    Thing to note with Loot: He looks for card types among OTHER permanents - meaning he doesn't count himself. You still need another creature to get that draw.

  • @postalsteve
    @postalsteve 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +42

    I think Taii is a little undervalued here - while yes it can help draw cards, it also can turn any non-combat damage ability effectively into an x burn spell. For example you could trigger Impact Tremors with a creature, then use Taii to enhance the damage done to each each opponent making it a decent finisher on top of card advantage.

      Yeah he admittedly says at the end that he might be sleeping on Taii. I already have a build for her and she is super fun and modular. Having access to white in a burn deck is great. Being able to activate her at instant speed to make the damage exact is the kicker. It guarantees at least 1 card but more often it'll be 2 or more. Also with a few guttersnipe creatures in play the damage can get insane. Last but not least with either Urabrask or Birgi out with virtue of courage in play that's potentially game.

      Taii also doesn't say "opponent" anywhere, so there's room to build around your own creatures wanting to take damage. Say... Pyrohemia and Brash Taunter or Stuffy Doll.
      Each activation is drawing you a card for your own indestructible thing, _plus_ incidentals from your opponents. And each activation can be killing _someone_ faster than you.
      Can build this out with 1/1 tokens, ways to grant indestructible like Selfless Spirit, more ways to do 1 damage, etc.
      Maybe even go deep and run Solar Blaze, the first card I thought of with Taii before realizing it was a nonbo, at least for opp's creatures. But it kinda reads "sac your 1/1s, draw that many cards, maybe kill most of the board", so it's not too sad if you don't draw for theirs if your plan revolves around drawing for yours, and Taii lives through it.

    • @postalsteve
      @postalsteve 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@erfunk Spicy! I didn't even think about affecting your own creatures. That almost makes it feel like a boros aristocrat deck.

    I think the best “haste” spell for Geralf is an extra turn spell. Storm off, make a giant army, then end your storm turn with a time warp so you attack immediately on your extra turn.
    I guess then the question is if that’s better than just, like, putting an Aetherflux Reservoir in your deck.

    Breeches was underrated here as a tactical red style commander. Give him deathtouch/lifelink, or slap a curiosity on him and you're already cooking. If you build on losing the flip and fill your deck with bolts and the like, you're always shooting damage

  • @Buchaus

    1:21:35 being able to untap Stella with instants/sorceries that also do something else is exactly why she's absolutely cracked. With Cerulean Wisps, you can literally draw your entire deck by continuously untapping Stella with the copy and activating her again on Wisps before the original copy resolves. Works with a lot of other cards that untap her too. Traitorous Greed and Involuntary Employment give you infinite mana, several of the untap effects give a stat boost, and Twisted Fealty/Bond of Passion literally just win the game with the loop.

    1:10:20 Sands of Time is very powerful with Obeka. Untapping all your permanents including your lands, goes infinite with Aggravated Assault.
    It might not be very appearant if you just read the card text on Sands of Time, but if you read its oracle text you will see that it triggers on each of your upkeeps, not just at the start of your turn.
    I already run Sands of Time as a hate piece against Teferi's Protection, Stasis and Winter Orb. Its good that with Obeka it also becomes and engine and combo card.

    Gisa is definitely a mono black control commander. Between cards like Relic of Progenitus, Agatha's Soul Cauldron, Codex Shredder, etc, it's extremely easy to commit a crime on each player's turn, allowing Gisa to create 24 power worth of Menace Zombies every turn cycle. Toss in typical black card advantage and a LOT of targeted removal to commit crimes and you've got a very threatening deck.

    • @chriselliott5539
      @chriselliott5539 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Yes, the trade off is having to pay to steal the creatures (which get refunded) and it's less restrictive on not needing spiders. Vraska generally is a better ability, though you tend to build towards stealing stuff and thus your deck maybe lacking win cons. Shelob is guided towards spider tribal and you are building a synergistic board that can be used with a overrun effect to end the game reliably.

    • @danielsniff6405
      @danielsniff6405 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      You do have to pay mana for the ability, but other than that she seems better.

      Additional benefit to Shelob, she threatens commander damage wins pretty well.

    • @Droid6689
      @Droid6689 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, but not for the reasons you said exactly.
      They won't play the same. Shelob is a spider tribal commander. You need spiders and combat/damage to make her ability work. This means it is pretty difficult to steal things, especially the things you specifically want.
      Vraska just requires things to die while you have mana open, making it much more likely you'll steal what you want.
      Costing much less is a great tradeoff for not being a combat commander.
      Treasures v food is somewhat moot when each treasure costs a mana. It does give some incidental value if you have extra mana and something you don't want dies.

There are so many artifacts that double abilities and if you playing a 4 player commander you can spam a 1 drop target spell each of your opponents turns. Then you can have six 3/3s by your turn. Run that with all of her varients and a bunch of zombies and you'll be set. You can even add liliana to the mix to make opponents discard a card. Then you have black market to help with mana.

