10:26 it is not actually weird for the tank to be shooting in the opposite direction it moves, in fact. During WW2, Britain made a tank called the Archer, this tank was a tank destroyer that would solve a problem that troubled British tanks. The transmission in British tanks were good, but the thing is, although they were good at the time and allowed the tanks to go fairly fast, they couldn’t go fast in reverse when retreating. And this is a big deal because if they wanted to retreat fast, they would have to turn the tank around in order to make the tank retreat faster by facing the tank away from the Germans. The thing is, this would make the crew and engine more vulnerable because the back of a tank is the weakest point. And if they didn’t turn around to retreat, the Germans could have just flanked or surrounded the British tanks either allowing the.British crew to surrender or destroying the tanks with the crew in them. And I’m not sure if this happened or not, but because the reverse on the transmissions was so slow, there could have been a time where some retreating British tanks actually was captured because they ran out of fuel(not because of the low supplies Britain had). This is where the archer comes into play. What Britain did was they got a common tank hull(either the valentine mark I or mark II hull, and they modified it a bit by reinforcing the back of the tank, thus making the front weaker, and they added a 6 pounder(I believe and yes, The British even called it a 6 pounder even though Britain was either already done or was transitioning to the metric system). The 6 pounder is a heavy gun, so they had to add weight to the front. And what they did to the gun was special, they flipped around thus the gun would face forewords. This tank was built with retreating in mind. So when this tank was put into battle, the tank would move forwards. And if the crew saw any infantry, they had a machine gun facing the opposite way of the 6 pounder. So when the tank crew spotted some Germans, they would turn the tank around, and start moving “forewords”/reversing towards the Germans and stop to fire. This was slow. But if the tank crew needed to retreat, the tank didn’t need to turn around, all the tank driver needed to do was put the tank in drive/gear and move forewords fast, this would still allow the tank to fire still and still offer protection to the crew
This guy: *enters all sorts of competitions and makes different things that are usually impossible to make in poly bridge* Me: *happy when my 1-1 bridge doesn't break*
The way that 4-bar linkages look while turning in this game reminds me of some renderings of 4dimensional hypercubes! when the linkages and shapes they're connecting are both squares and the length of the bars is the same as the square's sides, that 2d/3d illusion makes it look like it's a cube that's almost doing something like turning inside out repeatedly as 3d cross sections of the 4d shape slide through our plane of existence. Of course it's a 2d representation of that lol.
This tank is interesting. In the 1930’s people decided to place the engine in the front of tanks. This worked for cooling, but had to have a reduced crew( e.g no loader.) putting more strain on the commander to reload, fire, and aim the tank’s turret. I have no explanation for the gun. Maybe a front engine, anti-tank vehicle.
I feel like a cam and shaft engine would’ve easier to make (it’s basically what old steam powered trains used) unless of course you were going with a more authentic engine. Either way, good job on making a tank!
There’s a settings in the object physics menu or something that makes it so joints or whatever they are called the yellow dots well there’s a setting which makes the object collide with them so you can do a chain out of anything. Or are the dots called nodes.
5:38 linear could technically be correct here, if what you meant by linear is constant rotation speed (because the definition of linear is kinda a change which stays constant)
Too bad there isn't linked chain that created cogs could bite into - it seems like this might be a good addition for the game - cogs, pulleys, chains...
