back, a concussion and a fractured cheek bone. Larry will always be a legend!!!!!!!
lots of players making "GOAT" claims but only one player ALL the goats call Legend, Larry Legend!!
the celtics / lakers highlights was of the '84 championship series. celtics won 4 games to 3. game 7 was a beast
bird / magic is the greatest rivalry in nba history by far, maybe even all of sports. those 2 are why the nba exists today. I would recommend A Courtship of Rivals for your next bird video.
Bird made three all defense awards
Lol ironically, Larry Bird is Steven A’s favorite player
Son , there is no “ LUCK “
involved when it comes
to Larry Joe Bird ! And ,
those that actually saw
Larry Bird play , know he
is the Greatest all around
player in NBA history and
have always knew he was
in the GOAT conversation !
Both JORDAN and JAMES
have LARRY BIRD top five ,
though I believe larry Bird
is actually the real GOAT
and someone who doesn’t
even think LEBRON JAMES
is a top 10 player !
GOAT
People who don’t bring up Larry in the GOAT conversation, doesn’t know shit about basketball.
3:10. That was Dominique Wilkins who went down.
Yo..hope you read this... LARRY WAS CALLING HIS SHOTS OUTLOUD!!!!
thats why Hawks were going crazy...lol
I read it 😂
Bird is the GOAT for the following reasons
ROY,3x MVP( consecutive), 12x All Star.
Just stop.
Larry would shoot for hours at Indiana State where he would go to where the rebound would be if he missed
Top NBA career combined stats per game (pts, reb, ast, stl, blk) career fg%,tp%,ft%
1. Jordan 44.7 -50-33-84
2. Lebron 44.4 -51-35-73
3. Bird 43.1 -50-38-89
4. Kareem 42.9 -56-06-72
5. Durant 40.8 -50-38-88
Bird has the second highest game winning percentage right behind Magic (10 games off).
Kobe had Larry legend in his top 3 ,Larry favorite player was Kobe
He's my GOAT with Michael Jordan..
😂
@@omarkrazi Ive already proven my point with stats and facts tho.. MOST all around player EVER..
a POINT POWER STRETCH FORWARD..
Lucky?you really make me laugh on that one
Shaq kept saying that it was luck too.
MJ....0 for 6 against Larry Legend in the playoffs 🏀🐐
You need to watch making the case Larry Bird, Bird is the GOAT
Larry beat Jordan!! His rival was Magic!!
Wow you do that to people all time, where do you play kid?you must be awesome,I'd take Larry the legend Bird over any player
Top 3, and I hated him back in the '80s. He was that good, that clutch, that legendary.
Thank you for Actually Paying attention to the commentators. Most dont and they miss the majority of whats important in the video.
Great reaction to The Legend 🎉🎉
( except for the Larry the Lobster part, let's not do that 😂 )
Funniest comment was defenders were weak back then
Funniest thing I’ve heard in a while
…. kid needs more
research for sure !
I was joking 😅
Bird/Jordan 1a/1b all time.
- James Worthy
It's insane that he's become underrated and people dismiss his greatness. His first 9 seasons before he hurt his back he had better numbers than LeBron.
Larry Legend
Listen dude Larry legend was the Goat don't disrespect Larry Legend fr
Did you really say larry was "lucky?' Oh boy! I watched him play just about every gane back then.. there was no luck involved.
Question for you. If everything is so easy how come your not in the NBA
You should check out Larry Bird greatest passer of all time video re-edit. AMAZING
You have no idea how great bird was
No. Luka is doin Bird...
That long behind the back pass was for Magic that was the day he found out he had HIV
His stats hold up to anybody
Larry Bird #1.
He's a GOAT of Lebron's
Defenders back then weak?you got a lot to learn kid,you might be a lebum fanboy😂😂😂
Nah d wades my favorite of all time
