Who takes KD before Larry is because still know very little about Larry. Personally to start a franchise I take Bird over anyone else and if you keep watching his videos you'll know why, his personality, his leadership, his unselfishness, playing through career-ending injuries, etc. Since you're probably Lebron fans, keep in mind that Lebron once in an interview put Larry in his top3 all time. Cheers from Venice Italy

Larry was a better shooter, rebounder, and had more assists than Jordan. As you read these career stats, just keep in mind, that Jordan played 2 more seasons than Bird did (175 games), and also played in what was considered a weaker conference. Not only that, Bird played his last 4 years with debilitating injuries, and missed all but 6 games of the 88-89 season.
    Field goal percentage:
    Jordan: 49.7
    Bird: 49.6

    Bird: 21,791
Again....Jordan played 15 basically healthy seasons, compared to 13 seasons for Bird, with 4 of those seasons played with a seriously bad back, leaving 9 truly healthy seasons. And those 4 injury riddled seasons, included the 88-89 season, in which he only played 6 games. He had back surgery, plus surgery on both Achilles tendons.
Between 1981-1988, Larry won the League MVP 3 times in a row, and never finished below 3rd in the voting....2,2,1,1,1,3,2. In that same time period, Larry received 67% of all MVP votes cast. And again, he was in the stronger league, in the most talent rich era in NBA history. He is the only player beside Wilt and Bill Russell, to win 3 in a row....and the only player in history, to win a championship, MVP, coach of the year, and executive of the year. Bird was never the center of any drama or pettiness, and played his entire career with the Celtics, winning championships with whoever the management brought on.
All things equal, and if Bird would have been healthy those other 4 years, he would have a legitimate claim as the best player ever. If I was building a team and had to pick between either player in their prime, I would pick Bird.

Doesn't matter who's around them to start a team. Take Bird. The 1978 celtics won 29 games. In 1979, Bird's rookie season, they won 61 games. Bird was the only major change. Nearly unanimous rookie of the year, all star, and 1st team all-nba. From 1979 until now, Tim Duncan is the only other rookie with those honors. Then, Bird went 2, 2, 2, 1, 1, 1, 3, 2 for mvp in his 2nd-9th seasons with 67% of all mvp votes in those 8 seasons, the last 3 of which took place AFTER he suffered his major back injury that would have ended most players careers and caused him to need spinal alignments before every game for the rest of his career.
At 24/10/6 for his career, he's the only 20/10/5 player in league history. He's as clutch as any other player ever was, and you can't foul him at the end of the game, because he's 89% from the line.
And he won. A lot. Boston won over 60 games in 6 of his first 7 seasons, in a division where philly won 58+ in 5 of those 7 (52+ in all 7). The Celtics won 51+ in every season bird was on the court. The one season he missed (due to achilles surgery on both feet), they dropped from 57 wins in 1988 to 42 wins in 1989. He returned in 1990 and they won 52, 56, and 51 in his last 3 seasons. Only magic has a higher career winning pct (74.5% to Bird's 74.1%, i think) and Bird played in the more competitive conference

Kd can't be a part of a building process. He goes where the pieces already are in place or look like they will be according to him.

  • @marykuettner752

KD isn't a better ballhandler. There is no way I take anyone ahead of Bird.
Bird has very fast reflexes. Seriously I have seen everyone since the mid seventies. Bird's ability to find his teammates and pass is something KD can't touch. Bird's will to win is so far ahead of LeBron's they shouldn't be in the same sentence.
That clip of Bird and Person in 91? Bird's back was so bad he was spending the night before games in the hospital in traction.
Bird would have retired in 88 because his back was so bad but the Celtic's number one draft pick in 87 died of an overdose and Bird wouldn't let his teammates down.
He is Larry Legend for a reason. KD is a great player but he isn't a legend. A legend is larger than life, someone you can't believe if you didn't see it for yourself. LeBron can call himself King but his peers gave Larry his nickname.

Michael Jordan and Lebron have Larry in their top 5 with MJ stating that Larry is the best small forward to ever play the game. Larry is THE BEST all around player ever. 3 straight MVP's (only 2 other players have done that. College Player of the year, rookie of the year, Championship MVP twice, Coach of the year and Executive of the Year (only player who has done that) . He also brought a lot on non-statistical attributes to the game, his basket ball IQ, trash talking that he almost always could back up, and a mental toughness to play with a ridiculous amount of injuries that NO ONE in today's league would ever do. His impact on a team is immeasurable which is why I would build a team around Larry Legend over any other player.

Bird won 3 back to back to back MVP’s (only Bill Russell and Wilt Chamberlain can match that).
Bird won the first 3 Three point contests.
Bird was the greatest trash talker of all time (even Michael Jordan gives credit to Bird, from where he learned how to trash talk and get in opponents’ heads)
Bird was leader, he made ever player on his team a better player by expecting better from them and not tolerating anything less. He lead by example and always hustled.
As another poster already stated, Bird beat every great player in his time. Jordan was swept twice by Bird in the playoffs. Bird is the only player that Jordan never got his revenge on. That’s saying a to.

They actually called West Mr. Clutch, long before Larry came into the league. They should have saved the name for Larry Bird, perhaps...