    Bristly Bill is a little more valuable to a +1/+1 counters deck than mentioned.
    1st, as was mentioned, he gets the initial counter-flow going early just as a result of your playing the game.
    Second, however, he replicates a two-drop Enchantment (Roaring Earth) that was already great for this, and as every +1/+1 counters player knows about their Hardened Scales effects, easy redundancy that shows its face in a game is nearly always gravy.
    A lesser consideration, but still notable particularly in Landfall utilizing Avenger of Zendikar is Bill himself being a Plant.
    That counter-doubling ability is crazy good even at 2G 3C. It’s priced cheaper than the cheapest Instant/Sorcery capable of doing the job, and commensurate with Enchantments and Equipment + Equip-cost that still have a hoop to jump through.
    I think Bristly Bill is a 99 card, too, don’t get me wrong, but he’s a *really good* addition to the 99 at the price of a Bear.
    That counter-doubler is so hot with any of the other doublers or an active Brawler.
    Bill and Railway Brawler are really all I want from OTJ, unless I can sneak away w/ one of the new Swords on the really cheap during pre-release. (The new Hydra’s nice, but not a singles-shopping target while the hype’s so hot, IMO.)

    Taii Wakeen can be straight opressive, if built right it's stacked with cheap removal or creatures that tap to deal damage since it's an until end of turn effect, it is very capable at holding any deck that want creatures out hostage since it's just as much instant or removal possible that will almost always net you card advantage from killing a creature draw a card, until you hit your kill from hand combo pieces by turning a bunch of tap deal 1 into deal 10. Also with stuff like Goblin Sharpshooter's it a one sided boardwipe everyturn forever unless removed.

    Been running Fortune as the commander in a blink deck, and it's actually insane. When you're threatening removal against anything that could block Fortune and kill it, people are wayyyyy more likely to just let the 2 damage through. Stealing stuff from your opponent's decks has one particular advantage over drawing your stuff - they're likely prepared in some way to deal with *your* stuff, but far less likely (particularly in the moment) to deal with their own stuff (Deal = remove, interact, mitigate, play around, etc).
    That extends further to synergies you manage to find between their cards and yours. And you get potentially way more options, card types/effects, and lines of play available to you without overloading your own deck.

    Here is why I would say Hazezon is better than Yuma. Hazezon is only RGW. You get payoffs right away when you start saccing your deserts. You get TWO tokens which triggers ETBs like the new Warleader's Call. Yuma is a payoff to Hazezon in the same way Titania is but has the added card draw. Yuma does not return deserts back to play, and I think this is the main reason Hazezon is better. Yuma requires quite a bit of setup to get working and to cost cheaper. All that setup triggers Hazezon. I could go on as there are a lot of nuances with the desert land base that makes Yuma a challenge. I am not saying Yuma is weak, but it will be slower than Hazezon and less resilient to removal. Yuma does have the possibility to snowball late game though.
    However, the commanders are not interchangeable. I have heard that from some people. Both decks will want some similar things like ways to sac lands (Zuran Orb is an all-star in both decks). Since Hazezon can get the deserts back you will want as many additional landdrops as you can get. Which also set up for landfall cards. Bounce lands are going to be more powerful in Hazezon. Field of the Dead is very good in Hazezon, especially since two of the deserts created zombies also. When I do search for lands I usually get the good desert that creates zombies, field of the dead, and then bounce lands in that order. Fetch lands are going to be more powerful in Yuma though they will not fetch the deserts. Yuma does not need the additional land drop cards as much. That deck will want all of the Crucible/Hazezon/Ramunap cards as possible. I could see Creeping Renaissance and Pair O Dice Lost being in Yuma.

Especially with a T1 that utilizes Faithless Looting to get CMC 1 / any two of 2-10 in the graveyard. Which is 6 mana off your commander turn 1. If you discarded super late game spells or some not as great spells in that moment then go into t2 with something like Magnum Opus and a lotus petal type effect you can drop Eris on turn 2 and from there you could start swinging

    Although I hate the lore that was essentially convoluted and hand-waived to put all these random legends in this set (and un-compleating Vraska and Jace for some reason???) I do like the flavour of Vraska killing a creature, petrifying it into a statue to then use as treasure XD

    Henzie ''Toolbox'' Torre: It's OK Rutstein we'll make an honest human of you yet.
    LOL I just built an all creature Henzie deck on a lark; seeing Honest Rutstein looks like they designed this card to perfectly fit in that deck:
    - Brings back a blitzed creature: check
    - Makes my creatures cost 1 less: check :P

    Tomer with the Bangers! That said disagree on Vraska, she’s super super powerful and horrible to play against so she’s a very strong commander! I get why you put her in Meh tho, I felt very meh playing against it! The command zone did a good vid highlighting some of the ways you can abuse her, it’s pretty gross :(