Because Bird is the coldest, toughest, highest IQ, most confident, most skilled all around player on the court, who will tell everyone what he's about to do to them, then do it. After I have Bird then, I pick Magic for point guard, the second highest IQ on the court, and the guy that can play every position like a champ, including center. I’d take Larry Bird first in a draft over KD or James. Bird was the epitome of what Barkley likes to call a bus driver. He affected literally every aspect of the game when he was on the court. His pivot passing and unselfishness helped transform a journeyman center and a pine jockey forward into perennial All Stars and HoFers. Bird still owns the second highest winning percentage in NBA history, behind Magic who played with another GOAT and a team full of Hall of Famers, coached by a top three all time basketball genius. And he beat everybody who was anybody in his era. Jordan made people look slow; Larry made people look stupid.
KD is more like Mailman was, except operating mainly from outside instead of inside to baseline. KD is absolutely an all time great scorer, a reliable closer, but ultimately he’s along for the ride. Ray drove the bus in Seattle, Westbrook drove the bus in OKC, and Steph drove the bus for those Super Dub squads. KD had a chance to drive last year with Kyrie missing so much of the season, and got swept out of the first round. He’s not a better defender than Bird. He doesn’t have the same degree of game IQ or the same degree of killer instinct. That’s not intended as a slight- only Jordan, Russell, and Kobe were really in Bird’s league in both those intangibles. KD is a great asset, but Bird would be a better cornerstone.

Based on what I saw regarding skill, performance and will to win, there is no one better to start a franchise with.
His commitment to the game is exceptional.

BIRD was one of the best , but unfortunately he was around in a time when the players ran themselves into the ground , and never got to physically recover , if BIRD had had better medical care and also not been as stupid with some of the things he did he could have played another 3/4 years and also had better results for the last 2 years he played . BUT I WOULD TAKE HIM ANY DAY OF THE WEEK AND TWICE ON SUNDAY FOR MY TEAM .

I love when young people have opinions and they've never watched a single Celtics basketball game. Kevin Durant is nowhere near Larry Bird. Can Kevin Durant ball his ass off of course he can. I think he's one of the top 20 greatest basketball players ever but I think Larry Bird is a top five player. And I have watched both of their careers. You just have to ask yourself how can you judge something if you haven't even watched somebody play it doesn't even make sense.

According to Michael Jordan, Larry is "by far the best SF to ever play the game" and one of the top5 players of all time...
I think Ill trust his expertise.
I have a feeling he might know what hes talking about.

Kd could never carry a team he had to have superstars to help him win. Bird took a celtics team that was terrible to a championship in his second year. Bird made everyone better. Kd doesn't end of story. Kd is all iso and worried about his own shot. Also KDS height shouldn't be a factor since I'm pretty sure he didn't avg double digit rebounds for his career like Larry did. Kd scores Bird does everything, no contest. Bird all day every day.

Bird is the greatest small forward to ever play the game. He is better than KD. He is better than LeBron.

Cmon man... Larry is far more of a complete player than kd and leflop. Far better leader. Better at clutch. If larry averaged 24 for a career then it would be 34 for a career now especially with the emphasis on chucking up 3s all game.

That was a true statement that you didn't know what he would do but every night he would do something outrageous. He found all the ways to win games with clutch performances - all the ways that exist on a basketball court.

KD over Bird? Nice joke. Everyone back then thought Bird was slow too. He played against most of the NBA 50th and 75th anniversary teams plus Michael Cooper of the Lakers. No one could stop anything he did. Bird said Cooper is the best defender he ever faced. Better than Pippen, Jordan, and Rodman. Also, you’d take KD over the most clutch player in history? Your opinion is your own, I respectfully disagree.

Subbed for more Larry Bird! I recommend watching his game highlights against Michael Jordan where they both scored 71 points collectively. It’s one of the best games ever!

Bird won more MVPs, more Titles, selected to more 1st All-NBA Teams
KD has no leadership whatsoever...even he admitted that. Meanwhile, Bird is one of the greatest leaders of all-time
KD can't pass the ball to save his live. Meanwhile, Bird is one of the greatest of all-time
KD only averaged 7 Rebounds a game. Meanwhile, Bird averaged 10 Rebounds a game
KD was never selected to the All-Defense team. Meanwhile, Bird was selected 3 times

I would take a 13 year broken Larry Bird over KD in his prime, any day, any time. In my 40+ years of watching the NBA, I would only put Jordan and Chamberlain over Bird. This is coming from a Cleveland Cav fan and a Magic era Lakers fan who hated Bird during those days.

Larry Bird IS SEVERELY underrated......He may have talked trash on the court but who doesn'!?.......Just a humble gentleaman in all respects. Would give the shirt off his back... came up as a kid watching him....Leaned a lot. He's the reason I wore #33 in HS

"Who would you want if you were starting a franchise?" - We do not even need to compare skills to answer the question of who the better choice for long term success of a franchise because all you need to do is ask yourself the following:
Which of the two was not just the best player on the team but someone teammates looked to as a general on the battlefield and not fearing they might move on to another team at the end of every couple of seasons?
Which of the two would you hand the ball to when there is 10 seconds on the clock and you are down by 2 in a game 7 and need a miracle time and time again?
Which of the two was making fake accounts on twitter in order to get in arguments with 17 year olds?
Which of the two actually was a franchise player from day 1 to retirement?
Which of the 2 has the winner gene aka Jordan/Brady gene? The intangible factor that few posses that results in wins when they mean the most and time after time on a long term scale with supreme consistency?
Also it is insane to say that KD is a better ball handler than Larry. Every other factor can be argued but not that one.
Larry is top 6 easily and top 3 arguably.