    I've been trying to make a Naya populate deck work since C19 with the original Ghired, but it felt like he didn't do enough. One extra token per turn, he has to attack to do it, and no haste. The new Ghired is everything I have been hoping for the last five years. He costs 2 less mana, he has haste, and his ability is easily repeatable. Don't get me wrong, I'm not interested in an easy infinite combo like Tomer described. I'm looking to resolve a big dumb idiot like Combustible Gearhulk or Terastodon, copy it with Orthion or Bramble Sovereign (or Feldon it out of my graveyard) and then make as many copies of it as I can. Also, Ertha Jo is amazing in the 99 because Ghired's ability targets creatures! Super excited for this set

    Hazezon is way faster than Yuma from my playtesting experience. Yuma is interesting because you can set it up nicely in a slower game and pop off big in the lategame. If you are running all the fetchlands it gets obviously way faster. But I don’t want to fetch like every turn. So then the problem is Yuma makes tokens for deserts going to the GY, but you already had to get quite a few ones in there to make him castable. Feels like losing a lot of value on the way. Then you might want to get all lands back with splendid reclamation stuff, so you can go big on mana and landfall. But Yuma won’t trigger off of that and you lose the costreduction for future casts. If you leave your lands in the GY too long your GY might eventually get removed and you are pretty much out of casting your commander ever again.
    Upside of Yuma is combo-potential if you‘re into that.
    Hazezon just works way smoother. You cast him on three and if you play your desert turn 4 and play the new ramp two deserts spell you got 7 creatures and 6 lands already. And that’s not even unlikely and doesn’t even consider any turn 1-2 plays or busted stuff like scapeshift. Turn 5 desert + Jetmir might be GG and that’s just 2 replaceable Spells plus lands and commander.
    So i‘ll finally build Hazezon on a 100$ budget now.
    Thanks a lot for the content. Its great to have this one video to get to know all the new commanders I might be facing in the near future :)

    The main reason I want Hazezon as my commander over Yuma is cause I’m building a naya aristocrats deck and I want those sweet 1/1s more plus the desert crucible is nice for all the land sac shenanigans

    Don't get me wrong, Yuma is decent as a commander, but he doesn't come close to Hazezon lol
    - Hazezon makes TWO tokens per desert etb, which pops off with any Impact Tremor/aristocrat effects
    - Hazezon tokens are 3 colors vs Yumas green ones, which is relevant for cards like Knight of New Alara
    - Hazezon can realistically come down turn 3 vs Yuma who would require 5 deserts in yard to do so
    - Hazezon lets you play deserts from yard innately, vs Yuma who requires crucible effect to do so
    The only realistic thing it offers over Hazezon is a very slow source of card draw, which I don't really think helps his case.

      One thing I learned from self discounting Commander (like Karador) Is that they are super reliable to Stick to the field (people won't often point removal at them) and in they case they die you can still pay them for cheap.

    • @tomerabramovici32
      @tomerabramovici32 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      You're missing that Yuma works much stronger with self-mill effects. Cards like Mesmeric Orb and Altar of Dementia allow Yuma to pop off in ways Hazezon can only dream of, you want all of those plus the normal Land staples like Life from the Loam to mill through your deck while making an enormous army, and this makes all the mass land recursion spells that much more powerful too. A turn 3 Hazezon really isn't impressive anyway.

    • @seanscott4543
      @seanscott4543 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @tomerabramovici32 Yes Yuma pops off with self mill effects, but that's no different than Hazezon popping off with anything that wants to go wide: craterhoof/moonshaker, cathars crusade, finale of devastation etc. all win you the game just as much as Yuma with dredge. They're both 'desert' decks but they are different strategies. Ultimately though, the Hazezon version is more powerful because it's a lot faster and not as easy to shut down as Yuma. What options beside removal do you have if I play dauthi voidwalker? Plus Hazezon has desertwalk so wins the mirror 😎

    The best way to deal with the Eriette player is when they cast their aura targeting your permanent, you remove Eriette, and now you stole their aura instead of them stealing your permanent.

  • @coryledwitch6492
    @coryledwitch6492 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I disagree on theft theory and reasons you gave in regards to synergy. Sure, you might get a random goblin, but that goblin is surely not a generic 1/1 or a token, AND it MUST have synergy , obviously. Even though it will probably not synergize with your deck, you are still denying them a synergy piece. What if it’s Muxus? Now you’re keeping up to 6 goblins off the board and now his etb has been spent. Win win. Theft is still really relevant against synergy decks with respect to disruption.

    Honestly, I very much disagree with your assessment of Breeches: He's an incredible artifact deck commander! Those decks already have a lot of cost reduction and other forms of ramp, alongside a bunch of artifacts you want to sacrifice anyway, which allows him to either do nonsense like copying cost reducers, copy things like Coveted Jewel, etc!! Pirates also have a lot of artifact support in general! A well built Breeches deck turns him into a kill on sight commander!!
